But when is this misinformation actually believed, and when is it not?  Seeing is Disbelieving: Why People Believe Misinformation in War, and When They Know Better (Cambridge University Press, 2024) by Dr. Daniel Silverman examines the appeal and limits of dangerous misinformation in war, and is the go-to text for understanding false beliefs and their impact in modern armed conflict. Dr. Silverman extends the burgeoning study of factual misinformation, conspiracy theories, and fake news in social and political life into a crucial new domain, while providing a powerful new argument about the limits of misinformation in high-stakes situations. Rich evidence from the US drone campaign in Pakistan, the counterinsurgency against ISIL in Iraq, and the Syrian civil war provide the backdrop for practical lessons in promoting peace, fighting wars, managing conflict, and countering misinformation more effectively. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose new book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars.

See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

www.marktreichel.comhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/mark-treichel/ The NCUA Appeal Process: A Complete Guide # NCUA Appeal Process with Mark Treichel## OverviewThis episode covers the formal appeal process at NCUA, detailing how credit unions can appeal examination findings and supervisory determinations.## Key Points About Initial Response to Examination Findings- Start with the examiner level - resolving issues at the lowest level is most time and cost-efficient- Common reasons for appeals include:  - Factual errors not corrected  - CAMEL code downgrades  - Requirements that could negatively impact member service  - Requirements affecting capital building or earnings  - Requirements impacting liquidity control## What Can Be AppealedMaterial supervisory determinations that may significantly affect:- Capital- Earnings - Operating flexibility- Nature/level of supervisory oversightSpecifically includes:- Composite examination ratings of 3, 4, or 5- Loan loss reserve adequacy determinations- Classification of significant loans/assets- Federal consumer financial law compliance determinations- Certain waiver requests/additional authority applications## Appeal Process Timeline1. Initial Appeal to Regional Director   - Must file within 30 days of examination   - Regional Director has 30 days to respond2. Secondary Appeal Options (if Regional Director denies)   - 30 days to appeal to either:     - Office of Examination & Insurance, OR     - Supervisory Review Committee (recommended path)   - These bodies have 60 days to respond   - Can request oral hearing with Supervisory Review Committee3. Final Appeal to NCUA Board   - 30 days to file after previous denial   - Board has 90 days to decide   - May request oral hearing (not guaranteed)Total timeline can extend 8-12 months, especially if oral hearings are involved.## Important Considerations- Must follow each step sequentially - cannot skip levels- Component CAMEL ratings cannot be directly appealed, but arguments about components support composite rating appeals- Document resolutions are negotiable- Appeals create an administrative record- Partial victories possible at each level- Success likelihood typically increases at higher levels- "Tie goes to the runner" - burden of proof is on the credit union## ResourcesRelated regulations:- Part 746, Subpart A of NCUA regulations- Preamble to final rule provides important context## Contact InformationFor more information or consultation about appeals:- Connect with Mark Treichel on LinkedIn- Contact Credit Union Exam Solutions*Note: This episode expands on an earlier podcast about the regional appeal process featuring Todd Miller.*

Steven LaChance is my guest on this segment of "The Strange Reality Show with Dave Emmons," recorded on 11-14-24. Steven tells us about his early experiences at his haunted childhood home in Union, Missouri, which inspired him to write about horror stories with a factual basis. Steven tells us about a shadowy figure of a man that showed itself at all times of the day in his house where he was raising three children. Steven says the ghost or spirit followed him and his family to another home. In 2008, it motivated him to write about his experiences in his first book, "The Uninvited." Which is still a top-selling book about his family's paranormal experiences. Since this spirit would not leave their domain, he wrote a follow-up book "Blessed Are the Wicked (2010), continuing the haunting story. Steven went on to investigate many paranormal stories with teams of experts. That is when he wrote stories about other peoples' experiences in the book Crazy: A Prayer for the Dead (2012), a terrifying tale based on actual events. Steven took an interest in the St. Louis Exorcism case in 1949, researched, and wrote a book "Confrontation with Evil (2017). After that book, he rested from the paranormal until 2024. Steven's new book "Glow" explores the world of nightmares and chilling accounts of the supernatural. The book, "The Uninvited was selected as one of the best Books of 2008 by the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. He talks about people with PTSD from certain paranormal events. Steven has written the above books but has several sequels that he is working on as a full-time author. His career was in Radio Production and on-air work. He has had TV appearances and consulted various TV shows, including: "The Exorcism of Roland Doe." You can find his books on Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and all other outlets. If you want to live your life as your authentic self – not the person you want others to see – but as you, the real you, then we all know we have work to do and tools to find that can help with that. One of those tools is Human Design. Never heard of it? Yea, me neither, but I learned a lot this week from my in-studio guest, Brianne Cuttler of Be Aligned, an intuitive life and success coach and expert in Human Design. Before we sat down together, I sent her my date of birth (9/1/1981), my time of birth (7:21 pm) and place of birth (Philadelphia, PA) and she did a custom reading (I know – it sounds like astrology but it's not), providing info that helps me understand my soul's energy better so I can more effectively navigate all the energies around me (Brianne – did I get that right?). It's fascinating, it's fun and it's FACTUAL. So much of what she told me, just HIT. You can find out more (and contact her for your own private session) at her Instagram @Be.Aligned.BC and check out her latest offering with one of my favorite people in the world (and a past That Greenwich Life guest – episode 6 - go check her out), Julie Vincent of Clear Space For Joy. Together, starting Nov 7, they are launching The Joyful Alignment Mentorship, a supportive community for sacred discussions and self-discovery through Human Design, mindfulness, and embodied practices.
