It's been a minute since we saw this in theaters back in March. But we remember having a good time at this D&D fantasy comedy. Based on the popular and Satanic role-playing game from Hasbro. This game brand adaptation stars Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Rege-Jean Page, Justice Smith, Sophia Lillis, and Hugh Grant. Directed by the talented duo of Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley, who brought us Game Night (2018), Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017), and Horrible Bosses (2011). If you liked any of these, then you might like Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves!
Mark and Zanandi (@ZaNandi on X) talk about the 2017 horror film IT: Chapter One. Directed by Andy Muschietti, and starring Bill Skarsgård, Sophia Lillis, Jaeden Martell, Finn Wolfhard, the movie focuses on what happens when an evil alien lands on earth and starts acting like a complete jerk. In this episode, they also talk about rock throwing, creepy background characters, and overhead shots. We're rolling the final dice of this gambling game we call Aug-Heist, and it just so happens to have 20 sides! After the 2000 film doomed the franchise to the plane of Box Office Oblivion, the Gary Gygax-created tabletop fantasy roleplaying game enjoyed a resurrection thanks to retro references in shows like Stranger Things and web series like Critical Role. Now, the prophecy has been fulfilled and a big-budget version was unleashed in theaters in March of this year. Starring Chris Pine, Michelle Robdriguez, Justice Smith, and Sophia Lillis as a band of thieves who set off to steal from the con man who wronged them, the movie earned rave reviews but didn't exactly plunder the box office. Still, it rolled high enough to spawn a franchise. Now we're capping off Aug-Heist with Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves! Erik Childress and Steve Prokopy dig into eight new movies this week. They include revisiting a film from Sundance that they still believe to be the best horror film of the year (Birth/Rebirth). An Irish paramilitary seeks revenge for his wife (Dead Shot), an old Chinese tale gets the animated treatment from Netflix (The Monkey King) and Michael Cera stars in a dysfunctional family drama that the film's publicist apparently did not want us to see. One of the stars of Glow gets to go all Shining at the hotel she inherits (Bad Things) and the director of Thoroughbreds and Bad Education tries out a capitalist satire with aliens (Landscape With Invisible Hand). Finally, DC comics tries again (Blue Beetle) and talking dogs with the voices of Will Ferrell and Jamie Foxx pee, poop and hump their way into laughs (Strays). 0:00 - Intro 3:52 - Birth/Rebirth 17:36 - Dead Shot 25:06 - The Adults 35:36 – The Monkey King 41:26 - Bad Things 52:17 - Landscape With Invisible Hand 1:03:01 - Blue Beetle 1:18:14 – Strays 1:29:40 - Outro

Please Note: These interviews were recorded prior to the SAG/AFTRA strike, in June 2023, as part of the Tribeca Festival. On this special episode of Back To One, actors Sophia Lillis, Hannah Gross, and Michael Cera talk about their work in writer/director Dustin Guy Defa's wonderful new film "The Adults." We get a glimpse into each of their general preparation processes before doing a deep dive into their work on this actor-centric production. They each talk about how they built the reality of their complex sibling relationship, why the songs and dances that play such a big part in their characters' past feel so organic, the extremely hard task of being truly unfunny, and much more. The Adults opens in select U.S. cities on August 18th. Back To One is the in-depth, no-nonsense, actors-on-acting podcast from Filmmaker Magazine. In each episode, host Peter Rinaldi invites one working actor to do a deep dive into their unique process, psychology, and approach to the craft. Follow Back To One on Instagram

This week, we discuss DUNGEONS & DRAGONS: HONOR AMONG THIEVES (1:58), Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley's delightful and fun fantasy heist action-comedy based on the iconic role-playing game, starring Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Regé-Jean Page, Justice Smith, Sophia Lillis, and Hugh Grant. Then, we review Eva Longoria's FLAMIN' HOT (25:07), a biographical comedy-drama starring Jesse Garcia as Richard Montañez, who claimed to invent Flamin' Hot Cheetos. It's a trite film, but we appreciate the Mexican-American representation. And on this week's Patreon exclusive audio, we cover James Wan's 2013 supernatural horror film THE CONJURING!

This week on Fabulous Film and Friends I'm taking the time on our special 60th episode to come clean and admit I was wrong. Joining me as witnesses to my admission of guilt are series regulars David Johnson D.M.D. and erstwhile screenwriting collaborator, camera assistant, film editor lifelong gamer and creator of an unfinished and unknown role playing game entitled Swords and Adventure! Kendrick D. Wright. Okay, here's some context for this week's mea culpa. Nearly a year ago on the Fabulous Film & Friends Facebook Group I posted the trailer to Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves and I wrote: "Dungeon Masters! Behold! A wrongheaded Giant Turkey bomb with plus 4 box office poison approaching the battlements. " To which Kendrick replied, "I've been saying for 20 years that somebody needs to take a serious movie approach to D&D, and it could be a real satisfying blockbuster. With endless sequel opportunities. I don't think this movie is it. But I won't assume that it will obviously suck. I think there's a "chance" they can put a decent story together, but it's a long shot for sure... What they need is to slow it down like a Western, have one third the action, one third the spectacle, real character development with real motivations, and take the material mostly seriously the way Star Wars did. Midway between this jokey approach and Game Of Thrones. Would be epic..." And then I replied, "All anyone had to do for the right tone is watch Fire and Ice. For some reason the producers handling D&D keep thinking it's a comedy." So first off, Not only was my prediction about the box office incorrect, I was dead wrong about the quality and tone of the film. 2023's Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves starring Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Regé-Jean Page, Justice Smith, Sophia Lillis and Hugh Grant looked to me to be a jokey, CGI laden misfire with a cast of under-achieving diversity hires adding an ironic, postmodern sensibility to a genre that should be literal, serious and heavy on swearing and spittle. Well, the film is all that I thought it would be with one notable exception: It's not a misfire. The film works. The cast is funny and engaging and everything that looked lazy and tiresome in the trailer seemed charming and witty when played out in real time. Meanwhile, just for a comparison, we watched Fire and Ice, I think it was for the first time for Ken and Dave, and probably the 7th or 8th time for yours truly. And while Ralph Bakshi's and Frank Frazetta's 1983 animated Fire and Ice still holds up for me as a visual spectacle, this time around I did find myself questioning my love of a film with an overly simplistic and underwritten screenplay. But before we dig in: the synopses. Fire and Ice tells the story of Larn, a warrior of the lava people of Firekeep who teams up with a lone wolf warrior named Darkwolf to rescue Firekeep's gorgeous and always nearly naked Princess Teegra who has been kidnapped by the evil Ice Lord Nekron and his sinister mother Juliana. Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves is actually the 4th D&D movie to be produced --there's a trilogy consisting of one theatrical release and two straight to video releases from the early 2000's that no one ever saw. But this film follows a pair of disgraced Warriors turned thieves Edgin and Holga who along with a ne'er do well wizard and an outcast shapesfhifter go on a quest to find magical items in order to save Edgin's daughter from Forge, a con man and former teammate who betrayed Edgin and Holga at the behest of the evil sorceress Sofina.

Director John Francis Daley, known for the spectacular film GAME NIGHT (2018), joins up with co-director Jonathan Goldstein to direct the new fantasy film, DUNGEONS AND DRAGONS: HONOR AMONG THIEVES (2023). The movie is based on the book and game franchise, DUNGEONS AND DRAGONS. It's a reboot of an old film series that didn't live up to expectations. The bard, Edgin Darvis (Chris Pine), and his barbarian friend, Holga Kilgore (Michelle Rodriguez), head out to find the Tablet of Reawakening, which will allow Edgin to bring his wife back from the dead. With the help of a tiefling druid, a wizard, and a paladin, their adventure leads them to the caverns with dragons, and fighting a group of undead wizards. The movie has received fantastic reviews both from critics and audiences alike. The cast also includes Hugh Grant, Justice Smith, Rege-Jean Page, Daisy Head, and Sophia Lillis. There is already talk of a sequel and a televisions series, with some critics calling it similar to the Marvel films. Your co-hosts take a look at the movie and give their thoughts.

Rico and Jess discuss the D&D adaptation, talking through how approachable the plot and characters were (since they have no prior experience playing the game), Chris Pine and his endless charisma, how silly and great Hugh Grant is, the resistance to the overabundance of CGI, the cameo that might have been the best part of the movie, and more in spoilers. This week on Press Any Key Episode #108, we get out our character sheets and our d20's to review the latest @paramountpictures release Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. A quick 2-hour romp with a cast of misfits continually failing and going on fetch quests so they can rob their old friend. Sounds like most DnD games I've played, but with fewer murder hobos. We'd love to talk about how Liz is enjoying The Last of Us launch on PC, but she's averaging 16 crashes an hour. Amassing over 9k horribly negative steam reviews, the game was horrifically ported over to the PC and is really pissing the bed on cashing in with the show's popularity. Pat's excited anytime we get to talk about Batman, and there's speculative Batman news! Filmmaker Mike Flanagan (Doctor Sleep) pitched a feature version of potentially The Batman 2 with Clayface as a main villain. Will they make him the golden age actor-murder, or will he be a big ol' mud man? Ike Perlmutter, Disney + Marvel's racist/misogynistic/homophobic Ebenezer Scrooge, got fired! This man has been at the helm of Marvel and has actively been blocking creatives like Kevin Feige for the better part of 2 decades. Maybe this is what it takes to pull Marvel back up so we avoid any more Ant-Man failures. Speaking of canceled, E3 is officially dead for this year (and possibly the future). Most game companies and developers are opting for their own showcases since they're substantially cheaper and easier to put on. But we think this really kills the magic. Of course, they're going to opt for bottom-line profit, but we're never gonna get weird pictures of celebrities awkwardly playing Gamecube. We've got 10 minutes of gameplay for Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (or Breath of the Wild 2 whatever you wanna call it we don't care). Basically, Link's got a bunch of duct tape and a nail gun so he can stick virtually anything together to make random weapons, cars, flying machines, weapons of mass destruction, you name it. Needless to say, we're still psyched for this. Honor Among Thieves stars Chris Pine as a failure of a bard, Michelle Rodriguez kicking into her barbarian rage, Sophia Lillis playing a fly/rat/deer/owlbear, and Justice Smith getting typecast into his standard kid that gets bullied roll. And, for what it's worth, this is the best version of the movie that it could have been. There are plenty of cool practical effects, actual solid writing and purpose for the plot, and decent acting. It just won't be a movie you think about after you leave the theatre, unfortunately. #dungeonsanddragons #honoramongthieves #batman #clayface #e3 #movies #rpg #dc #tabletop #dnd #pressanykey #podcast #live Discord: https://discord.gg/XxbM3jDX Instagram: http://instagram.com/pressanykey.tv Twitter: https://twitter.com/pressanykeytv TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@pressanykey.tv Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/0RVAOM96JKNZAWunDbqY0a?si=51b6f25dcd1b4f1d Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/press-any-key/id1531803331

Welcome to the party. This week on Cinemaholics, we review Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, a new film adaptation of the classic tabletop game. Directed by Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley (Game Night), Dungeons & Dragons blends medieval fantasy action with high-concept comedy, and with a game cast, no less. Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Regé-Jean Page, Justice Smith, Sophia Lillis, and Hugh Grant are all here rolling the dice on this being the next big blockbuster franchise. But we're a bit divided on this one being a quest worth taking. It's a Cinemaholics battle for the ages. Links: Follow us on Twitter: Jon Negroni, Will Ashton Check out our Cinemaholics Merch! OK, we're not going to lie. This week's episode of the (freshly award-nominated) Empire Podcast is even more bumper-sized than usual, folks. But that's what happens when the legendary action star, Scott Adkins, strolls into the podbooth and joins Chris Hewitt, Helen O'Hara and James Dyer for the first third of the show, talking about his time as Killa Harkan in John Wick: Chapter 4. Scott also sticks around for the listener question section, which is nice. Oh, and there's a big John Wick Chapter 4 spoiler from 08:06.000 to 09:25.438. Elsewhere, Chris has three incredibly fun chats with what seems like the entire cast of Dungeons & Dragons: Honour Among Thieves — Chris Pine and Hugh Grant talk about what they look for in a director, Michelle Rodriguez and Regé-Jean Page wax lyrical about Northern Ireland and seals, and Justice Smith and Sophia Lillis help Chris rediscover his love of the podcast form. It'll all make sense once you hear them. And then, either side of that, it's a fun episode as Chris, Helen and James trawl through the movie news, take a tangent or ten, and review Dungeons & Dragons, Tetris, Murder Mystery 2 and more. Oh, and Chris whips out his Adam Sandler Top 10. The results may shock you. Enjoy!

This week, Film Comment is reporting from Berlin, where the 2023 Berlinale is currently underway. Throughout the festival, we'll be sharing daily podcasts, dispatches, and interviews covering all the highlights of this year's selection, including new films by Christian Petzold, Angela Schanelec, Hong Sangsoo, James Benning, and many more. On today's episode, FC co-deputy editor Clinton Krute sat down with writer/director Dustin Guy Defa and actor Michael Cera to discuss The Adults, which just had its world premiere at this year's Berlinale. The film tells the story of Eric, a youngish man returning for a quick visit to the upstate New York town where he grew up. As he struggles to reconnect with his two sisters, played by Hannah Gross and Sophia Lillis, his obsession with poker, and his drive to beat every player in town, keeps prolonging his stay. The nuanced performances of the three leads, along with Guy Defa's precise dialogue, pull the film off center, destabilizing what might otherwise have been a fairly familiar drama of family reconciliation. Instead, The Adults is something far stranger and resonant.
