Olympic-Level Leadership Lessons with Matt Carroll

Thriving Leaders Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 7, 2025 46:07

What does it take to lead an Olympic-level team? Not on the field—but behind the scenes? In this episode, I'm joined by Matt Carroll AM, one of Australia's most accomplished sports administrators. As the former CEO of the Australian Olympic Committee from 2017 to 2025, Matt led teams through some of the most complex Olympic cycles in history—including the Tokyo Games during the pandemic, the Paris Games, and the early planning for Brisbane 2032. Matt's leadership legacy goes well beyond sport. Matt's career spans more than 30 years, across rugby, football, and sailing—including pivotal roles with Rugby World Cup 2003, the A-League, and Japan Rugby. He was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia in 2004 for his service to sport. Together, we unpack what it takes to build thriving teams in high-pressure, high-stakes environments—and how purpose, trust, and clarity shape performance at every level. In this episode, we cover: – What Olympic-level leadership looks like off the field – How to build alignment between home and away teams – Why strategic planning in “quads” (four-year cycles) keeps teams focused and accountable – How trust and mutual respect underpin high performance—even when no one's watching – What Matt learned from managing the Tokyo Games during a global pandemic – The power of stakeholder alignment across government, sponsors, sports, and community – Why every role matters—no matter how visible—and how to build a “one team” mindset One of my favourite takeaways? Matt's story about the “home and away” teams during the Tokyo Games reminded me that contribution isn't measured by visibility—it's measured by alignment to purpose. When everyone understands what we're doing, why it matters, and how we'll get there, we unlock extraordinary performance—together. If this conversation sparked ideas for how you can lead with more purpose, clarity and connection—we'd love to hear your reflections. Thanks for joining The Thriving Leaders Podcast. Keep on thriving.

It makes sense that Simone Biles, winner of 11 Olympic medals, and considered by many to be the greatest gymnast of all time, would stick to a consistent pre-competition ritual to prepare for battle. But, as filmmaker Katie Walsh shows in one of the more intimate scenes in her exceptional four-part Netflix docuseries, “Simone Biles Rising,” the big surprise comes when we see that the hair braiding skills of Simone's mom Nellie might be the most important part of this ritual. This simple act of touch prior to each day's competition says it all about the close bond between mother and daughter and the person Simone turns to in the most difficult moments.   Katie joins Ken on “Top Docs” to talk about this special relationship between Simone and Nellie and what it was like to document the highs and lows of Simone's remarkable career. The series begins with Simone's shocking case of the “twisties” at the 2021 Tokyo Games that caused her to withdraw from the sport she'd come to dominate. Over the course of the series, Katie captures all the key moments as Simone, with the support of her family and close network of friends, finds her way back to gold medal glory. But, just as important, as a powerful advocate for mental health, Simone challenges society's expectations of its most celebrated athletes — and once again rises above.   “Simone Biles Rising” is streaming on Netflix.   Hidden Gem: “Daughters”   Follow: @projectlifemedia on Instagram @topdocspod on Instagram and X    The Presenting Sponsor of "Top Docs" is Netflix.

In this episode of the Supporting Champions Podcast, I'm joined by Lisa Trainor – a former varsity athlete turned researcher – to explore the evolving landscape of athlete well-being. Drawing from her own experiences and her academic work, Lisa discusses how injury and major disruptions like the postponement of the Tokyo Games can influence an athlete's psychological state. She offers insight into the distinction between hedonic (feeling good) and eudaemonic (functioning well and finding purpose) well-being, and how each contributes to sustainable elite performance. We unpack key themes including the importance of psychological safety, the value of self-confidence and identity in sport, and how athletes can remain fulfilled even when faced with setbacks. Lisa provides a compelling case for redefining success beyond medals and rankings – encouraging us to view thriving and performance not as opposites, but as intertwined outcomes of a well-supported sporting experience.

A veteran of over a decade on the U.S. Biathlon Team, Kelsey Dickinson is still packing her skis and biathlon rifle to the far reaches of the world. Along the way, her legacy is growing as a passionate advocate for her fellow athletes, and a pioneering leader for women in sport. Heartbeat co-hosts Tom Kellly and Sara Donatello spoke with Dickinson during a post-season spring break from her home in Bozeman, Mont., where she spends time while not training in Craftsbury, Vt.When Heartbeat last caught up with Dickinson in December, 2021, she talked about growing up in Washington's Methow Valley as a cross country skier, later finding her passion for biathlon at St. Scholastica College in Duluth, Minn. She also spoke about the role women coaches had made in her career – foreshadowing what she's been up to these last few seasons.Dickinson has taken her passion for the sport and become one of its most prominent advocates for change. She serves on the U.S. Biathlon board as an athlete representative and also represents her sport on the USOPC Athletes' Advisory Council. She's a gender equity athlete ambassador for the IBU, and served on the USOPC's DEI Core Team leading up to the 2021 Tokyo Games. She has played a vital role with the USOPC Women's Health Task Force, focusing on health-related issues affecting female athletes. She even served on a Team USA athlete advisory group that examined emerging digital assets, such as non-fungible tokens (NFTs).But amidst all of her giving back to her sport, one of the roles she cherishes most is serving as executive director of the Women Ski Coaches Association, the organization started by her college coach at St. Scholastica, Maria Stuber. What started as an initiative within NCAA programs, is now having an impact on a wide range of sports through programs like GearUp and Trail to Gold. Why does Dickinson devote so much time and energy with such passion? “Early on, I realized that for me to find meaning in sport, I really wanted to make it a place where my teammates or anyone, who wanted to be coaches could have the best experience possible.”Dickinson has seen the challenges through the eyes of some amazing female mentors, like Stuber, who have influenced her career.“I've had some experiences when I was younger that made me realize that, wow, like, sport doesn't necessarily put women and men on an equal level,” she said. “And it's not necessarily that anyone is trying to discriminate against women, but it just sort of exists in the fabric of the culture.”Dickinson has found a welcoming reception from U.S. Biathlon to the IBU to USOPC. “U.S. Biathlon understands that it to be to be a modern innovative sports organization, bringing in women voices and increasing diversity and is only going to benefit the success of the sport,” she said. “The bottom line – I think what U.S. Biathlon is doing is really important and essential for long term success.”Beyond equality initiatives, she sees her work benefiting other areas, including overall team culture and creating more coaches in the biathlon community, who can then grow their own junior programs.“I'm really glad that they're investing in this and taking the time to put their put their weight behind this program succeeding.”Reflecting back on her career as an athlete and an advocate, Dickinson speaks with confidence and satisfaction – as someone who can now see that the work she's been doing has been fruitful.“I've always felt this purpose that – my impact on sport. I would rather be remembered for making sport a better place for women than necessarily my results. That's always been driving me in this space.”Sport is fortunate to have an advocate like biathlete Kelsey Dickinson, who is a pioneer for change and not afraid to dive in and do the work. Through her eyes and experiences, this episode of Heartbeat showcases the impact athletes can have on their sports. Listen in as Kelsey Dickinson walks us through the myriad ways she's having a profound impact on sport.RESOURCESExplore these links to learn more and to get engaged in programs.Women Ski Coaches AssociationU.S. Biathlon Women's Coaching InitiativeNNF Trail to Gold Grant Program

Flame Bearers - The Women Athletes Carrying Tokyo's Torch

“I would tell my younger self: don't let people tell you your worth…you're the only one in your body—you know best.” Angélina Lanza is a 2x European champion, World Championship medalist, and 3x Paralympic finalist in track and field for France. In today's conversation, Angélina talks about the highs and lows of her athletic career, including ongoing injuries, losing her mother just before the Tokyo Games, and the everyday challenges of being a woman in para sport. “I had an injury nearly every year. Every time I had to ask, ‘What's the lesson this time?'” She shares how sport helped her navigate personal grief: “I put all my energy—and my anger and sadness—into training. I didn't have another choice.” Angélina also speaks honestly about gender inequities in sport, especially around appearance, pay, and visibility. “When you're at the start line, you shouldn't be worried about your outfit or what people might see on camera.” She also critiques unequal treatment in prize money and gear: “Men would get prize money; women would get cute gifts.” We also discuss the confidence she gained through para athletics: “I used to hate my body. I didn't understand why I had muscles. Now I see my body as the tool that helps me perform.” Her message to listeners? “Think about your goals. What's stopping you? Just start.” Photo provided by Angélina -------- Flame Bearers is a multi media movement, illuminating the unsung stories of elite women athletes from around the world. It's a tremendous honor for me to share my podcast with Olympic legend and humanitarian, Billy Mills.  Billy Mills was born in 1938 and grew up on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota, home to the Oglala Lakota Nation. Billy had a very difficult childhood, losing his mother, sister, and father by the age of 12. He turned to running as both an escape and a source of discipline. After his father's passing, Billy attended the Haskell Institute, a U.S. government run boarding school for Native American children. Schools like Haskell were controversial for their forced assimilation, physical and emotional abuse, and systematically trying to erase their students Indigenous identities. Billy, though, had a positive experience at Haskell, where he met his coach Tony Coffin, who became somewhat of a father figure to him. Coffin recognized Billy's talent and helped nurture his running abilities, providing him with the foundation that would later lead to his collegiate and Olympic success. Also, during his time at Haskell, Billy spent one of his summers as a counselor at Camp Greylock in Beckett, Massachusetts, which is the summer camp that I went to many years later and is a very important part of my life. So it's very special for me to share this link with Billy. At Haskell, Billy won multiple state championships in track and cross country, earning him a scholarship to the University of Kansas, where Billy would be coached by Bill Easton. Easton was a highly respected track and field coach who led Kansas to multiple NCAA championships, and at Kansas, Billy was one of the best distance runners in the country. He was a three time All American, won multiple Big Eight titles, and was runner up in the 1960 cross country championships. Through all of this, however, Billy faced numerous challenges, including discrimination at every level, including from Easton, hypoglycemia, and struggles with self doubt. At times, Billy even contemplated suicide, and in his senior year, he walked off the track and quit the team completely. Fortunately for Billy, the University of Kansas is also where he met and began dating a young woman named Patricia Pat Collins. Pat played a crucial role in Billy's journey, supporting him through the challenges he faced as an athlete and as a Native American navigating the world of elite sports. After graduating Kansas, Billy married Pat, joined the U. S. Marine Corps, and resumed training with the goal of not just making the U. S. Olympic team and not just winning a medal, but winning the gold medal in the 10K. Which he did. In 1964, Billy qualified for the Tokyo Olympics in the 10, 000 meter race, where he stunned the world with a historic, come from behind victory, becoming the first and still the only American, or even the only person from the Western Hemisphere, to win the gold medal in the event. He also remains the only Native American, other than Jim Thorpe, to win a gold medal in the Olympics. His triumph is considered one of the greatest Olympic upsets and victories of all time. Since Billy's victory in the 1964 Tokyo Games, Billy and Pat have dedicated their lives to giving back, co founding Running Strong for American Indian Youth, an organization that empowers Indigenous communities through health, education, and self sufficiency programs. Their journey is one of perseverance, cultural pride, and spreading a message of unity through diversity. All values that are very much at the heart of the Charity Miles community. Which naturally, is why we want to also thank our partners at Brooks Running who are very much champions for these values as well. For over a century, Brooks has been propelled by a never-ending curiosity with how humans move. It drives their every decision and every innovation. Because they believe movement is the key to feeling more alive. And we're all moving towards something. It could be the top of a mountain, a first-ever 5K,  peace of mind after a stressful day, or an Olympic gold medal.  It could be a cure for Parkinson's, a cleaner planet, fair play, or the strength that comes from our diversity. So… let's run there. With gear and experiences specifically designed to take you to that place. Whether it's a headspace, a feeling, or a finish line. Let's run there. Send Carolyn a textLeanne Klassen is back on the show, along with her coach, the legendary Malindi Elmore, to break down Leanne's outstanding marathon performance last month in Houston.Malindi is a three-time Olympian and a true icon of Canadian distance running. A Stanford graduate, she first competed in the 1500 meters at the 2004 Athens Olympics, and then made a remarkable transition to the marathon—placing 9th at the 2021 Tokyo Games and representing Canada again in Paris last summer, a full 20 years after her Olympic debut! At nearly 45 years of age and living in Kelowna, BC, with her husband, Graham, and their two young boys, Malindi continues to train and compete at the highest level while coaching athletes and winning national titles.Leanne was first on the show in the fall of 2023, where we talked about navigating injuries with grace. As a sub-elite distance runner, she's faced her fair share of setbacks, which led her and Malindi to take a fresh approach to her Houston Marathon buildup. Instead of prioritizing high mileage and grueling long runs, they focused on a less-is-more strategy—emphasizing smart training, recovery, and strength work. The results were nothing short of incredible. Leanne not only felt stronger than ever in training, but she also took a massive two minutes off her personal best, running 2:40:52 in tough weather conditions. As endurance athletes, we often fall into the trap of thinking more is always better—but what if real breakthroughs happen by training smarter, not harder? Whether you're a recreational runner or competing at an elite level, this is the kind of story that deserves more attention.Connect with Leanne:Inspired Soles Interview: Navigating Injuries With GraceInstagram: @leanneklassen7Connect with Malindi:Website: malindielmore.comInstagram: @malindielmoreConnect with Carolyn:Instagram: @inspiredsolescast or @carolyn.c.coffinYou can help spread the running love!
