“We all float down here.” Join Ian & Kev, along with BFF of the BFE: James DeGuzman, for our 302nd episode as we descend into the sewers of Derry, Maine, and confront childhood trauma, red balloons, and Stephen King nightmare fuel with It: Chapter One (2017). Megs and Liam? They said they weren't afraid of clowns… right up until Pennywise offered them a balloon. We're hoping they resurface soon. This week we discuss: Why It tapped into a new generation's fear of clowns — and whether it's earned or just clever filmmaking. Bill Skarsgård's terrifying turn as Pennywise — physicality, psychology, and drool. How the film balances coming-of-age warmth with soul-shaking horror — friendship vs. fear. King's original novel vs. the adaptation — what gets streamlined, what gets lost, and what gets under your skin. Does this film prove that horror is strongest when it's tied to universal childhood anxieties? How the film is able to position that early coming-of-age feelings of romance without coming across as creepy The Losers' Club: perfect casting? We break down who stands out and who feels underserved. Why the sewer sequences and the house on Neibolt Street raise the bar for modern horror set pieces. Ian talks about narrative structure and why splitting the story into “kid chapter” and “adult chapter” was the smartest possible move. James brings the expert scare analysis — and takes the BFE to task over their anti-horror bias Does Pennywise's final reveal hold up — or does CGI drain the fear away? And finally, whether It: Chapter One is the Best Film Ever — or just the best nightmare you'll keep watching anyway. Roxy Striar, Tara Erickson & Andrew Gordon react to Episode 1 of IT: Welcome to Derry — the chilling new prequel series from Andy Muschietti & Barbara Muschietti (who brought us the films IT (2017) and IT: Chapter Two). Set in 1962 in the eerily haunted town of Derry, Maine, this first episode plunges us straight into the dark origins of the evil entity known as Pennywise and the terrifying undercurrents of a seemingly quiet town. The cast features Bill Skarsgård (reprising his role as Pennywise – Barbarian, Hemlock Grove) alongside Taylour Paige as Charlotte Hanlon (The Toxic Avenger), Jovan Adepo as Leroy Hanlon (Babylon), and Chris Chalk as Dick Hallorann (Perry Mason, Gotham)—all battling the rising terror that first gripped Derry. Stand-out, highly searched moments in this premiere include the opening bloodbath sequence that sets the tone for the season, the first eerie encounter with children hearing voices in the pipes, and the brief but bone-chilling glimpse of Pennywise emerging from darkness. With its mix of vintage 1960s Americana, supernatural dread, and Stephen King mythos, this premiere sets the stage for a horror saga that goes beyond jump scares — it digs into generational trauma, town secrets, and the evil that lingers just beneath the surface. If you've ever wondered why It (2017/2019) still crawls under our skin, this episode is your sewer-level deep dive. We revisit Chapters 1 & 2 and talk about how Stephen King's coming-of-age terror works on two timelines—childhood and adulthood—to explore memory, guilt, friendship, and the way a town learns to look away. We break down:Pennywise as a mirror for human cruelty—and why Bill Skarsgård's performance vaulted into horror's pantheon.Beverly's story of survival; Richie & Eddie's dynamic; Mike's under-sung backbone; and Henry Bowers' terrifying escalation. The casting magic: kids and adult counterparts who feel like the same people decades apart. The scenes that still devastate (hello, funhouse mirrors and “you'll float too”).Why It is one of the most effective King adaptations—and how It: Welcome to Derry extends the mythos. With horror thriving at the box office and prestige circles, this rewatch lands right as It: Welcome to Derry (a 1962-set prequel on HBO/Max) premieres, promising more of Pennywise's origins. We connect those dots and share what modern horror trends say about It's staying power. We chat about why the various adaptations land so differently, what makes Pennywise terrifying (Tim Curry vs. Bill Skarsgård), and how the story's big ideas — childhood trauma, memory, and fear — get handled across formats. We also get candid about the parts that don't sit right: problematic elements in the book, how King's worldview shows up in his writing, and why some of his choices (yep, we mean that one scene) feel unnecessary and disturbing. It's a frank, cozy, and sometimes messy convo — the kind you'd have with your snarkiest, warmest friends over a glass (or three). If you love horror history, behind-the-scenes casting tea, and judge-y takes on iconic scenes, this episode is for you. And if you're terrified of clowns or storm drains... we hear you. We'll hold the light while you walk by the gutter.
Last year, director Robert Eggers, who burst onto the horror filmmaking scene with The Witch and The Lighthouse, premiered his remake of the classic 1922 silent German Expressionist vampire film. Starring Lily-Rose Depp, Nicholas Hoult, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Emma Corrin, Ralph Ineson, and Willem Dafoe, the film sees Bill Skarsgård step into the iconic Max Schreck role of Count Orlock. This is adaptation of Bram Stoker's Dracula bewitched audiences, becoming Egger's highest-grossing film to date, and earned four Academy Awards nominations for Best Cinematography, Best Costume Design, Best Production Design, and Best Makeup and Hairstyling. But as we kick off our month of spooky movies, are our hosts seduced by this symphony of horror. Or, like a bad cover version, is Eggers' take ultimately toothless? Zach Cregger films. Sarah Watt, Jeremy Downing and William Chen discuss Weapons (2025) and Barbarian (2022). Our conversation begins with our experiences watching Barbarian for the first time and it quickly weaves into our reactions to watching Zach Cregger's latest film Barbarian. We make connections between the films and with Heretic (2024), Longlegs (2024), The Shining (1980), Carnivàle (2003-2005), Magnolia (1999), Prisoners (2013), and No Country For Old Men (2007). We praise the work of Georgina Campbell, Bill Skarsgård and Justin Long in Barbarian, and Julia Garner, Josh Brolin, Benadict Wong, Alden Ehrenreich, Toby Huss and Amy Madigan in Weapons.

The Cinematography Podcast Episode 318: Michael Dallatorre In the film Locked, cinematographer Michael Dallatorre faced a unique challenge: how to make a story primarily set inside a luxury SUV visually compelling. The plot follows small-time criminal Eddie (Bill Skarsgård) as he breaks into a high-tech vehicle, only to find himself trapped in an elaborate psychological game orchestrated by the car's vengeful owner, William (Anthony Hopkins). Mike collaborated closely with director David Yarovesky, aiming for intentional camera work that would immerse the audience inside the enclosed space without resorting to distorted wide-angle lenses. Together with Dan Sasaki at Panavision, they developed a custom anamorphic lens that could focus within 14 inches of the subject, as well as specialized probe and periscope lenses. These tools were crucial for capturing intimate shots within the car's tight interior. One of the movie's most memorable sequences is a 360-degree spinning shot around the car as Eddie is first locked inside. To execute this complex shot, Mike worked with production designer Grant Armstrong, who engineered a vehicle with flyaway side panels that could slide off on tracks as the camera circled. Before filming, the team rehearsed with Bill Skarsgård in a rental SUV to nail down the character's movements. For the camera choreography, Mike created a model in Unreal Engine, a 3D creation tool, to build a previs of the sequence. This allowed him to demonstrate their plans to Yarovesky and the producers. After perfecting the camera rigging and movements, they dedicated an entire day to choreographing and shooting the scene. "It's definitely one of my proudest shots," Mike says. "From inception to full execution and everything, it's just so cool to be able to do something like that, and then it happens." While much of Locked was shot on a set, not all effects relied on green screens. On-location scenes were incorporated when essential to the script, and driving shots were achieved using a process trailer. During pre-production, Mike and Yarovesky carefully determined the importance of physical locations for each scene. If a real-world setting wasn't crucial to the narrative, Yarovesky opted for the soundstage, a decision often driven by the film's independent budget. "We shot about five days at a parking lot," Mike explains. "We shot pieces of scenes, and I had my light meter and I measured. Scene 45, the sun's at this position. Here's the temp. Here's the intensity from the fill side. Here's the intensity from the negative side. And then I could recreate that on set." To make the set feel less like a constant green screen environment, they embraced older filmmaking techniques. Production designer Armstrong created realistic printed backdrops, both cycloramas and translights, which were placed outside the car windows. The integration into the set ensured that the green screen shots appeared seamless and natural. If you're interested in exploring Unreal Engine, Mike suggests trying a plugin for Unreal by Matt Workman called Cine Designer. https://www.fab.com/listings/99ec8ecc-a128-4dc1-8df0-9e0710c36e86 Locked is available to purchase on VOD. We also catch up with "Locked," which came out last weekend. Bill Skarsgård finds himself trapped in a fancy SUV when he picks the wrong car to steal from a Vancouver parking lot. Anthony Hopkins is the voice of the car owner who torments him remotely. Also in theaters. And we finally did Movie News LIVE! for the first time in about three weeks. Things have been a little crazy around here. Among the topics we talked about were "No Other Land" director Hamdan Ballal, Sundance leaving Park City, Rachel Zegler, "Avengers: Doomsday" and more. We won't be back for another livestream until April 18 because of spring break, but we look forward to seeing you then, and we're so happy you're here now. Robert Eggers' Nosferatu (2024) is a masterclass in how to remake a classic while breathing new life—and death—into it. With stunning gothic visuals, eerie atmosphere, and haunting performances, Eggers reimagines F.W. Murnau's 1922 silent film for a modern audience without sacrificing its unsettling soul. Every frame drips with dread, paying homage to the original while using contemporary filmmaking to deepen the psychological terror. Bill Skarsgård's portrayal of Count Orlok is both monstrous and mesmerizing, a performance that anchors the film in pure nightmare fuel. The movie doesn't just retell the story—it resurrects it with chilling reverence and creative vision.Robert Eggers has already proven himself with The Witch and The Lighthouse, but Nosferatu cements his place as the future of horror cinema. His commitment to atmosphere, historical detail, and character-driven dread is redefining what horror can be—less about jump scares and more about psychological immersion. Eggers' films don't just scare you; they haunt you. In an era of formulaic horror, his work stands out as deeply cinematic and disturbingly poetic. Nosferatu is not just a great remake—it's a declaration that horror is still an art form, and Eggers is its new maestro.Stick around until the end for a round of Movie 20 Questions.Safe travels, nomaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaads.

Synopsis Tell me, does evil come from within us, or beyond? This film follows Ellen (played by Lily-Rose Depp), and her husband, Thomas (played by Nicholas Hoult) as Thomas takes a new job that requires him to go to a strange land to broker a real estate deal with the mysterious Count Orlok. While Ellen begs him not to go, he does anyways, and she starts having nightmares and fits of madness while he's away. Thomas quickly realizes he's in for a lot more than a house sale once he arrives at the Count's castle, and Ellen, Thomas, and a gang of professors and doctors have to work together to defeat the darkness. Review Excellent is not a good enough word to describe this movie. It is exceptional, phenomenal, show-stopping, incredible, stupendous. This is truly a spectacle to see in the theater. The costuming is gorgeous and intricate. Every single actor brought their A-game. The atmosphere and set dressing completely immerse you into the world of 1838 Germany and the mysteries of the vampire. The physical acting from Lily-Rose Depp was completely unexpected yet welcomed and hopefully revered by all, you truly are watching a master work her craft. Nicholas Hoult was incredibly convincing as Thomas and incredibly hot, per usual. Willem Dafoe and Ralph Ineson occasionally add a solid comic relief while also driving the plot forward. Also, it is so entertaining and the pacing is perfect so the 132 minute run time passes you by like a soft summer breeze. I don't even know how to review this film to accurately describe how awe-struck I was while watching it. I wanted to stand up in the theater like I was watching the Superbowl. This was my Superbowl. My one complaint is that I wish they hadn't told us who played Count Orlok because Bill Skarsgård is completely unrecognizable as the illustrious vampire. This is Count Orlok like we've never seen, as in the original it was a silent film so it was impossible to hear his voice, and in the Herzog version he is portrayed as more of a melancholy creature battling with isolation and immortality. In this film, he is terrifying, he is demanding, he is alluring and intoxicating, he is sexy and fearsome and seemingly rules the world. The viewer falls under his spell just like his on screen victims. This movie is a masterpiece; it is true gothic horror, it is incredibly sexy, it is gripping, it is haunting, I want to go see it again right now. Also, I want to emphasize that while I wrote this, I kept getting frustrated by the fact that no positive adjective will be 100% accurate at describing how incredible this film is. Score 10/10
