Step on up for the battle of the Pennywise entities. For Part 1 of our Pennywise franchise special, we take a look at the original IT book, the 1990 miniseries starring Tim Curry, the documentary of the miniseries and the 2017 and 2019 film adaptations starring Bill Skarsgard.Follow the Complete Guide to Horror Movies podcast on our social channels below.↪ TikTok↪ Twitter↪ Facebook↪ Instagram↪ Subscribe to our YouTube channel↪ Shop our Store!↪ Tip us $5↪ Linktree↪ LetterboxdIt (also known as Stephen King's IT) is a 1990 ABC two-part psychological horror drama miniseries directed by Tommy Lee Wallace and adapted by Lawrence D. Cohen from Stephen King's 1986 novel of the same name. The story revolves around a predatory monster that can transform itself into its prey's worst fears to devour them, allowing it to exploit the phobias of its victims. It mostly takes the humanoid form of Pennywise, an evil clown. Cast members included Tim Curry (Pennywise), Richard Thomas, Annette O'Toole, John Ritter, Harry Anderson, Jonathan Brandis, Tim Reid, Dennis Christopher, and others. Produced by Green/Epstein Productions, It was filmed over a period of three months in Vancouver, British Columbia, in mid-1990 with a budget of $12 million, double the usual television budget. While divided critical perspectives towards It have continued in later years, the miniseries has become most known for Curry's version of Pennywise, considered by several publications to be one of the scariest clown characters in film and television. It has also spawned an Indiegogo-funded documentary film about the miniseries' production, titled Pennywise: The Story of It (2020); and an alternate history sequel short named Georgie, also by the producers of the documentary. It (titled onscreen as It Chapter One) is a 2017 American supernatural horror film directed by Andy Muschietti and written by Chase Palmer, Cary Fukunaga, and Gary Dauberman. Starring Jaeden Lieberher and Bill Skarsgård, the film was produced by New Line Cinema, KatzSmith Productions, Lin Pictures, and Vertigo Entertainment.A critical and commercial success, the film set box office records and grossed over $704 million worldwide, becoming the third-highest-grossing R-rated film at the time of its release, and grossed over $719 million through subsequent re-releases. Unadjusted for inflation, it became the highest-grossing horror film of all time. The film received generally positive reviews, with critics praising the performances, direction, cinematography and musical score, and was called one of the best Stephen King adaptations. The second film, It Chapter Two, was released in 2019, covering the remainder of the book. Bill Skarsgård gör huvudrollen i Gus Van Sants nya film Dead Man´s Wire Lyssna på alla avsnitt i Sveriges Radios app.

Rod Blackhurst is a filmmaker, director, and producer whose work spans documentary, narrative, and horror. He made his narrative feature debut with Here Alone, winner of the Audience Award at the 2016 Tribeca Film Festival, and later returned to Tribeca with Blood for Dust (2023), starring Scoot McNairy and Kit Harington. He also co-directed and produced the Emmy-nominated Netflix documentary Amanda Knox. He also co-created The White Room, a Blood List script later acquired by Amblin, and co-wrote the story for Blumhouse's Night Swim, which grew out of the 2014 short film he made with Bryce McGuire. Rod also directed and served as showrunner for Peacock's John Wayne Gacy: Devil in Disguise and directed on National Geographic's Welcome to Earth with Will Smith. His latest film, Dolly, is a beautifully shot 16mm slasher that evokes the grime and menace of early horror classics while carving out its own identity. In this episode, Rod and I talk about his path into filmmaking, the realities of getting indie films made, and the making of Dolly. Please enjoy this conversation with Rod Blackhurst.Key TakeawaysWear your influences openly, but metabolize and integrate them.Rod talks about The Texas Chain Saw Massacre as a major influence, and it is really clear when you see the movie, but he is careful not to recreate it in a way that feels like blatant homage. The useful principle is that inspiration works best when it is absorbed into the DNA of the film and filmmaker rather than pasted on top of it as a wink. As a result, the movie feels like it takes place in the same world as these influences instead of attempting to overtly acknowledge or recreate them, which can take viewers out of the movie.Investor trust is built with transparency.Rod is one of the most financially responsible filmmakers I have spoken to. His financing advice is unusually concrete. He informs investors how the equity works, how they might recoup, what the timeline is, and acknowledges the very real risk that they could lose all their money. He also shows prior accounting and distribution sheets to demonstrate his own personal track record, treating his career like a business, which it is. That mindset treats filmmaking as entrepreneurship, not just art, and it is one of the most practical pieces of advice in the conversation.Cast the person who can give the monster a soul.Rod found Max the Impaler through wrestling and quickly realized he had found more than a physical presence. Max's background as a largely nonverbal performance artist made them perfect to play Dolly, the slasher, and their emotional investment transformed the character into something much richer than what was on the page. Think about David Howard Thornton and Doug Jones. A monster is not just a costume and makeup job; it comes down to the soul of the performer.Show NotesMovies MentionedDollyThe Texas Chain Saw MassacreThe Evil DeadBlood for DustSnow White (1937/1938 animated film)The VanishingHigh TensionMartyrsBarbarianNight SwimUndertoneIt (via the Bill Skarsgård / Pennywise discussion)Castle in the SkyThe Iron GiantE.T. the Extra-TerrestrialProject Hail MaryMarty SupremeBackroomsObsessionHere AloneFollow Rod Blackhurst at:IMBd: https://www.imdb.com/name/nm2060444/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/rodblackhurst/X (Twitter): https://x.com/rodblackhurstVimeo: https://vimeo.com/rodblackhurstWebsite: https://www.rodblackhurst.com/

Funnier and sharper than you'd expect, and a lot more honest about relationships. Then brother Bill Skarsgård shows up in Gus Van Sant's Dead Man's Wire, an offbeat thriller based a true-life hostage-taker, Tony Kiritsis, wanting to get back what he was owed. Laura and Elliot discuss the possible message behind Van Sant making this film, right now, in a world where Luigi Mangione fan edits are trending. And Laura and her folk-drenched past is eager to chat about History of Sound. I cannot stress enough how the character development in this show did not cease to amaze me and to truly understand Pennywise, you have to understand what he represents. However, there is one character in the series I would love to know more about, and that is Periwinkle herself, the daughter of Pennywise as the younger adaptation played by the extremely talented Emma-Leigh Cullum who delivered her role flawlessly.I had the honor and pleasure of sitting down with this young and amazing actress who we have all come to love as Young Periwinkle, the daughter of the notorious clown, Pennywise. She went into great detail regarding what it was like on set with Bill Skarsgård, the dynamic on and off set, the makeup process, and what she liked the most about her character. As an actress in a period piece, one might want to do some research about the era ensuing in the show, but Emma did not do any research and that is what talent is all about and I can most certainly agree that she is very talented. It: Welcome to Derry is still streaming on HBO Max and Apple TV. I highly encourage checking out the show. And if you are like me, I love origin stories and this series is heading in that direction.

This week we get down to the wire - the DEAD MAN'S WIRE (2:56), that is! (Hey-o!). This drama about a well-known-to-Hoosiers (like Dave) historical incident didn't really work for us. Which incident, you ask? Why, a very public kidnapping! Bill Skarsgård plays a disgruntled Indianapolis resident who holds a mortgage executive hostage over a loan dispute. Featuring an unrecognizable Cary Elwes and Kelly Lynch in small roles (and a recognizable over-the-top - natch - Al Pacino in another), we kind of rip DMW a new one. Following that, we tackle Albert Birney's OBEX (25:57), which is more of a split decision. In it, a man climbs into a fictional 1987 computer game to resuce his dog, avoid cicadas, and battle stop-motion-like skeletons. Over on Patreon, we watched Park Chan-wook's 2003 action thriller OLDBOY.
Returning to the podcast after seven years, the filmmaker Gus Van Sant (“Drug Store Cowboy”, Good Will Hunting”) with a new film called “Dead Man’s Wire”. Based on a true story, the 1977 kidnapping of a prominent banker grips the nation and turns the abductor into an outlaw folk hero. As the media frenzy peaks, the standoff becomes a spectacle of desperation, defiance and blurred justice, which resonates even today. The film stars Bill Skarsgård in the main role as Tony Kiritsis, alongside an ensemble cast that includes Dacre Montgomery, Cary Elwes, Myha’la, Colman Domingo, and Al Pacino. “Dead Man’s Wire” opens Friday, January 9th in select theaters and then goes wide nationally on Friday, January 16th. https://youtu.be/42O-lJfP5Lw

HUGE REVEALS THIS WEEK!! IT: Welcome to Derry Full Episode Reaction Watch Along: / thereelrejects Roxy Striar, Tara Erickson, & Andrew Gordon dive into Episode 6 of IT: Welcome to Derry, the supernatural horror prequel set in 1962 Derry, Maine and developed by Andy Muschietti, Barbara Muschietti, and Jason Fuchs. After Episode 5's long-awaited Pennywise reveal, the back half of the season shifts into higher gear — escalating the town's paranoia, government interference, and the kids' desperate fight to understand what's living beneath Derry. Episode 6, “In the Name of the Father,” is officially confirmed as the next installment and continues the fallout from the Neibolt Street events. Public previews indicate a heavier focus on Dick Hallorann as he's forced to rely on his psychic “Shine” in the face of mounting evil, while the approaching tragedy of The Black Spot looms larger over Derry's future. Episode 6 leans into deeper IT-mythology — including hints toward Pennywise's unsettling human identity “Bob Gray” and new visions that blur the line between memory, fear, and manipulation. Key cast members driving the episode include: Bill Skarsgård (Barbarian, Hemlock Grove) as Pennywise / It, now emerging more openly as the town spirals; Jovan Adepo (Babylon, Creed II) as Leroy Hanlon; Taylour Paige (Zola, Ma Rainey's Black Bottom) as Charlotte Hanlon; Chris Chalk (Perry Mason, Gotham) as Dick Hallorann, whose connection to the Shine ties directly into Derry's evil, & More. With Pennywise's influence spreading, Derry's institutions fracturing, & the kids pushing closer to the truth at huge personal cost, Episode 6 promises more lore, bigger scares, and a nasty ramp-up toward the season's final catastrophe. Welcome to Derry Episode 5 finally gives us what everyone's been begging for: Pennywise. In the sewer. In full nightmare mode. In this Thumb War recap, we break down everything from the genuinely awesome parts — Bill Skarsgård's terrifying Pennywise reveal, the triple-decker teeth, the contortions, the hallucinatory sewer sequences — to the parts that made us feel like we were taking crazy pills. Including: • The indigenous prophecy lore dump that explains why everyone in Derry acts insane • “There's something in the water — clown shit” (not our words, the episode's) • The soldiers making the absolute worst tactical decisions in TV history • A major character death that makes ZERO spatial sense • Whether Matty's emo sewer glow-up actually worked • Our ongoing fight with the YouTube algorithm thanks to… certain phrases • Why the acting and production design continue to be the saving grace of this series This is a spoiler-filled, chaotic, honest recap of Episode 5 — the good, the bad, and the “why is everyone in this show so dumb?” Full transcript moments include Pennywise illusions, failed plans, secret shards, hallucinations, and multiple “are you serious?” plot beats. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. See pcm.adswizz.com for information about our collection and use of personal data for advertising.
In Derry, the past never stays buried. Set in 1962, "IT: Welcome to Derry" rewinds Stephen King's nightmare town to a moment of postcard innocence and slowly peels the veneer off to show the rot underneath. The new HBO series acts as a prequel to "IT" and "IT: Chapter Two", following the Hanlon family as they're pulled into another brutal cycle of disappearances, hauntings, and a certain grinning figure who feeds beneath the streets. Bill Skarsgård returns as Pennywise, joined by newcomers James Remar, Taylour Paige, Jovan Adepo, and Chris Chalk.Joining host Mike DeAngelo for the podcast are executive producers Andy Muschietti and Barbara Muschietti, along with co-showrunners Jason Fuchs and Brad Caleb Kane, who walk through how this new cycle came to life and why the Kingverse has far deeper corners than the films could ever reach.

Miles Ekhardt is making his mark in Hollywood with his role in HBO's supernatural horror series, "IT: Welcome to Derry." Miles stars as Matty, a young runaway who flees his small-town cinema only to be picked up by a Portland-bound family of four, soon realizing that something far more sinister lurks beneath the surface. A prequel to the blockbuster It films of 2017 and 2019, the series expands on Stephen King's iconic 1986 novel, diving deep into the origins of the terrifying Pennywise the Clown (reprised by Bill Skarsgård). Created by Andy Muschietti, Barbara Muschietti, and Jason Fuchs, "IT: Welcome to Derry" weaves together history, the supernatural, and psychological terror into a chilling exploration of fear and community. To prepare for "IT: Welcome to Derry," Miles worked closely with his acting coach to explore the emotional layers of Matty, bringing authenticity and depth to the role. “We all float down here.” Join Ian & Kev, along with BFF of the BFE: James DeGuzman, for our 302nd episode as we descend into the sewers of Derry, Maine, and confront childhood trauma, red balloons, and Stephen King nightmare fuel with It: Chapter One (2017). Megs and Liam? They said they weren't afraid of clowns… right up until Pennywise offered them a balloon. We're hoping they resurface soon. This week we discuss: Why It tapped into a new generation's fear of clowns — and whether it's earned or just clever filmmaking. Bill Skarsgård's terrifying turn as Pennywise — physicality, psychology, and drool. How the film balances coming-of-age warmth with soul-shaking horror — friendship vs. fear. King's original novel vs. the adaptation — what gets streamlined, what gets lost, and what gets under your skin. Does this film prove that horror is strongest when it's tied to universal childhood anxieties? How the film is able to position that early coming-of-age feelings of romance without coming across as creepy The Losers' Club: perfect casting? We break down who stands out and who feels underserved. Why the sewer sequences and the house on Neibolt Street raise the bar for modern horror set pieces. Ian talks about narrative structure and why splitting the story into “kid chapter” and “adult chapter” was the smartest possible move. James brings the expert scare analysis — and takes the BFE to task over their anti-horror bias Does Pennywise's final reveal hold up — or does CGI drain the fear away? And finally, whether It: Chapter One is the Best Film Ever — or just the best nightmare you'll keep watching anyway. Roxy Striar, Tara Erickson & Andrew Gordon react to Episode 1 of IT: Welcome to Derry — the chilling new prequel series from Andy Muschietti & Barbara Muschietti (who brought us the films IT (2017) and IT: Chapter Two). Set in 1962 in the eerily haunted town of Derry, Maine, this first episode plunges us straight into the dark origins of the evil entity known as Pennywise and the terrifying undercurrents of a seemingly quiet town. The cast features Bill Skarsgård (reprising his role as Pennywise – Barbarian, Hemlock Grove) alongside Taylour Paige as Charlotte Hanlon (The Toxic Avenger), Jovan Adepo as Leroy Hanlon (Babylon), and Chris Chalk as Dick Hallorann (Perry Mason, Gotham)—all battling the rising terror that first gripped Derry. Stand-out, highly searched moments in this premiere include the opening bloodbath sequence that sets the tone for the season, the first eerie encounter with children hearing voices in the pipes, and the brief but bone-chilling glimpse of Pennywise emerging from darkness. With its mix of vintage 1960s Americana, supernatural dread, and Stephen King mythos, this premiere sets the stage for a horror saga that goes beyond jump scares — it digs into generational trauma, town secrets, and the evil that lingers just beneath the surface. Tara Erickson & Andrew Gordon react to IT: Chapter Two (2019), the terrifying conclusion to Andy Muschietti's (The Flash, Mama) adaptation of Stephen King's classic horror novel. Set 27 years after the events of IT (2017), the Losers' Club reunites as adults when Pennywise the Dancing Clown resurfaces in the town of Derry to feed once again. The all-star cast includes James McAvoy (X-Men: First Class, Split) as Bill Denbrough, Jessica Chastain (Molly's Game, Interstellar) as Beverly Marsh, Bill Hader (Barry, Superbad) as Richie Tozier, Isaiah Mustafa (Shadowhunters, Old Spice ads) as Mike Hanlon, Jay Ryan (Beauty and the Beast, Top of the Lake) as Ben Hanscom, James Ransone (The Wire, Sinister) as Eddie Kaspbrak, and Andy Bean (Power, Here and Now) as Stan Uris. Bill Skarsgård (Barbarian, Hemlock Grove) once again delivers a chilling, transformative performance as Pennywise, the ancient evil haunting Derry's sewers. Iconic and highly searched moments include Pennywise's return beneath the bleachers, the funhouse mirror sequence, the Chinese restaurant reunion, Bill Hader's standout emotional scenes, and the final battle in the caverns of Derry. With a mix of shocking scares, heartfelt nostalgia, and haunting imagery, IT: Chapter Two explores the trauma of childhood and the courage it takes to face your deepest fears. A visually striking and emotionally charged finale, IT: Chapter Two closes out Muschietti's duology with heart, horror, and the enduring message that friendship is stronger than fear. This week, Da7e and Neil return to your feeds to kick off their Derry era as they prepare for the arrival of Welcome to Derry on HBO at the end of the month. They begin their journey with a rewatch of 2017's It: Chapter One. In The Calm [04:26], they discuss how the film was developed by Cary Fukunaga before ultimately landing in the hands of Andy Muschietti. They explore the adaptation choices that led to more of Bill Skarsgård's Pennywise ending up on screen, chart the timeline of the Derry's horrific history, and highlight what elements of the book were left out. Then in The Storm [01:15:38], Da7e breaks down the red band trailer for Welcome to Derry. Next week, the pod heads back to Derry for 2019's It: Chapter Two and a final preview of everything we know about Welcome to Derry prior to its debut. DEFENDANT: Pennywise the Dancing Clown EVIDENCE: Manos Special Edition "IT" Cabernet Sauvignon SCENE OF THE CRIME: Derry, Maine -- Hey friend — pull up a chair (but maybe keep an eye on the storm drain). In this episode we crack open some Manos vino and dive headfirst into Stephen King's It: the book, the 1990 miniseries, and the 2017/2019 films. We chat about why the various adaptations land so differently, what makes Pennywise terrifying (Tim Curry vs. Bill Skarsgård), and how the story's big ideas — childhood trauma, memory, and fear — get handled across formats. We also get candid about the parts that don't sit right: problematic elements in the book, how King's worldview shows up in his writing, and why some of his choices (yep, we mean that one scene) feel unnecessary and disturbing. It's a frank, cozy, and sometimes messy convo — the kind you'd have with your snarkiest, warmest friends over a glass (or three). If you love horror history, behind-the-scenes casting tea, and judge-y takes on iconic scenes, this episode is for you. And if you're terrified of clowns or storm drains... we hear you. We'll hold the light while you walk by the gutter.
Last year, director Robert Eggers, who burst onto the horror filmmaking scene with The Witch and The Lighthouse, premiered his remake of the classic 1922 silent German Expressionist vampire film. Starring Lily-Rose Depp, Nicholas Hoult, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Emma Corrin, Ralph Ineson, and Willem Dafoe, the film sees Bill Skarsgård step into the iconic Max Schreck role of Count Orlock. This is adaptation of Bram Stoker's Dracula bewitched audiences, becoming Egger's highest-grossing film to date, and earned four Academy Awards nominations for Best Cinematography, Best Costume Design, Best Production Design, and Best Makeup and Hairstyling. But as we kick off our month of spooky movies, are our hosts seduced by this symphony of horror. Or, like a bad cover version, is Eggers' take ultimately toothless?
