Matt Lister aka Cobra Commander joins to talk chiptune music, retrocomputing, and some classic G.I. Joe and Transformers. Trackers, hardware, and sound chips, oh my! What is MIDI (and can MIDI be chiptunes)? PAL, NTSC and electron guns. Atari 2600 game development and racing the beam. Yars' Revenge had very tricky programming. Behold the Casio XW-PD1 Trackformer, aka the Millennium Falcon, and grovel before its amazingness. Shane Plays Geek Talk Episode #246 - 9/1/2021 Like what you hear? Weiterlesen Folge 42: Chiptune Talk →

This episode we're going to focus on hardware based chiptune music, including gameboy songs made with the homebrew rom LSDj, Nintendo-style music made with NES compatible program Famitracker, and FM Synthesis like the Sega Genesis! Fans of old PC games will be pleased to know we've got an album created entirely on the Sound Blaster 16, a soundcard for home computers released back in 1992. That's what we're going to hear first, by chiptune legend and Oxygen Star who got his start performing live drums at PAX East in Boston. Want to make some chiptunes like these? Hi! This is my very first attempt to creating any kind of chiptunes (if you don't count playing around in the GBA game Pocket Music). I used Famitracker which I had to watch guides on youtube how to even get sound out of, so I'm a complete and utter beginner. Anyway, I'm aware the song is pretty... conformative and straight on, there's no real groove to it (during the verses at least) if you ask me. I'd love to hear advice on how to achieve more "soul". It's up on youtube as well: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GYoc6UQWxr0 2020 Creative Commons CC Attribution Noncommercial No Derivative Works (BY-NC-ND)
