Most of the time a simple microphone technique can fix all of your podcast sound problems. It might be the difference from sounding cheap and amateur to a professional sound. The microphones that I recommend for ALL budgets. Blue Yeti --- This is a podcasting microphone LEGEND if you have right at $74-$100 to spend on a microphone this is the one. Heil PR40 --- This is my current microphone and if your budget is a little more this is the go to podcasting mics for TONS of creators out there. 1.) Microphone Placement This one is tough to explain in that you need to get close to the microphone BUT not so close to where you are touching it. I like to always say pinkie to thumb. Measure the distance from the microphone from your pinky to your thumb. This is a great rule of thumb. 2.) DONT Talk Directly Towards The Mic If you have the mic pointed directly at your face it will cause really bad plosives as the blasts of air of some letters make go straight from your mouth. Adjust the mic to go around your mouth so you are talking past the microphone as opposed to directly into the mic. 3.) Make ZERO contact with you mic during recording Most decent microphones are extremely sensitive to touch and vibrations, and because of this you need to be very aware of what is going on around the microphone and the stand/arm. If you accidentally touch the mic while recording, go back and re-record that segment again. This will greatly effect the sound due to the vibrations that it will cause. 4.) Don't' Drift Your Head As You Speak A lot of people are what I like to call "Drifters". This means that whenever you begin speaking into the mic your head goes from one area to another. This occurs a lot with people who speak with their hands and their body. If you are at different distances from the microphone at different times during the recording it will sound like it's fading in and out. Stay consistent with the distance you are from the microphone. 5.) USE A POP FILTER This one should be self-explanatory BUT you would be surprised at how many beginner podcasters and people using a microphone don't use a pop filter. They are not that expensive and it makes a WORLD of difference when listening back to the audio. This will eliminate all of those PLOSIVE P sounds and other dramatic sounds your breath will make when speaking naturally. I use LyxPro Mop-28, BUT there are many out there that will work just fine.
