#539 In this episode of the podcast, I chat with Bryan Caporicci, a seasoned wedding photographer who blends business acumen with artistic passion. Bryan shares insights into navigating the photography landscape by focusing on foundational skills, emphasizing patience, and finding personal joy in photography. He highlights the importance of technical mastery before creative exploration and the value of building meaningful connections.THE BIG IDEAS Master the Basics: Understand your camera settings thoroughly before diving into complex photography scenarios. A solid foundation sets the stage for creativity. Practice Under Pressure: Learn to operate your camera instinctively in high-pressure situations. This skill is invaluable, particularly in fast-paced environments like weddings.Slow Down for Success: Embrace a patient approach to photography and avoid rushing through your learning process. Long-term success is built gradually.Embrace Creativity: Once technical mastery is second nature, focus on capturing moments, emotions, and stories that resonate and tell a unique narrative.PHOTOGRAPHY ACTION PLANEnhance Technical Confidence: Spend an hour each day practicing different camera settings until they become second nature. Conduct small self-assigned projects focusing on low-light and fast-paced scenarios.Develop Real-World Experience: Volunteer as a second shooter for a local event photographer to gain experience. Shadow a professional to learn the dynamics of different shoot environments. Build a Portfolio of Experiences: Select 5 personal favorite photos that highlight varied skills like lighting, composition, and emotion. Create a physical or digital album and update it monthly to track progress.Connect with Professional Circles: Attend local photography meet-ups to network and seek mentorship. Practice engaging with other photographers through collaborative projects or photo walks.Explore Personal Creativity: Dedicate time each week to a creative project that pushes your boundaries. Experiment with different genres of photography to discover new inspirations.RESOURCES:Visit Bryan Caporicci's Website - https://www.bcapphoto.com/Follow Bryan Caporicci on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/bcapphoto/Learn What Camera Settings to Use in our free guide!https://perfectcamerasettings.com/ Sign up for your free CloudSpot Account today at www.DeliverPhotos.comConnect with Raymond! Hey there, listeners! Welcome back to another episode of “The Profitable Photographer with Luci Dumas”. I am absolutely thrilled to have Bryan Capricci as my guest today.CEO and Founder of Sprout Studio, a CRM built by photographers, for photographers, Bryan is also an award-winning wedding and portrait photographer based out of Fonthill, Canada. In 2014, he was awarded his Masters of Photographic Arts (MPA) designation by the Professional Photographers of Canada (PPOC), making him one of the youngest Canadian photographers to receive this level of achievement. He and I are diving into a topic that's crucial for every business owner out there: balancing the roles of CEO and entrepreneur. It's all about how we manage working in our business versus working on our business. Let's get started! It's not just about running the day-to-day operations but also about strategizing for future growth. We chat about the importance of not waiting until you have free time—make it a priority to focus on growth and improvement. Also how to make sure your efforts are intentional, planned, and prioritized. Listen for his rocking horse analogy i.e., you're moving, but not going anywhere. This is what happens when we get caught up in busy work. Remember, "small hinges move big doors."Determining Business Success:How do we know if we're on the right track? Here's a simple formula to define business success and growth: New Leads: Are you consistently attracting new potential clients? Bookings: Are those leads converting into bookings? Higher Value: Are clients booking higher-value services? Client Spending: Are existing clients increasing their spending?Evaluating Impact:When considering tasks, ask yourself: How likely is this activity to impact the business? Don't fall into the trap of being busy for the sake of it. Remember, sometimes as photographers, we identify so closely with our work that we sacrifice personal time. Let's break that cycle.Momentum Method:Here are important questions to help get a handle on everything: Can This Be Automated? Ask if the task can be done without your direct involvement. If yes, automate it. Accelerate: Are there ways to do tasks faster with less effort. Simplify: Can the task be simplified or aligned with other activities? Evaluate Necessity: Does this task need to be done at all?You might not love every aspect of running a business, and that's okay. You have three options: Don't Do It: Some tasks might not be necessary. Do It: Just get it done if it's essential. Collaborate or Outsource: Find someone to help, whether through collaboration or hiring. Thanks for tuning in! Remember, balancing your roles and prioritizing your time can make a significant difference in your business's success. Until next time, keep pushing forward and finding those small hinges that move big doors!Bryan has a gift called The Winning Week Formula at https://getsproutstudio.com/winning-week/and 20% discount available https://www.trysproutstudio.com/?via=eduConnect with Bryan:bryan@sproutstudio.comgetsproutstudio.com www.bcapphoto.comConnect with Photography Business Coach Luci Dumas: Website Email: luci@lucidumas.comInstagram FacebookYouTube

In today’s interview, Bryan talks about the key aspects of photography to focus on when just getting started.   In This Episode You'll Learn: What is Clubhouse for photographers Who Bryan is and how he got started in photography His earliest struggles and how he overcame them How to avoid overwhelm when just learning photography What Bryan hopes to achieve by shooting film for personal work Premium Members Also Learn: What to focus on now to build a business foundation How to leverage local relationships to build bookings The 3 most important pillars of stating a photo business The paradox of the growing heap and how it will help you better understand bookings Resources: Bryan Caporicci Wedding Photography The Business of Photography Podcast Sprout Studio - All in one studio management for photographers Standout Quotes: "It was my marketing skills, just the fact that I looked at what I did as an entrepreneur...that's what got me to where I was". - [Bryan] "Take it a step at a time, I think that's probably the biggest mistake that I see photographers make, especially in those early days". - [Bryan] "That's when you become a good wedding photographer when you can look at things and go beyond the technical". - [Bryan] "Every overnight success is an overnight success 10 years in the making". - [Bryan] "The future is cheap if you pay for it now". - [Raymond] "Everyone wants success, no one wants to put in the work that success requires". - [Bryan] "Whatever gear you have, is all that you need right now". - [Bryan]   Key Takeaways: "Clubhouse" is an audio-only social media tool, that allows people to connect either as photographers or with other professionals Bryan shares he has always had a passion for the business side of photography. His experience knowing that most photographers aren't well equipped on the business side motivated the founding of Sprout Studios to offer strategies and tools to help photographers run their business. While most photographers start with an interest in photography and then later incorporate the business side, Bryan had been involved with the business side first but moved into photography after splitting up with his partner who was running the photography aspect of things. Starting, he took up photography on a small scale largely involving sports including all the local sports teams which helped him learn, create systems, and build his skill. The biggest challenge about weddings is the fast pace not only due to the number of events going on at each moment but also technical changes you need to make, to adjust for each shot. Bryan describes defined paths for a new photographer: First, you need to understand the technicals, then learn how to do it under pressure, and then learn how to find moments. Emphasizing the importance of having a mindset to put in the time necessary for growth, Bryan stresses the role of 2nd shooting as an intern, to learn the ropes. The rewards of being an entrepreneur are beautiful but it takes work to get them, and the early days are always the hardest. Don't chase the gear.

What are people buying when they’re looking for video? I bet it’s not what you’re thinking. It’s not your videos, believe it or not. There’s so much more to it than that. They’re buying an idea and an experience. Even though you make beautiful videos, none of that matters if you can’t sell the experience you offer. Bryan Caporicci is the lead content creator at Sprouting Photographer and the host of his own podcast. He teaches workshops across North America including at some big conventions and conferences like WPPI, Shutterfest, and Canada Photo Convention. He’s built an incredible business helping photographers in a similar way that we at Studio Sherpas work to help filmmakers. Bryan is a business person first and a creative second, but that’s hard to tell if you only see his work. In this episode, Bryan shakes up the narrative by explaining that your clients are not looking to buy video. They probably think they are, but they’re not. What they want is an unbelievable customer experience that they’ll remember whenever they watch, or even just think about the videos you made for them. We go on to talk about surviving the natural feast or famine cycles of this business. Bryan suggests you lean into the slow season and use it as a break to assess your business and prepare for the next year. Otherwise, you should be proactive to lay the foundation for getting low season work well ahead of time. Either way, you can use this period to your advantage. What do you do to ensure your clients have an unforgettable experience? Drop me a comment on the episode page!   In this episode: Identifying your role as an entrepreneur in a creative business What you should actually be selling your clients instead of video One of the most common mistakes that creative entrepreneurs make and how to avoid making it too How to strategically design and implement an effective and compelling brand Useful ideas you can use to survive the ups and downs of high and low seasons Taking the reins of the selling process instead of letting the client be in total control The importance of being intentional with everything you do with your business   Quotes: “Business is business. Whether you’re doing filmmaking for a living, whether you’re making pictures for a living, or you’re building software for a living, whatever it is, the basics of business are still the basics of business.” [10:47] “You’re selling the end product and you’re selling who you help your clients become and what you help them do more than you are the actual thing you’re making for them.” [12:19] “You have to realize that marketing has a half-life. It always has a delay. What you market and message and do now, you might not see the effects of that for another two, three, four months.” [32:18] “We as the entrepreneur, as the business owner, as the creative, need to be the ones who are guiding the experience for our clients. If we’re order takers, if we’re bending over backward for them, if we’re reacting to them, there’s no room left for us to say ‘okay, here’s what I’d suggest we do next.” [40:55]   Links: Find Bryan at Sprouting Photographer Follow Bryan on Facebook | Instagram | Twitter | Youtube | Vimeo Business of Photography Podcast Building a Storybrand by Donald Miller   Let me know what you want on this podcast by filling out this survey!   Additional Links: Check out the full show notes page Selling Like A Sherpa Course Stay up to date with everything we're doing at Studio Sherpas Tune into our weekly Facebook Lives Follow Studio Sherpas on Facebook | Twitter | Instagram   If you haven't already, we'd love it if you would take 1 minute to leave us a review on iTunes!

Today's episode is genuinely inspiring not only because Bryan Caporicci an award-winning photographer shares the inside scoop on his journey as a creative. However, he's not just and photographer but also an educator and supporter of fellow creatives. Sharing advice in a simple, clear way he might just inspire you to take action. He's a real specialist when it comes to helping photographers run their businesses, which means he's sharing his top tips on the show. Even though he's specialist, he's sharing knowledge that will help every creative no matter what your creating. Takeaways from today's show: See yourself as an entrepreneur, that happens to be a creative. Not the other way round. Running a creative business means you spent 20% of the time creating your actual creative work and the rest promoting it and running your business. Surround yourself with people or tools that support your weaknesses or take away work that you don't have to be doing, so you can spend more time creating your creative work. Don't wait until you feel ready to charge for your creative work, just start charging for your work and increase prices slowly. This is a massive episode of the Beginner Photography Podcast. I have gone back and looked at all of my interviews in 2017 to compile a list of my biggest takeaways from our great guest photographers. From learning great shooting techniques to business advice to life lessons this, The Beginner Photography Podcast has taught me so much, I want to share it with you! 1: There is Room For All of Us! New photographers tend to think their market is always so saturated and that it is impossible to make any ground unless you have been shooting forever. Go back to Ana Brandts Interview and hear how she had a career before getting into photography, and now she is one of the worlds best!  2: Photography is Not About The Money Photography is not traditionally a lucrative career. What it can afford you is free time. If you really want to make it as a photographer, take the advice Ben Hartley Shared. Money should be the result of your efforts, not the goal of your photography. If you chase the money first you are going to get burnt out quick. 3: The Power of Visualization If you want to grow your skills as a photographer you need to hone your craft. Take Marc Silbers Advice, Visualize the photo in your head before you snap the shutter. Don't just react to whats in front of your camera. There is very little growth there. Work hard to get your photo.  4: Think Outside The Box Just go back to my interview with Taylor Jackson. He took his skills as a photographer to offer hotels around the world, his work in exchange for a room for a few nights. He is now able to travel just about anywhere in the world for free because he thought to do something different.  5: Prints are Not Dead One of the biggest questions I get from new photographers is how to sell prints when clients only want the digital files. When I interviewed Bryan Caporicci he tackled this subject directly. He shared several great ways to increase your clients desire for printed images.  6: It Takes More Than A Great Photo to be Successful!  Photography is more than just being able to snap a good photo. It takes customer service, it takes planning, it takes thinking outside the box. There are plenty of photographers out there who are INCREDIBLE but they are dead broke. Proving the quality of your photo is not directly related to your success. Go back and listen to Sports Photographer Vinny Pugliese or Luxury Destination Wedding Photographer Biran Leahy's interview for proof!  7: You Don't Need To Go Full Time This year I interviewed Canadian Landscape Photographer James Wheeler, a man who has a full-time job that he loves and still makes money passively through his photography. He has found a way to make photography work for his life. As his job, he has benefits, insurance, a retirement plan, and a steady paycheck. For his family, that is incredibly important. Although he is a talented photographer he does not feel the need to go full time, and neither should you if it's not the right decision for you and your lifestyle.  8: Every Client is not an Ideal Client Back when I interviewed Wedding Business Coach Heidi Thompson, she shared something most new photographers don't understand. The Ideal Client. When you're new to photography its easy to photograph anyone who is willing to pay you money. But this path will suck all the joy out of shooting and leave you with no sense of pourpose. She shared how to define your ideal client and how to find them!  9: Location is Not Everything This goes against everything you have ever heard. Husband and Wife Wedding Photographers Phillip and Eileen Blume share how they get their prominent clients to travel more than an hour out of their way to come to their location for a photo session. It is all about differentiating yourself! 10: Why Trust is SO Important Trust is all you have in life. Photography is not a product, it's a service. A luxury service at that. No one NEEDS a photographer. You need your clients to have full trust in you. Back when I interviewed Colorado Wedding Photographer Timothy Faust, he shared how trust has impacted and has grown his business. In fact, he offers a 100% money back Guarantee JUST to build trust. 11: A Huge Social Following Isn't Everything Have you ever seen a photographer on Instagram whos photos are pretty amateur yet they have tens of thousands of followers? You feel like they have something you don't, you feel like they have it figured out, you feel like, "If I could just have those followers I would be set!" My first interview of the year I talked to wedding photographer BJ Matthews who has over 24k Instagram followers. He gets several hundreds of likes for every photo he posts and yet, he still feels insecurities when posting photos, insecurities in his work. Despite having thousands of people praise him everytime he uploads. Just like the money, your followers should be a result of your efforts not the goal of your photography.

We're digging into exactly why using busyness as a form of measurement for success, joy or happiness is fundamentally flawed! Always on-purpose and always with intent, our guest Bryan Caporicci creates things - images, education, articles, podcasts, and software.
