Justin O'Brien was one of those in the online gardening world that welcomed and embraced us. So it's an absolute treat to get the man himself behind the microphone to chat all things gardening. Perhaps better known as his Instagram alias of Urban Farmer, Justin O'Brien has been gardening in some form since he was a kid, and was an active member of the Camden Community Garden for nearly a decade, seeing it through the floods of 2022., Justin and his wife Chantelle purchased their current home nearly 3 years ago, and Justin documents the garden transformation, sharing plenty of useful tips and lots of laughs, as he creates a home for his veggies, his chickens and his family. Justin is also a fiercely competitive gardener and may or may not still be touchy about last year's failed competitive pumpkin growing. But before we get to that we're drinking a classic - Campari and soda. We're utilising Jac Semmler's succulent growing tips, we're loving Hannah Maloney's The Good Life, Maddie hard recommends Maggie McKellar's Graft. We're talking Organic Gardener Magazine, chimmichuri, putting up jute netting, and making the most of the spring rain thanks to a well-timed installation of a new gutter and tank system. Hurray! Find us on Instagram @avantgardeners.podcast. And pretty please share our podcast with a friend of yours and / or rate and review us wherever you get your podcasts. Thanks for being here :-)

In this week's episode of the podcast John chats with Jeff Lowenfels who is the author of a new book “Teaming with Bacteria” described as The Organic Gardener's Guide to Endophytic Bacteria and the Rhizoghagy Cycle” Now this sounds quite scientific but when you hear about bacteria and the function, they have in the soil then you will begin to understand why it is so important to nurture them so that you can reap their benefits. Jeff's other books all under the Teaming with series include Teaming with Microbes, Teaming with Nutrients, and Teaming with Fungi. In this episode you will hear all about how these mighty garden friends can help you in your garden. What is clear when you are promoting the soil food web in your garden. Through mulching, compost adding and especially using no dig gardening you are providing all your plants need. The microbes, fungi, and bacteria become your garden friends and will provide so many benefits many of which you cannot even know until you see it. Benefits such as higher yield, healthier more resilient plants, and super healthy soil. So, it is becoming clear to me, and I hope to you that we need to nurture our soil to start getting the benefits in our gardens. Interestingly Jeff is also the longest serving garden columnist in North America so get his books the Teaming With series of books. For more information you can find Jeff here. If you've listened to more than a few of my podcast episodes, you've likely noticed some common themes. One in particular is that everything in nature is interconnected in multiple ways. And today's episode demonstrates that in some mind bending ways. What's the topic? Well, it's an often overlooked subject. If it is handled well, it will sequester carbon, reduce the impacts of droughts, improve our water quality, and probably save you money. And if you need another hint, when it is healthy it also makes your food more nutritious. By now you probably guessed the topic - soil ecology and the soil food web.My guest today is Dr. Elaine Ingham. Dr. Ingham has over four decades of experience in soil biology, and is generally recognized as the foremost expert in the field. She is the primary author of the USDA Soil Biology Primer, and founder of Soil Food Web Inc, a group dedicated to empowering ordinary people to bring healthy soils back to life. Dr. Ingham has a B.A. in biology and chemistry from St. Olaf College, an M.S. in microbiology from Texas A&M University, and a Ph.D. in microbiology from Colorado State University. Our wide-ranging conversation only scratched the surface of soil ecology. As I said a moment ago, everything is interconnected, so it makes conversations like these somewhat challenging since, like soil ecology itself, everything inter-relates.So what did we cover? Well, we talked about the difference between dirt and soil, which is an ecosystem unto itself, consisting of varying amounts of fungi, bacteria, predators, and parasites such as protozoa and nematodes. Dr. Elaine discusses the entire process of how fungi, bacteria, and other organisms convert soil nutrients to forms readily available to plants, and how plants actually induce this behavior through chemical signaling. She discusses how plants trade sugars for nutrients from fungi, and how these trades are dynamic and constantly adjusting. We dig deep into how to measure soil health, and this includes how to compost and how to assess both soil and compost with a microscope. We surfaced from our microscopy deep dive to discuss easy shortcuts you can use to assess your own soil health and compost health without a microscope. And we touched on many other topics, such as the impact of soil compaction, and the negative impacts of inorganic fertilizers.Be sure to check out the show notes because some of the topics really require some visual aides. I've included a graphic provided by Dr. Elaine that summarizes the importance of soil health, as well as some videos showing Dr. Elaine' technique for mixing your soil solution for the microscope, and a video of some spirilla bacteria - they're pretty wild!FULL SHOW NOTES include links and videos too.People and OrganizationsSoil Food Web School - look for the resources and classes mentioned in the episodeSoil Regen Summit 2022 - March 15, 2022. The Urban Garden: 101 Ways to Grow Food and Beauty In the City is due March 2022. It is a dream come true to say I am an author...now to finish the second book. In the meantime... Cultivate is an industry event where vendors meet, share what's new for the next garden season, and more. Mrs. Know It All attended and had a great time. Jamaica Kincaid is an author whose writings are a part of my book family. One of my favorites is My Garden (Book). The excerpt I read truly struck a cord and tugged at my heartstrings. Certain authors really help center my thoughts. Kathy Jentz, Washington Gardener Magazine, and I co-authored a book that is available for pre-sale ordering. The book, The Urban Garden: 101 Ways to Grow Food and Beauty In the City has truly been a labor of love and quite the learning experience. I hope those who read it find useful ideas to incorporate into their small to average space gardens. In the meantime... During the height of the pandemic, we cared for our loved ones, for our sourdough starters in the fridge, and of course, for our plants. Being told to stay inside exposed the importance of feeling connected to the world around us, and to nature. Additionally, spending so much time at home increased our desire to curate a space for ourselves that felt nurturing and inviting. For many of us, the solution was simple: bring a piece of the outside in. Whether you're brand-new to the plant game or have had a ‘green thumb' your whole life, you know that the relationship between a plant parent and their plant is like no other. I was a lawyer, I worked for a fortune 500 company always been a gardener Tell me about your first gardening experience? my father had to take over a family 8 acres frustrated farmers all the magazines JI Rodale came over to the house for dinner I must have been about 10-11 How did you learn how to garden organically? My first memories are being pushed around in a wheel barrow by my father in the garden The first thing I planted was a wedding cake strawberry planter Im in Anchorage Alaska, the longest running garden columnist My new book is on a brand new kind of cannabis It will be the next tomato plant remember when the snap peas came out everybody had to grow them still growing them today has no photo period same size as a tomato produces from seed to harvest just like a tomato plant small plant one of the things I love about the books is the diagram in the back with the plant diagram, leaves plant leaves nitrogen deficiency if you don’t know what the photoperiod thing is cannabis has to have 12 hours day 12 hours night they require 12 hours + one minute poinsettias cactus triggered by length of light If you take a christmas cactus and leave it in a situation where it gets more daylight then darkness it won’t bloom no matter what. A Russian guy was wondering around in 1923. vo area Says he what is that? looks down and sees this little plant cannabis plant must have escaped from a hemp plantation growing for rope or something of that it thought. oh my gosh it’s gonna get cold here and I haven’t started to flower photoperiod In 1973 a bunch of hippie they came out with a commercial but the size of the whole plant was the size of a thermos bottle the whole plant it wasn’t very good the cannabis wasn’t very strong people lost interest continued to breed them in the background 5 years ago 3 years ago started to get great 2 years ago they were phenomenal And now if you go to a commercial dispensary in lots of places they are actually selling auto flower cannabis. When you use cbd products a lot of that comes from auto flower cbd plants. So if you are a home grower and you want to grow your own cbd auto flower. you could do that. I’m getting a little a little bit a head of myself. A lot of listeners are thinking, It’s all over Canada now, if you are not in a state where cannabis is legal, but it will be no question about it. It’s coming! (https://amzn.to/2rtq7Xv) As gardeners exciting event to wait for! these plants are spectacular. different colors different chemical extenuates It’s a whole new aspect of gardening! you can bread your own just like a tomato plant! so there you go, now I have 4 book I am looking for a 4th book for the series tell us little more about eh teaming series in general the teaming with microbes was a different type of book, when it came out so Timber Press my publisher, the publisher scratched their head they weren’t sure any of this was true! What I was talking about was how plants feed themselves! in a Support this podcast

Marion's Kodiak Organic Tomatos-Greenhouse grown "Grow organic food you want to eat." Marion Owen lives in Kodiak Alaska where she cares for her well-established organic garden. She grows foods she wants to eat. "The cool climate allows the kale to be sweeter. Green onions are huge!" "I live in Kodiak Alaska where there's the changing light and cooler climate. It's OK to put things in the compost pile. I learn from experience." "I grow food I want to eat but I also want to provide food for the late pollinators. I don't just garden for me but for other people, insects, birds. It's all inclusive." Marion saves bumble bees who get caught up in a deep freeze. Hear how she does it on the podcast. "Gardening is relaxing and reflective. I worked on a tug boat. I was getting tired of going out to sea. I had an internal conversation years ago. What do I want to do? Well two things came to my mind. Photography and gardening." "When I moved to Alaska and started my garden there was no dirt. Well I can't have dirt delivered so I had to make my own. The traditional way of composting would take too many years. I researched it. Hot composting was how I made dirt." "I add the green stuff and brown stuff and in a few days it heats up. I turned it and it would cool down, then heat up again. In a few weeks, not years, I had dirt!" "Sharing what I do is important. I've written for Alaska Magazine and I've also submitted photographs. I've been a keynote speaker at garden conferences and if I can garden in Kodiak then you can do it wherever you are in the world." "My garden is part of the earth. I think it's important to know where your food comes from because it's not all clean or healthy. Food security. Try supporting your local farmers' market and talk to the growers." "In Kodiak I used to write a gardening column in the Kodiak Daily Mirror. The articles are available online." " I also am an advocate of community outreach. I help others to grow their garden and I also do a Veggies at Work program. Anybody can do this. I approach a business and ask them to purchase materials to have a raised box or bed at their work site. I plant and harvest vegetables to take to the food bank. "There's more connections and more positive imprints with Veggies at Work program. Employees are responsible for the vegetables through watering and weeding. They get to leave their desk and enjoy being outside." Marion's Garden "I love photography. One of my favorite things is to not have an agenda for my photography. I want to be open to the gifts that are shown to me." "I have a bed and breakfast. Cliffhouse Bed and Breakfast. When I take patrons out on the boat for a photography class I want to help people bring home the memories and the best experience with photography. But also food. I use what is being produced in my garden for the Galley Gourmet Dinner Cruises." "When I am out walking I use all of my senses. The best writers say to use all of your senses. We forget about sound and smell and touch. Check in when you go for a walk. How do the trees or the grass feel?" "Puffins are a favorite bird of mine to watch and to also photograph. They are such interesting birds. They spend a good seven months or longer out at sea. They are more comfortable as a bird swimming in the water than flying. They have to beat their wings around 400 beats per minute or they fall to the earth." "Their beautiful beak colors are for the dating game. They lose their colorful sheath in late August. Kodiak has the Tufted puffin and the Horned puffin." "Humans think in terms of time but in nature there is no stopping or starting. It just continues to flow. We too are a continuous flow. We don't stop with living or dying." "I love to share. I'm not the grower or the photographer. I'm just the cheerleader. I can instill the realization into...

What is Homegrown Humus? Do you want to improve your soil fertility? Would you like to learn more about cover crops? Does growing your own fertilizer sound good to you? Have you been hearing about green manure but aren’t sure where to start? Well me too! Would you like to join me (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/2120487938/organic-gardener-cover-crop-course-beta-group) in this organic gardener course study group where we go through Anna Hess’ amazing primer (http://amzn.to/2fwFkBc) Homegrown Humus: Cover Crops in a No-Till Garden (http://amzn.to/2fwFkBc) ? Please join the kickstarter campaign today! (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/2120487938/organic-gardener-cover-crop-course-beta-group) “Homegrown humus is easy with cover crops! Cover crops are a simple, cheap way to boost your soil’s organic matter, to fight weeds, to prevent erosion, to attract pollinators, and to keep the ecosystem in balance. Unfortunately, most information on growing cover crops is written for people who plow their soil every year and are willing to spray herbicides. You can get all of the same benefits in a no-till garden, though, if you’re clever. Homegrown Humus details five no-till winners in depth — buckwheat, sweet potatoes, oilseed radishes, rye, and oats. Profiles of other species suggest gardening conditions when you might want to try out sunflowers, annual ryegrass, barley, Austrian winter peas, crimson clover, cowpeas, or sunn hemp as well. Meanwhile, the book delves into finding cover-crop seeds, planting cover crops in a no-till garden, and easily killing cover crops without tilling or herbicide use. Understanding the C:N ratio of cover crops helps determine how long to wait between killing cover crops and planting vegetables, as well as how to maximize the amount of humus you’re adding to your soil. Cover crops are an advanced gardening technique bound to increase your vegetable yields, but are simple enough for beginners. Give your garden a treat — grow some buckwheat!” from her amazon page (http://amzn.to/2fwFkBc) . What is Humus? Humus is the organic component of soil, formed by the decomposition of leaves and other plant material by soil microorganisms.
