The phrase “at the end of the tunnel” can be reminiscent of death. While this podcast isn’t about death itself, it often addresses the death of the part of ourselves that believes we don't have what we need in order to pursue our passion, our purpose, or our calling in life. It's a rebirth of what's truly important, which is saying yes to whatever is in our hearts. These conversations are about real people, with real obligations and real obstacles, that have somehow found the courage to say yes to what was in their heart. As a result, they found themselves on quite the adventure! This week's guest could be the poster child for that paradigm. Her name is Pam Grout, and she's a New York Times bestselling author, a travel blogger who has visited every continent except for Antarctica, and a student of A Course in Miracles. In this episode, Pam talks candidly about the loss of her daughter, the little rituals they shared, and how she has coped with the grief of her daughter’s passing. She shares the wisdom that she's gleaned from her adventures and from the rocky parts of her journey as well, because, even for those who know full well that we co-create our reality, life is still going to test us. Pam also describes her writing journey, the process of writing her bestseller, E-Squared, and her advice for those looking to write spiritual guidance books. Pam’s definition of success, after everything she has been through and after writing 20 books, is to see the face of God in every person she meets, and her whole story is incredibly inspiring, so make sure to tune in today!Key Points From This Episode:Pam’s favorite activity as a child was going to the library and reading.Listeners hear a bit more about Pam’s childhood, growing up in Kansas. If she wanted to achieve her dreams, Pam realized she had to come up with creative capital. Why Pam believes she always saw herself becoming a writer, even as a teenager.Pam’s first job at a newspaper and why she doesn’t consider herself a corporate person. What it meant to Pam to become a New York Times best-selling author.Choosing experiences over material things and becoming a travel writer in her 20s.Finding her spiritual foundation in a loving, benevolent force and learning to trust in it.Hearing God’s voice, questioning the source, and studying A Course in Miracles (ACIM).Pam provides a synopsis of what ACIM is and how it helped her choose a different path. How a psychic reading predicted her pregnancy and how Pam chose to see things differently. The affirmation or appeal to the universe Pam repeated when her daughter was a baby.Self-publishing Jumpstart Your Metabolism – why Pam decided to write that book.Links Mentioned in Today’s Episode:Pam Grout on TwitterPam Grout on LinkedInPam Grout on FacebookPam GroutA Course in MiraclesGod Doesn’t Have Bad Hair DaysTaz Grout’s 222 FoundationE-CubedLight Watkins

Polycystic ovarian syndrome creates hormonal imbalances in thyroid hormones as well as cortisol, estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, and insulin. Thankfully, many of these imbalances can be corrected by making different lifestyle choices relating to diet, sleep, exercise, and more. In this episode, you will hear some of Dr. Minni’s wisdom from the world of functional medicine that can be used to correct such hormonal imbalances caused by PCOS. A common theme from today’s show and an approach that helps to correct imbalances in almost all the hormones spoken of is the adoption of a Paleolithic diet. That means eating more fruits, vegetables, fish, eggs, poultry, and meat. Other lifestyle choices Dr. Minni talks about that change depending on the hormone include getting more sunlight, sleep, and exercise, trying to reduce stress whenever possible, and avoiding certain food groups too! Make sure you tune in today so you can learn how to crush your hormonal imbalances caused by PCOS!Key Points From This Episode:Hormonal imbalances caused by PCOS which have knock-on effects on other hormones. The number of hormones we have, their function, and the need for them to stay in balance.Connections between diet and hormones: You can eat to balance your hormones.Diet, sleep, and lifestyle advice for those who have hypothyroidism from PCOS.What to eat when you are insulin resistant, and the value of an increase in exercise. The importance of having healthy cortisol for keeping stress levels low.How to increase cortisol by getting sunlight, sleeping right, a Paleolithic diet, and reducing stress. The building blocks of cholesterol synthesis and the benefits of cholesterol for cortisol.Keeping estrogen and progesterone balanced with calories, a Paleolithic diet, and more. The effects of obesity, caffeine, and food that mimics the effects of estrogen on women.Keeping protein levels healthy with a Paleolithic diet and ghee, and what to avoid. Tweetables:“There are a lot of hormonal imbalances in polycystic ovarian syndrome, which further lead to hormonal imbalances.” — Dr. Minni Malhotra [0:00:36]“So as you can see that most of these hormones are supported by eating a Paleolithic diet, but specific hormones have specific needs.” — Dr. Minni Malhotra [0:12:11]Links Mentioned in Today’s Episode:Dr. Minni Malhotra on LinkedInAnchor Wellness Center

Fiction Writing Made Easy
4 Reasons Why You Need a Target Word Count

Fiction Writing Made Easy

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 17, 2020 12:30

In today's episode, we’re going to talk through four reasons why you should have a target word count for your story. Here's a preview of what's included:[01:50] Generally speaking, a novel is defined as any story over 40,000 words. But, the average novel is usually somewhere around 80,000-100,000 words.[02:05] Technically there’s no maximum length for a novel, but there are guidelines you can follow to determine whether your story is the appropriate length, or too long. These guidelines are determined by the genre and the target age range you’re writing for so, it’s always a good idea to know what your genre is and what age range you’re writing for before you land on a target word count.[03:15] Reason #1: Having a target word count can help you make a realistic writing schedule. You can break your target word count into smaller pieces and then estimate the time it will take to finish those pieces.[05:15] Reason #2: Having a target word count can help you outline your story. You can break down your target word count into the number of words within each act, the approximate number of scenes within each act, and more.[07:05] Reason #3: Having a target word count will help you edit your work. And that's because you can use your target word count to figure out approximately how many words you'll need to cut or add. From there, you can make a more realistic plan for editing your draft.[08:15] Reason #4: Having a target word count will help you when it comes time to publish. If you're planning to traditionally publish, being within your genre's average word count could be the difference between your manuscript being read or not. If you're going the self-publishing route, you'll want to keep story length in mind so that you can budget properly and meet reader's expectations.[10:00] Key points and episode recap.Subscribe & Review in Apple PodcastsAre you subscribed to my podcast? If you have ever considered working with a coach only to have your mind flooded with reasons why you should not, you are not alone! It is natural to have these thoughts because our brains are hard-wired to protect us. We can choose to act on these beliefs – which will only hold us back – or we can acknowledge them, let them go, and take action anyway. Getting out of your own way is not easy, which is why having a coach can help tremendously. Lindsey Mango once again joins Chris, where they unpack the most common limiting beliefs that hold people back from working with a coach. We hear more about the fear of not seeing results, thinking you do not have enough money, spousal objections, and believing you are too busy. All of these beliefs are incredibly common and you should not beat yourself up for having them. It is about seeing what they can teach you about pushing yourself and the importance of investing in your most important asset – your mindset. In today’s episode, host Sarah Southwell speaks about COVID-19 and wades into waters that are so thick that they’re more like boiling tar pits. A key theme that’s raised early in our discussion, Sarah highlights the importance of trusting your intuition and making up your mind on what you should be doing about the pandemic. Accordingly, we talk about the need to have conversations with our loved ones about what makes us feel safe. Sarah also recommends that we develop a strict set of parameters for feeling safe — parameters that we should embrace so that we don’t live in a state of fear. After sharing why she has developed a distrust for the government, Sarah points to government practices that are harmful to our health. Wading even further into the tar pits, Sarah questions whether the government has our best interests at heart before exploring what they could be doing to keep us healthy. We then reflect on the mental health dangers of social isolation and what the pandemic is costing us. Near the end of the episode, Sarah emphasizes her mission to empower people. As she explains, it’s up to us to decide how we want to handle COVID-19. Tune in to hear more of Sarah’s insights into managing your health and home during the COVID-19 crisis.Key Points From This Episode:Sarah reflects on the importance of making decisions based on your intuition. Why we need to start asking ourselves tough questions about COVID-19.Finding our levels of comfort and safety when seeing people during the pandemic. Sophie is dishing out hard-to-hear relationship advice today, so buckle up. To the modern listener, her ideas might be antiquated, but wait until she argues the hell out of the popular advice we are given in progressive women’s magazines. Basically, her point is this: If he treats you like a plaything, fails to call you, does not open the car door or pull out your chair, girl, he is not that into you (or at least not in the way that you had hoped). Women want to be courted and chased (gasp!) and men should be allowed to step up to the plate and fight for them. And while Sophie is aware that her inbox might soon be flooded with messages from people accusing her of anti-feminism, she comes at it from the perspective of compassion, personal experience, and what she has seen happen with her girlfriends over and over again. Whether we like it or not, when something or someone is too accessible, we lose interest, whether it be in work, life, or dating. A man needs to see just how different you are from the other girls who chat him up and get the check on the first date – you want to show him that you value yourself and will not settle for a booty-call every second Tuesday. In this episode, Sophie and Venita also get candid about the over-sexualization of Black, especially curvy, women, explaining how they are primarily portrayed as the wild, exotic seductresses rather than the girl-next-door who the guy ends up marrying. Listeners will hear their take on sharing the details of your relationship with your girlfriends, what you can do to fix a toxic relationship (spoiler alert, nothing!), and why you might want to call up a therapist when working through a break-up. Key Points From This Episode: How the problematic portrayal of Black women in the media impact men’s perceptions. Sophie shares some of the derogatory messages she has received on dating apps. How the deep-rooted issue of oversexualizing Black women started with the slave masters. Thoughts on how the hip-hop and rap cultures might be perpetuating these narratives. What Sonic the Hedgehog reveals about society’s changing perceptions of Black women. The idea that curvy Black women are more readily subjected to over-sexualization. Venita talks about the insecurities she had because she doesn’t look like a ‘normal’ Black woman. Suggestions for how you can deal with a man who reveals his intentions to simply use you. The importance of knowing your boundaries when it comes to dating and life in general. Why it is okay to cut someone off after the first time they do something that offends you. Sophie makes a case for why – despite the modern world – men should pay for the first date. Advice about initiating texts, first-date sex, and letting a man open doors and pull out chairs. Communication: the first clue about whether a guy is into you or weighing up his options. How, when women do everything for a man, it impacts the dynamic of the relationship.Links Mentioned in Today’s Episode:Sonic the HedgehogSex and the CityHe’s Just Not That Into You Maya Angelou Venita AspenVenita Aspen on InstagramSophie GoldSophie Gold on Instagram

Tweetables: - “We have to constantly strive to make sure that people are being guided towards an optimal, not so frustrating experience. Unless we do want to frustrate them, in which case that's an entirely different design challenge. The goal is to make sure that anybody can play our games with the minimum amount of direct interference or touch on that”. — @uhfelix [0:05:07] “Games are this thing you just make up in [their] entirety. Down to the very weird, basic, physical elements, you can use all of them to influence people.” — @uhfelix [0:14:54] “Affordance is this concept of how does the design communicate its use to the user? In games, it’s very important because in the virtual world anything is possible. You want to be able to really limit the space of possibility within the player's mind, or else they'll be stuck. They’ll be at a loss as to what to do to progress, or move forward, or to accomplish goals.” — @uhfelix [0:17:57] “If you have a lot of focus on player experience, then that would lead you to integrate more player feedback into that process.” — @uhfelix [0:25:11] Links Mentioned in Today’s Episode: - Felix Park on Twitter (https://twitter.com/uhfelix) - Felix Park (http://www.felixpark.com/) - The Design of Everyday Things (https://www.amazon.com/Design-Everyday-Things-Revised-Expanded/dp/0465050654) - Enjoy the Vue on Twitter (https://twitter.com/enjoythevuecast?lang=en) - Enjoy the Vue (https://enjoythevue.io/) Special Guests: Felix Park and Ringo Kim.

They are the symptoms of you not liking yourself or not having an unconditional loving relationship with yourself. Losing 20 lbs for the sake of just losing 20 lbs isn't going to transform your life. The path to life as a professional athlete is narrow and difficult, and also one that can be easily misunderstood. Logan Gelbrich is intimately aware of this journey, having made it himself, and then veered from the original course he had projected. Logan is the Co-Founder of DEUCE, a wildly popular gym that does things a little differently. He is on the show today to talk about the roots of this project, his life on the way to becoming a baseball pro, and what led to him leaving the sport. These days Logan is a coach, an internationally-renowned speaker, and a great potential inspiration for anyone in the pursuit of their dreams. It was only after pivoting out of a career in baseball that Logan realized his true calling, which was more about pushing himself and progressing in whatever arena he found himself than about a particular sport. Through DEUCE, Logan and his team have created a training environment where everyone is treated as an athlete and is aided in raising their standards to the highest possible level. Logan explains the seeds of the 'hold the standard' idea, a philosophy that has grown into a movement that Logan has taken around the world! We also hear about Logan's book, Going Right, some of the more magical and important moments in his winding journey, and the relationships that shepherded his progress. Logan's story is a powerful example of determination and open-mindedness and how we each have our own dragons to slay and mountains to climb. We can all collectively exhale now that the 2020 presidential election results are in. For the past few weeks leading up to Joe Biden and Kamala Harris’s victory, people around the world have been watching in anticipation and we Americans have sat on the edge of our sofas, waiting to hear who the 46th President of the United States will be. Such times are exhausting and coming out of them with your sanity intact takes a great deal of resilience and inner peace. But how do you center yourself and find stillness amid such chaotic moments, when a pandemic endures and civil unrest becomes the order of the day when your social media feed is littered with hatred and fake news? In this episode, Sophie and Venita discuss how they managed to navigate the recent uncertainty, getting into both the helpful things and those that only served to deepen their existing anxieties. Because while this election is over, life is guaranteed to throw other curve balls our way and to challenge us yet again with the reality of uncertainty. Whether, like Sophie, you choose to avoid engaging in things that constantly remind you of your predicament or, like Venita, you turn on all your notifications and have your TV on 24/7 just in case you miss something, we all long for solid ground to stand on when the world feels shaky. Tuning in today, you will not only leave with advice for protecting your mental health in times of uncertainty but find pearls of wisdom about being a kinder human being and respecting everybody, regardless of who they are. Key Points From This Episode: The nail-biting experience of waiting for the final election results to be announced. Sophie shares why uncertainty is difficult and talking about it not always helpful. Suggestions for activities that keep you grounded and centered amid the chaos. The importance of spreading kindness and respect – not hatred – in times of uncertainty. Keeping in mind that everyone, regardless of their political affiliation, is a human being. Venita makes a point about the distinction between a Republican and a Trump Republican. The problem that our society no longer allows people to have open and honest dialog. Why Sophie deliberately avoided the news, social media, and political conversations. The mistake of focusing too heavily on the Trump negatives rather than the Biden positives. The need to do thorough research about the policies you and those you elect stand for. Sophie explains why local media have far more credibility than mainstream news networks. Closing thoughts on why this is the time for us to leave behind the hate and disunity for good. Before the Millions | Lifestyle Design Through Real Estate | Passive Cashflow Investing Tips and Strategies for Financial Fre

This week https://www.beforethemillions.com/episode174 (on the podcast), I interviewed a real estate investor/financial coach Todd Miller, who has spent the past 11 years building up his passive income portfolio to quit his job. His strategy was straightforward and not at all different from the plans many of us make to leave our soul sucking day job. You know... Budget, save, invest and retire early on the beach somewhere. If only it were that simple. See we can know the steps but not understand them. We can understand the steps but not implement them. We can implement them but not succeed. There are numerous areas in which we can fall short of the ever elusive financial freedom that we desire. But if you've known me for any stretch of time, you are aware that I've made it my mission to help all of us better succeed. Rather than claiming life changing results in a single episode, we wanted to help you with the baby steps for budgeting, saving and investing in hopes that these small actions will have massive results for you later down the line. This is a good one! Welcome to Asset Management Friday! Today’s episode is all about insurance, and our special guest is Daniel Garzella, President of The Garzella Group, which is an insurance brokerage that specializes in multifamily property insurance. Dan founded the Garzella Group in 2014 and, prior to starting his own firm, he was selected as one of America’s top commercial insurance agents of the year for five years in a row. This episode focuses on the processes one needs to go through to get the best insurance deal, from learning about the different devices available within multifamily and commercial insurance to learning how the requirements change as the asset increases in value. Dan covers all of this and more, sharing with us how The Garzella Group uses its knowledge and expertise to set itself apart from other insurance companies, helping to reduce your insurance costs by doing extensive market research and creating a number of different options for better value. For more on what new syndicators need to obtain a quote, and some of the things that your asset manager might not be aware of, tune in today!Key Points From This Episode:Dan introduces himself and his company, The Garzella Group. The different services within multifamily and commercial insurance.Changing insurance requirements as the value of the asset or the loan increases. The role that consulting groups play on behalf of the lender. The increase in cost per unit and the financial stability of the carrier after the $25 million mark. How knowledge and expertise set The Garzella Group apart from other insurance companies. What new syndicators need to obtain a quote and at what stage of the process they should. Some of the things an asset manager might not be aware of, including the impact that the insurance policy can have on the operating income.Dan’s asset management superpower – seeing an issue before it arises and taking care of it.Reducing insurance costs by doing market research and creating different options.Tweetables:“The insurance isn’t going to pay the loan amount just because it’s the loan amount, they’re not going to pay the market value just because it’s the market value, they’re going to pay the cost to rebuild it. We would push for the reconstruction cost and we can actually do that using the appraisal that the lender ordered in order to validate the deal to begin with.” — @garzellagpmfra [0:06:11]Links Mentioned in Today’s Episode:The Garzella Group on TwitterDaniel Garzella on LinkedInThe Garzella Group: Insurance and Financial ServicesRequest a Quote from The Garzella GroupredIQPassive Income Through Multifamily Real Estate Facebook GroupAPT Capital Group
