Human interactions can often times get messy. There are myriads of circumstances that require courts and judgements. The Fourth Order of Mishnah contains the books of law and judgement and, surprisingly, the authoritative work on ethics: Chapters of the Fathers (Pirkei Avos). This podcast will help you gain a brief overview on the Books of this Order, but never forget that this overview is barely scratching the surface. Very talented, intelligent, and diligent scholars in the yeshiva toil for years and years over a single one of these books. There is an infinite amount of wisdom in each one of these books. In this Jewish Inspiration Podcast episode (Day 122), Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe concludes the Gate of Falsehood (Sheker) from Orchos Tzaddikim and transitions toward the upcoming Gate of Truth. He explores the final categories of permissible "white lies" and strategies to avoid outright falsehood while maintaining peace or dignity:Pushing off requests without lying — If asked to lend something you don't want to give, don't say “I don't have it” (falsehood); instead, say “I'm not able to help right now” or “I'm busy.” Even small commitments (“I'll give you this”) must be honored—breaking them is covenant-like betrayal.False assurances — Promising benefit/gifts to gain trust, then reneging, incurs severe punishment (worse than vague lies).Boasting false qualities — Taking credit/praise for traits one lacks (or misusing true praise for self-glory) is theft of honor.Distorting heard facts — Even without gain/damage, altering details trains the tongue in sheker.Permitted “lies” — For peace (Aaron's method: telling quarreling parties the other regrets), praising a bride (even if not fully true), minimizing Torah knowledge, hospitality (don't publicize a gracious host to avoid exploitation), marital privacy (redirect questions), or small gifts (don't retract after promising). The rabbi stresses: falsehood distances from Hashem (Emet/truth); even “harmless” lies habituate deception. Best to divert/redirect questions rather than lie. Truth stands forever; sheker collapses. The episode ends previewing the Gate of Truth—Hashem's essence—and urging vigilance against rationalized lies.Recorded at TORCH Centre in the Levin Family Studios (B) to a live audience on July 15, 2025, in Houston, Texas.Released as Podcast on February 4, 2026_____________This series on Orchos Tzadikim/Ways of the Righteous is produced in partnership with Hachzek.Join the revolution of daily Mussar study at hachzek.com.We are using the Treasure of Life edition of the Orchos Tzadikkim (Published by Feldheim)_____________Listen, Subscribe & Share: Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/jewish-inspiration-podcast-rabbi-aryeh-wolbe/id1476610783Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/4r0KfjMzmCNQbiNaZBCSU7) to stay inspired! An outdated theme (e.g., last updated in August 2025 when we're in 2026) can cost you visibility because the algorithm may perceive your site as less maintained and current.Q3: What is Theme Liquid in Shopify?A: Theme Liquid is Shopify's templating language that allows you to customize code within the closed-source platform. It's where you would add custom elements like pop-ups, tracking codes, or other modifications that aren't available through standard theme settings.Q4: Do I need to create a sitemap for my Shopify store?A: No. Shopify automatically generates and maintains your sitemap as soon as you publish pages, products, collections, and posts. This is a major advantage over WordPress, where you need to install and configure sitemap plugins and ensure there are no conflicts.Q5: What's the difference between Google Search Console and Google Analytics?A: Google Search Console is for submitting your sitemap and monitoring how search engines crawl and index your site, while Google Analytics tracks visitor behavior and traffic sources. Both are important, but they serve different purposes. You must submit your sitemap to Search Console for proper SEO.Q6: How do I fix the Wix tag indexing problem?A: Go to your Wix dashboard, click Settings (bottom left corner), navigate to SEO Settings, find the Blog Tags section, and disable the "no index" robots.txt setting that's enabled by default. This allows your blog tags to be indexed by search engines.Q7: Why should I update my footer copyright year?A: The footer copyright year (e.g., "© 2026") is on-page text that AI and search engines scan. An outdated year (like "© 2023") signals that your site may not be actively maintained, even if you've updated content elsewhere. It's a simple but important ranking signal.Q8: How should I structure product URLs for better SEO?A: Use strategic placement of descriptive words and numbers. For example, "red-roses-12-piece" is better than "12-piece-red-roses" because users scanning search results will see "red roses" first, then the number variants (6, 12, 36), creating pattern disruption that draws attention and improves pre-purchase clicks.Q9: What is Open Graph (OG) and why does it matter?A: Open Graph tags control how your content appears when shared on social media, messaging apps, and other platforms. When you send a link via WhatsApp or iMessage and see a preview with title and image, that's Open Graph data. Properly configured OG tags ensure your content looks professional when shared.Q10: Should I choose Shopify, Squarespace, or WordPress for my business?A: Choose Shopify if you're running a product-based e-commerce store and need robust selling features. Choose Squarespace if you need a quick, aesthetically pleasing site for content, portfolios, or small-scale selling. Choose WordPress if you need maximum customization, flexibility, and control (open-source), but be prepared for more technical management.Q11: What is NAP and why is it important?A: NAP stands for Name, Address, Phone number. For websites, "address" includes your domain (www address). Consistent NAP information across your website and online directories is crucial for local SEO and helps search engines verify your business legitimacy.Q12: Can I get a free website audit from Favour?A: Yes! Favour offers surface-level website audits to help identify issues like broken links, slow pages, and basic SEO problems. The audit supports multiple platforms including Shopify, Squarespace, WordPress, Webflow, Wix, Magento, Tilda, and Duda. The arrival of Jethro, the preparation for Sinai, and the nature of the Sinai revelation - these are some of the subjects featured in our parsha. In this very special and atypically extemporaneous Parsha podcast, we offer four interesting ideas: one on the unique route that Jethro took to the truth; one on the particular form of pleasure that Torah bestows upon those who learn it; a supremely clever idea on the boundaries placed around Mount Sinai; and a fascinating observation on the splitting of the sea and the splitting of the heavens.– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –DONATE: Please consider supporting the podcasts by making a donation to help fund our Jewish outreach and educational efforts at https://www.torchweb.org/support.php. In this Jewish Inspiration Podcast episode (Day 121), Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe concludes the Gate of Falsehood (Sheker) from Orchos Tzaddikim, detailing the final categories of liars and emphasizing the Torah's command to distance oneself from all falsehood ("midvar sheker tirchak").The rabbi reviews the nine types of falsehood:Obvious lies, subtle forgeries, sophisticated rationalizations."White lies" (inconsequential exaggerations) that curry favor or lower guards.Lies to steal potential benefit (e.g., poaching clients).Distorting heard facts for no gain/damage.False promises/assurances (e.g., "I'll give you this" without intent).Leading someone to trust falsely, then breaking it (breaking a covenant-like bond).Taking praise for unpossessed qualities (even true praise can be misused).Lies about what was heard, changing facts to suit needs.Key lessons: Falsehood distances one from Hashem (Emet/truth); even "harmless" lies train the tongue for worse deception. Rav's story warns against teaching children to reverse words—even for "good" reasons—as it habituates falsehood. Punishment varies by severity, but all lies harm soul and others. The chapter ends urging vigilance: purge traits that rationalize lies to attain pure truth.Recorded at TORCH Centre in the Levin Family Studios (B) to a live audience on July 15, 2025, in Houston, Texas.Released as Podcast on February 3, 2026_____________This series on Orchos Tzadikim/Ways of the Righteous is produced in partnership with Hachzek.Join the revolution of daily Mussar study at hachzek.com.We are using the Treasure of Life edition of the Orchos Tzadikkim (Published by Feldheim)_____________Listen, Subscribe & Share: Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/jewish-inspiration-podcast-rabbi-aryeh-wolbe/id1476610783Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/4r0KfjMzmCNQbiNaZBCSU7) to stay inspired! Which platform is better for a beginner with no coding experience?Webflow is generally considered more beginner-friendly due to its visual editor and managed hosting, which simplifies the setup and maintenance process. WordPress, while powerful, has a steeper learning curve and requires more hands-on management of hosting, plugins, and security.2. Can I achieve good SEO results on both WordPress and Webflow?Yes, both platforms offer robust tools to implement a strong SEO strategy. The key to success is not the platform itself, but the consistent application of SEO best practices, such as creating high-quality content, building quality backlinks, and optimizing for relevant keywords.3. How important are plugins for a WordPress site?Plugins are essential for extending the functionality of a WordPress site. They can add features for SEO, e-commerce, security, and more. However, it is crucial to use well-coded plugins from reputable sources, as an excessive number of plugins or poorly-coded ones can slow down your website and create security vulnerabilities.4. What are the main cost differences between WordPress and Webflow?Webflow operates on a subscription model with different pricing tiers based on features and traffic. WordPress is open-source and free to use, but you will incur costs for hosting, domain registration, premium themes, and plugins. The total cost for a WordPress site can vary widely depending on your specific needs.5. What was the key takeaway from Ryan's experience with the Google update? The main lesson from Ryan's story is that SEO is an ongoing process. Relying on past success without continuous effort in link building, content creation, and technical updates can leave a website vulnerable to algorithm changes. It highlights the importance of staying proactive and adaptable in your SEO strategy.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
Mistakes are endemic to the human condition. All humans make mistakes. Even the titans of our history like Moshe, Aaron, and Joshua made mistakes. Only God is error-free. In this interesting - and maybe a tad controversial - podcast, we take a look at the unusual path of ascent of Moshe's successor, Joshua. Joshua was not a flawless wunderkind who could do no wrong. In fact, in each one of the narratives surrounding Joshua in the Torah, we can find some sort of misstep that Joshua did. Evidently, Joshua's path to ascent relied on those missteps, and his story shows us a different way to achieve transcendental greatness. – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –DONATE: Please consider supporting the podcasts by making a donation to help fund our Jewish outreach and educational efforts at https://www.torchweb.org/support.php. In this Jewish Inspiration Podcast episode (Day 120), Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe continues the Gate of Falsehood (Sheker) from Orchos Tzaddikim, exploring the second type of lie: the "white lie" or seemingly harmless falsehood (e.g., exaggeration for story enhancement, inconsequential fibs). Even when no one is hurt and no gain is sought, such lies are forbidden—because they stem from a desire to curry favor, build trust falsely, lower someone's guard, or gain advantage through deception. The rabbi cites King Solomon: a lying tongue is an abomination to kings—true leaders despise falsehood. The wise person weighs every statement carefully, rejecting even "small" lies that distort reality or make falsehood appear true. Sophisticated rationalizations often justify lies, but purging bad traits (arrogance, laziness, etc.) allows pure truth to emerge. The chapter stresses: falsehood distances one from Hashem (who is Emet/truth), harms others indirectly (steals dignity, causes pain/discord), and collapses over time (sheker has one leg; emet stands on two). The episode ends with a preview of the next types of falsehood (e.g., denying deposits, false testimony) and their double punishment.Recorded at TORCH Centre in the Levin Family Studios (B) to a live audience on July 8, 2025, in Houston, Texas.Released as Podcast on February 2, 2026_____________This series on Orchos Tzadikim/Ways of the Righteous is produced in partnership with Hachzek.Join the revolution of daily Mussar study at hachzek.com.We are using the Treasure of Life edition of the Orchos Tzadikkim (Published by Feldheim)_____________Listen, Subscribe & Share: Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/jewish-inspiration-podcast-rabbi-aryeh-wolbe/id1476610783Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/4r0KfjMzmCNQbiNaZBCSU7) to stay inspired! The most significant event in all of human history is the Revelation at Sinai, which occurs in Parshas Yisro. In this Jewish Inspiration Podcast episode (Day 119), Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe begins the Gate of Falsehood (Sheker) from Orchos Tzaddikim, emphasizing the Torah's command: "Distance yourself from falsehood" (midvar sheker tirchak). Falsehood is weighed like gold and silver—requiring careful discernment between truth and lies. The rabbi outlines types of falsehood: obvious lies (e.g., calling a tree gold), subtle forgeries (copper made to look like gold), and sophisticated rationalizations that make lies appear true. Wise people distinguish truth from falsehood in their hearts, rejecting self-serving justifications driven by negative traits (arrogance, laziness, anger, love/hate).The chapter warns that falsehood distances one from Hashem (who is truth: "Hashem Elokeinu Emet") and harms others (e.g., false testimony, slander causing pain or discord). Even when no personal gain exists, lying reflects "crookedness of heart." The rabbi stresses purging bad traits to attain pure truth—rationalizations often justify evil behavior. The episode concludes with the first category of liars (denying deposits, false testimony) and their double punishment: separation from Hashem and damage to others. Next time: deeper categories of falsehood.Recorded at TORCH Centre in the Levin Family Studios (B) to a live audience on July 8, 2025, in Houston, Texas.Released as Podcast on February 1, 2026_____________This series on Orchos Tzadikim/Ways of the Righteous is produced in partnership with Hachzek.Join the revolution of daily Mussar study at hachzek.com.We are using the Treasure of Life edition of the Orchos Tzadikkim (Published by Feldheim)_____________Listen, Subscribe & Share: Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/jewish-inspiration-podcast-rabbi-aryeh-wolbe/id1476610783Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/4r0KfjMzmCNQbiNaZBCSU7) to stay inspired! The nation emerged from Egypt triumphantly. Pharaoh was talking a big game. "Who is God that I should listen to him? I'm not going to release the Israelites!" But he was humbled before God one plague at a time. With the death of the firstborn at the stroke of midnight, Pharaoh buckled. He begged, he coaxed, he urged, he pleaded with the Israelites to leave. The coast is now clear. The enemies are behind us. Certainly, the entire nation expected smooth sailing. But Egypt reared its ugly head once again. The entire Parsha is a series of challenges that arose in the aftermath of the Exodus. Twice the nation was stranded without water, their food supply ran out as well, and they were attacked and ambushed by the nation of Amaleik. In this very special Parsha Podcast, we go backstage and learn several profound lessons about the nature and mechanism of transformative change, the process by which bitter is rendered sweet, and the unique and counterintuitive way that we can have cosmic influence.– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –This Parsha Podcast is dedicated in loving memory and leilui nishmas Baruch Yochanan Ben Reb Ephraim Fischel, Dr. Bertram John Newman, dedicated by the Newman, Shapiro, Grossman, and Yudelson families. In this Ask Away #28 episode of Everyday Judaism, Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe answers live and emailed questions on practical halacha and deeper Jewish life:Netilat yadayim technique — One continuous flow is ideal; your wrist-to-fingers method is fine if uninterrupted.Running water / faucets — Requires human force (koach gavra); turn faucet on/off repeatedly so first spurt washes each hand.Morning blessings order — Body needs first (restroom), then wash hands + Al Netilat Yadayim, Asher Yatzar, Elokai Neshama (attach them); Modeh Ani immediately upon waking.Aliyah in current times — Massive wave of aliyah is real and prophetic; if livelihood transfers easily, move (great mitzvah—every moment/step in Eretz Yisrael is a mitzvah); if not, stay and be intentional (e.g., spread Torah, as Rabbi does in Houston). Cultural/language barriers for children over 6 are real; prepare spiritually (Torah growth, closeness to Hashem) for Moshiach—have a "go bag" ready.Tattoos & henna — Tattoos forbidden biblically; henna generally permitted (ask rabbi); neither blocks hand-washing unless substantial chatzitzah.Infidelity & King Solomon — Torah forbids casual intimacy outside marriage; Solomon's 1,000 wives/concubines is a cautionary tale—he later warns against it. Rabbinic decree limits men to one wife at a time. Modern promiscuity/infidelity rises with internet; use filters/accountability, delete temptations, prioritize emotional depth via niddah laws.Shabbat automatic toilets — Triggering sensors is problematic (creative labor); if unavoidable, some poskim permit as gram/indirect; best avoid or use manual options.Finding a rabbi — Pursue actively (run after them); persistence (e.g., persistent voicemails) works; rabbi guides halacha/life; don't wait for one to chase you.The rabbi shares personal stories (mikvah healing soul-leaving sensation, persistent rabbi outreach) and stresses intentional Judaism, community, and using modern tools for good while guarding against harm. Please submit your questions at askaway@torchweb.org_____________The Everyday Judaism Podcast is dedicated to learning, understanding and appreciating the greatness of Jewish heritage and the Torah through the simplified, concise study of Halacha, Jewish Law, thereby enhancing our understanding of how Hashem wants us to live our daily lives in a Jewish way._____________This Podcast Series is Generously Underwritten by Marshall & Doreen LernerDownload & Print the Everyday Judaism Halacha Notes:https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1RL-PideM42B_LFn6pbrk8MMU5-zqlLG5This episode (Ep. #82) of the Everyday Judaism Podcast by Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe of TORCH is dedicated to my dearest friends, Marshall & Doreen Lerner! In this Prayer Podcast episode (Part 2 of Baruch She'amar), Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe continues his deep dive into the opening blessing of Pesukei Dezimra. He explains the prayer's two parts: the introductory praises (10 praises corresponding to creation's 10 utterances and the 10 Commandments) and the actual blessing. Drawing from the Rokach and other commentaries, the rabbi reveals profound secrets:Baruch She'amar V'haya Ha'olam — Hashem spoke the world into existence (yesh me'ayin); everything was created in one utterance, then revealed gradually over time.Baruch Hu — The world exists to glorify Hashem's Name.Baruch Oseh Bereishis — Hashem renews creation every single day (present tense verbs emphasize ongoing miracles).Baruch Omer V'oseh — What Hashem decrees immediately happens.Baruch Gozer Umekayem — Decrees (even difficult ones) are fulfilled, yet Hashem sustains us through them.Baruch Merachem Al Ha'aretz / Al Ha'briyot — Hashem shows compassion on the earth and every creature.Baruch Meshaleim Sochar Tov Li're'av — Hashem rewards the righteous eternally (in the World to Come), while the wicked get their reward in this world.Baruch Chai La'ad V'kayam Lanetzach — Hashem was, is, and will be forever (YKVK = past, present, future).Baruch Podeh U'matzil — Hashem redeems and rescues from every challenge.Baruch Shemo — Blessed is His Name, despite being hidden. The rabbi connects this to the parsha (Va'era), where Hashem reveals Himself as the Redeemer ("Ani Hashem") and performs miracles to prove His sovereignty. He stresses living with awe: see daily miracles (body, nature, modern survivals in Israel) as ongoing creation and love from Hashem—never let them become routine._____________This Podcast Series is Generously Underwritten by Dr. Leonard & June GoldbergDownload the Prayer Podcast Worksheets:https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1iBVevW1ydyjSeyeO0iCcina7e8vix3Lt?usp=sharingThis episode (Ep. #45) of the Prayer Podcast by Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe of TORCH is dedicated to my dearest friends, Dr. Leonard & June Goldberg! Abraham just defeated four kings. He refused their wealth. He should feel victorious. Instead, he's terrified. G-d appears to him in a vision and says: "Fear not, Abraham. I am a shield for you. Your reward is very great." But Abraham isn't comforted. What good is any reward if he has no child to pass it to? Everything will go to Eliezer, his servant from Damascus.G-d takes him outside. "Look at the heavens and count the stars, if you can." The simple reading: Abraham looks up at the night sky. But the Hebrew reveals something else. The word used means looking down, not up. G-d takes Abraham above the stars and shows him from there. Because according to Abraham's astrological sign, he and Sarah will never have children. So G-d takes him outside his mazal, outside the natural order. Abram won't have a son, but Abraham will. The Jewish people exist outside the framework of the world, a thread that shouldn't be there but is.Abraham trusts. The Hebrew word is "והאמין," which doesn't mean belief the way we think. It means locked in, steadfast, unwavering. No matter what questions come, Abraham is locked into G-d. Then Abraham asks one question: "How will I know that I will inherit the land?" What have I done to deserve this? Or maybe: how do I make sure I don't mess it up? This episode explores what it means to be taken outside your limitations, and why trust is greater than belief.
The Exodus is finally here. After 210 years in Egypt - enslaved, tormented, and oppressed - the nation is leaving with great pomp and ceremony. There is an apparently curious factoid about the Exodus: in the third verse of our Parsha, the Torah tells us that Moshe secured the bones of Joseph, and transported them with the nation. What is the significance of the bones of Joseph? Why was it so important to bring these bones of Joseph with the people? In this Parsha podcast we go deep and deeper on the fascinating subplot of the bones of Joseph.– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –DONATE: Please consider supporting the podcasts by making a donation to help fund our Jewish outreach and educational efforts at https://www.torchweb.org/support.php. Free synth plugins can feel overwhelming, especially when you're staring at an empty patch and just want results. In this episode of Inside The Mix, Marc Matthews walks beginner and intermediate producers through a practical Surge XT tutorial, showing how to design mix-ready high strings from an init patch using this powerful free synth plugin.Surge XT is a free, open-source synthesizer packed with features, but more options don't always mean better results. Marc focuses on what actually matters in a real track: speed, tone, and fit in the mix. Starting with a quick interface overview, he explains how small workflow tweaks, like using Surge XT's Dark skin, can improve focus before sound design even begins. From there, the episode breaks down a simple, repeatable system: building the core tone with two saw oscillators, controlled unison width, and careful detuning to avoid phase issues. Marc explains envelope shaping in plain language, why octave placement matters for strings, and how gentle filtering prevents harshness without killing brightness. The final section covers effects that solve problems at the source. You'll hear how light chorus and plate reverb help strings sit in a dense house mix—often reducing the need to fight levels later. Along the way, Marc shares a clear framework for evaluating any free synthesizer: how fast it gets you to a usable sound, how intuitive the controls are, and whether the result works in context. If you're looking for a free synth plugin that earns its place in your workflow, this episode shows how to test Surge XT properly, inside a real project with real constraints.TL:DR: Marc designs high strings from scratch in Surge XT, showing how to judge a free synth plugin by speed, clarity, and real mix results—not presets.Links mentioned in this episode:Surge XTSend me a message Support the showWays to connect with Marc: Book your FREE Music Breakthrough Strategy Call Radio-ready mixes start here - get the FREE weekly tips Follow Marc's Socials: Instagram | YouTube | Synth Music Mastering Thanks for listening!! The Exodus was for keeps. Although Pharaoh regretted his decision to allow the Israelites to leave and chased them down, setting up a stand-off at the Sea of Reeds, once the sea split for the Israelites and crashed down upon the Egyptians, the Israelites were forever freed from the clutches of Egyptian bondage. Following that day, the Israelites will never see the Egyptians again. Our people are thrice warned to never return back to Egypt. There's nothing left for us there. The split was permanent. We're gone forever. But this wasn't always the plan. When Moshe initially pitched Pharaoh to release the Israelites, he sought a temporary reprieve. "Let us travel three days into the wilderness and have a festival of sacrifices for God. Moshe implied that the nation would return following the festival. This is repeated multiple times in the narrative, as the Plague escalated and Pharaoh was pliable to negotiate: First, he offered to host the festival in Egypt. That was untenable because the Israelites intended to sacrifice sheep, the deities of Egypt. Then, Pharaoh agreed to allow the adults to go, provided that the children of the animals stay behind as collateral. Finally, Pharaoh relented to allow the adults and the children to participate in this festival, if the nation agreed to leave the animals behind. When the nation left and three days elapsed and the nation failed to signal a return back to Egypt, Pharaoh pursued them. What is the nature of this counterfactual three-day festival? Was it a legitimate proposal or a deceptive ruse? In this very fascinating podcast, we share three different approaches. What you will learn can provide a very useful tactic in your path of ascent.– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –DONATE: Please consider supporting the podcasts by making a donation to help fund our Jewish outreach and educational efforts at https://www.torchweb.org/support.php. In this Parshas Bo review, Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe explores the final three plagues (locusts, darkness, death of the firstborn) and the dramatic prelude to the Exodus. The core message centers on chen (favor/grace): despite centuries of enslavement and hatred, the Jewish people suddenly found favor in Egyptian eyes ("Vayiten Hashem et chen ha'am be'einei Mitzrayim"), leading them to freely give gold, silver, and valuables as they left. The rabbi explains this reversal was not due to assimilation or currying favor—quite the opposite. The Jews remained distinct: they did not change their names, language, or clothing (lo shin'u et shemam, et leshonam, et malbusham). Their steadfast commitment to identity and Hashem earned divine favor, turning enemies into benefactors overnight. Assimilation backfires; authentic pride in Judaism draws chen from Hashem, which then reflects in the eyes of others. The episode ties this to modern life: don't hide Judaism (yarmulke, tzitzit, tefillin) out of fear—wear it proudly as a badge of honor. True Jewish pride comes from living mitzvot openly, not blending in. The rabbi shares personal stories (putting on tefillin publicly in airports, inspiring others) and urges embracing Jewish identity without shame, as Hashem controls the "favorability knob."_____________This episode of the Parsha Review Podcast is dedicated in honor of Lenny & Teresa FriedmanDownload & Print the Parsha Review Notes:https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1ncaRyoH5iJmGGoMZs9y82Hz2ofViVouv?usp=sharingRecorded at TORCH Meyerland in the Levin Family Studios (B) to a live audience on January 25, 2026, in Houston, Texas.Released as Podcast on January 26, 2026_____________Subscribe: Apple Podcasts (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/parsha-review-podcast-rabbi-aryeh-wolbe/id1651930083)Spotify (https://open.spotify.com/show/22lv1kXJob5ZNLaAl6CHTQ) to stay inspired! In this Everyday Judaism episode (continuing Kitzur Shulchan Aruch, Siman 40), Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe completes the laws of netilat yadayim (ritual hand-washing before bread/meals). Key halachot include:Invalid waters: Salty, putrid, bitter, or muddy water is disqualified if unfit even for a dog to drink.Clean hands requirement: Hands must be free of interpositions (chatzitzah)—remove rings, clean under long nails, scrape off substantial dirt/paint; incidental coloring (e.g., ink stains) is not a chatzitzah, but substantial matter (paint, grease) is.For certain occupations (painters, dyers, butchers, scribes): Minor staining from their work is not a chatzitzah unless it covers most of the hand.Dressings/wounds: Band-aids or painful-to-remove coverings are not chatzitzah (same rule applies to mikvah immersion).Dipping foods: Wash hands (no blessing) before eating anything commonly dipped in liquid or still moist from liquid; seven liquids qualify (wine, honey, olive oil, milk/whey, blood [medicinal only], water); fruit juices or liquors generally do not.Preserves & butters: Hardened sugar/honey coatings are not liquid (no washing needed); soft/moist ones are.Hand foods vs. utensil foods: Dip hand-eaten foods require washing; spoon/fork foods do not if no hand contact.Practical notes: Soap is not required; focus on water coverage and one continuous flow. The rabbi stresses spiritual depth: washing humbles us before bread (countering "my power made this wealth") and prepares us for holiness. The episode transitions to Ask Away #28, inviting questions on intentional Judaism. The episode concludes with a transition to the Ask Away #28._____________The Everyday Judaism Podcast is dedicated to learning, understanding and appreciating the greatness of Jewish heritage and the Torah through the simplified, concise study of Halacha, Jewish Law, thereby enhancing our understanding of how Hashem wants us to live our daily lives in a Jewish way._____________This Podcast Series is Generously Underwritten by Marshall & Doreen LernerDownload & Print the Everyday Judaism Halacha Notes:https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1RL-PideM42B_LFn6pbrk8MMU5-zqlLG5This episode (Ep. #83) of the Everyday Judaism Podcast by Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe of TORCH is dedicated to my dearest friends, Marshall & Doreen Lerner! Parshas Beshalach may be the most action-packed parsha in the Torah. After the Exodus, God directed the people to not take the shortest route to the Land in order to facilitate the great miracle of the Splitting of the Sea and the final destruction of the Egyptians. After those unprecedented miracles, the trouble began: Twice they ran out of water, they ran out of food, and a ferocious enemy launched an unprovoked attack. – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –DONATE: Please consider supporting the podcasts by making a donation to help fund our Jewish outreach and educational efforts at https://www.torchweb.org/support.php. What makes something truly *intelligent?* Is a rock an agent? Could a perfect simulation of your brain actually *be* you? In this fascinating conversation, Dr. Jeff Beck takes us on a journey through the philosophical and technical foundations of agency, intelligence, and the future of AI.Jeff doesn't hold back on the big questions. He argues that from a purely mathematical perspective, there's no structural difference between an agent and a rock – both execute policies that map inputs to outputs. The real distinction lies in *sophistication* – how complex are the internal computations? Does the system engage in planning and counterfactual reasoning, or is it just a lookup table that happens to give the right answers?*Key topics explored in this conversation:**The Black Box Problem of Agency* – How can we tell if something is truly planning versus just executing a pre-computed response? Jeff explains why this question is nearly impossible to answer from the outside, and why the best we can do is ask which model gives us the simplest explanation.*Energy-Based Models Explained* – A masterclass on how EBMs differ from standard neural networks. The key insight: traditional networks only optimize weights, while energy-based models optimize *both* weights and internal states – a subtle but profound distinction that connects to Bayesian inference.*Why Your Brain Might Have Evolved from Your Nose* – One of the most surprising moments in the conversation. Jeff proposes that the complex, non-smooth nature of olfactory space may have driven the evolution of our associative cortex and planning abilities.*The JEPA Revolution* – A deep dive into Yann LeCun's Joint Embedding Prediction Architecture and why learning in latent space (rather than predicting every pixel) might be the key to more robust AI representations.*AI Safety Without Skynet Fears* – Jeff takes a refreshingly grounded stance on AI risk. He's less worried about rogue superintelligences and more concerned about humans becoming "reward function selectors" – couch potatoes who just approve or reject AI outputs. His proposed solution? Use inverse reinforcement learning to derive AI goals from observed human behavior, then make *small* perturbations rather than naive commands like "end world hunger."Whether you're interested in the philosophy of mind, the technical details of modern machine learning, or just want to understand what makes intelligence *tick,* this conversation delivers insights you won't find anywhere else.---TIMESTAMPS:00:00:00 Geometric Deep Learning & Physical Symmetries00:00:56 Defining Agency: From Rocks to Planning00:05:25 The Black Box Problem & Counterfactuals00:08:45 Simulated Agency vs. Physical Reality00:12:55 Energy-Based Models & Test-Time Training00:17:30 Bayesian Inference & Free Energy00:20:07 JEPA, Latent Space, & Non-Contrastive Learning00:27:07 Evolution of Intelligence & Modular Brains00:34:00 Scientific Discovery & Automated Experimentation00:38:04 AI Safety, Enfeeblement & The Future of Work---REFERENCES:Concept:[00:00:58] Free Energy Principle (FEP)https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Free_energy_principle[00:06:00] Monte Carlo Tree Searchhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monte_Carlo_tree_searchBook:[00:09:00] The Intentional Stancehttps://mitpress.mit.edu/9780262540537/the-intentional-stance/Paper:[00:13:00] A Tutorial on Energy-Based Learning (LeCun 2006)http://yann.lecun.com/exdb/publis/pdf/lecun-06.pdf[00:15:00] Auto-Encoding Variational Bayes (VAE)https://arxiv.org/abs/1312.6114[00:20:15] JEPA (Joint Embedding Prediction Architecture)https://openreview.net/forum?id=BZ5a1r-kVsf[00:22:30] The Wake-Sleep Algorithmhttps://www.cs.toronto.edu/~hinton/absps/ws.pdf---RESCRIPT:https://app.rescript.info/public/share/DJlSbJ_Qx080q315tWaqMWn3PixCQsOcM4Kf1IW9_EoPDF:https://app.rescript.info/api/public/sessions/0efec296b9b6e905/pdf
In this Thinking Talmudist episode on Gittin 57a, Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe concludes the tragic stories of Kfar Sekania's destruction and delves into the Roman massacre of Betar (Beitar), using it to illustrate the dangers of reckless reaction and the power of lashon hara (slander) in causing national catastrophe. The Gemara recounts how Betar's custom of planting cedar trees for boys and pine for girls—later used for wedding canopies—led to disaster: when Caesar's daughter's carriage broke, her attendants cut down a local cedar, prompting Jews to attack them in outrage. This sparked Roman retaliation, resulting in the slaughter of millions (80,000 division leaders entering, blood flowing to the sea, streets running red). The destruction stemmed from overreaction to a perceived personal affront (the tree symbolizing a child's future), mirroring how lashon hara about Eretz Yisrael by the spies doomed a generation. The rabbi emphasizes intentional Jewish living over myths (e.g., tattoos or lashon hara barring burial), urging daily teshuva and vibrancy in mitzvot. He shares powerful personal reflections on family purity laws (niddah): physical separation (no touching, separate beds) creates 12 annual honeymoons, nurturing emotional depth and preventing relationships from becoming stale or objectified—preserving long-term love and holiness. The episode closes with a call to invest in authentic Judaism now, not just "die Jewish," and to recognize that all is in Hashem's hand._____________The Thinking Talmudist Podcast shares select teachings of Talmud in a fresh, insightful and meaningful way. Many claim that they cannot learn Talmud because it is in ancient Aramaic or the concepts are too difficult. Well, no more excuses. With the final three plagues striking Egypt,, our Nation's centuries-long nightmare in Egypt mercifully came to an end. At the stroke of midnight, all the firstborn of Egypt—both human and animal—died. The cry that erupted from this plague was unprecedented. Never before and never since has such a cry been experienced. With the Egyptian cry, Pharaoh finally cried uncle. His total and unconditional surrender before God was complete. But let's backtrack a bit. Why was the nation condemned to be enslaved in Egypt for multiple centuries to begin with? Why was Abraham told that his descendants will be foreigners in a foreign land even before Abraham bore any descendants? In this very special edition of the Parsha Podcast, we go backstage and discover some fascinating secrets regarding the enslavement of the Israelites and the dramatic, wondrous, miraculous redemption of the Exodus. – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –DONATE: Please consider supporting the podcasts by making a donation to help fund our Jewish outreach and educational efforts at https://www.torchweb.org/support.php. In this episode, Rabbi Michael Cohen and I explore a radical idea from Rav Dessler that reframes how we think about success, reward, and mitzvah observance. This world is not where mitzvot are paid back. It is where we are provisioned. What looks like reward is often just operating capital providing the resources necessary to fulfill our mission. We examine how imagination and experiential learning turn Torah from something we merely understand into something we actually live. The Exodus was not one-and-done. It remains an ever-present, indispensable part of our religion. We are commanded to recall the Exodus every single day. There are many festivals and days of note dedicated to remembering and reliving the Exodus. There are many mitzvos that orient around the exodus. The prominent centrality of the Exodus needs an explanation. Why would the event of our nation's freedom from bondage more than 3330 years ago play such a prominent role for all time? In a seminal essay that addresses many foundational elements of our religion, Ramban (Nachmanides) addresses this question. This essay is his most famous comment in his entire magisterial commentary on the Torah. My grandfather, blessed memory, used to say that every single Jew must study this comment in Ramban until they can recite it by heart. In this very interesting podcast, we read this essay and discover and ponder its gems.– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –DONATE: Please consider supporting the podcasts by making a donation to help fund our Jewish outreach and educational efforts at https://www.torchweb.org/support.php. In this Ask Away #27 episode of the Everyday Judaism podcast, Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe fields live and emailed questions on practical halacha, with emphasis on thoughtful, intentional Jewish living.Key topics include:Netilat Yadayim (hand-washing): Proper technique (one continuous flow of water, ideally covering the entire hand to the wrist), alternatives when no vessel is available (faucet with human force by turning on/off), and the spiritual significance (removing arrogance before eating bread).Temple-related immersions: Today, men have no biblical obligation for mikvah (unlike women after niddah); these laws will fully apply again with the future Temple.Scam suspicion on online forums: Use common sense—don't give to unknown causes (especially overseas); prioritize local tzedakah; report suspected scams; avoid reckless generosity that risks financial harm.Finding a rabbi/mentor: Actively pursue a teacher (run after them); persistence is key (e.g., leave persistent voicemails); a rabbi provides personalized guidance in halacha, life, and growth—don't wait for one to chase you.Order of morning blessings: Follow body needs first (restroom), then wash hands, recite Al Netilat Yadayim, Asher Yatzar, then Elokai Neshama (attach them); Modeh Ani comes immediately upon waking. The rabbi shares inspiring stories (e.g., a woman's soul-leaving experience resolved by mikvah) and stresses daily growth, community, and avoiding superstition while embracing practical mitzvot. In this special Everyday Judaism episode timed for the start of Chanukah, Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe explores the significance and halachot of Rosh Chodesh (the new month), which coincides with Hallel recitation beginning the next morning. Rosh Chodesh is an auspicious time for atonement—Erev Rosh Chodesh is treated by some as Yom Kippur Katan (minor Day of Atonement) with fasting and special supplications—mirroring the monthly sin-offering in Temple times.Key practices include eating a festive meal (even adding a unique dish on Shabbos-Rosh Chodesh), women customarily refraining from work (in merit of not donating jewelry for the Golden Calf), reciting Yaaleh V'Yavo in Amidah, partial ("Chatzi") Hallel standing (as testimony to Hashem's miracles), Torah reading with four aliyot, and full Kaddish Titkabbal. Hallel is ideally with a minyan, uninterrupted, and standing; interruptions from Pesukei D'Zimra are permitted for Chatzi Hallel on Rosh Chodesh. The episode culminates in detailed laws of Kiddush Levanah (sanctifying the new moon outdoors at night, ideally Motzei Shabbos in fine attire and joy, with a minyan)—a protective mitzvah recited only when the moon's light is visible and beneficial, from after three days post-molad until the midpoint of the lunar month. Priorities favor frequent mitzvot (e.g., Ma'ariv before Kiddush Levanah unless time is pressing), with flexibility for weather or need. The class emphasizes Rosh Chodesh's role in renewal, gratitude, and connecting to Hashem's lunar cycle. The episode concludes with a transition to the Ask Away #26._____________The Everyday Judaism Podcast is dedicated to learning, understanding and appreciating the greatness of Jewish heritage and the Torah through the simplified, concise study of Halacha, Jewish Law, thereby enhancing our understanding of how Hashem wants us to live our daily lives in a Jewish way._____________This Podcast Series is Generously Underwritten by Marshall & Doreen LernerDownload & Print the Everyday Judaism Halacha Notes:https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1RL-PideM42B_LFn6pbrk8MMU5-zqlLG5This episode (Ep. #80) of the Everyday Judaism Podcast by Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe of TORCH is dedicated to my dearest friends, Marshall & Doreen Lerner! After the first seven Plagues of Egypt related in last week's parsha, Pharaoh and his people were still unwilling to release the Children of Israel. In Parshas Bo, the miracles and wonders of the Almighty intensified, culminating in the Death of the Firstborn and the Exodus from Egypt.– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –DONATE: Please consider supporting the podcasts by making a donation to help fund our Jewish outreach and educational efforts at https://www.torchweb.org/support.php. Pharaoh is one tough nut to crack. Notwithstanding all the miracles, signs, and wonders that the Almighty displays in Egypt, Pharaoh persists in his stubborn, immovable, intransigence. God promised to harden his heart and thereby prolong the period of the Plagues, but Pharaoh himself hardened his own heart. But something dramatic happened to Pharaoh. He slowly and steadily became a believer. He slowly and steadily accepted the dominion of God. He slowly and steadily began to live as a believer, began to interface with the world as someone cognizant and aware of God's dominion, omniscience, and omnipotence. The Torah centers the storyline of the Exodus on the transformation of Pharaoh. For us, the lessons are quite profound. – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –This Parsha podcast is dedicated by Paul and Carol Block in loving memory and leilui nishmas their parents – Paul's father, Harav Moshe Yosef ben Harav Avraham Chaim, whose yahrzeit is 22 Teves, and Carol's mother, Charna Leah bas Reb Moshe, whose yahrzeit is 24 Teves. In this concluding Mussar Masterclass (Day 118) on Orchos Tzaddikim's Gate of Silence, Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe explores the remaining three (of five) destructive forms of mockery (leitzanut) that block the Divine Presence:Mocking beneficial deeds/activities without intent to shame—arrogantly rejecting what one doesn't personally value, leading to scorning mitzvot and eventual heresy; mockers reject rebuke and have "no hope."Habitual idle mockery (e.g., "corner dwellers" seeking laughs)—wastes time, increases sin, neglects Torah study, and incurs double loss (committing evil while missing good).Jesting mockery for entertainment (e.g., late-night shows)—lightens serious matters, leads to excessive drinking, weakens mitzvah observance in oneself and others, and desensitizes to holiness.Mockery ultimately backfires measure-for-measure ("do not mock lest your affliction worsen"), discourages mitzvot, and can lead to heresy—except when mocking grave sins like idolatry to deter others. The rabbi warns against habitual joking that erodes inspiration and clarity, urging silence to preserve reverence. The Gate of Silence concludes; next week begins the Gate of Falsehood.Recorded at TORCH Centre in the Levin Family Studios (B) to a live audience on July 1, 2025, in Houston, Texas.Released as Podcast on January 15, 2026_____________This series on Orchos Tzadikim/Ways of the Righteous is produced in partnership with Hachzek.Join the revolution of daily Mussar study at hachzek.com.We are using the Treasure of Life edition of the Orchos Tzadikkim (Published by Feldheim)_____________Listen, Subscribe & Share: Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/jewish-inspiration-podcast-rabbi-aryeh-wolbe/id1476610783Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/4r0KfjMzmCNQbiNaZBCSU7) to stay inspired!
