To combat this year's hikes, Switcher.ie has put together some inflation-busting, money-saving tips, and our expert, Eoin Clarke, comments on how to futureproof against annual price rises. 1. Bundle your broadband, TV & mobile Combine your broadband, TV and mobile services into a single package to reduce your monthly expenses. Many Irish households rely on streaming services like Sky Stream and Netflix for sports and entertainment. Bundling broadband & TV, and adding your mobile SIM-only plan can lead to significant savings compared to individual plans. 2. Shop around to find the best deals Plan ahead and start your broadband bargain hunt before your contract ends. Use comparison websites with an eircode checker to quickly find the cheapest options in your location. Ensure you factor in the price after the promotional period, as well as crucial features such as speed, contract duration, and any rewards or perks. 3. Haggle for a better deal Tell your provider you're thinking of leaving before jumping, and they may just pull out all the stops to keep you. Use comparison sites to find cheaper options and ask for a price match. You might get a lower price, but it's not guaranteed. 4. Keep it SIMple Save money with a SIM-only deal. If your phone contract is up and you're still happy with your phone, switch to SIM-only. Unlike bill-pay contracts, which include the cost of a new device, SIM-only deals just charge for calls, texts, and data, offering huge savings and flexible, shorter contracts. 5. Grab a multi-cover discount Use a multi-gadget cover to save money on gadget insurance. If you've got a bunch of gadgets, like an iPhone, tablet, laptop, and smartwatch, combine cover for up to 15% off. Only insure new gadgets and check your home insurance first to avoid doubling up. Eoin Clarke, Telecoms Expert at Switcher.ie comments: "While energy and food prices have stabilised, households will face a wave of price hikes on April Fools Day. Once again, some telecom giants are pushing up prices over the rate of inflation, with some SIM-only contracts surging by over 10%. The good news is that it's a buyer's market for broadband and mobile users right now. Providers are fighting for new customers, leading to some healthy discounts and great perks. Our advice is to make the most of this clamour by switching providers when your contract ends. The best deals are always on offer to newcomers, so take advantage of any introductory discounts, welcome rewards or freebies. The cheapest deal isn't always the best value in the long term, so compare contract length and 'thereafter' price once your discount ends. If peace of mind is more important, you may prefer to lock into a deal with long-term savings, or if you're on the hunt for a SIM-only plan, seek a 'price for life' deal."

This Saturday is World Consumer Rights Day, and with the CCPC revealing that 1 in 4 shoppers are still unsure of their rights when returning faulty goods, Switcher.ie shares seven myth-busting facts around refund rights, including how long you're protected under consumer law and when you're entitled to a full refund. 1. Gift recipients now have equal rights Under new legislation introduced in 2022, gift recipients now have exactly the same rights as the original buyer. If you have proof of purchase, and your gift turns out to be faulty, you can return it for a repair, exchange or refund. 2. Buying online means additional refund rights If you buy something online, you have more rights than buying from a high street store. You're entitled to a 14 day 'cooling-off period', which means you can return the item within that time, even if you've just had a change of heart. This is because you can't view the goods before committing to purchase. 3. A major fault entitles you to a full refund If your purchase turns out to be faulty or not fit for purpose and the seller can't repair or replace it, you're entitled to a full refund. You're also entitled to an automatic refund if the product you've bought has a major fault or the shop can't repair or replace it in a reasonable time. Though many retailers will do so out of goodwill, unfortunately, you have no rights if you have a change of heart, so always double-check the returns policy before buying. 4. A receipt is not the only proof of purchase If you need to provide proof of purchase, scrambling to find a crumpled receipt isn't the only option - remember you can also provide a debit or credit card statement or an emailed order confirmation. 5. You must get your refund within 14 days If you're due a refund, you must receive it within 14 days, and you have the right to insist it's in the same form as the original payment. For example, if you paid in cash, the retailer is obliged to refund you in cash. 6. After buying a faulty good, your rights last 6 years Though redress rights are stronger in the first 30 days and the first year after making a purchase, under consumer law, you're still protected for up to six years after buying a faulty product, with the retailer responsible for resolving the issue. 7. Warranties are separate from consumer rights Though product guarantees and warranties sold by retailers can offer added protection, they are separate from your statutory rights. Even if a product guarantee or warranty has expired, you may still be entitled to a repair, replacement or refund. Switcher.ie's consumer champion, Eoin Clarke, comments: "Knowing your refund rights means a better chance of securing an exchange or a refund when things go wrong, meaning not a cent of your hard-earned cash goes to waste. You're entitled to a full refund if a product has a major fault or the retailer can't repair or replace it. While redress rights are stronger in the first month and year after purchase, you're still protected for up to six years under consumer law. Remember, a bank statement or email confirmation of your order also counts as proof of purchase and buying online entitles you to additional rights, like 14 days to change your mind, with no questions asked." Vodafone has been awarded Broadband Provider of the Year, while 48 won Mobile Network of the Year at the Switcher.ie Awards 2025. Now running for over a decade and in its twelfth year, the Switcher.ie Awards spotlight brilliance in the broadband and mobile industry and help customers choose the best providers and services for their needs. This year, Vodafone excelled in the Broadband Awards, pocketing four prizes in total. In addition to Broadband Provider of the Year, they swept up three other Public Choice awards and were voted Best Value Broadband Provider, Best Customer Service, and Best Technical Support. Sky won TV Provider of the Year for the 11th year running, and eir clinched Best Broadband Bundle for the first time since 2020. In recognition of Ireland's smaller providers, Pure Telecom won Best Alternative Network. 48 triumphed in the Mobile Awards, securing three prizes. Alongside winning the top accolade, Mobile Network of the Year, 48 was named the Best SIM-Only PAYG Plan and was the public choice for Best Customer Service. The public chose GoMo as the Best Value Mobile Network, while our judges assessed newcomer Sky Mobile as offering the Best SIM-Only Bill Pay Plan. Independent consumer research determined the Public Choice winners, while the Switcher.ie Judge's Awards were selected by telecoms experts at Switcher.ie. Eoin Clarke, Commercial Director of Switcher.ie, comments: "For over ten years, the Switcher.ie Awards have recognised Ireland's leading telecom providers. We're confident that the combination of public voting and expert judging provides valuable guidance for customers seeking the best providers and services. As more Irish households access super-fast full-fibre broadband, they expect nothing less than speedy, reliable service, great value, and responsive customer support. Whereas mobile customers are seeking more than decent 4G or 5G coverage; they want plans that offer great value, simplicity, and flexibility. This is evident in the Irish public's shift away from traditional networks. This year's winners deserve a big round of applause, especially the overall champions in both categories. Vodafone's four awards - including Broadband Provider of the Year - are proof of the network's fair pricing, quality provision and outstanding customer service. We also congratulate 48, who scooped three awards, including Best Mobile Provider of the Year." New research by Switcher.ie has revealed the best Irish counties for work-life balance. The study is based on data like access to local amenities like primary schools, major supermarkets and leisure centres, services like broadband and mobile speeds, proximity to green spaces and transport routes, plus house prices and crime rates. A new Code of Practice, launched in 2024, gives employees the right to request remote work carer's leave and other flexible arrangements. With 32% working from home at least one day a week during 2022, it looks like the move towards a better work-life balance is here to stay. Property price is often a crucial factor for house buyers, but broadband and mobile connectivity, easy access to local amenities, and proximity to green spaces can make all the difference when juggling work with family or other commitments. Switcher's research highlights several counties across Ireland that offer young professionals and working families a combination of affordability, an appealing way of life, and better-than-ever broadband and mobile connectivity for remote working. Our top performers spanned the country, with Galway and Sligo on the scenic west coast, Cork in the south, Roscommon and Westmeath in the heart of Ireland and Carlow and Dublin in the industrious east, to name just a few. With so many ways to spend on holiday, working out the cheapest or most convenient method to pay can be quite confusing. The good news is, whether using travel cash or payment cards, there are several things we can do to ensure we get the most out of our spending money. 1. Pay in local currency Hotels, shops, and cash machines may offer the option to pay in local currency or euros when you use your card. Always choose to pay in local currency. If you select euros, the retailer converts the currency, so rates will almost certainly be higher. If you have a card designed for travel, opt for local currency, and you may pay next to nothing in fees. 2. Get a prepaid card or one designed for travel The arrival of contactless payments means more people are ditching cash and tapping to pay. It's simple and safe, plus mobile banking apps make it easy to track holiday spending. Prepaid cards like the An Post Currency Card can help you stick to a budget. Alternatively, digital accounts like N26, Revolut and Wise offer low or no-fee foreign transactions and hard-to-beat exchange rates. 3. Order foreign currency in advance If you're spending abroad with foreign cash, you'll get the best deal if you order currency online. Changing cash at the airport should be your last resort, so compare costs online to get the cheapest rates. Remember to factor in delivery charges or pick up in person. Often, the more currency you order, the better the rate, so club together if you're holidaying with friends. 4. Go online and consider locking in rates Most online sites offer tools to see how much currency you'll get in return for your euro. Watch out for extra charges, and know that 0% commission doesn't necessarily mean a good deal because the exchange rate may be poorer. Reduce costs further by changing your money or locking in a rate when the euro is strong, even if it's months ahead of your trip. 5. Avoid ATM cash withdrawals Steer clear of using cash machines on holiday to stop transaction fees and ATM charges piling up. Pay with your card where possible, especially if you have a prepaid currency card or travel credit card. If you're using cash on your trip, give yourself a daily budget so you don't run out of euros or return home with unspent currency. 6. Download your banking app Most bank accounts come with the option to download a banking app so you can access your account instantly or on the go. Mobile banking allows us to track spending in real-time, monitor transaction fees, and quickly spot errors. If you lose your card or it's stolen, most apps allow you to freeze it instantly. So, if you're using your bank account card abroad, be sure to download your banking app and sign in before you leave. Eoin Clarke at Switcher.ie comments: "Cash or card is a familiar holidaymaker dilemma, and both have pros and cons. The choice ultimately comes down to preference, but regular travellers should consider a debit or credit card designed for spending abroad. Sunseekers who prefer to splash the cash should set a budget and order currency online for the best rates. A prepaid travel card is a good option for holidaymakers who like the convenience and security of a card, but are wary of transaction fees and hidden costs. For peace of mind - if you're using your bank card, download your banking app and keep an eye on transactions to avoid costly spending mistakes.

1. Watch out for clones Copycat airlines and bogus holiday firms may try to trip you up. Cloned websites can spoof logos or branding to make themselves appear like the real deal. Check the URL matches the official website and verify the contact details. While the IAA sign should mean your holiday is protected, scammers can use fake licence numbers, so double-check with IAA.ie if you are in doubt. 2. Don't fall for fake tours and activities Avoid paying for activities from scam operators that advertise or tout non-existent activities or trips. Check out verified reviews and be alert to red flags such as poorly spelt adverts or limited-time offers. If buying on holiday from a street vendor, don't feel pressured to make decisions on the spot. 3. Beware social media promotions Facebook, X, TikTok, and Instagram ads may pop up in your feed to entice you with quick and easy getaways. Slick ads can impersonate airlines or hotels and advertise holidays that don't exist. You may even get fake confirmation emails or booking references. Always check the authenticity of the profile, book flights and hotels directly and only part with your money once you're 100% sure it's legit. 4. Don't pay faux fees Counterfeit websites set up to mimic Government bodies continue to trick consumers into paying hefty service fees for renewing passports or free EHIC cards. Check the URL matches the official website before parting with any personal details, and look for hidden costs before paying for your passport. 5. Check airport parking reviews Airport parking can really add to holiday costs, so it's tempting to book the cheapest option. Airport parking rouges may claim to keep your car in a safe and secure place, but the reality may differ. Avoid returning home to find your car damaged, dirty, or with added mileage by booking a reputable parking firm. 6. Guard against car hire scams If you hire a car or scooter online or abroad, read the paperwork, take photos and check the vehicle carefully before signing the documents and driving away. If not, you could end up paying for damage you did not cause or extras you didn't need. Consider buying cheaper car hire excess cover from a separate insurer before you go. Eoin Clarke, Commercial Director at Switcher.ie comments "Everybody looks forward to a holiday in the sun. It's a time when people have fun, relax, and let their guard down. Sadly, fraudsters are all too ready to take advantage of sun-seeking, carefree holidaymakers, who become easy targets for scams and ripoffs. "A holiday abroad can really lift the spirits, but being careful doesn't mean having less fun. Plan ahead and pay securely for activities and day trips so you're not rushed into parting with your cash. Make sure to research the website, read company reviews, and scrutinise the small print to avoid being duped by a scam deal that'll leave you disappointed and out of pocket. "Sorting things like travel insurance and prepaid travel or credit cards in advance can protect you if things go wrong and may ultimately help your holiday money go further." My latest pre-ISE-2024 videocast features WyreStorm's Voislav Zec, product director, and Franklyn Mogale, technical sales engineer, who used the opportunity to debut a new educationally focused product live on the show. It's a truly hybrid switcher designed to integrate into any classroom, and includes a built-in matrix that can manage HDMI, HDBaseT (3.0), USB-C and AV-over-IP signals simultaneously. Yes, all that in one! In addition, the company will use ISE to launch a cloud-based management system (powered by Xyte), new AV-over-IP transmitters and receivers and a totally new 4K-capable wireless system. WyreStorm is in stand/booth 3A900 at ISE so make sure stop by!

In this episode, Dave and Jamison answer these questions: I feel like I'm stuck. I'm in a senior/lead position technically called an SRE, but I find myself doing all kinds of cleanup work that should instead be spread across teams. My suggestions for automating toil and cleaning up tech debt fall on deaf ears until some principal engineer decides a couple of months down the line some problem is worth solving (then it's urgent!!1). I've experienced this at a few companies now and see some patterns, but I'm not sure what the way out is yet. It seems I need to find the most respected person (and fight them! just kidding), gain their trust, and play politics to get basic problems solved and work properly distributed. I am exhausted. If you want me to lead, then give me the power I need to lead. If you want me to be a cog, then make it a decent work environment and pay enough. I feel like I'm stuck in some sort of purgatory. I'm considering going for a management job, but I think I'd hate it. How can I find a 9-5 that isn't soul sucking and run by a few people who have the ear of the C-level? As two people who lead engineering teams, have conducting tons of interviews for developers and hired many, what are your opinions on the prospects of career changing self-taught developers landing a decent job in 2023 forward? I have a career in Product Marketing, working very closely with Product, Engineering, and Sales teams. I believe I bring a lot of the “soft skills” to the table and am teaching myself the “hard skills”. My concerns are that it will be incredibly difficult to actually find a job and, if I do, it'll be an entry level role that effectively resets my existing 9-year career back to the starting blocks. In your experiences, would you hire folks looking to make a career move in anything other than junior positions, or would you be wary of them in favor of other candidates?
