Minister of Enterprise, Trade and Employment Peter Burke, T.D., has announced the annual results of the Local Enterprise Offices (LEOs) for 2024, showing that companies supported by the Local Enterprise Office Fingal created 197 net new jobs in 2024. This marks an increase from the 178 jobs created in 2023. The net jobs created by Local Enterprise Office Fingal-supported clients in 2024 was 197, which takes into account companies that amalgamated, ceased trading, and those that transferred to Enterprise Ireland. The total national figures for the Local Enterprise Offices across the country were also announced, with the LEOs now financially supporting 39,541 jobs across 7,176 companies. This represents the highest number of jobs supported by the Local Enterprise Offices since their inception in 2014. In 2024, 7,104 new jobs were created by LEO client companies, with a net job creation figure of 2,459. This represents a 7% increase nationally compared to 2023. The LEOs also continue to provide substantial funded supports to thousands of other small businesses nationwide through programs such as the Energy Efficiency Grant, Lean for Business, Green for Business, along with training and mentoring. Minister Peter Burke, T.D., said: "The 31 Local Enterprise Offices continue to be the primary anchor for economic development in communities across the country. Our LEOs ensure that every small business, regardless of location, has a support system available to them, no matter what their concern. The continued broadening of the Local Enterprise Office remit highlights the value they add to our SME community. It has never been easier for a small business to access support through their Local Enterprise Office, including companies looking to digitalise their operations, take their first steps in sustainability, or identify new markets. These areas will be key pillars going forward to ensure our small businesses can continue to compete both at home and abroad. Government is firmly committed to supporting them all the way." The Local Enterprise Offices were at the forefront of supporting small businesses across the country in 2024, helping thousands secure funding, upskill, and avail of support to become more sustainable and competitive. New supports, such as the Grow Digital Voucher and Market Explorer Grant, were also introduced to help small businesses digitalise and explore new markets. Oisín Geoghegan, Head of Enterprise at Local Enterprise Office Fingal, said: "The results announced today are a testament to Ireland's small business community. When faced with adversity, they have adapted, pivoted, upskilled, and did whatever it took to sustain themselves. The figures show that companies have seen the opportunities in the challenging trading conditions they have faced. The Local Enterprise Offices across the country have gone above and beyond in their support of small businesses, but there is renewed optimism. We are seeing new opportunities for Irish businesses, and as always, during tough economic periods, we see new ideas and companies emerge and flourish. This year will be no different, and as we continue to work closely with Enterprise Ireland and the local authorities to ensure our small businesses get the best possible support, there are certainly green shoots emerging across the country." Carol Gibbons, Head of Entrepreneurship, Regions and Local Enterprise at Enterprise Ireland, said: "2024 was a challenging year for business, and these very positive employment results are a testament to the dedication and commitment of the LEO network across the country and the ambitious businesses it supports. Fingal County Council says it will not consider an application to lift the passenger cap that limits numbers at Dublin Airport to 32 million a year, saying the application from the DAA is invalid. Speaking to Pat this morning with more on this was Councilor Cathal Boland, former mayor and deputy mayor of Fingal Co. Council and former Vice President of the Airport Regional Council of Europe.

This summer, Vodafone boosted connectivity by placing temporary sites at ten major events across the country, including, Bloom, Kaleidoscope, Flavours of Fingal, All Together Now, Tullamore show, Moynalty Steam Threshing and Electric Picnic, as well as events within Malahide Castle. St Annes Park and Marlay Park, including Longitude Festival. Looking back at the traffic, the team at Vodafone saw that the network handled more than 140 terabytes (TB) of data, equivalent to about 11 years of streaming videos, and approximately 2 million voice calls, facilitating customers' need to stay connected and share their special moments. As anticipated, Electric Picnic struck a chord, amping up over 40% of the total data and dialling in over 50% of the total calls across these summer events. The recent Fleadh in Wexford, and Electric Picnic showcased an array of app usage among attendees, highlighting the evolving needs and interests of festival-goers. Not surprisingly for Ireland, weather apps were among the most popular. Approximately 40,000 Vodafone customers at the Fleadh and 50,000 at Electric Picnic checked in on the apps to stay informed about weather conditions. Map apps also played a crucial role, guiding around 50,000 Fleadh attendees and 45,000 Electric Picnic goers. Additionally, social media and communication apps like Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram and TikTok saw substantial usage, enabling festival-goers to share their experiences and memories in real-time. In addition to summer events, Ireland welcomed global superstars Taylor Swift and Coldplay to our shores. Vodafone's network team prepared for uplifts in data traffic at these major concerts. At the Taylor Swift's shows, Vodafone recorded record-breaking data consumption at the Aviva, with traffic peaking each night the moment she took to the stage. Similarly, during Coldplay's performances, the network handled a significant increase in data usage, particularly on Sunday when Aslan made their first surprise appearance. The network upgrades across these events underscore Vodafone's commitment to delivering a reliable service. By effectively managing substantial data volumes and maintaining consistent connectivity, Vodafone has facilitated a seamless experience for their customers throughout the summer at multiple events. The last time we pulled into the Starlite in Fingal, we stumbled into a hotbed of community memory, as it was all-school reunion day. The Starlite still stands. Its rounded roof spans white stucco walls. Top front, above the entry, is the Starlite Garden sign, indescribably inviting. The building now opens for events and functions.

College students from Dublin have been learning data science skills and putting them into practice to suggest policies that could support people facing homelessness. The students from Larkin Community College and St. Joseph's, Fairview, used publicly available short-term letting data to find out how much housing is available to rent across four areas - the city of Dublin, Dunleary, Fingal, and South Dublin. They presented their findings at a recent showcase event, detailing how many people could be supported into housing from the €242 million of funding allocated by the Irish government to tackle homelessness. Analytics and AI leader SAS sponsored the project, which is part of the global education initiative P-TECH, founded by IBM. It aims to equip young people with the academic, technical and professional skills required for 21st-century jobs and ongoing education. It includes a number of partners from industry and education, as well as a school and two colleges. As part of the five-week course, the students visited SAS' Irish headquarters in Dublin, where they took part in a range of team-building activities and learned how to use software such as SAS Visual Analytics and SAS Visual Statistics. They also developed their project management and presentation skills. Jean de Villiers, Head of Analytics at SAS Ireland, said: "As always, it was a pleasure to work with such inquisitive and talented students who discovered how data can be used to devise solutions to real-world problems. In just a few weeks, the team learned valuable new data analytics skills that could help set them up for a future career in tech. "Demand for use of data across every industry, including the appetite for artificial intelligence (AI), means that it's critical to the economy and our society that the next generation have the opportunity to learn data literacy and analytics skills. The tech industry offers highly rewarding career pathways, and we want to open them up to as many people as possible." There is a major shortage of people with the data-related skills that businesses are looking for. SAS conducted a survey of decision-makers from major firms in the UK & Ireland, with an average of 27,000 employees, which revealed that 44% of firms surveyed plan to invest in AI technology but 63% said their staff did not have the AI skills necessary and 61% did not have enough staff to deliver the benefits of AI. Compounding this problem, 53% of respondents were unsure what AI qualifications and skills were needed. De Villiers added: "Initiatives like P-Tech play a key role in ensuring that organisations have the capabilities they need to make the most of new technologies so they can innovate and grow - and we are pleased to be able to share our expertise through training." Alongside SAS and IBM, other P-Tech industry partners include Irish Life, Salesforce, Cisco, Virgin Media and Irish Water. SAS offers a number of training courses aimed at people who want to gain or build on their data analytics skills.

SIRO, the ESB and Vodafone joint venture company currently rolling out a €1 billion Gigabit broadband network across Ireland, has announced that its services are now available to 50,000 homes and businesses in Dublin City, and to 100,000 premises overall across the wider Dublin area. The €100 million rollout is part of a strategy to make services powered by SIRO available to areas underserved by fibre to the home broadband. The expansion in the capital follows close collaboration with Dublin City Council's Telecoms Unit and with the broadband officers in the other three Dublin local authorities to advance its Dublin network roll-out. Within Dublin City Council's borders this includes 'new' SIRO areas such as Dublin's Docklands, East Wall, Walkinstown, Kimmage and Crumlin. SIRO's network is already well established in other parts of the city such as Fairview, Raheny, Finglas, Artane or Coolock. This is in addition to SIRO's expanded network footprint across the four Dublin local authority areas, which now encompasses more than 30 suburban towns from Balbriggan in Fingal as far south as Shankill in Dun Laoghaire Rathdown. SIRO plans to continue to build across Dublin city and county where other commercial opportunities exist. Lord Mayor of Dublin, Daithí de Róiste noted: "This is a really positive investment for Dublin, and I am delighted that the City Council have been able to support SIRO in the delivery of this essential digital infrastructure particularly in areas such as East Wall, Docklands. Kimmage and Crumlin. We need to ensure that all of our communities have access to high quality broadband services and are not left behind as the adoption of new technologies and digital services continue to accelerate." SIRO John Keaney Chief Executive Officer, noted: "The presumption that our cities already enjoy universal full fibre connectivity can be inaccurate. Poor broadband can exist in areas of our cities and its suburbs, just as much as it can be found in more remote areas. This episode is a chat with Cressida Cowell, author of the How To Train Your Dragon books, the Wizards of Once series and Which Way to Anywhere. Cressida grew up in London where her Dad, Michael Hare, had significant roles in several well known organisations. In the 1970's Michael bought the island of Little Colonsay, which lies between Ulva and Staffa, which was to become the family's summer home. The island, it's history, topography and setting had a profound affect on young Cressida's imagination and her summers would be spent in a reverie of story making, listening to the tales her Dad would tell her of the people of these islands' past. These experiences lead to Cressida becoming an author, and not just any author. Her works have been translated into 38 languages and sold tens of millions of copies around the world. There are film and tv adaptations of her work. In our time together we talked about her childhood memories of Little Colonsay and the people who helped her family to build their home there. We talk about her father and his love of nature. We explore the impact that the island had on her imagination, and how that lead to her career. Cressida goes on to talk about her maternal Grandfather, Alan Hare, and his experiences in the 2nd World War in Albania and how that generation of people influenced her writing. We then talk about the importance of the natural world and the nature of climate change. I owe a big thank you to my dear friend Colin Morrison for putting me in contact with Cressida. Colin and his family run Turus Mara, which, departing from Ulva Ferry, to my mind, is the best way to see Staffa, Fingal's Cave and to meet the puffins on Lunga for some puffin therapy. Y'all know we loved Edinburgh the first time and were excited to get back and conclude our trip there too. We stayed at the Dalmahoy Hotel & Country Club which was on the outskirts of Edinburgh. We took time to check out Saint Giles Cathedral, explore more at the museum, walk around Old Town, go to Holy Rood, and have tea at the Fingal. It was a great 2 days to conclude the trip. We had a not so great travel day on the way home and ended up missing out flight in Boston to get home but nothing could ruin the AMAZING trip that we had just finished. I would travel back to Scotland in a heart beat. Next week on the podcast we will be answering all your questions about Scotland. We are embarking on the second half of our trip and cannot believe how much we have packed into the first half. While the days seem to go by quickly, overall it feels as if we have been gone for months. I was particularly excited about traveling to Isle of Skye. AND let me tell you that the views and drive to get to Isle of Skye (or as the locals just call it Skye) did not disappoint. This is the Scotland weather that we were expecting. The first time on the trip that I got cold. I had dressed in fall weather clothing all of the other days and finally decided to pull out an athletic dress to wear on the coldest/rainiest day that we has on the whole trip.  Unfortunately, we did not get the chance to do most of the outdoor/hiking activities we had planned so Skye is definitely an area that we have to travel back to. After our hotel debacle we were able to stay in an incredibly beautiful castle-like bed and breakfast our only night in Skye. We then headed to Stirling where we had an equally beautiful place to stay while we spent our last two days before heading back to Edinburgh for a few days.  We visited the William Wallace Monument and had tea on the Fingal. As summer begins in the garden, David Maxwell finds inspiration at Ireland's biggest gardening show. In its 17th year, Bord Bia Bloom attracted over 100,000 visitors. In the programme, David catches up with Oliver Shurmann from Mount Venus nurseries who designed an imaginative woodland garden for under 5s which won best large garden and with house plants more popular than ever, Pat Keville from Plantstore.ie shows David his exhibit which took the best in show nursery award. Other highlights from the show include; Belfast designer Linda McKeown's garden for Tusla Fostering, “The Next Step” garden designed by student, Joseph Eustace as part of Bord Bia's new Cultivating Talent initiative and Jane McCorkell's “A Breathing Space for Fingal”. Jenny flexes her geology skills as she explains the complex deep time story of how this incredible island came to form on the earth through volcanic activity. We explore the massive mythology that connects Fingal's Cave to the Giant's Causeway in County Antrim and wonder at the legends of Fionn mac Cumhaill, sometimes anglicised as Finn MacCool. We cover the infamous lore of Fionn's feud with Scottish giant Benandonner, as well as a less-known love story alternative of how the astounding Giant's Causeway was formed. Was this incredible geologic feature formed by war, or love? Finally, Annie has dug up a strange little piece of local folklore about an infamous monster that is said to use Fingal's Cave for some pretty gruesome deeds.
