As the flu season kicks into full swing, there has been an upsurge in cases which are leading to hospitalisations. It is predicted that the peak of the flu season and hospitalisations will be around Christmas week or even into early January. Could we have done more to prevent this in the form of enhanced vaccines? Well, the HSE didn't deem enhanced vaccines cost-effective this year, but there has been political pushback, particularly from backbench government TDs. We discussed the pros and cons of the standard flu vaccine with local TD and GP Martin Daly. The problem of aggressive seagulls in Galway city centre has been highlighted on a number of occasions on our programme over the past number of years. In severe cases, people have been attacked by the birds, and some have required medical attention. They have also been associated problems like taking food off people, and defecating on locals. We discussed the ongoing problem of bullish seagulls in Galway City with Fine Gael Councillor Frank Fahy. He wants bylaws enacted to fine businesses who are not disposing of their litter correctly, as some businesses leave their rubbish out in bags which can be pecked and opened up by the birds. We also discussed the potential of a 'puppy patrol' or falconry to deter these birds from terrorising the city centre. Australia has announced a social media ban on certain platforms for teenagers under the age of 16. It came into effect in the middle of the week. We discussed whether this should be introduced here in Ireland and the European Union with a number of contributors. We heard first from a 17-year-old schoolgirl from Gort who admits that more needs to be done to safeguards teens on social media, but doesn't believe an outright ban is the way to go. We also heard from Alex Cooney, the CEO of Cybersafe Kids, who gave her thoughts on the issue, and we got the political opinion of Independent Ireland Councillor Noel Thomas. All agree that things need to change when it comes to social media, but they have varying views on whether or not there should be an outright ban for under 16s. It's that time of year again! Oh no it isn't! Oh yes it is! Renmore Pantomime Society are celebrating 45 years in existence. They're putting on a performance of Jack and the Beanstalk, the iconic panto. We started off this week by paying tribute to the activist, actress, and author, Margaretta D'Arcy, who passed away last Sunday. Tributes were paid from right across the political spectrum, and we also heard from some key people involved in activism, political representatives, and people from the Arts as well. We started off by hearing from Joe Coughlan who knew her from Woodquay. The City Council budget was also passed this week, with one businessman very disillusioned by the 3% increase in commercial rates and by increases to parking charges in the city. Brendan Holland, owner of Holland's shop in town, said that it is unthinkable to consider a commercial rates increase, and the fact that a 13% increase was even in the conversation is beggars belief. Cash is very much King. We heard about the Access to Cash legislation which has come into force. We debated this with Independent Ireland Deputy Michael Fitzmaurice. He weighed up the pros and cons of this legislation, adding that there is a lot of work to do in terms of getting access to ATMs in smaller villages. The maroon and white rejoiced as a €3 billion funding investment in infrastructure was allocated for Galway this week. Whether it isthe City Ring Road getting a billion, also the Western Rail Corridor and Bus Connects it was a significant investment in the NDP. Other projects being earmarked for progression, included the Claregalway Bypass and the Athenry Inner Relief Road. We discussed that on the programme with a number of relevant stakeholders, including the Galway Commuter Coalition, one of the householders of the Ring Road route who have been left in limbo for the past 15 years, and representative of Western Rail Corridor Group, Councillor Peter Feeney.

It was an incredibly busy week in Irish politics. Government, media and the general public were quite shocked by the resignation of Finance Minister Paschal Donoghue. Thus meant that Cabinet Ministries had to be reshuffled, and into the senior Ministry of Education and Youth came Hildegarde Naughten, a big achievement for Ms. Naughten, a first for Fine Gael in the Galway West constituency, and a first minister for the constituency since Éamon Ó Cuív was a minister back in 2011. We discussed and congratulated the appointment with Hildegarde Naughten. Staying with education now, and Scoil an Chroí Naofa National School in Ballinasloe has been waiting for a new school build for some 24 years. There've been a number of false starts and false promises, and the school has really intensified a campaign, searching for locals and people interested in this area to sign up and demand a school build to be put top of the agenda in the Department of Education. We discussed this on the programme with the Principal of Scoil an Chroí Naofa, Christine Connor. It's a pivotal time for the Irish farming community and farming in general right across the European Union. The Mercosur trade agreement will be debated and voted on in the European Parliament this coming Monday. Now, we've been discussing this throughout the course of the week on Galway Talks, and we had Ciarán Mullooly, Independent Ireland MEP for the Midlands–North-West constituency, on the programme. He has a number of concerns with the Mercosur trade agreement in its current form as they seek to get assurances that Irish farming will not be left uncompetitive with South American countries who may not be up to the regulatory standards that we have here in Ireland and across the European Union. We discussed this on the programme with MEP Mullooly and also farming in general. Now, as Ireland gets ready to hold the Presidency of the European Union next year, security of our nation and topics like neutrality really come to the fore. But the situation this week with the spy ship which is coming down by the coast of Scotland has really geared up talk on what the Russian threat exactly is and are we best placed and prepared here in Ireland to deal with that threat? We discuss it on the programme with Dr. Brendan Flynn, who is from the School of Political Science and Sociology at the University of Galway.

Parking metres continue to be a bone of contention here in Galway city and with City Councillors, as a legal settlement has been reached between the city council and the private company who were operating the machines in and around the city centre. Fine Gael councillor Frank Fahy has hit out at the fact that we don't know what the settlement was and he also wants clarity on how the parking situation can be improved upon in the future, as we are currently left in limbo. He joined me on the programme earlier on this week to highlight his concerns. The issue of road safety in Kinvara was brought into focus again this week as a number of schoolchildren protested from Seamount College, the National School and the creche. They marched through the village on Thursday at 12 noon, calling for safe crossings along the busy stretch of the N67. Currently, there is no traffic management plan for the village and there are no traffic lights or pedestrian crossings for the children. With many children exiting out of buses, they are having to cross the road at peak times. Our reporter, Saoirse Duhan was out there and spoke to a number of the children who were part of the demonstration and our reporter, David Nevin, also spoke to the Principal of Seamount College. The Government published their new housing plan this week, and it got a mixed response. Government spokespeople say that there are ambitious targets and that there have been a number of changes which will improve the lot of first-time buyers, developers, and builders looking to ramp up construction and infrastructure projects in the country. The Opposition have said that a lot of announcements in this plan have already been published in previous documents from previous governments, and they've added that it lacks the ambition and the mechanisms to allow us to ramp up the speed of our housing targets. We discussed this on the programme with Minister Seán Canney and also with Sinn Féin TD Mairéad Farrell. Don't forget the best of Galway Talks comes out every Saturday and Sunday morning between 7:00 and 8:00. Join us again on Monday morning for Galway Talks and after 11:00 Our Galway Great is none other than the Westside native and former Republic of Ireland international goalkeeper, David Forde.

This week on Galway Talks, We heard the powerful story of Jade McFarlane. She was raped by her friend's father in their home when she was just 19 years of age. She bravely waived her anonymity so that she could name her rapist. She came on to the programme this week and shared her story with us We also heard of the situation in Ballybane over the mid-term break. A number of stones were thrown at vehicles and buses, some causing injury to the passengers within them. There have been calls for better lights in the area and also for stakeholders to come together in the area to tackle this problem head-on. We discussed it on the programme with Donal Lynch, community activist in the Ballybane area, but also with FF Cllr. Alan Cheevers. International Protection Applicants and violence directed at them was very much to the fore again this week. A lot of commentators are blaming this increase in aggression towards international protection centres on government rhetoric. Sai Gujulla is himself an immigrant into this country and said we need to see leadership now rather than diverting blame. Some politicians have been accused of conflating the lacking public services and housing situation with migrants and immigration. This week, climate change was very much in the mainstream here in Ireland, across Europe, and the world. Environment Ministers agreed on a 90% carbon emissions reduction by 2040, with some loopholes in effect between now and 2035. This has been welcomed in many of the green sectors, but there is criticism that it might not have gone far enough, while others say some of these targets are unachievable and may make us anti-competitive. We heard from people in Galway City who gave their thoughts on the climate situation here in Ireland and globally. We got the views of Green Party representative for Galway West for the upcoming by-election, Niall Murphy, and Independent Ireland Deputy Michael Fitzmaurice on the issue with me during the week.

In a week when the presidential election dominated national media, we focused in on healthcare and disabilities here on Galway Talks. We started off the week by hearing the story of Siobhán Cunningham. Her TikTok went viral when she posted outside A&E. The Loughrea woman had to sit back in her car because there was absolutely no room for her to sit down in the waiting room. She talked us through her journey of misdiagnosis, long waits in A&E, and also a lack of step-down support and care plans. Siobhán got a huge reaction from our listeners, who told their own stories of their own difficulties in A&E. We also focused in on mental health on the programme this week, when Wayne Murphy told us of his descent into despair. Wayne told us about how his brother's suicide triggered his own mental health crisis. He's now in recovery and is back out of the mental health support unit. He told us that he wants to be an inspiration to others to share their stories and speak out when they too are going through times of despair. Now, medical negligence was very much to the fore at the beginning of the week, as it was reported by the Irish Hospital Consultants Association that over €5.3 billion of the health budget goes towards the area. Money well spent from the patient's point of view but could it be used to invest in under pressure healthcare services? We debated that with Johan Verbruggen, Head of Medical Negligence with Fieldfisher.
