Morley's Mouthfuls: The ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza has yet again dominated much of the political discourse this week. The calls for Israeli war bonds to be moved from the Irish Central Bank seemed to have been heard by Israel, as they moved authorisation to another country in the EU, namely Luxembourg. However, this act is a drop in the ocean compared to what needs to happen at a political level according to many campaigners, activists and human rights experts. One Galway woman who has very much throw herself into Palestinian solidarity and aid efforts is Salthill poet Sarah Clancy. The flotilla aims to deliver aid to the population in Gaza, something which has not been allowed to happen on several occasions and is against international law. We followed this story up later in the week with the Galway Palestine Solidarity Campaign who will hold The West's Awake Rally for the cause this weekend. They want to see action and pressure brought to bear on Israel so that vital humanitarian aid can be delivered and a prevention of further loss of lives. One Palestinian shared his horror story of escaping the war torn region, his gratitude to make it safely to Ireland for medical treatment of his family and the personal losses he has experienced along the way. It remains to be seen what if anything will trigger a dialogue between Israel and Hamas. Meanwhile, while we are all used to complaining about the traffic in and around Galway City, one contributor to the show had a nightmare ordeal in a taxi. Maggie Regan and her friend got into a taxi, only for the driver to first go the wrong way and then verbally abuse them. She recalled the night on Galway Talks to a huge reaction and former taxi man and Fine Gael Cllr. Frank Fahy gave some advice on best practice to prevent and or deal with a situation like this in the future. While Frank contested that incidents like these were rare we did get an avalanche of texts in venting similar bad experiences. Cllr. Fahy also pointed out the fact that some taxi drivers are the subject to both verbal and physical abuse and that there are serious responsibilities and dangers with the profession, particularly those who drive night shifts. Galway GAA announced that Padraic Joyce will get a two year extension as manager of the senior football team, meaning the Killererin man will be at the helm until the end of the 2028 season. John Divilly has stepped away from the fray meaning there will be gaps to fill in the backroom team over the off season. With many high profile names in the mix it will be interesting to see will someone come through the ranks locally or will an outside name like Kieran Donaghy link in with the tribes. Ultimately, that will be a decision for Padraic Joyce. The housing situation was under the microscope again this week. Following on from the fact that homelessness figures reached another record high last week, we had the compounding effect of Galway being among the worst areas when it comes to dereliction and vacancy. Cllr Niall McNeilis of the Labour Party said that while Government had committed funding to tackle vacant homes, it is a drop in the ocean compared to the investment needed. We had a great day out in Kilnadeema Leitrim for our Community Matters programme from Finnerty's Mills. Next up is Corr Na Mona next Friday. Join us again for Galway Talks on Monday where our Galway Great after 11am is Jarlath McDonagh of Turloughmore.

Health issues were to the fore in more ways than one this week. There was a very public back and forth between the Health Minister Jennifer Carroll MacNeill and BAM in relation to the National Children's Hospital. Closer to home on Galway Talks we focused in on the Rare Diseases Strategy which is being developed for the next five years up to 2030. There are calls for expansion of rare diseases tested for, but also reliability of said tests. While plans and strategies are important, ultimately it is delivery of changes and implementations of health recommendations that will make differences on the ground. We got to see the real human impact of that when Renmore mother Roisin Costello joined us alongside Anne Lawlor, a founding member and chair of 22q Ireland. Very poignantly at the end of the interview Roisin laid bare that due to inaction on implementing changes other families have gone through similar situations to her family as genetic anomalies have not been caught by the screening system. She wants to see and has renewed her calls for a centralised screening lab here in Ireland so that nothing is missed by health officials. Giving families the medical advice they need by making them aware of all the factors going into subsequent pregnancies. BreastCheck missing screening targets for a second year running also made headlines locally here in Galway. We covered it with Prof. Michael Kerin who is over the cancer programme locally and Edel Shovlin the COO of the Irish Cancer Society. Staffing dominated the changes needed alongside implementation of recommendations and completed promised infrastructure projects. In more positive news for service users and family members in Loughrea, the Seven Springs Day Centre fully reopened this week following a long campaign from the Loughrea Concerned Citizens Group. Mattie Quinn heralded the reopening and put it down to people power, adding that “they won't be going away” anytime soon. The Presidential election has remained in the focus and this week on Galway Bay FM we heard calls for grassroots Fianna Fáil members to be given a say in who will contest the race for the Áras. Loughrea area Cllr. Michael Regan hit out at the top brass of the party and expressed his support for Eamon O'Cuív. He wants to see a democratic process opened up without delay. We should hear more on the next moves from Fianna Fáil next week when the Taoiseach discusses options with the parliamentary party. Meanwhile, two Ministers from the party were on Inis Oírr this week to announce the first announcement of the NDP spending ahead of Budget 2026. The island will benefit from over 35 million euro investment in its pier, some 20 years on from when the project became one of the many victims from the financial downturn. Better late than ever and a shock to islanders, planning will now begin in earnest to get the most out of this massive infrastructural boost to the area. Don't forget we are out and about on Friday next the 5th of September for Community Matters! We will be covering Kilnadeema Leitrim from Finnerty's Mills in the heart of Southeast Galway. Morley's Mouthfuls: This week on Galway Talks There were further developments relating to the Portiuncula University Hospital this week. A rally was held over the weekend in Ballinasloe were locals called for the reinstatement of full maternity services, evidence and research behind the clinical decision to remove high-risk pregnancies from the hospital and investment in the facility rather than anymore perceived downgrades. Things progressed this week, as a meeting was held on Wednesday between local health representatives and local politicians, where the West-Northwest Hospital Group doubled down on the fact that there would be no reversal of the clinical decision. This was much to the dismay of the newly formed Portiuncula Maternity Alliance and their co-founder Independent Councillor Dr. Evelyn Parsons joined us on Thursday mornings programme to express her dismay at the stance. This was followed later that morning by an exclusive interview with the Minister for Health Jennifer Carroll MacNeill where she also doubled down on the move saying that she must follow clinical advice and evidence, adding that the safety of expectant mothers was paramount. There was a stream of questions for the Minister testimonials from those affected in the wider catchment area of the Ballinasloe-based hospital and subsequent reaction to the Minister's remarks both positive and negative. It makes the campaign for the Portiuncula Maternity Alliance more difficult, and we will bring you all the latest on it as it develops on Galway Talks. As the summer season ends, we were privileged to be out and about this week at the 100th Annual Connemara Pony Show at the Clifden Showgrounds. It was a fantastic occasion showcasing an integral part of Connemara's living heritage. Terence Sweeney gave some great insights into how the show changed from the beginning back in the 1920's in Roundstone right up to the present day. We finished off the week with a thoroughly enjoyable broadcast in Glenamaddy for Community Matters and we will be back with you on Monday next where our Galway Great is the legendary Ray Berry.

Morley's Mouthfuls Over 250 people gathered in Ballinasloe on Tuesday night demanded that there will be no downgrade of the Portiuncula University Hospital in the town. The newly formed Portiuncula Maternity Alliance has set out their demands and a large community mobilisation has begun despite the fact that this all unfolded after an August Bank Holiday weekend. The contention from health officials and Government politicians is that the removal of some high risk pregnancies from the hospital follows clinical advice and recommendations. However, the newly formed group, which saw medical professionals, the INMO and affected mothers, give testimony and views on the night questioned who gave this recommendation and why? The called for a fully independent review and also queried why the Ballinasloe facility was singled out when other hospitals have similar if not worse outcomes. Echoes from the past like Roscommon Hospital and St Brigid's Campus were brought up on the night and there was a real sense that the town feared losing this longstanding hospital which was described by one woman on the night as the ‘heartbeat' of the town. A rally will take place next Saturday in the town, people continue to sign the groups' petition and as time goes on, one would ultimately expect that the completed petition will find its way up to Minister Jennifer Carroll MacNeill's desk. Many also highlighted on the night that it was more investment the hospital needed, not a removal of services and it will be interesting to see whether there will be investment forthcoming from the Government in Budget 2026 in the autumn. Student accommodation is continuing to be a problem year in year out and with the academic year fast approaching a plea for help has been issued from the ATU Student's Union. They are calling on homeowners with spare room to sign up to the Rent A Room scheme. There is also concerns as to tenants rights when it come to accommodation as the warning signs for scams are sent out as the mad scramble for rooms ensues over the next month. Again investment is needed quickly and it will be interesting to see if changes made by government on rents will see investors build enough accommodation quickly enough to tackle the demand out there in the market. No doubt we will be following up on these stories and more on Galway Talks this coming Monday where our Galway Great after 11am is Tomás Rua Mac Con Iomaire. The Best of Galway Talks broadcast on weekends between 7-8am.

We love talking about infrastructure in Galway and roads in particular. Even if for the most part it is giving out about inertia and long delays for vital projects. There was a welcome boost right across the board this week in that regard with the announcement of the multi-billion euro revised National Development Plan. While there was debate between Government and opposition as to how much of this was brand new investment. We will however have to wait until budget day to see what specific projects will have made it into the plan. The ring road (with ACP at the moment) should be there, along with other major projects, but can we see new major infrastructure announcements like the Claregalway bypass or a Gluas line for the city? Speaking of the budget, we have been hearing there will be no once off cost of living supports but that does not necessarily mean you can expect much in the line of tax cuts. The best case scenario Summer Economic Statement released by Government says that after taking into account the VAT reduction for hospitality to 9% there will only be half a billion to play with for income tax reductions. Now, should the US impose tariffs for 30% on the EU, it is very uncertain what relief measures Government will have the will, or the purse strings to deliver. The hospitality sector for their part seem to view the statement with suspicion, arguing that certain quarters never wanted to reduce VAT. The situation in Gaza has stayed to the forefront of news internationally, nationally and locally and we saw the horrifying scenes from hospitals in the region with dozens of children dying of starvation and malnutrition. Karol Balfe the CEO of Action Aid told us what the situation is like for volunteers and people on the ground. We also had a great day out in London for our Community Matters series all about the Galway Diaspora in the UK Capital with thanks to Ireland West Airport. Next Friday it is the turn of Westside.

Is the Crown Square rolling story finally over? Galway City Council will hope so. They quite emphatically put their colours to the mast over monetary evaluations over remaining in city hall and the move out to Mervue pointing out that their valuations show the move is justified. Only two councillors voted against the move and (similarly to the original vote on the move to Crown Square) asked for more time on information on the 60 million euro loan which will be made in repayments over three decades. Some questions still remain. The breakdown of the costs involved for one. These may be subject to commercial sensitivities but no doubt they will be followed up on by politicians and journalists alike. The Department still has to give the go ahead. But also there is the question of loan repayments. At over 3 million euro a year will the taxpayers of the city be expected to foot the bill? It will make Commercial Rates and LPT changes into the future very interesting. Endometriosis care was brought to the forefront in the Dáil this week. Sinn Féin brought forward a motion following on from engagement with women suffering with the condition via the means of a survey. While the Government didn't back the measures brought forward by the main opposition party (standard practice) it certainly has brought the need for a look at this aspect of women's healthcare in the spotlight once again. On Galway Talks we have covered the topic regularly on the programme in recent years, with one contributor raising money to fund treatment abroad. Galway advocate Katie Coughlan spoke of her lived experience while Sinn Féin TD Mairead Farrell gave her party's stance on the best way to provide treatment for those impacted by endometriosis. Galway sadly lost a legend of the music scene this week. Shantalla native Bernard ‘Mack' McNamara passed away and his passing was met by an outpouring of emotion and tributes. We were joined on the programme by the Mayor of Galway City Mike Cubbard and Gary Monroe of Monroe's to pay respects to one of the King's of Music in Galway. And if you enjoyed our Community Matters show from Glinsk then brace yourselves and pack your bags... Next up on Friday the 25th of July is Community Matters London, live from the London Irish Centre in Camden.

Morley's Mouthfuls Festival season is well and truly underway right across Galway. The Galway Film Fleadh (which we broadcasted from on Friday) is continuing to amaze audiences with a variety of genres, styles and actors in venues right across the city. However, far from there being a lull in newsy stories we covered a number of local, national and international stories on Galway Talks this week. Two stories very much linked to historical abuse were front and centre over the past few days, namely the exaction of the former Tuam Mother and Baby Home site and the announcement of a Commission of Investigation into historical abuse at religious run schools. The intervention team at Tuam invited media from the world over to North Galway to get a sense of the delicate work beginning there next week. The jury is still out on whether or not the Commission of Investigation into abuse at religious run schools will learn lessons from previous reports from other scandals. The farming sector has greeted news that the EU Commission will be requesting updates from Ireland on the Nitrates Derogation with a great deal of apprehension. For those not from a farming backgrounds, this exemption (only benefitting Ireland) may see reductions in livestock numbers if it is reduced. Glinsk native and Independent Ireland TD Michael Fitzmaurice gave the historic context of this latest development in Europe. The war in Gaza continues to be a firm point of discussion right across the world, but closer to home here in Galway many groups have been vocal in the support and have raised funds alongside their voices. Bríd Hennelly, Sabrina and Kay Egan and Evelyn Kelly joined us in studio to tell us about why they have decided to walk the Tóchar Phádraig to raise funds for Gaza Go Bragh. Bríd became inspired to do something tangible after working with Palestinian families through Direct Provision. The film fleadh will just be over and we will be jumping straight into the Galway International Arts Festival. We have been looking ahead to some of the stunning acts which will be rolling into town over the coming fortnight. One such act is comedian Al Murray, who brings his Pub Landlord persona to Leisureland later this month. We will be giving more insights into all the shows taking front and centre over the next two weeks on Galway Talks, starting with our first of two broadcasts from the Festival Garden this coming Monday morning. (Our Galway Great will be none other than the Artistic Director of the festival Paul Fahy.) We always love a bit of music on the programme and this week was no exception. Craughwell native Inis Meáin resident Una Ní Fhlánnagáin joined us as she launched a brand new type of harp alongside a new album. Support for Galway talent was on the double this week as Groev came in to play their new single ahead of performances in the Arts Festival Garden. Don't forget that next week we will also be out and about on Friday the 18th for our Community Matters Series in Glinsk, where we will be broadcasting from the National School in the village.
