Breifne Earley is joined by Aaron Clarke and Emma Kate Dineen to break down another dramatic weekend in the SSE Airtricity League Women's Premier Division. The episode begins with the standout game of the weekend as Galway United produced a stunning late comeback to defeat Athlone Town (5:53). With Athlone reduced to ten players and seemingly on course for a valuable away result, Galway struck twice late on — including a sensational equaliser from Remini Tillotson before Niamh Farrelly completed the turnaround deep into stoppage time.Attention then turns to Shelbourne's impressive away victory over Peamount United (23:02), where the visitors responded brilliantly after falling behind early to secure an important statement win.Sligo Rovers' emphatic 4-0 victory over Cork City (33:09) is next on the agenda, with Sydney Stephens continuing her outstanding form as the Bit O'Red produced one of their strongest performances of the season.Shamrock Rovers' composed win over DLR Waves (45:46) is also reviewed, with the Hoops continuing to strengthen their position near the top of the table.Treaty United's draw with Wexford FC (55:20) and Bohemians' stalemate against Waterford FC (1:06:09) round off the match discussions. The panel also examine the latest league table as Galway United extend their lead at the summit, Athlone remain firmly in contention despite defeat, and the battle for European places continues to intensify behind them.Match footage included with permission of the Football Association of Ireland, SSE Airtricity League of Ireland, TG4 and LOITV.

Jack Horgan-Jones and Mark Paul join Hugh Linehan to look back on the week in politics:· The findings of the Irish Times and TG4 by Ipsos B&A poll throws up some interesting permutations for the Dublin Central byelection. Sinn Féin's Janice Boylan leads the first preference vote at 21 per cent, Daniel Ennis of the Social Democrats is in second place on 18 per cent, but as Jack explains, ‘second preference intention' could be vital for both. · It is now a question of when and not if for Keir Starmer after disastrous local and parliamentary election results prompted a slew of Labour MPs to call on the prime minister to resign. A defiant speech on Monday did little to inspire party members as Starmer vowed to fight any leadership challenge. Greater Manchester mayor Andy Burnham has been given a route to challenge Starmer following Josh Simons' decision to step down as MP for Makerfield.· And speaking to The Irish Times on Wednesday, former taoiseach Bertie Ahern addressed his recent comments on immigration, made while out on a canvass last week in Dublin Central. And while no apology was forthcoming, he did point out that he had “no problem with people from the Congo or Africa or anywhere else. I've good friends around Drumcondra, there's a lot of the clergy in from Africa.” Could this controversy overshadow Fianna Fáil's Ard Fheis taking place today and tomorrow as the party marks its 100th year in existence?Plus, the panel picks their favourite Irish Times pieces of the week:· One Dublin mother's 14-year wait for a bigger council house, the challenges for Ireland of a Reform-led UK government, and how difficult it has become for Irish diaspora to return home.Would you like to receive daily insights into world events delivered to your inbox? Sinn Féin's Janice Boylan is leading the race to replace the Dáil seat held by former Minister for Finance Paschal Donohoe, according to a poll by TG4 and The Irish Times. Pat Leahy, Political Editor with the Irish Times joined Anton
The Irish Times and TG4 by Ipsos B&A poll shows Sinn Féin's Janice Boylan leads the byelection race in Dublin Central with first preference votes at 21 per cent, Daniel Ennis of the Social Democrats is in second place on 18 per cent. But Ennis will be in line for a lot of transfers from the fragmented left-wing vote, with Labour, People Before Profit and the Green Party all having candidates in the race. Veteran criminal Gerry Hutch is running in third place on 14 per cent, growing his vote from 9 percent in the last general election. Could his transfers play an important role for Boylan's path to victory? And Fianna Fáil's John Stephens is way back in the field on 4 per cent. His cause won't have been helped by Bertie Ahern's comments on immigration, captured while the former taoiseach was out on a byelection canvass last week. The poll shows immigration trails cost-of-living and housing as an issue for voters ahead of election day on May 22nd.Produced by John Casey.Would you like to receive daily insights into world events delivered to your inbox? Tá blianta fada caite ag Gráinne McElwain os comhair an cheamara mar láithreoir. D'fhág sí an mhúinteoireacht meánscoile agus í go fóill sna luath-fichidí chun gairm bheatha a chruthú di féin mar thuairisceoir agus mar láithreoir in earnáil an spóirt. Nuacht Mhall. Príomhscéalta na seachtaine, léite go mall.*Inniu an t-ochtú lá is fiche de mhí Feabhra. Is mise Eoin Ó Seachnasaigh.Tá sé mar aidhm anois ag Conradh na Gaeilge “gníomhú i dtreo Éire Aontaithe ar leas na Gaeilge agus na Gaeltachta” tar éis don Ard-Fheis vótáil ar son athraithe ar bhunreacht na heagraíochta. Bhí an ócáid bhliantúil ar siúl san Óstán Europa i mBéal Feirste an deireadh seachtaine seo caite, an chéad uair a reachtáladh é sa chathair le tríocha bliain. Lá suntasach a bhí ann don eagraíocht nuair a ghlac mórchuid de na baill gur chóir go mbeadh an Conradh i lár an aonaigh maidir le deireadh a chur le críochdheighilt na hÉireann. Tagann an fógra seo ag am cinniúnach don teanga, dar leis an taighdeoir Róisín Nic Liam, a thug rabhadh go mbeidh an Gaeilge i mbaol mura n-athraíonn meon an phobail agus muid ag druidim le comhaontú na tíre. I measc na n-abhár eile a pléadh, glacadh freisin le rún a éilíonn gníomh ó Stát na hÉireann chun dul i ngleic leis an ngéarchéim tithíochta sa Ghaeltacht agus moltaí ón gConradh agus ó eagraíochtaí ar nós Bánú a chur i bhfeidhm. Bronnadh Gradam an Uachtaráin ar an ngníomhaí cearta Fergus Ó hÍr as a chuid éachtaí thar na blianta, lena n-áirítear a sheasamh in aghaidh na mBlocanna H agus a cheannaireacht ar Raidió Fáilte.Níl an dara rogha ag foireann sacair na hÉireann ach a gcluichí i Sraith na Náisiún in aghaidh Iosrael a chomhlíonadh. Sin de réir Phríomhfheidhmeannach Cumann Sacair na hÉireann (an FAI) David Courell, i ndiaidh an fhógra go n-imreofaí cluiche baile i mBaile Átha Cliath ar an gceathrú lá de mhí Dheireadh Fómhair. Tuigeann an FAI go mbeidh an cinneadh seo deacair ar go leor den lucht tacaíochta, a deir a ráiteas, ach caithfidh siad cloí le rialacha UEFA nó glacadh leis an mbaol dícháilithe. Thacaigh gnáthbhaill FAI roimhe seo le rún ag iarraidh go gcuirfí Iosrael ar fionraí ó chomórtais UEFA mar gheall ar an gcinedhíothú sa Phalaistín. Bhí ráflaí ann go n-imreofaí an cluiche thar lear, ag cur san áireamh an teannas idir an dá thír agus an imní faoi chúrsaí slándála. Tuigtear, áfach, go bhfuil na Gardaí sásta nach mbeidh aon fhadhb ann. Níl a fhios fós cad a dhéanfaidh daoine mar fhreagra, ach is féidir a bheith ag súil le baghcat nó le hagóid ag an Staid Aviva ar an oíche.Tá Seachtain na Gaeilge 2026 beagnach buailte linn, agus chun an ócáid a cheiliúradh, beidh dhá scannán as Gaeilge le feiceáil i bpictiúrlanna ar fud na hÉireann. Beidh lucht féachana Cúla4 ar bís faoi fhilleadh carachtair bhuí áirithe ar an scáileán mór sa scannán beochana SpongeBob: Cá Bhfuil SquarePants? San eachtra nua seo, caithfidh SpongeBob a chrógacht a chruthú dá leathbhádóir, an tUasal Krabs, agus an bheirt acu sa tóir ar thaibhse fíochmhar. Más rud é go bhfuil tú ag lorg rud eicínt níos dorcha, áfach, is féidir leat dul chuig Báite, scéal noir atá suite sna seachtóidí, ina dtagann rúin ghránna chun solais tar éis corp a fháil i loch. Ba é Ruán Magan, deartháir Manchán, a stiúir an scannán, bunaithe ar an úrscéal The Lake, le script ón údar céanna, Sheena Lambert. Tá ardmholadh faighte ag Báite on eagarthóir coimisiúnaithe TG4, Máire Ní Chonláin, a deir go bhfuil sé “fréamhaithe go domhain in áit agus i gcarachtair”, le béim láidir ar shaibhreas scéalaíochta na Gaeilge.*Léirithe ag Conradh na Gaeilge i Londain. Tá an script ar fáil i d'aip phodchraolta.*GLUAIScríochdheighilt - partitionrún - resolutionbaol dícháilithe - risk of disqualificationar fionraí - suspendedleathbhádóir - partnereagarthóir coimisiúnaithe - commissioning editor
I am against MonarchiesCurrently, the British state is convulsed around allegations surrounding a member of its Royal family. Norway too is in the midst of a crisis around its monarchy. The law of both states will take their course, as is right. However, these controversies raise for me the very existence of monarchies. A family elite which through past colonial conquest and patronage, and in alliance with business and societal elites, continues to enjoy a place of wealth and privilege and influence. Given that the British state includes a part of Ireland, at least for the time being, this is more than an academic issue for those of us who are captives of this undemocratic system of privilege. I am instinctively against monarchies. Of any kind. Constitutional or otherwise. Monarchies are bad. The late Tony Benn put it well when he said that “the existence of a hereditary monarchy helps to prop up all the privilege and patronage that corrupts our society; that is why the crown is seen as being of such importance to those who run the country - or enjoy the privileges it affords.”Conradh na Gaeilge Votes for UnityAt the end of last year Oireachtas na Samhna in Belfast was a huge success. Thousands of Irish speakers, including Uachtarán Catherine Connolly, spent several days enjoying the music, dance, culture, arts, craic and discussions that are part of the oldest Irish language and arts event on the island of Ireland. In August Belfast will host the Comhaltas Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann, the world's biggest celebration of Irish music and culture. All of this is evidence of the change that is taking place. I was pleased to attend An Conradh's Ard Fheis. The conference was alive and vibrant with a new generation of young gaeilgeoirí determined to assert their Irishness, proud of their language and determined to stand up for their language and national rights. They were articulate, positive, funny, hopeful and generous. Micheál Martin out of step on UnityLast week, An Taoiseach Micheál Martin, in an interview with TG4, claimed that there is not much substance behind Sinn Féin's campaign on Unity. The Fianna Fáil leader, who has consistently rejected any common sense suggestions to prepare for unity, returned to his favourite and bogus argument that we need reconciliation before unity.Martin's comments are out of step with the political reality and popular opinion North and South. He also misses entirely the point that the demand for unity is not simply being put by Sinn Féin. Former leaders of Fine Gael and the SDLP, as well the SDLP leadership, Ireland's Future, the Irish Labour Party, the Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Good Friday Agreement and others are part of the growing demand for the Irish government to prepare for unity.
This year, the PorterShed in Galway will be the location for the 2026 Sustainable Media Ireland (SMI) annual conference. It is the first time it will be held outside of Dublin, and TG4 are delighted to be the host. Sustainable Media Ireland is a network of media organisations that come together to discuss and share information, consider policy and promote engagement on all aspects of sustainability across Ireland's media sector. SMI members include TG4, RTÉ, Virgin Media Ireland, Screen Ireland, Screen Producers Ireland, Independent Broadcasters of Ireland (IBI), Craol representing national, local and community media commercial and online press, with support from Coimisiún na Meán. The conference will be a day-long experience, featuring talks and panels looking at many aspects of the media in Ireland, all through the prism of sustainability. While this clearly means careful consideration of the environment, it also considers the economic stability and social and cultural impact of our work. Previous SMI events took place in Virgin Media Ireland studios and RTÉ studios. This year's event will feature a look at the contribution Manchán Magan has made to the Irish language, television and our appreciation of the land. Technology innovator Glen Mulcahy looks into what impact AI could have in the not-too-distant future. After a very wet and stormy start to the year, there will also be a discussion on business resilience in the light of increasing extreme weather impact. Rónán Ó Domhnaill, Media Development Commissioner at Coimisiún na Meán said: "Coimisiún na Meán is committed to supporting sustainability best practice across the media sector in Ireland. The annual Sustainable Media Ireland event offers all members the opportunity to network, exchange ideas and develop policy. We are delighted to be heading West and holding the event outside Dublin for the first time. We're always conscious of managing the carbon footprint of the event by choosing timings that are convenient for public transport, which we strongly encourage, and providing vegetarian-only catering options. We're also excited to introduce online streaming for the first time for members unable to travel with international contributors joining us via video link. At a time when extreme weather events are impacting every part of Irish society, we look forward to exploring how media can address the climate crisis in a meaningful way." Deirdre Ní Choistín, Director General TG4: "TG4 are delighted to be hosting our media colleagues for this wonderful event. Sustainability must be at the heart of everything we do as organisations. It will be great to share best practices, hear from inspiring innovators in sustainable production and discuss the challenges we all face while working together to find long-term, viable solutions. Bringing people to Galway also allows us to showcase the best of what is happening here in the production sector in the West and to celebrate the achievements of our wonderfully talented media and creative professionals". The conference takes place on Wednesday, 25th February and is free for SMI members and staff to attend. Tickets are available on Eventbrite here.

International Law in TattersShould we be surprised by the decision of President Trump to kidnap President Nicolas Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores? Should we be shocked by his claim that the US will now administer Venezuela or that US Oil companies will manage Venezuela's huge oil reserves? And what of his threats against Cuba, Colombia, Mexico, Greenland, Nigeria and others? The historical reality is that we have seen all of this before. The most brazen example this century was the invasion of Iraq in 2003, under the pretext of the non-existent weapons of mass destruction. The truth then was that US and British interests were primarily concerned with the control of Iraq's oil. The result was a million Iraqi dead and a region torn apart by the subsequent political instability. International law was flagrantly broken. Torture and a brutal occupation followed. The Fellow in the Big PictureOver the Christmas break I watched more television than I do at any other time. Regular readers will know that I'm more of a radio man. RTE Radio, Raidió na Gaeltachta, Raidió Fáilte, Radio Ulster. I listen to these every day. But I like westerns. And there is always a ton of westerns to be seen on television over the Christmas period. Some are old ones featuring Audie Murphy, Gene Audrey, Alan Ladd, John Wayne, Maureen O Hara and the likes. TG4 usually has a good selection of these. They also show a lot of movies featuring Clint Eastwood. I like his films. And not just the westerns. Although he first came to our attention in Ballymurphy with Rawhide. Unforgiven was the film of choice this Nollaig with Gene Hackman and Morgan Freeman, all in starring roles. And it was followed by Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Irish government should be ashamed2026 began for the people of the Gaza Strip and the Palestinian Occupied Territories with more Israeli attacks by land and sea and air; winter storms that have added to the enormous hardship of people trying to survive in flimsy tents; and the denial of appropriate humanitarian aid.2025 also ended with Israel having killed nearly half of all those journalists killed last year. Reporters Without Borders recorded that 29 reporters were killed by Israeli forces making Israel “the worst enemy of journalists.”
