If, like me, you have found yourself at large conferences wondering where the diversity is, you would have been surprised and delighted to see Shelley Zalis leading groups of like-minded women across the giant trade halls of CES, the esplanades of Cannes Lion or the conference rooms of the World Economic Forum.. Shelley, who built her career in market research, responded to a need for connection, first among women, now among all those seeking greater diversity and inclusion in an organization called The Female Quotient. From its beginnings as an ad hoc networking organization, the group has expanded to take on representation of women in media and mentorship of the next generations of leaders. What started as “The Girls Lounge” has turned into the “Equality Lounge” and now embraces male attendees as well. Before Covid, it was operating as pop ups at 70 major conferences around the world. I sat down with Shelley to talk about her journey. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/rebootchronicles/message

This episode is EXTRA special because it’s our 50th episode, Becoming You Podcast is 5 months old and we just celebrated 55k downloads!! And I couldn’t think of a better guest than the woman you’re about to have the pleasure of hearing from! I was invited to a women’s leadership and inspiration lunch last month at the Hivery, a drool worthy and inspiring co-working space just north of the San Fran golden gate bridge. I realized I’d seen photos of the Hivery, which has been featured in Forbes, Elle, Entrepreneur Magazine, US Today, SF CHronicle and more…...months ago and had been wanting to find an excuse to make the drive north ever since! In person, the Hivery was even more magical and Bee-utiful than it looked online. It’s a place you want to sit down with your laptop and latte and create your next big project or finish that book you’ve been wantin to write.  It’s no wonder their hashtag is #womendoingcoolstuff. And it was no surprise that the co-founder, Grace Kraaijvanger, was the source of all of this creative energy, inspiration and is all about helping women find their hive!. She is delightful! As a former professional dancer turned mom and marketing executive, Grace was searching for a creative community to start her next chapter of life. In 2014, she founded the Hivery, a collaborative and creative co-working space where members can pursue their work, passions and next chapter! The Hivery is a literal and metaphorical space for people to find and create meaningful work outside of a traditional corporate environment. By focusing on our inner being, Grace shares how she’s designed her life by feel, and explains how everything we want is already inside us! In addition to her role as the Founder & CEO of The Hivery, Grace is a motivational speaker, business mentor, and serves on the board of the SF Dance Film Festival and the Nasdaq YEx Advisory Board. She has spoken at high-profile events such as Watermark, The Girls Lounge at Dreamforce, and QuickBooks Connect, in addition to hosting countless Hivery events and gatherings. In the middle of the World Economic Forum at Davos, you may come across an intimate oasis of women who are connecting, doing deals, having a great time, and enjoying a bit of respite from the huge majority of men wandering the town in gray suits. And you’ll see The Girls’ Lounge founder Shelley Zalis enjoying every minute of it. She got the idea for the Girls’ Lounge in 2013 while walking the floor of the Consumer Electronics Show in Vegas. Women were the vast minority there, and she saw them craving a “safe” space to relax from the overly male vibe.
