She says although some sisters can be competitive, hers always had a great relationship where they were different from one another, but supported each other. Like many of us, Shelley's first job didn't bring in a lot of income. What Shelley did get out of her first job was an awesome education in client relationships, marketing, and boots on the ground market research. Shelley had a performance review at her next job at a larger company that changed the course of her life and career forever. She was chastised for being too assertive and essentially doing her job by spending tons of time with clients. This was the impetus for her to leave and pursue the founding of her own business, under her own rules. When starting her company, Shelley could have taken a million dollar investment split equally between her father and husband. She instead took money from statistics company Nielsen, where she gave up a majority of the equity in her business. Back in 2013, Shelley had the opportunity to go to CES, but had no one to go with. So she reached out to a few of her girlfriends to come instead, told them to invite their girlfriends, and when they got there, they were in a group of about 50 women. This turned a lot of heads at a male dominated conference, and thus the idea for The Female Quotient was born.
On this episode of BRAVE COMMERCE, Shelley Zalis, Founder and CEO of The Female Quotient, joins hosts Rachel Tipograph and Sarah Hofstetter to discuss the importance of gender equality and diversity in business.Shelley begins by sharing her personal experiences as one of the two women on a board of 25 men, shedding light on her journey towards founding The Female Quotient. She emphasizes how, rather than waiting for change to happen, she took the initiative to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in the corporate world, even when it was not widely recognized as a priority.Drawing from a pivotal experience where she gathered a group of women at a male-dominated convention, Shelley shares how this moment of collective empowerment became the catalyst for The Female Quotient. She emphasizes how this experience highlighted the power of women working together, challenging the status quo of competition, and promoting a culture of collaboration and shared success. Finally, Zalis concludes with her approach to success, "If you don't fail, you don't succeed", highlighting the importance of embracing failure as a stepping stone to success.Key Takeaways:Waiting for the right time doesn't bring change; it's the initiative and action that doesThe potential for faster change increases when existing norms are actively challengedA decade ago, diversity, equity, and inclusion weren't business priorities. It is always a bad sign if your therapist is discussing the last time they cried right before you arrive, and honestly, right away that should have been a huge red flag to a night zookeeper like Hotch Stevkins. Regardless of what the giraffes may think of him, Ian Herrin is almost always using his clients to get access to free entertainment systems while continuing to aggressively guerilla market his Verizon commercial from 2016. You should be making more human friends, Hotch! It would be helpful for you to not spend all your time under the domain of Jungle law! Flintstone your way out of that office and never look back!!! About This Episode: For Shelley Zalis, being the first to break a pattern is what sets her apart from the rest. As the CEO of The Female Quotient and a champion of equality, she has continuously taken risks to pursue what she believes in. Too often, people get caught up in a pattern or routine, and they never find what they're truly passionate about, but you have to break that pattern in order to find your own rhythm. Shelley emphasizes that if you want change, you have to disrupt the status quo. You won't find what you love by repeatedly doing the same thing. It's important to be the first to break a pattern and create a new norm. This is something that Shelley has done time and time again. She didn't wait for the "right" time, but instead, she made it the right time. And you can make it the right time in your life too- tune in and find out how to break the pattern, find your passion, and make the greatest impact.
