Welcome back listeners! Lucky number thirteen, and it is time for you to hear me speak negatively about a game. Join me and hear about the incredible topic of theme and thematic tie-in. I discuss how a strong theme can make a game remarkable, but can also cast a dark shadow and make you believe a terrible game could possibly be good. Two games spring to mind when I ponder themes used in board games, ARKHAM HORROR 3RD EDITION, a game I adore, and GRIMSLINGERS, a game that left me heartbroken and oh so disappointed. Side note and spoiler alert: watch out for my brief thoughts on the beloved Magic the Gathering. As always, thank you for your support and for listening to each episode. I love you all.
Host Tim Jennette (Metal Meeple), and co-host George Breden are joined by special guest Stephen Gibson, art director of Arcane Wonders! They talk about Stephen's work in the board game industry, as well as tons of board and video games: Grimslingers, Mage Wars, Phasmaphobia, Pacify, Destiny 2, Guild Wars 2, Outriders... ...and much more!
In the eternal words of Apocalypse Now, "The Horror. The Horror." And, in the immortal words of the Terminator, "I know now why you cry. But it's something I can never do." And of course, in the undying words of Jack Dawson, "Promise me, Rose. And never let go of that promise." Today, we understand Halloween and the Day of the Dead a little bit better as we grow more comfortable with the spirit realm. Today, we take a very serious game very seriously. Today, we review This War of Mine. This game is unfair. It's a constant fight for survival and against entropy in a war-torn city. A fight made by unready civilians. It inspires more stories about death than it does about hope. We spar about the caliber of its stories and trials. In what's hopefully brighter speculation, we review the solo games that do not cause us existential dread while playing. Where the movement of chits and pawns does not inspire us to stare out our windows forlornly. These are games that rise above and occupy us fully. Yet somehow we can't even agree on this. Be safe everyone. 04:32 This War of Mine04:47 Signorie & Kingsburg05:04 Nippon05:17 Lost Cities, Can't Stop, Targi, Palaces of Carrara, La Granja06:23 Race for the Galaxy: The Brink of War08:07 Pandemic Iberia09:13 Pandemic: Hot Zone - North America10:55 FEATURE GAME This War of Mine34:51 FEATURE TOPIC Solo Games that Don't Cause Existential Dread38:19 Oh Hell39:59 Underwater Cities, A Feast for Odin, Terraforming Mars, Agricola41:32 Nemo's War42:08 Tainted Grail, Grimslingers, This War of Mine43:26 It's a Wonderful World44:09 Wingspan, Tiny Towns, Welcome To...45:02 Maracaibo, Scythe, Tapestry, Wingspan47:41 Clans of Caledonia48:37 On Mars, Lisboa, Escape Plan, Pandemic, Pandemic Fall of Rome51:00 Tiny Towns53:10 Gloomhaven56:32 A Feast for Odin58:47 Spirit Island01:00:00 Sleeping Gods01:00:32 Gaia Project and Terra Mystica
In the ancient Norse lands, we pillage the coasts, whale the seas, craft hammers and mail, and play tetris on the front lawn of the meade hall. Wait, what? We're talking about A Feast for Odin, Uwe Rosenberg's magnum opus. We run through the best parts of of this game and where it fails. We played it 10 times in two weeks -- King Hrothgar would be proud. Then we talk the Norwegians expansion, which goes down like a smooth glass of meade after the looser plays of vanilla Feast. Guess what though -- the game is basically a patch, and a very good one.Not too far removed, our topic of the day is the multiplicative effect that spatial elements have on tired board game mechanics. Whether it's the lovely tile placement of Feast, the opportunistic avatar map movements of Marco Polo, or the tension of Escape Plan that has a bit of both, spatial elements make some of our favorite games.03:20 A Feast for Odin Review - At Least Ten Times20:35 The Norwegians Expansion - A Review33:26 The Multiplicative Experience of Spatial Elements in Games - Feature Theme34:00 Voyages of Marco Polo34:29 Islebound and Vindication35:18 Tyrants of the Underdark36:00 Supermotherload37:13 Clank41:18 Escape Plan overview -- a Combo of Tile Placement and Avatar Movement46:17 Forum Trajanum49:27 Seafall51:15 Riverboat52:02 Grimslingers
We are happy to be joined this week by Stephen Gibson. He gives us a behind-the-scenes look at the design, development, and multiple iterations of Grimslingers, a card game that has a duel mode as well as a solo-coop adventure card game mode. We thought this would be an interesting discussion, not only to talk about Grimslingers and its new expansion, Northern Territories, but also to address big picture questions about iteration of design, responding to fan feedback, releasing multiple editions, and working with a publisher. Stephen gives his very honest opinions about the whole process. To help us with the show, we have enlisted Wendy Barlow of the Singlehandedly blog. Thanks, Wendy! If you want to check out more content for Grimslingers, especially the latest version of the campaign mode, follow this link: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1609x-kod0y1wdK3SnNeYDdSV8VU7hieAzui2rGXzzCc/edit
Tom and Chris talk Grimslingers, Haru Ichiban, Runewars, and a mash-up of Grease and Avatar the Last Airbender! If that's not enough for you, there's also a contest to win a copy of Runewars for yourself. You owe it to your wallet to listen to this episode.
When you reach episode 75, you can either make a big song and dance. Or you can go one better and get the very talented and all round top person Stephen S Gibson back on the show to chat more about Grimslingers, more about his next projects and just generally more awesomeness.
