I'm not sure why you'd make a hall of fame that's not also a sidewalk, but that's exactly what BoardGameGeek have gone and done - they've curated 25 games into their hall of fame, and we're here to judge them for their choices. It's weird that they didn't come to us first, honestly. I have always felt that the theme or setting of a game can really help with learning it. In a game about the Spice Routes, for example, it will be instinctively clear why there are mechanisms to exchange resources of different types with each other or for money. After all, that's what the spice trade was mainly about. However, a game's theme or setting isn't necessarily useful. Sometimes it can be a hindrance. In this article, I want to look at this a bit more closely. First, we start off with a big announcement. After the announcement, though, we move into our discussion of one of Dylan's favorite games, Terra Mystica. It's filled with halflings, dwarves, elves, witches, and other mystical creatures who are all just trying to carve out a place in this enchanted world. Have you ever played Terra Mystica? What did you think? We'd love to hear your thoughts at innkeeperstablepodcast@gmail.com!

Black Burch grew up in Fort Worth, attending college at TCU. Prior to his current venture, he wasn't actually a tech person. He wanted to be a music professor, specifically in percussion. But eventually, he moved over to the tech world. But, outside of tech, he plays board games, in the strategy realm, and named one that I hadn't heard of called Terra Mystica.Previously at PMG, Blake and his company had built an internal tool called forklift, moving data between data warehouses. As it started to grow, he and his co-founder saw lots of opportunities to expand the offering - and make it a product of its own. This is the creation story of Shipyard.SponsorsDrataCacheFlyClearQueryLinkshttps://www.shipyardapp.com/https://www.linkedin.com/in/blakeburch/Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/code-story/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Maybe you've heard of that hefty game called Gloomhaven, the #1 game on BoardGameGeek for over 5 years. Or its heftier sequel, Frosthaven, the highest-funded gaming project on Kickstarter ever. We're not sure how their designer, Isaac Childres, had time to chat with Going Analog, but we weren't going to pass up the opportunity. We pick his brain on all the -havens, his upcoming plans for the franchise, modern-day crowdfunding, and his love for "dry Euros." Timeline: 4:03 - Shoe's game pick: Familiar Tales. 7:22 - Isaac's game pick: Gaia Project. 13:00 - Christina's game pick: nana. 15:12 - Shoe's topic: the growing Gloomhaven/Frosthaven universe. 26:40 - Isaac's topic: the current state of crowdfunding. 35:19 - Christina's topic: how Isaac's love of "dry Euros" plays into his design philosophy.

As a reviewer, my collection has quite a large turnover. After all, I need to play at least 52 new-to-me games every year, one for each week, to have enough material to write about. I regularly buy new games and I also get a fair amount of review copies. Review copies usually go back to the publisher or are sent to the next reviewer. The games I buy don't always stay in my collection though. I do regularly prune it and get rid of games that I no longer want to keep. However, some games are evergreens for me. They stay in my collection, because I know I'll play them at least ever so often. The Terracotta Army is a collection of terracotta sculptures depicting the armies of Qin Shi Huang, the first emperor of China. It is a form of funerary art buried with the emperor in 210–209 BCE with the purpose of protecting the emperor in his afterlife. The figures, dating from approximately the late third century BCE, were discovered in 1974 by local farmers in Lintong County, outside Xi'an, Shaanxi, China. The figures vary in height according to their roles, the tallest being the generals. The figures include warriors, chariots and horses. Estimates from 2007 were that the three pits containing the Terracotta Army held more than 8,000 soldiers, 130 chariots with 520 horses, and 150 cavalry horses, the majority of which remained buried in the pits near Qin Shi Huang's mausoleum. Also, uh, end-of-round bonuses are cool and change incentives. 00:02:13 Splendor: Duel, Splendor00:03:01 It's a Wonderful World, Race for the Galaxy00:03:18 Skymines, Obsession00:03:47 Frosthaven00:05:54 Harvest, Empyreal: Spells & Steam, Argent: The Consortium00:08:28 FEATURE REVIEW Terracotta Army00:08:37 Origins: First Builders, Nemesis, Lords of Hellas00:09:31 Frostpunk00:10:21 Underwater Cities00:31:38 Bunny Kingdom00:38:09 Tekhenu00:39:07 Verdant00:39:25 FEATURE DISCUSSION End-of-Round Objectives00:43:28 Terra Mystica, Gaia Project, Terra Nova00:46:19 Barrage00:47:33 Wonderland's War00:50:32 THE CONTEST: Win Ark NovaJoin us in the conversation on discord: https://tinyurl.com/2wood4wheatAsk us a question at TwoWoodForAWheat@gmail.comLeave us a review on Apple podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/two-wood-for-a-wheat/id1447901771Read Tony's blog: https://boardgamegeek.com/user/maxlongstreet/blogsThanks to God Street Wine for our intro and outro music: https://www.facebook.com/GodStreetWine/
All too often we can fall into the trap of thinking more in games means better, more content means quality, and miniatures equals fun. What happens when everything meant to make the game better actually makes it harder to get played? This week on the Discussion Phase we have been impressed by the ability of the recent released game Terra Nova and it's ability to take one of the heaviest games in Terra Mystica and streamline it in a way that makes is easier to teach, lighter in difficulty, but still retains the spirit of the game. We take a look a what other larger than life games may benefit from this same model. We also review recent plays of Dogs of War, Boast or Nothing, and more. I think a lot of people in the board game hobby play together for fun and for the social aspect. Sure, many of us want to win the game. We don't play to lose. However, I think only very few people are hugely competitive. Playing board games is more of a hobby. In this article, I look at different ways of improving your game and what it might take to become better at winning. As you probably know by now, I'm a very visual person. I love great illustrations in board games, hence my series "Let me illustrate" highlighting board game artists in the industry. At the same time, a board game with an amazing look alone is not enough. The gameplay needs to be great too and the rules must not be more complicated than necessary for the weight of the game. So in this article, I want to look at how important realistic resources are to me in games. There seems to be a trend lately of massively popular hobbyist games, such as Terraforming Mars, Gloomhaven, and now Terra Mystica, getting a "lite" version of their game made to appeal to a more mass market crowd and likely be on the self of large retailers. This week on the Discussion Phase we look at games we think would benefit from having a streamlined alternative to introduce to new or casual gamers. We also review recent plays of Age of Steam, Dead Reckoning, and Meadow. Make sure to join us on Discord and get in on the discussion with us! https://discord.gg/WKZkT2DDNs
After a purgatorial thirteen months, Mark will be released from his Cain-like wanderings and allowed to repatriate to Kingston where he will get to be home. He figures that if Immanuel Kant got to be world famous before the age of global communications without leaving a 50 kilometer radius of his hometown, he has more than paid his dues. If anyone wants him to attend a function in the future, they had best plan on getting married and/or dying in close proximity to Mark's home.01:43 AYURIS: Lost Ruins of Arnak (Elwen & Mín, CGE, 2020)Games Played Last Week:03:51 -Foundations of Rome (Emerson Matsuuichi, Arcane Wonders, 2022)07:05 -Golem (Flaminia Brasini, Virginio Gigli, & Simone Luciani, Cranio Creations, 2021)10:56 -Token Terrors: Battlegrounds (John de Campos & Phillip Doccolo, Terrible Games, 2020)16:50 -Switch & Signal (David Thompson, KOSMOS, 2020)19:13 -Unsettled (Marc Neidlinger & Tom Mattson, Orange Nebula, 2021)27:09 -Ark Nova (Mathias Wigge, Feuerland Spiele, 2021)28:21 -The Bridges of Shangri-La (Leo Colovini, Uberplay, 2003)32:09 -Merchants of the Dark Road (Brian Suhre, Elf Creek Games, 2022)36:09 -Paper Tales (Masato Uesugi, Stronghold, 2017)38:31 -Memoir '44 (Richard Borg, Days of Wonder, 2004)41:52 -Iwari (Michael Schacht, ThunderGlyph Games, 2020)News (and why it doesn't matter):44:51 Ghost Adventure: spinning, grabbing, tilting! 45:57 Uwe Rosenberg's Atiwa (Ghana)47:42 Idavoll for Nidavellir: giants, Aesir, and more49:33 Terra Mystica minus tracks becomes Terra Nova?50:24 Terraforming Mars: Dice Game

It's been a week, and this episode is late. Kiwi apologizes. He'd like to say it will never happen again, but let's be honest. It will. Insert your own funny title here and let us know what you picked! This week you can join Eric and Kait as they play Terra Mystica, designed by Jens Drögemüller and Helge Ostertag. Until next week, play more games!
It's a new season on The GamerNode Show, from Eddie Inzauto! Episode 89 kicks off my "Game Shelf Survey" (feel free to suggest a better name), a series in which I'll be dedicating each episode to a single cube in my board game shelving unit, and talking about the games residing therein. This will give listeners a chance to peek behind the curtain and into my game library to get a sense of which games have earned their place in my home and for what reasons. Have a listen and see how well our tastes align! In this first part of the GSS, we'll dive into a really great set of games: Ex Libris, SpaceCorp: 2025-2300AD, Terra Mystica, and Underwater Cities. As always, feel free to drop me a line and comment with your thoughts on Twitter or Instagram, or via the voice message link on the show's Anchor page! Versus Node theme, "Dungeon" by Koji Kondo for Nintendo's The Legend of Zelda, 1987, remixed by Brian Schulman and Charles Kantz, 2010. And as mentioned at the end of the show, I've launched a new retro video games podcast, in a sort of book club format, covering one game per episode. Here's a full description of Smashing Bricks: A Retro Gaming Podcast: "Smashing Bricks is a retro gaming podcast in which aging gamers look back on games from 10 or more years ago (usually closer to 30), with each episode typically following a full replay of one spotlighted game. Host Eddie Inzauto and guests discuss the newfound appreciation—or perhaps disillusionment—resulting from these book-club-style revisitations. Crank the nostalgia dial up to 10 and get ready to start...Smashing Bricks!"
