For 40 years, sculptor M.J. Anderson has been making annual trips from her home on the Oregon coast to Carrara, Italy. She spends up to three months there, traveling along a winding road to quarries with towering walls of marble, the same kind of stone that was used to create Michelangelo’s sculpture of David and other timeless works of Renaissance art. But Anderson isn’t interested in recreating classical, idealized representations of masculine or feminine beauty. Instead, a unifying theme of Anderson’s work is “the distillation of what it feels like to be woman.” Starting at her studio in Carrara, she uses grinders and air hammers to carve torsos evoking the female form out of massive blocks of marble, onyx and travertine. The pieces are then shipped, unfinished, to Anderson’s studio in Nehalem where she polishes them while retaining drill marks and other raw reminders of the stone’s past and its “power.” We talked with Anderson on Sep. 13, 2025 about her artistic process and the themes she explores in her work.

Born in Rome, but now living in Versilia, Giannelli is probably best known for his giant sculpture, Mr Arbitrium, over five metres tall, which appears to be either pushing away or supporting the buildings it stands against - depending on the viewers' point of view. This ambiguity turns us as viewers into the protagonists, challenging our beliefs about the meaning of these structures and our connection to them. Versions of Mister Arbitrium have been installed against buildings and churches in Milan, Florence, Lucca, Servezza, Carrara, Pietrasanta and even Ukraine. Giannelli welcomes Mike on the lawn of the family estate, where his series of bronze sculptures I Sospesi hang from the trees, and a friendly black labrador lies on the grass. Emanuele came to Carrara at nineteen to study sculpture at the Carrara Academy of Fine Arts, settling here in Versilia, where his family had lived in previous generations. At the Academy he chose to work in clay rather than marble, due to the flexibility it offers and the nature of his work being more conceptual. Giannelli tells Mike how in his youth he spent time in New York, London and Berlin and was influenced by science fiction, cinema, graffiti, electronic music, and punk rock. Eventually he returned to Pietrasanta which was more conducive to raising a family. He recalls the joy of meeting artisans and visiting the workshops which were then in the centre of Pietrasanta. And he also enjoyed the parties and social life with lots of young people, especially foreigners, Germans, French, and Americans. The Watcher is a sculpture who looks up with binoculars at the sky, which is something humans have always done. However now, through technology, he is trying to look beyond. Emanuele says that ‘beyond' also makes him think of spirituality. Another work he mentions with a visionary theme is Korf, a man who stands watching on his monitor, arms crossed, gaze turned upwards, searching for his vision and his future. Emanuele says although he doesn't believe in a code called religion, he believes very much in human beings. He says that although we are animals, and have a sense of self-destruction, we are extraordinary animals. His works are pitched between figurative and conceptual, reflecting on the contemporary period of incredibly fast-moving change.emanuelegiannelli.itinstagram.com/emanuele.giannelli
Today we're heading to the Tuscan coast - to the chic seaside town of Forte dei Marmi, where marble mountains meet golden beaches and life revolves around la dolce far niente - the sweet art of doing nothing. My guest today is my friend, Salvatore Madonna, owner of the beautiful Hotel Byron. Salvatore grew up here and believes true luxury is rooted in authenticity - in people, place, and the effortless rhythm of Italian life. We chat about everything from the vintage vibe of Forte dei Marmi to the easy pace of nearby Lucca. And of course Carrara - where marble from this small corner of Tuscany has brought beauty to the world, a fitting legacy from a place where beauty is simply a way of life. It's been quite a while since we've sat down for an episode of the Roar Deal in full doom & gloom mode, but Saturday's crisis in Carrara has us not too far from that ballpark. It was our heaviest defeat since the 2022 Prelim Final loss to a red-hot Geelong side, and also our heaviest home & away defeat we've had since 2018. It's also put Dom in a real mood this week on the podcast, with Mike doing his best to lift Dom out of the slump ahead of a season-shaping game against Collingwood this Saturday. Also this week:-Why Dom feels so much resentment to Damien Hardwick-Is Murray Davis a senior coach in waiting?-The worst footy-related birthday celebration of all timeAnd much more!
fWotD Episode 3007: Gaetano Bresci Welcome to featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia's finest articles. The featured article for Tuesday, 29 July 2025, is Gaetano Bresci.Gaetano Bresci (Italian: [ɡaeˈtaːno ˈbreʃʃi]; 11 November 1869 – 22 May 1901) was an Italian anarchist who assassinated King Umberto I of Italy. As a young weaver, his experiences with exploitation in the workplace drew him to anarchism. Bresci emigrated to the United States, where he became involved with other Italian immigrant anarchists in Paterson, New Jersey. News of the Bava Beccaris massacre motivated him to return to Italy, where he planned to assassinate Umberto. Local police knew of his return but did not mobilize. Bresci killed the king in July 1900 during Umberto's scheduled appearance in Monza amid a sparse police presence. The government of Italy suspected that Bresci had been a part of a conspiracy but no evidence was found to indicate that others were involved. He was consequently sentenced to life imprisonment for murder and confined on Santo Stefano Island in Latina, Lazio, where he was found dead of an apparent suicide within the year. After his death, Bresci gained the status of a martyr within the Italian anarchist movement, who defended his regicidal act. Bresci inspired some anarchists to carry out their own acts of propaganda by deed, most prominently Leon Czolgosz's assassination of United States president William McKinley. Italian anarchists erected a monument to Bresci in Carrara despite governmental attempts to block it.This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:21 UTC on Tuesday, 29 July 2025.For the full current version of the article, see Gaetano Bresci on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm neural Gregory.

For decades, prolific Cuban spies working in the U.S. government, serving in high profile positions with top security clearances, have evaded American intelligence officials. Correspondent Cecilia Vega reports from Washington, D.C. and Miami on the stories of two such undercover agents, former U.S. Ambassador Victor Manuel Rocha and onetime Pentagon official Ana Montes. Cuba continues to supply one of the most dangerous exports to American adversaries around the world: American secrets. For centuries, the giants of the art world, like Michelangelo, have made a beeline for the world-famous Carrara marble quarries of Northern Tuscany, turning the white stone into masterpieces. Now, a fleet of robots has moved in, carving with pinpoint precision and sparking an art world fracas. Correspondent Bill Whitaker travels to Carrara and jumps into the fray: can a robot make art? While many contemporary A-listers are turning to robots for help, many of Italy's hammer-and-chisel brigade are up in arms. They claim Italy's artistic heritage is on the line. Many teenagers want to become pop stars, but few convince their parents to let them pack their bags and move to another country to make it big. That's precisely what Dua Lipa did when she was 15 years old, trading Pristina, Kosovo, for London. Correspondent Anderson Cooper talks with her about her journey from unknown songwriter to international sensation.
courtesy of Ruiz-Healy Art, New York / San Antonio Nicolás Leiva is renowned for his exuberant sculptures and paintings that capture various expressive personal visions. Vessels, boats, abstract forms, flying carriages are transformed into ceramics in an explosion of lush primary colors embossed with metals like silver and gold. Animals and vegetables commingle in a garden of flowers amidst otherworldly places of shelter, are replicated as box-like reliquaries, and plate-like medallions in miniature close-up show territories transitioned from his works on paper. His imaginative world unfolds in infinite realms like a Möbius strip. Highly gestural, organic, or geometric, Leiva presents a host of archetypes in his emblems of flight, safety, and delight. Born in 1958 in Tucumán, Argentina, Leiva graduated from the Fine Arts School of the Universidad Nacional de Tucumán. He continued his studies in Buenos Aires and moved to Miami in 1990. In 1996, he extended his practice to sculpture and ceramics. He lives part-time in Faenza, Italy, where he works with a variety of materials at the workshops of Ceramica Gatti. His work is the subject of the 2005 monograph Nicolas Leiva: The Fire of Self and Multiplication with scholarly text by Ricardo Pau-Llosa and Mariza Vescovo published by Bandecchi & Vivaldi in Italy. He has had many important solo and group exhibitions in the US and internationally, notably his 2023 solo exhibition, Historia de un día, Museo de Bellas Artes Laureano Brizuela, Catamarca, Argentina. See pictures and read more on materiallyspeaking.comDutch artist Anne-Claire trained and worked as a lawyer until she followed her heart to become an artist. She moved to Pietrasanta, where she lived, and worked, for 15 years. Now she divides her time between the Hague and Pietrasanta. After the pandemic she was looking for a way to capture peoples' thoughts and emotions in order to make a three-dimensional sculpture of them in clay. Having discovered that a traditional scanner was unable to grab the emotion she saw in a split second, Anne-Claire was happy to meet Claudio Giustiniani of ArtaxLab in Pietrasanta, who showed her how he used 30 Nikon cameras in conjunction with a 3-D printer. Working with Claudio she could get what she wanted and began her project to capture the emotions around the experience of COVID-19 called My Collection of Souls. To create her My Collection of Souls Anne-Claire talked to the person about COVID-19 and, at the exact moment she saw their strongest expression, she pressed the button on the cameras. Claudio and she discuss in this episode how they created the work - from taking the photograph through to the finished collection.Another collaboration Anne-Claire made was with photographer Gail Skoff.Gail came to this part of Italy in 2017 to photograph the quarries of Carrara but soon became fascinated by the artists working in marble. When she met Anne-Claire they instantly clicked, and embarked on a collaboration with Gail's photographic collage technique. Gail likes to enter the world of the artist and elaborate on their process, creating more of an impression of the artist's work rather than its ultimate reality.Anne-Claire tells us how it was working with Gail and how happy she was to have Icarus flying. From her childhood, Anne-Claire was inspired by how Michelangelo expressed such soft emotions in hard marble. Below is a piece in tribute to him. Usama's studio space, and home, is tucked away in the shadow of the statuario marble quarries. Usama bought the space in this historic marble area because he felt an urgency to build a stone amphitheatre there. Initially he dismissed the land because he feared flooding. But he worked non-stop his first winter to build his theatre. He tells us about his childhood and how it informed the person he's become. His uncles are both sculptors and their books on marble, in his grandmother's library, inspired him from a young age. First he studied art in Damascus, where he carved in wood, and then he came to Carrara to study sculpting in marble. Usama talks about his relationship with nature and his love of plants. He grew up in Syria with a family garden of fruit and vegetables, and always loved working in nature. He has planted many trees and plants in his Carrara home. Many of Usama's pieces are inspired by immigration There's a wall of marble blocks sculpted with luggage handles, straps and zips. He tells how immigrants who used to carry lots of luggage now find their luggage has become much smaller, sometimes even just a mobile phone.Usama created a series of sculptures of women depicting the life of women in the Middle East and their freedom to travel around. His sculptures explore how women have sometimes been transformed by religion into more of an icon than a person, and how this can also become a prison. However, they often find virtual freedom through the internet. This piece is a woman on one side and on the other side a horse, her hair represents an extension of her thoughts.Usama loves teaching and sharing his skills whilst allowing his students to develop their own personalities in their work.alnassar.itinstagram.com/alnassarsculpture
See pictures and read more on materiallyspeaking.comSandy first came to Italy to be with her partner, the sculptor John Fisher, and enjoyed the influences of the Italian Renaissance, and the detailed work of the Baroque. From observing the sculptors she learned about shadow and light, negative shape and profile lines. However, she was offered a three month artist residency in a paper making village in Japan where she discovered an economy of stroke and a muted palette which inspired her to develop her work with paper.Gail and I met Sandy at Pescarella studios, in Vallechia, on the road from Pietrasanta towards Carrara. As we entered the large studio space, Sandy was calmly taping collages onto the wall, for a pop-up exhibition she was staging. Her beautiful collages feature fruits, wine bottles and inviting cups of cappuccino - with froth you can almost taste. There's a three dimensional effect on wooden spoons that she has created with papers of different shades. On another work a tower of coffee cups leans so precariously I want to reach out and save them.Beside Sandy there's a table heaped with fine, plain and patterned, papers carefully arranged by colour. She shows us some samples of the paper and talks about how they are made and tells us about her techniques.Sandy speaks about an ongoing series of womens' portraits called Women in the World. In this project she aims to honour and recognise struggles and successes of notable women who have made a special contribution to the world. This life-long series includes visual artists, actors, musicians, scientists and political activists. On her birthday Sandy does a collage self-portrait to reflect on the year behind and the one ahead. She talks about her childhood and the words of wisdom she took from her father who escaped Germany in WW2 and came to America.sandyoppenheimercollage.cominstagram.com/sandyoppenheimer

Days after President-elect Donald Trump won the election by moving nearly every county in the country towards the right, Scott Pelley travels to Northampton County, Pennsylvania to report on the shift. It's the state's bellwether county, which voted for nearly every president in the last century including President Biden in 2020 and President Trump last week. Why did Northampton flip this election cycle? Pelley speaks with longtime residents to find out.CBS News senior foreign correspondent Holly Williams turns the lens on a fellow war reporter on the frontline of the Russia-Ukraine war. She travels to Kharkiv to meet the fearless Andriy Tsaplienko, a Ukrainian journalist who is using his reporting to fight for his country's survival. As Williams discovers, Tsaplienko's relentless search for the facts serves as a powerful weapon to counter disinformation and propaganda. His battle to reveal the truth underscores the critical role journalists play in actively shaping the outcome of global crises where information is a battlefield. For centuries, the giants of the art world, like Michelangelo, have made a beeline for the world-famous Carrara marble quarries of Northern Tuscany, turning the white stone into marble masterpieces. They claim Italy's artistic heritage is on the line.Correspondent Cecilia Vega reports from Spain on the unsolved shooting of a Russian defector in the seaside town of Villajoyosa. It's part of a pattern of recent falls from top floor windows, poisonings and accidental deaths of a growing number of enemies of Russian President Vladimir Putin. Vega investigates the suspected links to Russian intelligence services and examines how European governments are responding to Russian aggression on Western soil. Finally, she asks U.S. Intelligence officials whether Putin's "War on the West" has reached U.S. territory.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Tonight, my special guest is author Rebecca Pittman who's here to discuss her book about the reported hauntings at The Myrtles Plantation. Get the book for your collection. Welcome back to the haunted hallways of the Myrtles Plantation, in St. Francisville, Louisiana. Named The Most-Haunted Home in America, this 220-year-old antebellum plantation plays host to guests from around the world...and "other worlds." Her moss-laden trees have witnessed it all--from murders to voodoo, pirates to poison, slavery and the Civil War.With new photos, history, and today's ghost stories, this 2nd Edition issue will invite you to peek through her upside-down keyholes and discover the secrets of the Myrtles Plantation. More on the Myrtles Plantation: Sited on a hill, the eastward-facing frame house, which features a clapboard exterior, is built in the Creole cottage style that characterized many Louisiana plantation houses in the 19th century. The original house was built in 1796 and featured six bays and three dormers on the roof. In the mid-1850s, the one-and-a-half-story house was extended south, almost doubling its size, and increased to nine bays including a new double door entrance. The entry doors are surrounded with a transom and sidelights, showcasing original hand-painted stained glass, etched and patterned after the French cross to allegedly ward off evil. The main feature of the Myrtles is the 125-foot-long veranda that extends the entire length of the façade, and wraps around the southern end of the house. The ornamental cast-iron railing, with an elaborate grape-cluster design, supports a broad Doric entablature, and on the gabled roof, with six brick chimneys, are two large double-paned, pedimented dormers with Doric style pilasters, interspersed with three single-paned dormers. When the original roof of the house was extended to encompass the new addition, the existing dormers were copied to maintain a smooth line. The west facing rear façade features a central, open loggia that is enclosed on three sides by the house, and on the roof are five pedimented dormers identical to the front. The Myrtles has 22 rooms spread over two floors. The spacious entry hall runs the length of the house and features faux-bois, open pierced friezework molding, a French Baccarat crystal chandelier weighing more than 300 pounds and a cantilevered staircase. The flooring and most of the windows in the house are original. To the left of the hall is the music room that is adjacent to the only bedroom found on the first floor. The principal rooms of the house are found to the right of the hall. The walls of the original house were removed and repositioned to create four large rooms that were used as identical ladies and gentlemen's parlors, a formal dining room and a game room. The two parlors feature Carrara marble mantles in the Rococo Revival-style on the north and south walls, and are crowned with elaborate plaster cornices and ceiling medallions, made from a mixture of clay, Spanish moss and cattle hair, with no two being the same. The second floor features five bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms. The largest bedroom, known as the Judge Clarke Woodruff Suite, is the only room that is accessed by the main staircase in the entry hall. The remaining four bedrooms, that are separated by a common sitting room, are accessed by a staircase that ascends from the rear loggia. The floor of these bedrooms were raised one foot when the house was renovated, as the addition had higher ceilings than the original house.Follow Our Other ShowsFollow UFO WitnessesFollow Crime Watch WeeklyFollow Paranormal FearsFollow Seven: Disturbing Chronicle StoriesJoin our Patreon for ad-free listening and more bonus content.Follow us on Instagram @mysteriousradioFollow us on TikTok mysteriousradioTikTok Follow us on Twitter @mysteriousradio Follow us on Pinterest pinterest.com/mysteriousradio Like us on Facebook Facebook.com/mysteriousradio
