Tristen's list is exclusively movies that came out in 2024 and Max's follows everything he saw for the first time, but in their grand return in a majestic episode (approximately one half of The Brutalist), the jokes are rolling, criticism is flying, and praise is abundant for some fantastic films with much more to come.

With a focus on Patient Focused Drug Development (PFDD), many pharma companies have begun incorporating patient insights into protocols, recruitment strategies, and brand messaging, yet many efforts miss the mark. In this episode, I chat with with Kirsten York, an industry expert with over 25 years of experience. Kirsten is passionate about helping teams identify and overcome entrenched beliefs that can get in the way of creating trust and building authentic connections. Kirsten shares the importance of creating meaningful patient journeys and shares how the standard "cookie-cutter" approach does not work. We discuss what it really takes to build a “patient odyssey”—an approach that goes far beyond the typical patient journey methodology. Kirsten shares how she gathers insights straight from patients' voices on social media, discussion groups, and advocacy platforms to create journeys that actually resonate. She also explains why these journeys need to evolve over time and should be used to inform every aspect of drug development- from molecule to market. If you're curious about how pharma can lead with empathy and build more authentic connections with patients, this episode is for you! Kirsten's Bio: Kirsten York is the Executive Vice President of Human Experience Strategy at ENTRADA. As a Patient Experience Organization, or PXO, ENTRADA is driven to reimagine the way patients interact with pharmaceutical companies throughout their treatment journey.   With over 30 years of experience in pharmaceutical, biotech, and device brand strategy and communication, Kirsten has developed deep expertise for impacting the human experience across the life sciences industry, with particular emphasis in oncology and rare disease.   Kirsten possesses a deep passion for brokering the intersection between patients/caregivers and pharma and is committed to helping people feel more in control of their health journey than ever before. Whether a product is in early development or has been on the market for years, Kirsten is able to identify opportunities for intervention and innovation that can transform the way people experience their health odyssey.   Kirsten specializes in Patient-Focused Strategy, Patient Positioning, meaningful Advocacy Partnerships, Lexicon & Data Visualization, and uncovering powerful patient insights than result in brand transformation. Dcn. Garlick and Adam Minihan are joined by Dr. Pavlos Papadopoulos of Wyoming Catholic College to discuss BOOK THIRTEEN of the Odyssey. Check out thegreatbookspodcast.com for more. From our guide: 73. What happens in book thirteen?King Alcinous makes good on his promise and sends Odysseus back to Ithaca (13.108). Odysseus sleeps the whole way home (13.91), and the Phaeacians lay a sleeping Odysseus on the beach and leave (13.133). Poseidon, meanwhile, convinces Zeus to punish the Phaeacians for their hospitality and aid of Odysseus (13.142). Back in Ithaca, Odysseus awakes and fears he's been hoodwinked by the Phaeacians and must now suffer yet another unknown island (13.227). Athena, under the guise of a shepherd boy, tells Odysseys he's on Ithaca (13.252), and he spins for her some grand tale regarding his background (13.290). Athena reveals herself, and she and Odysseus enjoy a warm conversation about her role in bringing him back to his home (13.329). She helps him hide his treasure in a cave (13.412), and then they sit to plot the death of the suitors (13.429). The book ends with Athena telling Odysseus to go to his loyal servant, the swineherd, and she leaves for Sparta to call Telemachus home (13.449). 74. Why are the Phaeacians punished?Poseidon tells Zeus that the Phaeacians helping Odysseus is a sign of disrespect, and that the Phaeacians should be punished (13.142). Zeus says they are in Poseidon's power, and Poseidon plans to destroy the ship that brought Odysseus home and “pile a huge mountain” around the Phaeacian port (13.166). Zeus suggests that Poseidon wait to destroy the ship in front of the Phaeacian people (13.174), and Poseidon does just this (13.181). The Phaeacians, in turn, recall the prophecy that one day Poseidon would be angry with them for escorting men home across the sea (13.194). Homer leaves the narrative untold with King Alcinous leading his people in sacrifices to Poseidon to hopefully avoid the mountain being placed on their port (13.207).Why does Zeus, who oversees guest-friendship, allow the Phaeacians to be punished for helping Odysseus? It should be recalled the Phaeacians are close to Poseidon, as both King Alcinous and Queen Arete are his descendants. Moreover, it should be noted that King Alcinous and the Phaeacians continued to abide by guest-friendship and assist strangers who landed on their island even when they knew about the prophecy—which may inform why King Alcinous was originally hesitant to assist Odysseus when he first fell at the knees of Queen Arete. Zeus' suggestion that the ship be destroyed in view of the Phaeacians may be seen as an opportunity for pity and reconciliation, as it allows the Phaeacians to understand what is happening and make sacrifices to Poseidon.Check out more: thegreatbookspodcast.com

It's no longer Kubrick Month because we're late recording and uploading this and P4, but regardless, we're here to complete our Kubrickian Odysseys!   Dhruv, Amartya, and Hemant have spent the entirety of July (and will now spend the last week of August and the first week of September) revisiting and discussing 10 (of 13) Kubrick-directed films (the Horror and Noir films will be discussed in October and November, respectively!) plus one conceptualized and obsessed over by him but eventually directed by his dear friend, Steven Spielberg.   In Part 3 (of 4), we focus on three of Kubrick's most overtly provocative films whose controversial nature and treatment continue to inspire heated discussions.   The least of it, perhaps, centers around “Lolita” (1962). Which is a shame, really, because Kubrick's formal and tonal command – partly necessitated by the still-strong presence of Hollywood's Production Code – remains masterful in it: he makes the triggering central conceit of hebephilia (strong sexual interest shown by adults in pubescent children who are early in their adolescence) consistently discomforting even when disguising it within the conventions of seemingly charming romantic comedy.   The opposite may be true in the case of “A Clockwork Orange” (1971) – undoubtedly the director's most aggressively controversial and confrontational film both in terms of its content and treatment. Its anger towards the individual's brand of ultraviolence and sexual deviance is outmatched by its contempt towards forced social conditioning that destroys the individual's free will without ever actually reforming him. Kubrick – unsurprisingly – places us somewhere in between these two modes – at times, troublingly embodying the individual's POV and other times distancing us from it, making “A Clockwork Orange” what it is – an irresolvable film of conflict that offers NO solutions.   Which is THE problem with “Eyes Wide Shut.” Well, for Amartya and, to an extent, Dhruv. They both find the film incredibly well made but tiresome in its provocative but incredibly prolonged dissection of a marriage, and especially a man's supposedly certain perception of his wife's “pure” role within it. Hemant tries to counter that – but much like Tom Cruise in the film itself – retreats, perhaps, because his wife (thank you, Aarti!) also concurs with us.   Listen to the full episode to hear talk in detail about all three of these films and end by debating the controversial ranking of our favorite Kubrick films!   TIME CODES   Intro: [00:00 - 17:02] “Lolita” (1962): [17:02 - 57:25] "A Clockwork Orange" (1971) : [57:25 - 01:36:39] "Eyes Wide Shut" (1999) : [01:36:39 - 02:14:51] Outro: [02:14:51 - 02:28:16] AUDIO EXCERPTS 1. Tis' Kubrick Month! Dhruv, Amartya, and Hemant will spend the entirety of July revisiting and discussing 10 (of 13) Kubrick-directed films (the Horror and Noir films will be discussed in October and November, respectively!) plus 1 conceptualized and obsessed over by him but eventually directed by his dear friend, Steven Spielberg. In Part 1 (of 4), we focus entirely on the one genre he repeatedly returned to throughout his career—the War Film. This allows us to begin with "Fear and Desire" (1952), the feature-length debut that he outright disowns. Understandably, too -- because it only occasionally hints at his incredibly accomplished directorial (in particular, cinematographic) abilities. Then, we move on to his three extremely accomplished films covering three different periods of war. The ray of humanity (and morality) in "Paths of Glory" (1957), set during WWI, is nowhere to be seen when we get to the absurdly crude (but horrifyingly prescient) comedy of the Cold War in "Dr. Strangelove" (1964) and the even cruder cruelty of the Vietnam War in "Full Metal Jacket" (1987). Is this shift towards irony, detachment, and amorality resulting from him increasingly becoming untethered to the studio system? Is it because the wars themselves encouraged its pawns and players to embody these attitudes? Listen to the full episode to hear us ask and then try and answer these questions whilst also situating each of these films within the context of other war films around the same subject matter. Or just listen to the full episode to discover how we connect Stanley Kubrick to Salman Khan! To celebrate DNA Day we are releasing our April episode exploring concepts related to the diagnostic odyssey, whole genome sequencing, and results returned.    Segment 1: A Journey of Hope and Resilience   In our first segment, we delve into the research conducted by Celine Lewis, focusing on the emotional impact of receiving a "no primary finding" (NPF) result from genome sequencing. This recent JoGC paper is titled, “The disequilibrium of hope: A grounded theory analysis of parents' experiences of receiving a “no primary finding” result from genome sequencing.”   Celine's study uncovers the multifaceted journey of parents grappling with the absence of a definitive diagnosis for their children. Through grounded theory analysis, two primary themes emerge: "Striving to Solve the Unsolved Puzzle" and "Navigating Hope, Lost then Found." These themes encapsulate the oscillating emotions of hope, disappointment, and resilience experienced by parents amidst the diagnostic odyssey.   Dr. Celine Lewis is a behavioural scientist working in the field of genetic and genomic medicine. She is currently at University College London Institute of Child Health, and is an NIHR Advanced Fellow. Her work focuses on how patients and families relate to, communicate and make decisions around personal genetic information, and the subsequent behavioural, psychological and social outcomes.    Through her research, Celine has worked with a range of key stakeholders including researchers in the UK and abroad, healthcare professionals and policy makers as well as voluntary organisations, patients and families. She is regularly invited to present at UK and international conferences and meetings and is increasingly asked to present her research findings to organisations such as NHS England and the Department of Health.   Key Insights from Segment 1: - The importance of understanding the emotional dimensions of genetic testing, especially for families receiving inconclusive results. - The dynamic role of hope as both a motivator and a coping mechanism throughout the diagnostic journey. - Suggestions for pre and post-test counseling strategies to support families navigating genomic testing, emphasizing the significance of managing expectations and fostering adaptive hope.   Segment 2: Systematic Review of Secondary Findings   In our second segment, we explore a systematic review conducted by Lucas Mitchell and Dr. Amanda Willis, focusing on the uptake and outcomes of returning secondary findings to research participants. This recent JoGC article is titled, “Systematic review of the uptake and outcomes from returning secondary findings to adult participants in research genomic testing.”   Through rigorous analysis of existing literature, Lucas and Amanda illuminate key insights into the prevalence of secondary findings and their psychological, medical, and ethical implications. Their review underscores the critical role of researchers in navigating the complexities of result return, highlighting considerations for enhancing participant engagement and support.   Lucas Mitchell is a research genetic counsellor at the Garvan Institute of Medical Research in Sydney, Australia. He contributes to the My Research Results genetic counselling platform, an evidence-based service that supports researchers in delivering actionable research genomic findings to participants nationwide. With a Master of Genetic Counselling from the University of Technology Sydney, Lucas is passionate about helping participants and their families in understanding their research findings and facilitating access to ongoing support. Lucas's current research interests lie within the application of genomics and returning secondary findings, and the intersection of genetic healthcare with diverse communities and improving inclusion and accessibility.   Dr. Amanda Willis is a research genetic counsellor at the Garvan Institute of Medical Research. After completing a Master of Genetic Counselling in 2013, Amanda worked as a cancer genetic counsellor in Australia and the UK and completed a PhD in 2018. Amanda's current work is centred around the My Research Results program, developed to help research participants access their genetic information. Amanda provides genetic counselling to research participants who receive a genetic result and conducts research to understand the experiences of these participants. Through this work, she aims to increase access to genomic information and improve outcomes for research participants and their families.   Key Insights from Segment 2: - The significance of secondary findings in research genomic testing and the need for comprehensive strategies to address participant needs. - Key findings regarding the uptake of secondary findings and diverse outcomes experienced by research participants. - Implications for researchers, healthcare providers, and policymakers in optimizing result return processes and promoting participant well-being.   As we conclude our exploration, it becomes evident that genetic testing transcends the realm of science, delving deep into the intricacies of human emotions and resilience. Through the insightful research of our guests, we gain valuable insights into the lived experiences of individuals navigating genetic testing, offering a glimpse into the profound impact of hope, disappointment, and adaptive coping mechanisms.    Stay tuned for the next new episode of DNA Dialogues! In our modern, technologically sophisticated world, it is something of a wonder that a medium such as the podcast continues to thrive. When podcasts first began to emerge in the new era of mini audio devices known as iPods (which speaks, of course, to the origin of the name), many saw them as a nostalgic throwback to the era of radio plays, before even the advent of television. The fact that the podcast medium continues to hold its own, even well into the 2020s, suggests there is something deeply enduring about the experience of tuning into real human voices, in order to feel an authentic human connection. For me personally, it has been a profoundly rewarding experience to build that connection with a dedicated podcast audience that feels very much like a kind of extended family; a tribe, if you will. And as we make note of this, the 100th episode of Point of Convergence, I think it bears pausing for a moment to celebrate not only this milestone in the life of the podcast, but also the human journey we all share, one that draws each of us to this mysterious collection of topics centered around anomalous - and therefore extraordinary - experience. Truth be told, what you have primarily witnessed over these many episodes is my own indulgence of curiosity. For it is primarily questions, rather than answers, that have driven this quest; one centered around both hard and incontrovertible data,  but also an intuitive sense that the world we are all a part of is made up of so much more than what we've been led to believe in our conventional, reductionistically materialist society. To mark this turning over into the triple digits, I plan to make this episode partly a retrospective of sorts, one in which I take some time to look back at the meandering – but also synchronistically orchestrated – path that has brought us here to episode 100. What lessons have been learned along the way in exploring the so-called UFO Phenomenon and related topics? And how might some additional but associated notions – such as that of a hologram, or a “holomovement”, which we'll delve into today – help shed further light not just on the anomalous, but also on the ultimate nature of reality itself? These are the particular questions we'll seek to indulge in this, the 100th episode of the Point of Convergence podcast.

Homer (c. 8th cen - c. 8th cen)Translated by George Chapman (c. 1559 - 1634) The Odysseys are a collection of stories about Ulysses' journey home from the war at Troy purportedly written in the 8th century BCE by Homer, a blind poet thought to have lived in the Greek colonies in Asia Minor, possibly at Smyrna. The events described are thought to have occurred centuries before being recorded by Homer, handed down orally since the twelfth century BCE, the golden era of the Greek Bronze Age when the world was populated by heroic mortals and often visited by the Gods. This verse translation in couplets by George Chapman was originally published in 1616, the first translation from the ancient Greek directly to English, although likely influenced by previous Latin translations. Chapman's translation has been admired by many, including John Keats and others. Many of these stories are familiar to us, Ulysses and the Sirens, Circe turning his crew to swine, their escape from the Cyclops on the bellies of his sheep, but Chapman's version includes violent episodes and suggestive innuendo that I don't recall from my childhood days. My Body Odyssey rode along the 20th Annual Maine Lighthouse Ride this year, interviewing 4 protagonists who faced steep uphill challenges to even get to the starting line of this scenic ride. Rebecca, a yoga teacher in her early sixties, has missed the event the past few years- first, due to a recurrence of endometrial cancer, then COVID, and then work obligations. She counts three challenges in completing this year's one hundred mile route.  “One is torn ligaments in my knee,” she told us, “ and one is that almost exactly two years ago today, I had my last chemotherapy treatment. And in the mix, I manage the energy of depression.” Profiled in a previous episode, Larry is a Stage IV prostate cancer survivor taking on the 40-mile distance despite finishing chemotherapy three months ago and sustaining a training ride fall two days before the event. “I was just gonna have a small ride and I fell off my bike onto a set of railroad tracks,” Larry explains. “The doctor said… I'll give you a 20, 30% chance of riding. So I may not do the full 40 miles.” Also taking on the 40-mile ride is New Hampshire resident Jim, an engineering PhD who became partially paralyzed from a mountain biking accident twelve years ago. Nevertheless, getting back onto a bike -or a more stable three wheeled trike- became one of the major goals of his long rehab process.  “I have to concentrate really hard when I ride,” says Jim, who propels the substantial weight of his “trike” with only good leg. “So it's also done a lot for my focus.” Eric, a Portland resident in his early thirties, had a serious hiking accident one year ago that required surgical attachment of a quad muscle as well as a rotator cuff repair. That put him in a downward spiral, both financially and behaviorally. Yet, he's taking on the 62-mile ride today after gradually escalating his training mileage the past few months.  “I think it all saved me when I found the right athletic trainer that was able to work on my injuries,” he recounts. “She encouraged me to get help on my mental health issues I was battling... And then over a few months, I started getting more confident.” Over 800 riders at this year's Maine Lighthouse Ride, which benefits completion of the Eastern Trail, a 65-mile dedicated bike path from Kittery to Portland Maine for recreation and commuting. That's a lot of mileage and a lot of stories. Tune in to find out if these four MBO protagonists– Rebecca, Larry, Jim and Eric– complete their ride distances. My Body Odyssey attended the 51st Falmouth Road Race- the local, 7-mile pub crawl that quickly evolved into a major, international event with 75,000 spectators and ten thousand runners annually. Our episode features three participants at this year event, including the only runner to have completed all 51 Falmouth Road Races: Dr. Brian Salzberg.  “I've had just a slew of injuries,” said Dr. Salzberg, a professor of Neuroscience and Physiology at UPenn Medical School. “And they always happen away from Falmouth. So it never stopped me from running the Falmouth Road Races.” Actually, what may not have stopped Dr. Salzberg is his own tenacity. He's finished the event with a brain tumor and on torn ligaments. “I did the 7 mile course on crutches in 2008,” he jokes. “ And, as far as I know, I still have the crutch record.” Born with Spina Bifida, fourteen-year-old wheelchair racer Madelyn Wilson displays a tenacity quite similar to that of Dr. Salzberg, whose race record she could eventually threaten. “Oh, this is my favorite race of the year,” she told us at the Health & Wellness Expo. “I'm always energetic and waiting to do this. Like, hurry up, let's go.” Are dedicated, highly enthused runners and racers like Dr. Salzburg and Madylen born to train and compete at events like the Falmouth Road Race? Or do the benefits of training and competing motivate individuals to just keep at it until it becomes second nature? Carol Crutchfield, a charity runner at this year's race, firmly believes that nurture, not nature, creates lifelong runners.   “The main thing is, your mind's your worst enemy,” says Carol, author of a book for the beginning runner, And They Shall Run. “So you gotta make yourself get out the door, and that's the hardest thing.” These inspiring odysseys may help you get out the door more often to run, cycle, walk, or whatever form of activity you choose. And they may motivate you to visit this now famous road race along the iconic Cape Cod shoreline looking out towards Martha's Vineyard. Tune in for inspiration amidst perspiration at the 51st Falmouth Road Race.   My Body Odyssey is a Fluent Knowledge production.  Original music by Ryan Adair Rooney.

And now it is finally time for our much-anticipated 3 Books chapter with the one and only ... Alie Ward.   Alie is the Sacramento-raised youngest of 3 girls who grew up in the 80s listening to DadWard deliver the morning news from the local radio station. She spent her childhood playing with bugs and just being told by her parents, “Come back by sundown and don't get tetanus.”   Alie fell in love with science and studied science and film in college. An unlikely but prophetic mix. She went on to win an Emmy for being CBS's correspondent for Henry Ford's Innovation Nation with Mo Rocco and was a host for Did I Mention Invention? on CW. She's a consulting producer for the Barack and Michelle Obama-produced Netflix show Ada Twist Scientist and appears in the Netflix science series Brainchild and the science channel's How to Build Everything.    BUT THAT'S NOT ALL! There's Myrmecology which is about ants, there's Scorpiology which is about scorpions, there's Etymology which is about word origins and, of course, there's one on Awesomeology about gratitude and happiness starring yours truly.    Now it's time to pull up your petrified stump and get ready to talk about: self-help books, starting a podcast, skunk predators, Life lists, Cervidology, infectious energy, confidence versus arrogance, visioning, the Galápagos Islands, fostering community, building trust, formative books and much, much more...   Let's flip the page into Chapter 113 now…   What You'll Learn:  Are self-help books formulaic?  What is independence? What are east vs west coast podcast styles? What is Alie's advice for starting a podcast? What is a life list? What is cervidology? Why should we never be embarrassed about our favorite books? Does the Law of Attraction work? How can we make our energies more infectious? What is the fine line between confidence and arrogance? What is the etymology of confidence? What is the power of ‘show up like you belong'? Why is visioning so important? Why do reviews matter in the podcast world? How can we make people care about others? What is wrong with the news? What makes the Galapagos so special? How can we foster community? California – and specifically Lincoln Park in San Francisco – is at least in theory the ultimate destination for the band of travelers and seekers that populate Amor Towles's latest novel, “The Lincoln Highway.” But their journey becomes defined by detours, reversals and recalibrations – in much the same way that Towles describes how he composes his novels. “While I'm writing chapters,” he says, “I'm also adapting to surprises that surface from the work.” We'll talk to Towles about the themes that unite his novels and his own odyssey as a writer.

You gotta do your turn as caterpillar goo, if you wanna morph into a butterfly. Today's episode about personal evolution explains a fundamental principle, one that can profoundly shift your mindset and move you forward. We're talking about the deeper inner work that happens when you let go of the narrow viewpoint of ‘my looks' and ‘my weight' and start addressing the bigger picture of “Who am I?” and “Who am I becoming?” The thing is, inner work necessarily takes you through some sticky stages, experiences you might prefer to sidestep with some Goo Gone (yes, there is such a product). Be patient; the butterfly emerges as sure as it does in nature. You are not your past. You are not even your present. You are your next conscious choice… READ THE COMPANION WISDOM BITE: https://consciousweightloss.com/wb1-02-personal-evolution/ In this episode we'll learn what's required for lasting change is deep transformation. You have to be willing to explore the goo before you can explore the skies. We'll cover why personal evolution is pivotal to weight loss by helping you grow beyond your coping mechanisms to develop the life skills you need. We'll also hear from Darlene, a new listener, and how she's finding meaning in this genesis approach as it benefits other parts of her life as well. Topics discussed in this episode: ● How most people end up managing weight loss when it's built on limiting beliefs ● How weight loss is a microcosm of the challenges in your life ● How self-integrity can be honored in whole or in part ● How you can be inspired to expand your growth beyond weight loss ● Why you need to let go of the past for a better present and future ● What to do when you make a choice that doesn't serve you ● How to know when you've transcended your weight issues Darlene's comments in this episode: ● “When I went through and I read the eguide it definitely inspired me to do it now, so it helped me make the decision.” ● “I'm looking for this process to not only inform my weight loss, but also too, I just know that the ripple effect will be more than that.” ● “Making a decision to be on the journey and then understanding what are some of the conscious choices that are easy enough to say Yes to.” IF YOU LIKED WHAT YOU HEARD TODAY, WE'D LOVE IT IF YOU'D LEAVE AN ENCOURAGING REVIEW AND THEN TELL YOUR FRIENDS.
