Mark Clavey sent this picture right after St Patrick's Day 2024: “Hi Marc! Here's our write - up for how we spent St Pat's at O'Malley's Pub... and a few pictures... "There was more March Madness for the band this past Sunday as we celebrated the Day of the Festival of St Patrick with a noon - performance at O'Malley's Pub(Episode 136). The day started around 10:00a as the band started straggling in and setting up. It was a brisk 40° when we loaded in, and would reach a balmy 48° when we loaded out at 4:30. Early - birds had already formed a line by 10:30 – despite the fact that the Pub wouldn't open until 11:30. (This plan was well - advised given the epic proportions of Snake Saturday's one - person - out/one - person - in crowd.) By the time the band started playing at noon, the bar was full and the crowd lively – being more vocal for the sing - alongs than they were for the toasts. There was a larger - than - usual number of Tullamore - fans than is typical for St Patrick's Day (as it was at lunchtime on a Sunday rather than a workday). Shout - outs to Mike, Amy, Anna, and Jason; Ray and Carrie; Eric and Dena; Eric, Linda, and Eleanor; Trey; Connie, Brandie and Rhonda; Shannon; Rob and Mitch; Andrew; Lisa, Craig, Ed, and Mary; Mikayla; and Jenn. Mark successfully navigated the afternoon notwithstanding the return of his chest - supercold (that knocked him out of the February weekend) and having sliced up the index - finger on his strumming hand. (Evidently, while holding a pick between the thumb and the bird - finger is a doable thing, it DOES produce a Charlie - horse at the base of the thumb when you do it for three hours straight.) Said navigation was aided with the Black Bush providing the kind of lubrication that makes your engine tick. We played until 3:30 before turning the stage over to The Kelihans – who would, in turn, hand off the stage to Chance the Arm at 8:00p. In the meantime, Ryan Rancudo and Bob Reeder handled the St Patrick's Day festivities for the audience in the upper cellar. Overall, it was a great afternoon and (we're assuming) a great night as well. (Photos courtesy of Amy Cripe, Mike Moran, and Mary Hanover.)" Best, - Mark”

On the evening of January 28, 1980 the United States Coast Guard cutter Blackthorn was leaving Tampa Bay on its way to its home base in Galveston, Texas. It was a cool, calm, and pleasant night as the Blackthorn headed out. At the same time, the SS Capricorn was inbound to the bay. Through a series of missteps and miscommunications, the Blackthorn and Capricorn collided almost head-on, killing 23 Coast Guardsmen. Rich's wife Dawn joins the show again as a guest. Russell Howell emailed: "Tractoring on our smallhold while listening! Really love the show, it is my companion anytime I am on the tractor or making mead!" Maura Goodin emailed: "Good afternoon, I didn't expect to be writing in to a podcast today, but I had yesterday's episode playing while I was working from home today and was pleasantly surprised by the second track you selected, by Keltricity; the set they were playing is all tunes that my dad, John Goodin, composed. He passed away two and a half years ago now. He was a mandolinist and guitarist, who composed a pretty wide range of music from dance tunes to classical pieces; the Classical Mandolin Society of America has preserved his website and blog at https://mandotopia.classicalmandolinsociety.org/, where he collected all his recordings and sheet music (much of it freely available under a Creative Commons license and maintained by CMSA). I see that Keltricity is from Louisville, which makes sense, as my dad was one of the founding members of the Louisville Mandolin Orchestra before my family relocated to northeastern Iowa; he kept in touch with a lot of the local musicians and the Louisville Mandolin Orchestra actually played so many of his pieces that they ended up recording a CD of them (called, of course, "It's All Goodin"). The tunes Keltricity played in that set are all ones that were in the repertoire for my dad's contra dance band, Contratopia, and that recording featured some of his published harmony parts as well. Contratopia still regularly plays for dances here in Minneapolis where I live, at the same folk dance hall where my own band plays, so we're keeping up the music since he's gone. I'm not sure if you've ever played Contratopia on the show, sorry  -  -  I definitely haven't listened to the full back catalog of podcasts, though I've been an occasional listener for many years!  -  -  but I know you've played a track by another band that their pianist is in, Brass Lassie, so if you haven't checked their recordings out, you might like to! Their albums all have a mix of original tunes by band members and traditional tunes in Celtic and old - time styles. They used to tour the DC area contra dance scene and play for the Sunday afternoon all - waltzes dances there, so there's probably more than your average number of waltzes on their albums. Sorry for such a long email! Last bit of fun trivia as a thank - you, the "Maggie" in the tune name from that set is our old family dog, a border collie we had when I was little. (She predated the digital age or I'd include a photo!) My dad wrote so many tunes that he named them after anything he could think of (or just the day he wrote them, if he never got around to a proper name), so there's several named after our various pets. This set has another one named after Maggie: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=56neWaCahc4 I hope you have a good weekend, and thanks again for the great surprise!"

Welcome to Season 8 of The Witch Wave!Cécile McLorin Salvant is a three-time Grammy-winning singer and composer, considered by many to be the Ella Fitzgerald/Sarah Vaughan/Billie Holiday/choose-your-own-iconic-vocalist of our time. The late opera legend Jessye Norman described Salvant as “a unique voice supported by an intelligence and full-fledged musicality, which light up every note she sings.” Salvant's style and repertoire are extensive and expansive connecting vaudeville, blues, theater, jazz, baroque, pop, and folkloric music. She's known as an eclectic curator, unearthing rarely recorded, forgotten songs with strong narratives, interesting power dynamics, unexpected twists, and humor. Salvant is widely admired and decorated with such awards as being the winner of the Thelonious Monk competition in 2010, the MacArthur fellowship (known in shorthand as the MacArthur Genius Award), and the Doris Duke Artist Award, in addition to the aforementioned multiple Grammys for Best Jazz Vocal Album. In addition to her stunning singing, Cécile is beloved for her visionary visual style, as well as for the tropes of mythology, magic, and monstresses which often show up in her original songs and her interpretations of existing ones. Her two most recent albums, Ghost Song (Nonesuch Records, 2022) and Mélusine (Nonesuch Records, 2023) include songs about supernatural love and mythic transformations, and her forthcoming album and animated feature, Ogresse, is a musical fable she describes as both a biomythography and an homage to the loa Erzulie.Born and raised in Miami, Florida of a French mother and Haitian father, she started classical piano studies at 5, sang in a children's choir at 8, and started classical voice lessons as a teenager. Salvant received a bachelor's in French law from the Université Pierre-Mendes France in Grenoble while also studying baroque music and jazz at the Darius Milhaud Music Conservatory in Aix-en-Provence, France.Salvant is also an accomplished visual artist, and her fantastical drawings, embroideries, and papercuttings can currently be seen up at Picture Room in Brooklyn through Nov 3, 2024. She is also on tour now, and will be performing at Carnegie Hall multiple times over the coming months. On this episode, Cécile discusses how she learned to embrace her “weird” in her music and other work, her love of hybrid creatures and mystical monstresses, and her burgeoning interest in ancestral magic.Pam also talks about voting as a means of counteracting tired old tropes about “diabolical” outsiders, and answers a listener question about getting to know the goddess Athena.Cécile McLorin Salvant songs featured in this episode:“Ghost Song” from Ghost Song (Nonesuch Records, 2022)“Wuthering Heights” cover from Ghost Song (Nonesuch Records, 2022)“Fenestra” from Mélusine(Nonesuch Records, 2023)Our sponsors for this episode are Ritual + Shelter, The Vintage Storyteller, Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab, BetterHelp, Blackthorn's Book of Sacred Plant Magic out now from Weiser Books, Mithras Candle, and The Missing Witches Deck of Oracles out now from North Atlantic Books. We also have print-on-demand merch like Witch Wave shirts, sweatshirts, totes, stickers, and mugs available now here. And if you want more Witch Wave, please consider supporting us on Patreon to get access to detailed show notes, bonus Witch Wave Plus episodes, Pam's monthly online rituals, and more! It's such a joy to be joined today by author Amy Blackthorn! We're chatting about her history in witchcraft and her new book, Sacred Plant Magic. But I couldn't help myself, as an avid reader of all of Amy's books, to ask about some of her other works as well. You'll definitely learn a lot in this very fun episode. Buy the Book: https://redwheelweiser.com/book/blackthorns-book-of-sacred-plant-magic-9781578638307/ Renowned herbalist Amy Blackthorn shows readers how to bring plant spirits into their daily spiritual practice with therapeutic access, subconscious learning, and divining skills that help them understand plant spirits on a deeper level. Blackthorn's Botanical Magic showed a new generation of witches how scent affects people, whether they understand it or not. In Blackthorn's Book of Sacred Plant Magic, we travel even deeper into the magical garden of scent. We know that a walk down a summer street can bring back the smell of childhood summers with friends, riding bikes and swimming. Spring breezes carry with them the clean soapy smell of your second-grade teacher. We experience scents not only in the here and now but also filtered through the lens of our past. Using the power of scent, we can create a sense of the sacred in our daily lives. Part reference guide, part recipe book, and part ritual journey, Blackthorn's Book of Sacred Plant Magic offers readers an in-depth exploration of the vital connection between scents and magical practice. Amy Blackthorn is a professional intuitive and the bestselling author of several books on botanical magic, including Blackthorn's Botanical Magic, Blackthorn's Botanical Brews, and Blackthorn's Botanical Wellness. The founder of Blackthorn's Botanicals, she has a certification in aromatherapy and was ordained by the Order of the Golden Gryphon. Amy lives in Delaware. Instead, Blackthorn's Botanical Wellness supplies holistic solutions that enable you to lead your best life.According to Blackthorn, self-care isn't “me, first”; it's “me, too.” In clear, accessible, friendly language, Blackthorn's Botanical Wellness teaches the skills to put these important lessons into practice.

I just got back from another trip into the wilds of Northern British Columbia. It snowed last week while I was driving up but cleared up in a couple of days leaving everything very wet and sloppy. There must have been over 100 pounds of mud on my vehicle. The bears are out and I have seen a couple of black bears along the roads. The bush is very dry this year and one place where I normally see trumpeter swans and other aquatic birds is completely dry. I will include a couple of photographs from this time last year. There is great concern about the potential wildfire situation this summer. I truly enjoy listening to the podcasts while I drive. Unfortunately, I have been unable to download the last couple of them. Has there been a change in the way they are posted? Please give my warmest regards to your family. I regret that I was unable to journey to the states this spring as there have been a number of changes on behalf of some of my clients.” Carl C emailed: “I'm disappointed you needed to do this after all these years. Learn more about the invasion at http://celticinvasion.com/ #celticmusic #irishmusic #celticmusicpodcast I WANT YOUR FEEDBACK What are you doing today while listening to the podcast? Please email me. I'd love to see a  picture of what you're doing while listening or of a band that you saw recently. Email me at follow@bestcelticmusic. Brandi Carpenter emailed from Spokane, WA: “Hi Marc, I've been listening to your podcast for many years now and love it so much!! My family has switched to Spotify and I'm wondering why I can't find your Irish and Celtic Music Podcast on it...will it make it on there eventually? I don't have an Apple phone so I'm sad that my current podcast hookup (Google) is closing down. Thank you for all your hard work!” Ben Q emailed: “Hi Marc, Big fan & patron with an Android problem  -  Google Podcasts has gone away, annoyingly (just a few short years after they killed Google Listen and forced everyone to migrate there). I see that the "Listen on Google Podcasts" button on celticmusicpodcast.com now redirects to podcastaddict.com, so I guess that this sunsetting of that podcast app is probably not news to you. However, I've tentatively replaced Google Podcasts as my podcast app, not with podcastaddict, but with what Google / Android suggested as a replacement, YouTube Music. I imported all of my podcasts, and they are all working the same way as before the change, except for The Irish & Celtic Music Podcast. Searching YouTube Music for "irish & celtic music podcast" on YouTube Music brings up these search results, of which one looks like the right one, this result. However, that podcast doesn't seem to have the correct shows  -  the most recent one is from 2023; I'm not able to listen to Red - Haired Bully Boys #657 or Plant Your Boots For Freedom #656 at that link. I'm sure you're busy, but just wondering if you had any insight into this. It's worth mentioning that, if I understand correctly, this app doesn't require people's podcasts to be hosted on YouTube  -  I'm listening to the Savage Lovecast, for example, just as I usually do, and I don't think Dan has moved his show archive over to YouTube; I'm just using YouTube Music to listen to his regular, free podcast XML feed like usual. Anyway, thanks for taking the time and for all the work that you're doing.” Daniel Morrison emailed: “Hi Marc, I am finally making my first trip to Ireland. My Grandparents of both sides are Ireland. Castle Bar Mayo, Tuam Galway for Dad's my Grandparents. Kenmare Kerry for Ma's my Grandparents Going on Package deal for 7 days. Your Podcast has inspired Me so much to make the trip.” Christine Manbeck emailed a photo responding to my St Patrick's Day question: “Guinness Chocolate cake; parade; Screaming Orphans concert”

Chris explains the mouse's habits, favourite food, and predators. He describes the importance of blackthorn hedging and the complicated ecosystem it supports. The pair are then serenaded by a cacophony of bird song at the farmyard and Chris gets excited by the animated presence of red-wing birds and shares their travelling trends.
