Have we done as David did and invited the Lord to examine our innermost motives, thoughts, and what we stand for? David did and could say before the Lord and others that he knew how loving the Lord is. He could also say that he had walked in a proper manner according to God's word. David knew he was not guilty of what others had said about him and he asked God to vindicate him.  David had not been hanging out with the immoral and hypocritical people and making a mockery of who God is.  Can we ask God as David did to search us and try us and see if there is any wicked way in us knowing that it is not so? Send us a textIn a 24‑hour period leading up to and including His death on the cross there were 28 specific Old Testament prophecies fulfilled to the letter, and in addition to that, there were many types fulfilled. When Jesus came to earth, He fulfilled over 300 prophecies and the probability that one Person could do this is impossible, unless you are God as Jesus is. Jesus is placed in the center as He is the focus of attention. It is amazing how many three's there are in the Bible. There are three being crucified and three titles for Jesus over His head which are actually the crime He was being killed for. The three titles are written in Hebrew, Greek, and Latin to show that all of us are guilty of sin and thus all of us put Jesus on that cross, meaning we all need a Savior. The Jews get upset about the title 'The King of the Jews', but Pilate is really telling us who Jesus really is.  Have you trusted Jesus as your Lord and Savior?  If not, why not today?  Rom 10:9-13 - Ro 10:9 that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.  10 For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. 11 For the Scripture says, "Whoever believes on Him will not be put to shame." 12 For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek, for the same Lord over all is rich to all who call upon Him. 13 For "whoever calls on the name of the LORD shall be saved." Mark 8:36 "For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul?             John 14:6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life.              This familiar story in Luke 21 gives us a few things we should take away from it.  First, it is not how much you give, it is the heart with which you give it.  Secondly, did that gift you gave cost you anything?  In other words, was it something that you sacrificed or gave up to give? Thirdly, we see that the system was set up so that it literally trumpeted the amount someone was giving as the money flowed down the tube making noise.  I still believe the Bible teaches that we should give God at least 10% of everything we have including our time and abilities.  So, I guess the question is what do we do with our time, abilities, and money?  Are we giving God all that we should because we love Him and want to honor and serve Him with all that we have? If not, why not? Luke 21:1-4 And He looked up and saw the rich putting their gifts into the treasury, 2 and He saw also a certain poor widow putting in two mites. 3 So He said, "Truly I say to you that this poor widow has put in more than all; 4 "for all these out of their abundance have put in offerings for God, but she out of her poverty put in all the livelihood that she had."     Mark 8:36 "For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul?              John 14:6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. Send us a textThe Jews have backed Pilate into a corner at this point. It is a matter of Jesus claiming to be King and there can be only one King in Rome. He can either save his soul or his life. If He turns Jesus loose, he loses his life, if He crucifies Him, it will be his soul. So, Pilate asks where Jesus is from, but Jesus knows it is too late for Pilate, he has already said he doesn't care about truth and so He does not answer him. It is a bad place to be when you have rejected God for so long, that He refuses to speak to you anymore. Pilate lets Jesus know that he is powerful and can let him go or he can have him crucified and Jesus speaks one more time. He lets Pilate know that He only has power because God has granted it to him. Then He lets Pilate know that his sin is less than that of the one who delivered Jesus up and I believe He is speaking about Judas. The Bible speaks of degrees of sin and degrees of reward. Hell won't be the same for everyone, just as Heaven won't. Read 1 Corinthians 3:8-15, 2 Corinthians 5:10. 2 John 1:8 Look to yourselves, that we do not lose those things we worked for, but that we may receive a full reward.  Revelation 22:12 "And behold, I am coming quickly, and My reward is with Me, to give to every one according to his work.Mark 8:36 "For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul?             John 14:6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. The Gospel and Justification The Gospel is the power of God for salvation (Romans 1:16). All have sinned and are guilty before God (Chapters 1-3). David and Abraham were justified by faith, not by works (Chapter 4). Justification provides 11 benefits of trusting Christ (Chapter 5). Emphasis on the love and grace of God in sending Christ for sinners. Justification by Faith Verse 1: Justification brings peace with God through Jesus Christ. Justification refers to being declared righteous, as if one never sinned. It is a once-for-all verdict based on faith in Christ. Benefits of Justification Peace with God Trusting Christ ends the war between God and humans (James 4:4). Believers can find peace in all situations (Philippians 4:6-7). Access to God Believers have been ushered into the presence of God (Ephesians 2:18). This access signifies safety and an ongoing relationship with God. Standing before God Believers enjoy a secure position in God's grace (Ephesians 2:13). They hold a privileged status as God's special people. Rejoicing in Hope Christians boast in the hope of God's glory, unlike worldly boasting. Hope is a confident expectation grounded in faith. Glory in Tribulations Believers can rejoice in trials as they lead to growth and strength. Difficulty does not negate hope or promise of glory in the future. Growth Through Trials Tribulations produce perseverance, character, and hope (Romans 5:3-4). Character is developed through testing, akin to refining metal. Hope remains firm because of God's love, which the Holy Spirit has poured into believers' hearts (Romans 5:5). The Love of God God's love is given to believers through the Holy Spirit. This love provides strength during trials and tribulations. The Holy Spirit The Holy Spirit indicates salvation and provides peace and strength. Transition from faith to hope to love is significant in the believer's life. Christ's Sacrifice Christ died for helpless sinners, showing God's love (Romans 5:6-8). His love was demonstrated while believers were still in sin. Pardon from Wrath Justification changes a believer's status (righteous) and state (becoming more like Christ). If God justified sinners, he is certainly able to save them from future wrath (Romans 5:9-10). Argument of 'how much more' is used to emphasize the assurance of salvation and reconciliation with God through Christ. Before We Were Enemies with God We have reconciliation with God through Jesus' death and atoning work. Reconciliation focuses on restoring the relationship between two previously opposing parties. Colossians 1:19-22 emphasizes that we were once alienated and enemies but are now reconciled through Jesus' death. The passage stresses that we are the offending party, not God. Human hostility towards God is active and personal, despite professing love for Him. Salvation Through Christ's Life We are saved not only by Jesus' death but also by His resurrection. Hebrews 7:25 states that Jesus intercedes for us, saving those who come to God through Him. Paul discusses how, if we were reconciled as enemies, we will be completely saved by Christ's resurrected life. Salvation is present and future because Christ is alive and actively saving us. Joy in God and from God Habakkuk 3:18 encourages rejoicing in the God of salvation. Our joy comes from God's grace, not our own merit (Psalms 45:7). Believers can rejoice now due to reconciliation, which brings about a relationship with God characterized by righteousness and life. Romans 14:17 explains the kingdom of God involves righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit. Rejoice in God In light of present circumstances (Romans 5:1-5): We have peace with God now. We have a sure hope. In light of the foundation of salvation (Romans 5:6-8): Human love is fickle. God's love is sacrificial. In light of the bright future (Romans 5:9-11): We will not face God's wrath. We will be saved by His life. We have reconciliation now. Illustration: Clarity in God's Message Fog can obscure our view and make us feel isolated. Historical example of British troops misunderstanding a message during a fog: initial message was despairful but later revealed victory. Similar misinterpretations occurred with the message of Jesus' death. Romans 8:37 reminds us we are more than conquerors through Christ's love, urging us to live in His power. Conclusion Chapter 5 of Romans emphasizes faith, love, access to God, and the hope found in the Gospel.   What are your eyes fixed on?                  In Psalm 73 we see the writer has taken his eyes off of God and put them on the world and what he perceives is going on.  It is easy sometimes to look around and see what the wicked are doing and it looks like everything is going their way and they are living the good life in spite of the evil they do. They reject God and think that He cannot and will not do anything to them for the way they are living. This Psalmist was not looking in the right place as we often don't either.  He finally goes into the temple of God and is shown the end of these wicked people.  He sees that it might look like they have it all now, but unfortunately this is the best that it will ever be for them.  They may get it all now, but pay later as the Midas commercial used to say.  You can pay me now or you can pay me later.  We who trust in Christ may suffer for following Him now, but it will be worth it all in the end as Romans 8:18 says, For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us. The Psalmist is ashamed of himself for thinking all of these things and doubting the goodness of God.  Let us not be like this Psalmist who got his eyes on the world and was disillusioned, but let us be like him in the last part of the Psalm where he says in verses 25-26 Whom have I in heaven but You? And there is none upon earth that I desire besides You. 26 My flesh and my heart fail; But God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. Amen!!           Surely God is good to Israel, To those who are pure in heart! Send us a textHere we see how the Romans would pacify the Jews by releasing someone convicted of crimes to them on the Passover.  Pilate hopes he can finally get Jesus set free and His blood off his hands.  But the Jews have outmaneuvered Pilate again and they have told the crowd to ask for Barabbas the robber.  Pilate scourges Jesus, mocks Him, puts a crown of thorns on His head, and a Kingly purple robe on Him and yet the crowd still will not feel sorry for Jesus, they want him killed.  He finally tells them to behold the Man, in other words look at this pitiful fellow, don't you want Him to be released and they cry out Crucify Him, Crucify Him.  Then for the second time Pilate tells them I find no fault in Him.  Jesus has done nothing wrong for Him to be convicted of and especially crucified, so Pilate says if you want Him crucified, you do it. Mark 8:36 "For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul?             John 14:6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. In Luke 20 Jesus has upset the religious atmosphere of the temple and therefore the leaders question His authority.  He then tells one of the more familiar parables about the owner of the vineyard who keeps sending people to get some of the fruit.  This is a picture of God sending prophet after prophet to Israel to get them to do what is proper in leading the people in a right way to God.  They keep killing the prophets and finally they kill the owner's son who is a picture of Jesus being killed. We might not be in danger today, but when we stand up for the truth when a church or leader starts to go astray we might be called heresy hunters or trouble makers.  When that happens we know that things have gone extremely wrong.  In other countries they do kill those who tell the truth about Jesus and one day they might lock us up, take what we own away, or even kill us if we don't begin to stand up for the truth today.  There is a famine in the land for the truth Isaiah 59:4 No one calls for justice, Nor does any plead for truth. They trust in empty words and speak lies; They conceive evil and bring forth iniquity. We must take a stand now.  Ultimately Jesus will crush those who go against Him and His people and in the end He wins, but God will hold us responsible for failing to stand up for HIS TRUTH. Send us a textExodus 23:29-31 says "I will not drive them out from before you in one year, lest the land become desolate and the beast of the field become too numerous for you.  30 "Little by little I will drive them out from before you, until you have increased, and you inherit the land. 31 "And I will set your bounds from the Red Sea to the sea, Philistia, and from the desert to the River. For I will deliver the inhabitants of the land into your hand, and you shall drive them out before you. I believe these verses have a second application for us today in that it speaks of how God works in our life in using us in ministry and His will for our life.  He doesn't tell us all He wants us to do at one time, but asks us to do things one at time until we get to the ultimate goal of His will for our life.  God doesn't show us all of His will at one time as one guy said I wished He did and gives us steps one-10, but I believe this would probably scare most of us to death, but keeps giving us tasks and as we step out and do them He gives us another.  If you don't do step one you can't ever see His will for step two and so on.  We have to obediently step out as God shows us His will and we will end up where He wants us.  Is this your desire?     Mark 8:36 "For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul?             John 14:6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life.           In 1 Samuel chapters 9-10 we saw Saul looking for donkeys and Samuel the prophet had been sent by God to find the man selected by Him to be King.  Who should he find but Saul who was physically impressive, tall, and handsome. At this time, he would have been in his late 20s (cf. 13:1). Isn't this what we always look for in a leader?  God gave the people just what they wanted. Unfortunately, we often look for the qualities we think are important in leaders, but God has different ideas on what they should be. We look at all the things people seem to be and God looks at the heart (1Samuel 16:7).  David was not the man they would have picked to be their leader, but God knew what was inside of him and picked David because of that. Are we guilty of doing this with people, especially those we look to inside the church to be the ones who lead us and guide us in the most important area of our life?  We need to make sure of what is on the inside before we pick leaders and make sure what is inside of us is right with God too. Are the qualities we have the ones God looks for or are they the ones that make us what the world wants to see?                   1Samuel 16:7 But the LORD said to Samuel, "Do not look at his appearance or at the height of his stature, because I have refused him. I believe these verses have an application for us today in that it speaks of our sanctification, God will give you the ability to drive out the sins in your life as He puts His finger on them and says they must go.  We have to be obedient to do this when He tells us to or else there will come a time when we will not be able to drive them out. Later on the Israelites had not obeyed the voice of God and He told them because they would not drive the out they could not and they were plagued the rest of their days and to this day by the inhabitants of the land.  We need to listen to God when He says get rid of a sin and then we will not have to deal with it the rest of our life.     Mark 8:36 "For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul?             John 14:6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. Send us a text In John 18:31-38 we see Pilate still trying to get out of crucifying Jesus, but the Jews will not be persuaded. Jesus is then questioned by Pilate as to who He really is.  We know that Pilate's wife has had a dream about Jesus; he knows they delivered Him up for envy and so he is still desperately trying to find some way out.  Jesus then puts Pilate on the hot seat and even while He is under threat of the cross, He is still concerned with Pilate's soul.  Jesus wants to know why Pilate is asking the questions He asks.  Jesus admits He is a King, but of a heavenly realm, not earthly.  He then tells Pilate the reason He came is to bear witness of the truth and poor Pilate responds what is truth.          In 1 Samuel Saul was told by God to completely destroy the Amalekites, but decided that he apparently knew better than God what to do.  Part of this was based on the fact that he was not really a leader, but was more concerned with what the people wanted than what God did. When God tells us to do something He wants it done exactly like He said to do it, to not do that is disobedience and rebellion.  It is the same today, the word of God tells us what to do and how to do it and through the Holy Spirit uses prayer and the word to lead us and guide us.  God doesn't care about our sacrifices. He cares about our obedience. The Prophet Samuel was rightly grieved when He saw Saul whom God had put in charge to lead His people fall from grace because of his wanting to be popular and liked.  There is one standard, it doesn't matter who we are, God's word does not change because of popular opinion.  Are we going to be like Samuel and cry out to God for our pastors and leaders and hold them accountable or reap the consequences when they fall because they compromise like everyone else seems to be doing? Are we going to completely obey or think we can do part of what God says and it will be alright?                1Samuel 15:9-11,22-23 1Sa 15:9 But Saul and the people spared Agag and the best of the sheep, the oxen, the fatlings, the lambs, and all that was good, and were unwilling to utterly destroy them. Send us a text               Matthew 20:33 says They said to Him, “Lord, we want our eyes to be opened.”  God fed the Israelites with the food that came down from Heaven.  Jesus said He was the bread that came down from Heaven (John 6). This manna was the only food they had for the 40 years of wilderness wandering.  Christ is the only (spiritual) food we need during our earthly “wilderness wandering” on the way to the promised land (heaven). Nothing else satisfies, nothing else gives spiritual strength and life. It also represents his humiliation as His body was shattered before and after He was put on the cross.  He gave His flesh that we might have life and we remember that each time we celebrate the Lord's supper. They went out early to get it as we need to feast on Jesus' word and Spirit before our day starts. Send us a textIn this section we see the Jews just assume that Pilate will kill this ”Man” Jesus that they want killed because of envy.  Pilate lets them know real quick that it isn't going to be that simple, but asks what is He accused of? They come up with this general if He weren't an evil doer we would not have delivered Him up to you. In other words, we want Him killed, don't worry about the charges, just kill Him. The Jews have Pilate right where they want him and they are ultimately going to force Him to kill Jesus. We will see that Pilate has messed up three times in insulting the Jews and their God by some of the things he did. This is ultimately how they force him to do their will, because if he messes up one more time it is means the loss of his political position at the least and most like it will cost him his life. Are we willing to give up all our human ambitions to follow Jesus?  If not, why not?               In 1 Samuel 12:23-24 Samuel did what any good leader should do. He knew that the people had rebelled and sinned against God, but this could not be undone.  Instead he encouraged the people to follow the Lord with all their heart and remember all the good things God had done for them.  Samuel also said that God would not abandon them and he would not either for what they had done, but he would teach them and pray for them as all good leaders and Christians should do for others who have strayed.  We need to, if we have strayed remember what God has done for us and remember He will never leave us nor forsake us (Hebrews 13:5).  Also, we don't want to shoot our wounded, but we need to come alongside those who have strayed, encourage them to do all these things and pray for them.  The church is a hospital for sinners and we need to remember that. Only Jesus The Great Physician can heal us and forgive us of our sin.                  "Moreover, as for me, far be it from me that I should sin against the LORD in ceasing to pray for you; but I will teach you the good and the right way. Only fear the LORD and serve Him in truth with all your heart; for consider what great things He has done for you. Send us a text                           1 John 3:18-19 My little children, let us not love in word or in tongue, but in deed and in truth. 19 And by this we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before Him. John speaks here of love as an action as does 1 Corinthians 13, the love chapter and also James and many other places in the Bible. Love never just says, it always is grounded in the truth of the word and results in a love that wants the best for others. When we have this love it gives us assurance that we truly belong to Christ and gives us confidence to come boldly into His presence with our prayers. The whole book of 1 John is a series of tests that are meant to show us we are true believers and how to spot the false professors, or to show us our need of salvation. This is the test of love and the whole Bible is based on a love that God in Christ showed for us. If He did it for us, can we not show it to others? Jesus honors the Father by trusting in Him through every circumstance and Peter fails miserably.  Peter fails because He did not watch and pray as Jesus told him and the disciples to in the garden when Jesus went to pray. Mt 26:41 "Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak." They kept falling asleep and Jesus had already warned Peter that Satan desired to sift him as wheat earlier in Lu 22:31. Then He singles out Peter in Mt 26:40 Then He came to the disciples and found them asleep, and said to Peter, "What? Could you not watch with Me one hour? Peter fails because he thinks he can't which contradicts 1Co 10:12 Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall. Jesus stands strong because He has prayed and continues to trust the Father.  Peter fails because he is proud, he doesn't pray for help, and lastly because He did not leave when Jesus told them to leave and let them just take Him. He was somewhere he should have never been. Remember 1Co 10:13 There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it. Send us a textProverbs 24:3 says Through wisdom a house is built, And by understanding it is established; If you read to verse 6 you find out that wisdom is essential if we are to live a life that is pleasing to God and is fruitful. All of life is dependent on wise decisions. "The wise man built his house upon a rock," and that Rock is Christ Jesus (cf. Matt.7:24-27; 1 Cor. 10:4). God is the source of wisdom, not the world. A wise person knows that he needs other people in his life to help him make right decisions. We are foolish when we don't supplement our study of scriptures and every day decisions by first asking God and then when we are not clear on a decision to run it by others also. It is good to have godly friends who have knowledge in areas we don't and can give wise counsel.                 In 1 Samuel 10:1-6 we see Samuel anointing Saul as the king that the people wanted. Samuel spoke of three signs that would show that Saul had been picked and anointed in accordance with God's will.  The first of these would have given Saul the confidence in God's ability to control the people.  The second would have shown him that the people would accept him as king and the third would have shown him that he had the Holy Spirit enabling from God to lead, guide, and do all that God wanted him to do for Israel. Unfortunately, these lessons did not sink into Saul's heart.  He should have learned God could solve his problems, supply his needs, and give him the power he needed for service. God calls us to tasks and gives us the ability to do them, but we have to trust Him implicitly if we are going to accomplish God's will for our lives and the task He has given us.  Remember, God doesn't call the enabled, but when He calls us to a task He enables us to do it.  Let us trust Him today for anything and everything that He calls us to do for Him.                    1 Samuel 10:1-6 Then Samuel took a flask of oil and poured it on his head, and kissed him and said: "Is it not because the LORD has anointed you commander over His inheritance? 2 "When you have departed from me today, you will find two men by Rachel's tomb in the territory of Benjamin at Zelzah; and they will say to you, 'The donkeys which you went to look for have been found. Send us a textIn 1 John 2:15-17 John says don't love the world system of evil and wants that are always wanting more. The lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life are the three ways the devil always tempts us. It was done in the garden with Eve, and many other places in the Old Testament. It was attempted with Jesus when He fasted 40 days and nights. He never fell prey to the devil's temptations but fought them with scripture. He set the example of how we can win the battle with temptation too. We need to memorize scripture and remember who God is and that what He has is way better than the devil's cheap imitation of satisfaction. The devil's goodies always leave us wanting more. Let us remember the words of Ephesians 6:10 and following to verse 21. We are to be strong in the Lord and the power of His Might. Stand, withstand, having done all to stand, stand therefore. We don't need to win the battle, Jesus already has, so stand strong in His power. Amen!                    1 John 2:15-17 Do not love the world or the things in the world. Send us a textIn this section we see Jesus saying He has given us His glory that we will be one. The earthly sufferings of our Lord are part of His glory (John 12:23; 13:31-32; 17:1). And it is this glory—the glory of servant hood and of sacrificial service, which our Lord has given to us, His disciples. As Jesus was glorified by His coming to this earth, being rejected by men and put to death, so His disciples are also given the same glory, the glory of suffering for the sake of Christ: Secondly, He prays for us to have the same love that the Father loves the Son with.  This is a love which will prompt one to lay down his life for his friends (John 15:13). Mark 8:36 "For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul?             John 14:6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life.                 In this last chapter of Ruth, we see Boaz is a picture or type of Jesus Christ. This reminds us that to be a redeemer He had to become related to us before He could redeem us. He became flesh and blood so He could die for us on the cross (Heb. 2:14–15). In order to qualify, the kinsman redeemer also had to be able to pay the redemption price. Ruth and Naomi were too poor to redeem themselves, but Boaz had all the resources necessary to set them free. When it comes to the redemption of sinners, no one but Jesus Christ is rich enough to pay the price. Indeed, the payment of money can never set sinners free; it is the shedding of the precious blood of Christ that has accomplished redemption (1 Peter 1:18). There was a third qualification: The kinsman redeemer had to be willing to redeem. As we see in this chapter, Boaz was free to purchase both the property and a wife. We become the property of Jesus and His bride at the new birth.  Aren't you thankful that Jesus qualified in all ways to be able to redeem us (buy us back) from the slavery of sin? We can be thankful for this whole book that shows us that no matter how bad things look, Jesus is in the background and can turn our lives around if we are willing to let Him save us and take control.  Amen!                   Ruth 4:9-12 And Boaz said to the elders and all the people, "You are witnesses this day that I have bought all that was Elimelech's, and all that was Chilion's and Mahlon's, from the hand of Naomi. 10 "Moreover, Ruth the Moabitess, the widow of Mahlon, I have acquired as my wife, to perpetuate the name of the dead through his inheritance, that the name of the dead may not be cut off from among his brethren and from his position at the gate. Send us a text                      1 John 1:1-2 That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, concerning the Word of life-- 2 the life was manifested, and we have seen, and bear witness, and declare to you that eternal life which was with the Father and was manifested to us. These verses say this one from the beginning is a Real Person, and he has been seen and heard and handled. In other words, Christian faith rests upon the great facts of the life and acts of the God Man in history. The Apostle Paul stresses this a lot in his writings. Our Christian faith does not rest simply on ideas, or doctrinal statements. That is why becoming a Christian is not simply a matter of joining a church, or believing a certain creed, or signing a doctrinal statement. That has nothing to do with becoming a Christian. John points out that becoming a Christian is to be related to a Person. This is the point to which all objections to Christianity are ultimately directed, and attempt to destroy this basis of fact. The forces which seek to overthrow Christian faith today try to undermine our confidence in the facts of Scripture, these great historical truths about a Person who appeared in time.               Jesus is both the messenger and the message. The message and the messenger are identical. He is the one that IS and gives us eternal life.           In the first few verses of the book of Ruth we see 3 fatal mistakes.  First Elimelech takes his family down to the land of their enemies. He had a family to take care of and yet he walked by faith instead of sight, then he focused on the physical not the spiritual, and lastly he should have known that it was better to be hungry in Bethlehem in the will of God, rather than be full in the land of their enemies (Moab). These fatal mistakes cost this family almost everything.  First, Elimelech dies, then his wife Naomi allows their boys to marry women from Moab which was forbidden, and because of this they die too.  Naomi ends up with two pagan women in a land where she doesn't belong without any way to survive without a man to take care of her and the other two women. But thank God this is not the end of the story, just the tragic beginning.   Lessons It's been said that crises reveal what we are. They also make us what we are in God's plan 1 Peter 1 and James 1 says count it all joy and let patience have it's perfect work. Don't get out of the trial, learn what God wants you to from the trial. You don't want to be anywhere out of the will of God. It's better to starve to death in God's will rather than be somewhere He doesn't want you to be. When we disobey we put others and ourselves in danger of God's discipline and all kinds of bad things can happen. We can lose everything. God loves it when we come home to Him.                 Ruth 1:1-5 Now it came to pass, in the days when the judges ruled, that there was a famine in the land. And a certain man of Bethlehem, Judah, went to dwell in the country of Moab, he and his wife and his two sons. 2 The name of the man was Elimelech, the name of his wife was Naomi, and the names of his two sons were Mahlon and Chilion-Ephrathites of Bethlehem, Judah. And they went to the country of Moab and remained there. 3 Then Elimelech, Naomi's husband, died; and she was left, and her two sons. 4 Now they took wives of the women of Moab: the name of the one was Orpah, and the name of the other Ruth. And they dwelt there about ten years. 5 Then both Mahlon and Chilion also died; so the woman survived her two sons and her husband. Send us a textDavid expresses his trust in God several times in this Psalm and also asks that he not be ashamed.  He truly trusts in God as he says and has gone public in affirming his trust in the Lord.  If the Lord lets him down and his enemies triumph over him not only will his honor, but the Lord's honor will be at stake.  So what David is saying is don't let me be ashamed because if I am, your name is going to be dishonored too.  Do we feel the same way about the Lord and His honor and name? Everything a Christian does reflects on who God is and what He stands for.  So, let us make sure the way we live and when we make decisions that these reflect how great and holy our God is. Send us a textHere Jesus is still praying for us believers and is praying again that we would be one as the He is with the Father and the Holy Spirit.  They never fight over who gets to be the Father, who gets to be the Son or the Holy Spirit.  They are always one and in unison on everything because they have one purpose as we do also.  He is praying that we would be one in Them, THAT (here is the purpose) the world may believe that Jesus was sent by the Father and when they do that they will be saved.  That is it people, when we believe Jesus is who He said He was (God in Human Flesh), that He died for our sins, and we trust in that, we are saved. In the midst of all the craziness going on we have seen that many areas are shutting down everything except essential businesses. My wife saw that liquor stores are considered essential. I made the comment that the world cannot get through a crisis without something that comes in a bottle, a pill or liquor bottle or some other crutch. We who are believers have something way greater. Jesus said in John 14:17 Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. We have the promise that He is enough even though the world may be falling apart, we must not let the world make us anxious or stressed. Matthew 11:28 Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.… Paul said in Philippians 4:6-9 to not be anxious about anything but take it all to God and the peace that passes all understanding will guard your hearts and minds. He also said not to think on and fill your mind with the bad things but to dwell on what is good. Proverbs 6:23 says For the commandment is a lamp; and the law is light; and reproofs of instruction are the way of life:) Someone told me after hearing a sermon that they never knew it could feel so good to have their toes stepped on.  That is what the Bible, the Commandment does for us and to us.  It shows us the right way to live by the light it gives to walk in the ways of God and it also tells us when we are doing wrong.  Are we sensitive to the Word of God and the Spirit's leading when it tells us to do something or not to do something?  May we ever be diligent to hear the word of God and respond to what it says.  Amen.     John 14:6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. What I mean is that we will not all agree on all the things the Bible says, we get caught up with election, predestination, tongues, and we fight over what color carpet to have or matters that just are not essential to our salvation. Send us a textJesus has fulfilled His mission by revealing who God is to the disciples who have been chosen by the Father.  That is our mission, to reveal to the world Jesus Christ who is both Lord and Savior (2Peter 1:11). He tells us that they are a love gift from the Father to the Son Jesus Christ and they are saved. The proof is they have kept His word. They know that Jesus is God and everything He says comes from God the Father. He shows they are saved again by saying they received the words and have believed He was sent down by the Father. He prays for His disciples, He does not pray for the world because they are not His children. He has a special love for the disciples and all His children who have trusted Jesus as Lord and Savior. Lastly, He says that all believers belong to the Father and to Him also, and the way He will be glorified in the future is by the way we live here on earth for Him. These loaves were laid in the tabernacle in God's presence for 7 days.  They were changed out every week and were not laid there as a sacrifice to God for Him to eat as the idol worshipping people did for their so called gods. This represented several things:  First it was symbolic of Israel's calling from God as His people. It was symbolic of Jesus the Messiah's bread of life presence with them as one who sustains them.  Third it was to represent their continual thanksgiving for all of the blessings of God they received each and every day. It also was a symbol of God's providing and that Israel was supposed to be a source of spiritual food for the world. the love of the Heavenly Father               Luke 15 is one of the most famous parables of Jesus.  We see the story that is commonly called the prodigal son, but is really the story of the loving father.  We see this young man asking for his inheritance before the father is dead and then living for the world with all of his might.  Finally, he is at the bottom having spent all his money and having to eat pig food.  He decides to go home to his father and beg for forgiveness, but finds that the father has been waiting on and looking for him every day, hoping he would come back. This is the story of all of us that have wayward kids, we hope and pray that one day they will come back so we can show them how much we love them.  But this story is more than that, it is the love of a Heavenly Father who every day is looking for those who are living for the world to finally look up and want that forgiveness and salvation that can only be given when one realizes that the love of the Father is better than anything this world has to offer.  Do you know that love?  Have you come to the one who loves you and will forgive you and receive you as His own no matter what you have done?  Come, turn from your sins and ask Him to forgive you today, He will do it as the Bible tells us over and over again. Don't wait, do it now.                 “So he got up and came to his father. But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and felt compassion for him, and ran and embraced him and kissed him.            Luke 14:26-27 Jesus said "If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and his own life also, he cannot be My disciple. 27 "And whoever does not bear his cross and come after Me cannot be My disciple. In verses 12-24 Jesus gave a gracious invitation to all who would come and trust in Him and asked them to do so. Salvation is a free gift given to all who will receive it, but living for Jesus is costly. So many preachers and Christians today teach that salvation is free, but leave out the personal responsibility of living for Jesus that comes with salvation.  In the last section Jesus tells several parables about the cost, one involves loving Jesus more than family relationships, another involves the hardships that come with following Him, and the last involves being willing to give up all to follow Him.  What Jesus is saying to us is that if we are to be a successful disciple and shows we are a true Christian is that it means that Jesus be the number one priority in our life. He will be if we are really Christians. Send us a text                  Every day we miss the mark on the greatest commandment to Love God like He deserves. He deserves first place in all we do and the way we do it should be pleasing to Him.  The second, "You shall love your neighbor as yourself" is quoted from Leviticus 19:18 and is the most often quoted OT command (8 times in the NT), 3 in Matthew alone.  This is one of the most fundamental laws that God has ever given! Who is my neighbor: all people whom I come in contact with and have a chance to help spiritually or contribute to their well-being. Send us a textWho or what is your God?  A god is anything we sacrifice to or for.  We can sacrifice all our time, money, and energy for a job, a hobby, family, or any number of things. These can be good things if put in the proper priority. We need to make sure that God is the only one who has first place in our life. When we have nothing that subtracts from what He wants us to do, life will be as it should be.  Yes, life is still tough, difficult, and holds many dangers and traps, but it will bring the joy, peace, and abundant life in spite of those things if our goal is to show that He and only He is worthy of worship and glory. What is it that is hindering your relationship with God?  If you are worshipping (that is giving all your time, money, or energy) to things that will not bring glory to God you are wasting your life.  Let's covenant today not to do that.        It is so sad that we live in a world so obsessed with image. I heard someone say, I love cocky, whereas God hates it. That is what is being taught to children and adults in all areas of life. There is nothing wrong with looking and doing your best, but not when it is only about that. Everywhere you look it is talked about and promoted over and over again.  Christians build themselves up too and make their lives look like they are perfect and they have it all together.  It is sad to look around and realize that everyone is obsessed with looking like they are the best.  But that is not what God likes, He does hate it.  What do people see when they look at us?  Proverbs 6 says God Hates Pride. Here are just a few verses Proverbs 3:34 Surely He scorns the scornful, But gives grace to the humble.                James 4:10 Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up.           Luke 14:11 says “For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.”                       Proverbs 6:16 These six things the LORD hates, Yes, seven are an abomination to Him: 17 A proud look, A lying tongue, Hands that shed innocent blood,            Proverbs 11:2 When pride comes, then comes shame; But with the humble is wisdom.      Proverbs 16:19 Better to be of a humble spirit with the lowly, Than to divide the spoil with the proud.  Ro 12:16 Be of the same mind toward one another. Do not set your mind on high things, but associate with the humble. Do not be wise in your own opinion.    James 4:6 But He gives more grace. Therefore He says: "God resists the proud, But gives grace to the humble."                James 4:10 Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up.     1Peter 5:5 Likewise you younger people, submit yourselves to your elders. Send us a textThe law was given through Moses, but the truth (the law) can only condemn.  It is God alone who can see us for who we really are inside and yet give us the grace that we don't deserve.  Sometimes it is hard to remember that this is true.  Later in Mark 9:24 a man says to Jesus, Lord I believe, help my unbelief.  Do you ask God to help you as this man did to help you daily to trust in Him, to believe His promises, to know that even though you are not perfect and make many mistakes as Peter did, He says to you I have prayed for you that you may not fail? (Luke 22:32) Remember believer, you are His and He will never leave you nor forsake you and nothing can separate you from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus.          In Judges 16 we see Samson, the most famous of the Judges of Israel falling to his lowest level of sin.  He has done almost everything a person can do that is being used of God and yet God has been patient with him and not let him be consumed by his sin. Finally, he is tempted a third time by a woman and completely fails in his vow to God.  Samson is a picture of the Christian who completely and fatally falls into sin James 1:13-16.  He fell prey to Delilah's charms and was captured after God's patience finally ran out and He left Samson on his own.  First, we see that Samson was blinded physically after having been spiritually blind, then they bound him picturing his being bound in sin, then he grinds in the mill picturing the daily grind of being captive to sin and finally it leads to his death when he pulls down the pillars and dies.  It has been said that sin will take you further than you want to go, keep you longer than you wanted to stay, and cost you more than you ever wanted to pay.  What is it that area in your life where you are weak and are tempted to play around with sin?  We all have that area in our lives and the devil and his demons know what it is.  Let us not be like Samson and let sin take us captive and cost us everything that is dear to us.                       Judges 16:16-21 And it came to pass, when she pestered him daily with her words and pressed him, so that his soul was vexed to death, 17 that he told her all his heart, and said to her, "No razor has ever come upon my head, for I have been a Nazirite to God from my mother's womb. If I am shaven, then my strength will leave me, and I shall become weak, and be like any other man." When Delilah saw that he had told her all his heart, she sent and called for the lords of the Philistines, saying, "Come up once more, for he has told me all his heart." So the lords of the Philistines came up to her and brought the money in their hand. 19 Then she lulled him to sleep on her knees, and called for a man and had him shave off the seven locks of his head. Then she began to torment him, and his strength left him. 20 And she said, "The Philistines are upon you, Samson!" So he awoke from his sleep, and said, "I will go out as before, at other times, and shake myself free!" But he did not know that the LORD had departed from him. 21 Then the Philistines took him and put out his eyes, and brought him down to Gaza. Send us a textThe disciples were alone with Jesus on the mountain of transfiguration in Mark 9 and Matthew 17 and they got a glimpse of who He truly is and heard the Father speak of how He was pleased with Jesus. They were able to hear a word from God and see a glimpse of His true glory only because they were alone with Him on the mountain.  Have you seen Jesus for who He truly is and realized that in Him alone we are to look to for our salvation, comfort, strength, and joy? The bible says in Matthew 7:7 “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.         I don't know why most people think you can be saved by being good enough, doing more good than bad, and by keeping the 10 commandments or just believing that Jesus existed, but the law was only given to show us that we can never be good enough on our own that's why we need Jesus Christ. I don't know how that lie got started and I even believed that at one time.  Even when I go to the prisons, they have many programs to straighten people out, but the only correction that is going on there or anywhere else is if Lord does it. Luke again stressed that the results of the preaching of the gospel were due to God's work. The Christian evangelists were only harvesting the souls that God had already prepared. "Once again the human responsibility of believing is shown to match exactly with what God in his sovereignty had planned."                                       Psalm 67:1-2 says God be gracious to us and bless us, And cause His face to shine upon us, That Your way may be known on the earth, Your salvation among all nations. We see this priestly blessing that was to request God's favor on His people.  This causing of the face to shine means smiling on them with favor and approval.  This Psalmist requests this blessing so that other nations would know of God's favor and turn to Him in faith and experience His salvation.  Have we like the Psalmist prayed this for ourselves and the people of God so that His way would be known throughout the whole earth? The reference to God's Word having a part in their healing shows that spiritual nourishment plays a vital part in physical restoration. Such salvation should move God's people to make sacrifices to express their gratitude and to tell other people about the Lord's goodness. Have we cried out to God in desperation and asked Him to heal us and restore us from our sins, and told others how great He is?                                Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble; He saved them out of their distresses. He sent His word and healed them, And delivered them from their destructions. Let them give thanks to the LORD for His loving kindness, And for His wonders to the sons of men! Send us a textJohn 17:1 Jesus spoke these words, lifted up His eyes to heaven, and said: "Father, the hour has come. Glorify Your Son, that Your Son also may glorify You, 2 "as You have given Him authority over all flesh, that He should give eternal life to as many as You have given Him. 3 "And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent. 4 "I have glorified You on the earth. I have finished the work which You have given Me to do. 5 "And now, O Father, glorify Me together with Yourself, with the glory which I had with You before the world was.               In this section of Scripture we see Jesus asking the Father to give Him back the Glory which He had before the foundation of the World.  Jesus is God and was never less than God, but He did give up the usage of some of His divine attributes while He was here on earth such as knowing everything that would happen (Omniscience), He gave up the worship He had in Heaven, the infinite riches He had, the Omnipotence – being all powerful, and His ability to be everywhere at the same time as Jesus (Omnipresence). Jesus wanted to and did Glorify the Father by dying on the cross and paying for the sins of all people. He also did this by living a perfect sinless life while here on earth. He also defined eternal life as knowing the true God and Jesus Christ who are one.  Eternal life is not in a place called Heaven, but in a person called Jesus Christ who is God that came in human flesh. Mark 8:36 "For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul?             John 14:6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life.               All of Judges chapter 9 is a sad commentary on Gideon's life.  You would have thought because of all the lessons he learned from God he would not have surrendered to the rewards which his heroism brought him for the rest of his life. He apparently lived in wealth and ended up living like the kings and pagans who had many wives and many offspring, plus he followed their pagan practices.  He got way out of the will of God and did many things he should not have. This child Abimelech was the offspring of a concubine that ultimately took Israel even further into idolatry and evil than they had ever been.  He murdered his 70 brothers and yet was elected king after this by the leaders of Israel.  It is sad to see how a church, business, or any institution can fall so quickly based on the leadership that is allowed to be in charge.  God ultimately allows all these things, but it is because we choose the easy and quick solution rather than standing up to the problem which will become the cause of our destruction or that of a church or other institution.  Let us be known for standing up when things are not right and ask questions when they don't seem right.  Too many of us are willing to let things just happen and then we wonder why or how things got so bad.  Let's not let life draw us away from the real goal of glorifying God.                       Judges 9:1-3 Then Abimelech the son of Jerubbaal went to Shechem, to his mother's brothers, and spoke with them and with all the family of the house of his mother's father, saying, 2 "Please speak in the hearing of all the men of Shechem: 'Which is better for you, that all seventy of the sons of Jerubbaal reign over you, or that one reign over you?' Remember that I am your own flesh and bone." 3 And his mother's brothers spoke all these words concerning him in the hearing of all the men of Shechem; and their heart was inclined to follow Abimelech, for they said, "He is our brother."   “But seek His kingdom, and these things will be added to you.
