                And I think I'll talk about this later on, but they didn't kill Jesus because anything bad he did. But he told them they couldn't continue the way they were living and they weren't going to heaven by practicing the law. And they didn't want him telling them what to do. They didn't want him to tell them they were wrong because these Pharisees, man, they were the... They were it. They were the power people. They were the mighty people. They were it. Man, if you were a Pharisee, you was the top dog. You were the muckety-muck, the powers that be. You were it. Because there was only 6,000 of those people when Paul was around. These guys, you know, they didn't want to be told they were doing anything wrong. And really, you know, the 10th commandment, thou shalt not covet, is really the sum of all the other commandments because that's where it all starts. This is really the commandment that starts it all because that's the commandment that what happened in the Garden of Eden. There was one tree that God says you cannot have. And the devil come along and said, hey, did God say? And she saw it was good for food. It was pleasant to the eyes. And it was desirable to make one wise. So she took of the fruit and she ate it, right? Why does she eat it? And the law kind of lays out that here's the spiritual minefield you need to watch out for. you wouldn't want somebody to not put a sign out there on the road that says bridge out or elevator out and you open up the door and you step through and you know, wow, okay, you know, well, there went Marty, stand to him, you know, drove off the bridge and there's no bridge there, right? The law is complete. The law provides a penalty. But guess what? The law is impossible to keep. It's impossible to keep. The law is also weak, and that's why Jesus had to come down on the cross, right? It says in Romans 8, 3, For what the law could not do, and that it was weak through the flesh, God did by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh. I know that's kind of confusing. But we died to the law. We died to the law and it no longer has dominion over us. But we're not lawless. Because guess what? We're united to Christ. We're sharing his life. And thus we're walking in newness of life. Romans 8.4 says that the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us. Who walk not after the flesh but after the spirit. Living for God, he says, the fruit of the spirit is what? Love, joy, peace, long-suffering, gentleness, goodness. Meekness, faith, difference. That's not fruits, but that's fruit. That's one thing that happens. We get all of those things when we live for Jesus. And those don't happen naturally. I mean, you don't see a fruit tree and when it grows, there's an apple. You know, straining to make an apple. But when you just trust God and follow Him, you just naturally produce fruit, right? And that's what he's saying here is that so many times people want to try to just set these rules and standards and we come up with a list of do's and don'ts, of do's and don'ts, do's and don'ts. And we hold ourselves and everybody else to this standard. But instead of trying to live by those rules, Let's just love the one who died for us and then we'll serve him and live for him because we want to. And then we'll do what's right. That's what he's saying there. And he's not trying to say that we don't live for God. But like I said, when there's a legalistic, you gotta do this, you gotta do that, you're gonna fight it. But when there's a love behind what you're doing, you're gonna do it because you want to. Because we have served a new, have a new husband. We are the bride. That we were slaves to sin. And we didn't have any choice. But the moment we trust Christ and we begin to live for him, we become voluntary servants. We become voluntary slaves. We don't have to live for him, but we want to live for him. We get to live for him. And we love Jesus and God so much. And I said, look where you're at right now. Somebody tells you when to eat, when to sleep, when to get up, when to go to bed. They tell you when to do this, when to do that. Because see, eternal life is not just going to heaven one day. But eternal life. is a new quality of life it's not only quantity of life but it is quality of life and that's what makes Christianity so wonderful is not only the one day I get to go to heaven but now I have a new quality of life while I'm here That I live for God and I don't have to live the way I used to. I don't get myself in trouble as much as I used to before I trusted Christ, right? I don't do so many stupid things. And a lot of the things that were bad, that were worse, I don't do those. What I tell people is like Ephesians 3.20 says, for he is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all we ask or think according to his power that works in us mightily, right? Paul talks about I strive mightily through god's power right and so here's the deal we have the power to overcome sin and suffering and temptation anything in this world what what do we read in second peter i think we talked about it let me just read this verse again in second peter chapter one verse three and four And he says, as his divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness through the knowledge of him who called us by glory and virtue by which we have been given exceedingly great and precious promises that through these you may be partakers of the divine nature having escaped the corruption that's in the world through lust. Listen, sin is a dethroned monarch. Even though he's still trying to give us orders, you know what, we don't have to obey them. And sin wants us back under its control. So he says, do not let sin reign in your mortal body. Notice what he says here, that sin is personified as a king who rules over the lives of his people. And we were his slaves. In verse 17 it says, you were the slaves of sin. But you know what, sin no longer has dominion over us. And we don't have to obey it. The moment that Jesus Christ came into us we trusted him as lord and savior. We were spiritually dead, but it symbolizes we become alive again. Remember when Adam and Eve died in the garden? When they ate the fruit, what happened? They died spiritually, right? They didn't die physically. Later on, they died spiritually. Because all of a sudden, what happened? They were scared. They hid from God.          George Sweeting wrote, It is a fearful thing that people can be consumed by their own lust. Only God's grace keeps us from the wolf's fate. Only God's grace keeps us from doing to ourselves what that wolf does to himself. I think about the sharks, you know, they go crazy when they get in the water, right? And they attack them. Anybody like to watch Shark Week? I always like to watch that. But those sharks, man, when they smell that blood, they attack anything. And they literally roll their eyelids back and they're blind because they can't see. And they just attack anything and everything around them. Sometimes they hurt themselves or they destroy, they bite other animals or whatever's in their way. Bust up cages or get stuck in cages or who knows what they do. They're so big and powerful they're hard to be hurt. But they bite each other and attack anything that gets in their way. And that's what happens to people when they don't know Christ.           You know, the problem is we just don't know the power we have within us. That's the thing. Paul said I can do what? All things through Christ who strengthens me. 2 Corinthians 12, he said when I am weak, I am strong, right? Because why? Christ's power dwells in me. There's so many other places. Philippians 2.12, he talks about that. I was just trying to remember that verse this morning because my pastor quoted it yesterday, but he said, he talks about, you know, that it is work out your own salvation with fear and trembling because it is God who wills to do of his good pleasure, right? And over and over and over again, Ephesians 3.20 says that God is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all we ask or think according to His power that works in us. We've got Holy Spirit power.           I remember the story, what was it, about one of the future queen of England or something? They never did tell her that she was going to be the Queen of England because they were worried if they told her who she was that she would begin acting up and acting out because of who she was. And the one person decided to tell her who she was and she says, now that I know who I am, now I will live that out. And that's the Christian life. That's what we're supposed to do once we know who we are. The Bible says that we're called what? Christians if we know Christ. That means little Christ. It means we live like Christ, right? John says in chapter 1:36 And looking at Jesus as He walked, he said, "Behold the Lamb of God!" In the Old Testament many lambs died to cover sin, and even as Jesus was dying on the cross they were sacrificing thousands of lambs as required on Passover.  The sad thing is they did not recognize Jesus as the TRUE LAMB OF GOD and instead were still looking at some cheap imitation.  I hope you are not expecting some cheap substitute to save you.  Only Jesus can.  Trust in Him today. 1 Corinthians 5:7 For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed. In John 1:29 it says, the next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, "Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! John the Baptist presents Jesus as the one who will die in our place to take away our sin.  One man says in the Old Testament the question is 'Where is the lamb?'. Here he says it twice in John 1 and in all the Gospels that is the emphasis "Behold the Lamb of God!" In Revelation 5:12 those that know Him as Savior will sing "Worthy is the Lamb!” He speaks here of Jesus as that perfect, sinless, substitute who would die in our place as taking away the “sin” not sins of the world. John does not give us any genealogy, no birth narrative, no manger scene, he just cuts to the heart of the matter when he introduces the book with the statement that in the beginning was the Word, the Word was with God and the Word was God.  And if that is not enough in verse two he repeats it again.  In verse three we see that Jesus created everything.  Have you considered the wonderful ways our world works together, the beauty and order of it all? I remember the food chain the solar system, and the hydrological cycle from school, but it really comes alive when you see the beauty and wonder of it all by looking at it through the lens of the Bible. This verse helps you to see the world through the lens of creation rather than the lie of evolution.  When you see a watch you know someone made it, it is the same with everything in our world and universe, without a creator it would not exist and it amazes me how you could see it all and believe that it HAPPENED by chance.                                In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being (John 1:1-3) NO way it happened by chance.              In Luke 24:44-46 Jesus reminds His disciples of all that He has taught them concerning His fulfilling all that was written in the 3 major divisions of the Old Testament, namely the Law, the Prophets, and the Psalms.  He tells them that this fulfillment was a necessity. He then opens their understanding of the scriptures which means He through the Holy Spirit gave them full understanding of all that He taught them concerning why He had to suffer, die, be buried and rise the third day.  Do you know why Jesus had to do these things?  It was so we could be saved.  Unless He accomplished all of these things we could never be saved (1 Corinthians 15:3-4).  That is why when people add to this and say anything else saves you they are to be considered as heretics.  Jesus paid it all. Note this, He again did what we talked about yesterday in explaining the Scriptures.  Unless it is explained and the Holy Spirit gives us understanding we will never understand.                      Luke 24:27 says Then beginning with Moses and with all the prophets, Jesus explained to them the things concerning Himself in all the Scriptures. Jesus on the road to Emmaus gave these privileged disciples a short course on finding Christ in the Old Testament. Can you imagine being a part of what they heard?  Every part of Scripture points to Jesus, from the beginning to the end.  He may have explained to them the parts where it said He had to suffer and die in order that salvation could be accomplished. We don't know, but we know that their hearts were burning within them from the things that He told them. Christ here gives us a pattern which is to be followed by all who teach the word.  He took passages and explained them to those He was with.  That is Biblical Exposition or what we call Expository Preaching/Teaching. It is taking the scriptures word by word, verse by verse and explaining the meaning and context of each passage within each chapter contained in each book which make up context of the whole Bible. Those who skip over verses, words, or passages are cheating us of all that we should learn.  It is not about how much you go through, but how much goes into you and I.        Asaph wrote Psalms 77:12-13 which says I will meditate also of all thy work, and talk of thy doings. Your way, O God, is holy; What god is great like our God? The Psalmist Asaph was discouraged and so he began to reflect on how great God is.  He concentrated on all the good things God had done for His people in the past.  This is how we grow in our faith, we remember the past and know that God will be good to us and help us in the future. Asaph remembers all the great deeds and miracles God did even in spite of their unworthiness to receive what He had done.               2 Samuel 12:16-23 is a great hope for those who have lost little children who have not yet come to the age of accountability where they have had a chance to receive or reject Christ as Savior. In this section we see David praying and fasting in the hopes that the child would not die. The child dies and the servants are afraid to tell David because of how he has responded to the sickness.  David finally realizes the child must have died and asks the servants.  They say yes and then David goes, cleans himself up, and goes to the house of the Lord to worship Him.  The servants wonder what is going on and ask David and he tells them that as long as there was hope he fasted and prayed, but now that the child is dead he knows that it is in heaven and is okay.  He knows that the child cannot come back to him, but one day because David was an Old Testament believer he will see the child in heaven. He then comforts Bathsheba, the mother.                                                                    This is such a comfort to know those little ones are in heaven if you have lost a child and that they are better off there than they would have been here.  It still hurts, but we that believe know that one day we will see that child again. Matthew 19:14 But Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of heaven.”                               2 Samuel 12:16-24a David therefore pleaded with God for the child, and David fasted and went in and lay all night on the ground. 17 So the elders of his house arose and went to him, to raise him up from the ground. But he would not, nor did he eat food with them. 18 Then on the seventh day it came to pass that the child died. And the servants of David were afraid to tell him that the child was dead. For they said, "Indeed, while the child was alive, we spoke to him, and he would not heed our voice. How can we tell him that the child is dead? He may do some harm!" 19 When David saw that his servants were whispering, David perceived that the child was dead. Therefore, David said to his servants, "Is the child dead?" And they said, "He is dead." 20 So David arose from the ground, washed and anointed himself, and changed his clothes; and he went into the house of the LORD and worshiped. Then he went to his own house; and when he requested, they set food before him, and he ate. 21 Then his servants said to him, "What is this that you have done? You fasted and wept for the child while he was alive, but when the child died, you arose and ate food." 22 And he said, "While the child was alive, I fasted and wept; for I said, 'Who can tell whether the LORD will be gracious to me, that the child may live?' 23 "But now he is dead; why should I fast? Can I bring him back again?                   In Luke 23:13-25 Pilate has examined Jesus and says neither He nor Herod found any fault in Jesus.  Yet, who do the people want released, but a murderer named Barabbas.  His name means son of the Father, so the murdering son of the father is released in place of JESUS THE TRUE SON OF THE FATHER. This is a picture of what Jesus has done for us.  We are the ones who deserve death and hell, yet God sent His Son to take our place on the cross. Isn't this a glorious and wonderful truth that we can be forgiven, or have been forgiven if we have trusted in Christ no matter what we have done in the past.  The Father is always willing to forgive, save, and one day give us all that the Son has purchased for us. Jesus was our substitute, He died in our place, the just for the unjust. Thank God today for what He did through Jesus Christ His Son.                 Luke 23:13-25 Then Pilate, when he had called together the chief priests, the rulers, and the people, 14 said to them, "You have brought this Man to me, as one who misleads the people. Romans 5:1 Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,  2 through whom also we have access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God. Chapter 1 of Romans Paul says in verse 16 that the Gospel is the power of God unto salvation. In Chapters1-3 He declares all have sinned and are guilty before God. In chapter 4 Paul shows that David and Abraham were justified by faith not works In chapter 5 Paul starts out in the first 11 verses showing us that since we are saved by faith we are kept by Jesus' power not by our own works and Paul gives us 11 benefits of trusting Christ Uses the words through Jesus Christ 6 times in verses 1, 2, 9, 10, 11—Twice in verse 11. Romans 5:1-11                                       Having been Justified: Justification is the pardoning of guilt and the penalty of sin (legally being declared righteous because Jesus paid the penalty for our sin) 1.     V-1 We have Peace with God:         John 16:33a These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace We have declared ourselves at war with God because of our sinful rebellion which means He is at war with us too James 4:4 Adulterers and adulteresses! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity or hostility with God? Whoever therefore wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God. ·       But if you have trusted Christ that war is ended Phil 4:6-7 Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; 7 and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. 2.     V-2 We have Access to God: Or an introduction to Grace through Jesus Christ The word access means to be ushered into the presence of royalty, Jesus through his sacrifice on the cross ushers us into the very presence of God. It also means a harbor or haven, we are safe now in the arms of God just like a ship in the harbor. Eph 2:18 For through Him we both have access by one Spirit to the Father. 3.     V-2 We have Standing before God: A permanent secure position in grace Eph 2:13 But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ., 19 Now, therefore, you are no longer strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, Heb 10:19-22 19 Therefore, brethren, having boldness to enter the Holiest by the blood of Jesus, 20 by a new and living way which He consecrated for us, through the veil, that is, His flesh, 21 and having a High Priest over the house of God, 22 let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. Rev. 1:6 He has made us priests and kings 1Peter 5:12 By Silvanus, our faithful brother as I consider him, I have written to you briefly, exhorting and testifying that this is the true grace of God in which you stand. 4.     V-2 We can rejoice in the Hope of the Glory of God: 1Peter 1:3-5 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His abundant mercy has begotten us again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 to an inheritance incorruptible and undefiled and that does not fade away, reserved in heaven for you, 5 who are kept by the power of God through faith for salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. ·       A hope of heaven because Jesus paid the price and God promised to save us if we believe that he paid for our sins. Hebrews 6:19 This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast, and which enters the Presence behind the veil, 20 where the forerunner has entered for us, even Jesus, having become High Priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.

             God has only one way of doing things, that is the way He prescribes.  Oftentimes we try to accomplish God's will using whatever methods we think best or worst of all we do it like the world would do it.  When God wants something done He wants it done the way He says and if not then it will not accomplish His will.  I remember a guy who told me one day he was glad I was not telling him it was my way or the highway.  I told him that a person who designs something makes it to work only one way and it will not work if it is done any other way.  It is the same with God, He designed things a certain way, gave us the instruction book (the Bible) to tell us how to do it and the Holy Spirit to guide us and lead us.  So, I told him it was never my way, I was only trying to teach what the Bible said, it is God's way or the highway, anything else is not right.  Which highway are we on, ours or God's?                  In 2 Samuel Chapters 3-5 we see how David grows stronger and stronger and eventually becomes the King over all of Israel and rules for 40 years.  It was not God's plan for them to have a king, but if they were to have a king it should be a man like David who wanted to please God.  He was very flawed and made many mistakes, but God used him anyway as He does with us.  The reason David grew stronger and stronger was because God was behind it all.  When a man, a ministry, or a church is the plan God is going to use to do His will there is no use in anyone trying to stop it.  God's plans can never be thwarted and He will accomplish what He wants.  He will use us as long as we are available and seeking His will for our lives. It is amazing the people that God uses to do His will, most of whom are not thought of as the people that God would use.  Are we one of those people who God wants to use?  Are we seeking Him with our whole heart and desiring His will for our lives and the lives of His people? Let us seek Him today and see what He wants to do in our lives and those around us.            2 Samuel 3:1 Now there was a long war between the house of Saul and the house of David.               In Luke 22 we see Jesus telling the disciples all that they would go through leading up to and after His death on the cross.  He also says that they will deny Him. Peter says he will never do that, but will die for Jesus.  We know that Jesus says Peter will deny Him 3 times and then will be strengthened through the prayers of Jesus to come back and be the leader again of the disciples.  Lastly, we see Peter along with the rest of the disciples is sleeping while Jesus is praying to the Father about going to the cross.  Jesus tells them to rise and pray lest they enter into temptation.  So, we see Peter and the rest of the disciples deserting Jesus and Peter especially fails as Jesus predicted. Why is this?  Because they did not do what they should have been doing, Praying! Why do we fail, because we are instructed to pray to God to not let us be tempted and to pass the test when they do come.  The Bible over and over says we will be tempted, but God will give us the strength to endure if we will only ask and be prepared for those times.  Are we praying and are we prepared?  What verses do you have memorized to help you when the devil comes with his lies and deceit?  That is what Jesus did when tempted, He used the scriptures.  Let us be always ready and not fail and fall when temptation comes our way. Luke 22:31-34,46 And the Lord said, "Simon, Simon! Indeed, Satan has asked for you, that he may sift you as wheat. 32 "But I have prayed for you, that your faith should not fail; and when you have returned to Me, strengthen your brethren." 33 But he said to Him, "Lord, I am ready to go with You, both to prison and to death." 34 Then He said, "I tell you, Peter, the rooster shall not crow this day before you will deny three times that you know Me.", 46 Then He said to them, "Why do you sleep?                 In Luke 21 right after the woman gives in the temple, the disciples comment on the beauty of the temple and Jesus begins to tell them that the temple and all will be destroyed.  He gives them the signs of what is going to happen and a way to determine it is coming.  He tells them that we need to persevere as Christians during these difficult times and not to fail and fall because of the difficulties.  He then tells them that all of these things, that is all He has created will pass away, but His word the Bible and all that He spoke to them will never fail or go away.  In all the difficulties that seem to be getting worse and worse, aren't you thankful that you can trust in the Word of God?  It is like the little boy who was reading a book and the hero was in trouble and his mother called him to lunch.  He said hold on a minute and he looked to the end of the book and saw that the hero was okay.  We too can turn to the end of the Bible and read it and know that it will turn out exactly like Jesus (God) said it would and trust in Him that all will be okay in the end.  Amen! “Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will not pass away.              This familiar story in Luke 21 gives us a few things we should take away from it.  First, it is not how much you give, it is the heart with which you give it.  Secondly, did that gift you gave cost you anything?  In other words, was it something that you sacrificed or gave up to give? Thirdly, we see that the system was set up so that it literally trumpeted the amount someone was giving as the money flowed down the tube making noise.  I still believe the Bible teaches that we should give God at least 10% of everything we have including our time and abilities.  So, I guess the question is what do we do with our time, abilities, and money?  Are we giving God all that we should because we love Him and want to honor and serve Him with all that we have? If not, why not? The Gospel and Justification The Gospel is the power of God for salvation (Romans 1:16). All have sinned and are guilty before God (Chapters 1-3). David and Abraham were justified by faith, not by works (Chapter 4). Justification provides 11 benefits of trusting Christ (Chapter 5). Emphasis on the love and grace of God in sending Christ for sinners. Justification by Faith Verse 1: Justification brings peace with God through Jesus Christ. Justification refers to being declared righteous, as if one never sinned. It is a once-for-all verdict based on faith in Christ. Benefits of Justification Peace with God Trusting Christ ends the war between God and humans (James 4:4). Believers can find peace in all situations (Philippians 4:6-7). Access to God Believers have been ushered into the presence of God (Ephesians 2:18). This access signifies safety and an ongoing relationship with God. Standing before God Believers enjoy a secure position in God's grace (Ephesians 2:13). They hold a privileged status as God's special people. Rejoicing in Hope Christians boast in the hope of God's glory, unlike worldly boasting. Hope is a confident expectation grounded in faith. Glory in Tribulations Believers can rejoice in trials as they lead to growth and strength. Difficulty does not negate hope or promise of glory in the future. Growth Through Trials Tribulations produce perseverance, character, and hope (Romans 5:3-4). Character is developed through testing, akin to refining metal. Hope remains firm because of God's love, which the Holy Spirit has poured into believers' hearts (Romans 5:5). The Love of God God's love is given to believers through the Holy Spirit. This love provides strength during trials and tribulations. The Holy Spirit The Holy Spirit indicates salvation and provides peace and strength. Transition from faith to hope to love is significant in the believer's life. Christ's Sacrifice Christ died for helpless sinners, showing God's love (Romans 5:6-8). His love was demonstrated while believers were still in sin. Pardon from Wrath Justification changes a believer's status (righteous) and state (becoming more like Christ). If God justified sinners, he is certainly able to save them from future wrath (Romans 5:9-10). Argument of 'how much more' is used to emphasize the assurance of salvation and reconciliation with God through Christ. Before We Were Enemies with God We have reconciliation with God through Jesus' death and atoning work. Reconciliation focuses on restoring the relationship between two previously opposing parties. Colossians 1:19-22 emphasizes that we were once alienated and enemies but are now reconciled through Jesus' death. The passage stresses that we are the offending party, not God. Human hostility towards God is active and personal, despite professing love for Him. Salvation Through Christ's Life We are saved not only by Jesus' death but also by His resurrection. Hebrews 7:25 states that Jesus intercedes for us, saving those who come to God through Him. Paul discusses how, if we were reconciled as enemies, we will be completely saved by Christ's resurrected life. Salvation is present and future because Christ is alive and actively saving us. Joy in God and from God Habakkuk 3:18 encourages rejoicing in the God of salvation. Our joy comes from God's grace, not our own merit (Psalms 45:7). Believers can rejoice now due to reconciliation, which brings about a relationship with God characterized by righteousness and life. Romans 14:17 explains the kingdom of God involves righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit. Rejoice in God In light of present circumstances (Romans 5:1-5): We have peace with God now. We have a sure hope. In light of the foundation of salvation (Romans 5:6-8): Human love is fickle. God's love is sacrificial. In light of the bright future (Romans 5:9-11): We will not face God's wrath. We will be saved by His life. We have reconciliation now. Illustration: Clarity in God's Message Fog can obscure our view and make us feel isolated. Historical example of British troops misunderstanding a message during a fog: initial message was despairful but later revealed victory. Similar misinterpretations occurred with the message of Jesus' death. Romans 8:37 reminds us we are more than conquerors through Christ's love, urging us to live in His power. Conclusion Chapter 5 of Romans emphasizes faith, love, access to God, and the hope found in the Gospel.   What are your eyes fixed on?                  In Psalm 73 we see the writer has taken his eyes off of God and put them on the world and what he perceives is going on.  It is easy sometimes to look around and see what the wicked are doing and it looks like everything is going their way and they are living the good life in spite of the evil they do. They reject God and think that He cannot and will not do anything to them for the way they are living. This Psalmist was not looking in the right place as we often don't either.  He finally goes into the temple of God and is shown the end of these wicked people.  He sees that it might look like they have it all now, but unfortunately this is the best that it will ever be for them.  They may get it all now, but pay later as the Midas commercial used to say.  You can pay me now or you can pay me later.  We who trust in Christ may suffer for following Him now, but it will be worth it all in the end as Romans 8:18 says, For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us. The Psalmist is ashamed of himself for thinking all of these things and doubting the goodness of God.  Let us not be like this Psalmist who got his eyes on the world and was disillusioned, but let us be like him in the last part of the Psalm where he says in verses 25-26 Whom have I in heaven but You? And there is none upon earth that I desire besides You. 26 My flesh and my heart fail; But God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. Amen!!           Surely God is good to Israel, To those who are pure in heart! In Luke 20 Jesus has upset the religious atmosphere of the temple and therefore the leaders question His authority.  He then tells one of the more familiar parables about the owner of the vineyard who keeps sending people to get some of the fruit.  This is a picture of God sending prophet after prophet to Israel to get them to do what is proper in leading the people in a right way to God.  They keep killing the prophets and finally they kill the owner's son who is a picture of Jesus being killed. We might not be in danger today, but when we stand up for the truth when a church or leader starts to go astray we might be called heresy hunters or trouble makers.  When that happens we know that things have gone extremely wrong.  In other countries they do kill those who tell the truth about Jesus and one day they might lock us up, take what we own away, or even kill us if we don't begin to stand up for the truth today.  There is a famine in the land for the truth Isaiah 59:4 No one calls for justice, Nor does any plead for truth. They trust in empty words and speak lies; They conceive evil and bring forth iniquity. We must take a stand now.  Ultimately Jesus will crush those who go against Him and His people and in the end He wins, but God will hold us responsible for failing to stand up for HIS TRUTH.           In 1 Samuel chapters 9-10 we saw Saul looking for donkeys and Samuel the prophet had been sent by God to find the man selected by Him to be King.  Who should he find but Saul who was physically impressive, tall, and handsome. At this time, he would have been in his late 20s (cf. 13:1). Isn't this what we always look for in a leader?  God gave the people just what they wanted. Unfortunately, we often look for the qualities we think are important in leaders, but God has different ideas on what they should be. We look at all the things people seem to be and God looks at the heart (1Samuel 16:7).  David was not the man they would have picked to be their leader, but God knew what was inside of him and picked David because of that. Are we guilty of doing this with people, especially those we look to inside the church to be the ones who lead us and guide us in the most important area of our life?  We need to make sure of what is on the inside before we pick leaders and make sure what is inside of us is right with God too. Are the qualities we have the ones God looks for or are they the ones that make us what the world wants to see?                   1Samuel 16:7 But the LORD said to Samuel, "Do not look at his appearance or at the height of his stature, because I have refused him.          In 1 Samuel Saul was told by God to completely destroy the Amalekites, but decided that he apparently knew better than God what to do.  Part of this was based on the fact that he was not really a leader, but was more concerned with what the people wanted than what God did. When God tells us to do something He wants it done exactly like He said to do it, to not do that is disobedience and rebellion.  It is the same today, the word of God tells us what to do and how to do it and through the Holy Spirit uses prayer and the word to lead us and guide us.  God doesn't care about our sacrifices. He cares about our obedience. The Prophet Samuel was rightly grieved when He saw Saul whom God had put in charge to lead His people fall from grace because of his wanting to be popular and liked.  There is one standard, it doesn't matter who we are, God's word does not change because of popular opinion.  Are we going to be like Samuel and cry out to God for our pastors and leaders and hold them accountable or reap the consequences when they fall because they compromise like everyone else seems to be doing? Are we going to completely obey or think we can do part of what God says and it will be alright?                1Samuel 15:9-11,22-23 1Sa 15:9 But Saul and the people spared Agag and the best of the sheep, the oxen, the fatlings, the lambs, and all that was good, and were unwilling to utterly destroy them. But everything despised and worthless, that they utterly destroyed. 10 Now the word of the LORD came to Samuel, saying, 11 "I greatly regret that I have set up Saul as king, for he has turned back from following Me, and has not performed My commandments." And it grieved Samuel, and he cried out to the LORD all night. 11:22 Then Samuel said: "Has the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, As in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, And to heed than the fat of rams. 23 For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, And stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry.               In 1 Samuel 12:23-24 Samuel did what any good leader should do. He knew that the people had rebelled and sinned against God, but this could not be undone.  Instead he encouraged the people to follow the Lord with all their heart and remember all the good things God had done for them.  Samuel also said that God would not abandon them and he would not either for what they had done, but he would teach them and pray for them as all good leaders and Christians should do for others who have strayed.  We need to, if we have strayed remember what God has done for us and remember He will never leave us nor forsake us (Hebrews 13:5).  Also, we don't want to shoot our wounded, but we need to come alongside those who have strayed, encourage them to do all these things and pray for them.  The church is a hospital for sinners and we need to remember that. Only Jesus The Great Physician can heal us and forgive us of our sin.                  "Moreover, as for me, far be it from me that I should sin against the LORD in ceasing to pray for you; but I will teach you the good and the right way.                 In 1 Samuel 10:1-6 we see Samuel anointing Saul as the king that the people wanted. Samuel spoke of three signs that would show that Saul had been picked and anointed in accordance with God's will.  The first of these would have given Saul the confidence in God's ability to control the people.  The second would have shown him that the people would accept him as king and the third would have shown him that he had the Holy Spirit enabling from God to lead, guide, and do all that God wanted him to do for Israel. Unfortunately, these lessons did not sink into Saul's heart.  He should have learned God could solve his problems, supply his needs, and give him the power he needed for service. God calls us to tasks and gives us the ability to do them, but we have to trust Him implicitly if we are going to accomplish God's will for our lives and the task He has given us.  Remember, God doesn't call the enabled, but when He calls us to a task He enables us to do it.  Let us trust Him today for anything and everything that He calls us to do for Him.                    1 Samuel 10:1-6 Then Samuel took a flask of oil and poured it on his head, and kissed him and said: "Is it not because the LORD has anointed you commander over His inheritance? 2 "When you have departed from me today, you will find two men by Rachel's tomb in the territory of Benjamin at Zelzah; and they will say to you, 'The donkeys which you went to look for have been found.                 In this last chapter of Ruth, we see Boaz is a picture or type of Jesus Christ. This reminds us that to be a redeemer He had to become related to us before He could redeem us. He became flesh and blood so He could die for us on the cross (Heb. 2:14–15). In order to qualify, the kinsman redeemer also had to be able to pay the redemption price. Ruth and Naomi were too poor to redeem themselves, but Boaz had all the resources necessary to set them free. When it comes to the redemption of sinners, no one but Jesus Christ is rich enough to pay the price. Indeed, the payment of money can never set sinners free; it is the shedding of the precious blood of Christ that has accomplished redemption (1 Peter 1:18). There was a third qualification: The kinsman redeemer had to be willing to redeem. As we see in this chapter, Boaz was free to purchase both the property and a wife. We become the property of Jesus and His bride at the new birth.  Aren't you thankful that Jesus qualified in all ways to be able to redeem us (buy us back) from the slavery of sin? We can be thankful for this whole book that shows us that no matter how bad things look, Jesus is in the background and can turn our lives around if we are willing to let Him save us and take control.  Amen!                   Ruth 4:9-12 And Boaz said to the elders and all the people, "You are witnesses this day that I have bought all that was Elimelech's, and all that was Chilion's and Mahlon's, from the hand of Naomi. 10 "Moreover, Ruth the Moabitess, the widow of Mahlon, I have acquired as my wife, to perpetuate the name of the dead through his inheritance, that the name of the dead may not be cut off from among his brethren and from his position at the gate.           In the first few verses of the book of Ruth we see 3 fatal mistakes.  First Elimelech takes his family down to the land of their enemies. He had a family to take care of and yet he walked by faith instead of sight, then he focused on the physical not the spiritual, and lastly he should have known that it was better to be hungry in Bethlehem in the will of God, rather than be full in the land of their enemies (Moab). These fatal mistakes cost this family almost everything.  First, Elimelech dies, then his wife Naomi allows their boys to marry women from Moab which was forbidden, and because of this they die too.  Naomi ends up with two pagan women in a land where she doesn't belong without any way to survive without a man to take care of her and the other two women. But thank God this is not the end of the story, just the tragic beginning.   Lessons It's been said that crises reveal what we are. They also make us what we are in God's plan 1 Peter 1 and James 1 says count it all joy and let patience have it's perfect work. Don't get out of the trial, learn what God wants you to from the trial. You don't want to be anywhere out of the will of God. It's better to starve to death in God's will rather than be somewhere He doesn't want you to be. When we disobey we put others and ourselves in danger of God's discipline and all kinds of bad things can happen. We can lose everything. God loves it when we come home to Him.                 Ruth 1:1-5 Now it came to pass, in the days when the judges ruled, that there was a famine in the land. And a certain man of Bethlehem, Judah, went to dwell in the country of Moab, he and his wife and his two sons. 2 The name of the man was Elimelech, the name of his wife was Naomi, and the names of his two sons were Mahlon and Chilion-Ephrathites of Bethlehem, Judah. And they went to the country of Moab and remained there. 3 Then Elimelech, Naomi's husband, died; and she was left, and her two sons. 4 Now they took wives of the women of Moab: the name of the one was Orpah, and the name of the other Ruth. And they dwelt there about ten years. 5 Then both Mahlon and Chilion also died; so the woman survived her two sons and her husband. In the midst of all the craziness going on we have seen that many areas are shutting down everything except essential businesses. My wife saw that liquor stores are considered essential. I made the comment that the world cannot get through a crisis without something that comes in a bottle, a pill or liquor bottle or some other crutch. We who are believers have something way greater. Jesus said in John 14:17 Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. We have the promise that He is enough even though the world may be falling apart, we must not let the world make us anxious or stressed. Matthew 11:28 Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.… Paul said in Philippians 4:6-9 to not be anxious about anything but take it all to God and the peace that passes all understanding will guard your hearts and minds. He also said not to think on and fill your mind with the bad things but to dwell on what is good. Proverbs 6:23 says For the commandment is a lamp; and the law is light; and reproofs of instruction are the way of life:) Someone told me after hearing a sermon that they never knew it could feel so good to have their toes stepped on.  That is what the Bible, the Commandment does for us and to us.  It shows us the right way to live by the light it gives to walk in the ways of God and it also tells us when we are doing wrong.  Are we sensitive to the Word of God and the Spirit's leading when it tells us to do something or not to do something?  May we ever be diligent to hear the word of God and respond to what it says.  Amen.     John 14:6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. the love of the Heavenly Father               Luke 15 is one of the most famous parables of Jesus.  We see the story that is commonly called the prodigal son, but is really the story of the loving father.  We see this young man asking for his inheritance before the father is dead and then living for the world with all of his might.  Finally, he is at the bottom having spent all his money and having to eat pig food.  He decides to go home to his father and beg for forgiveness, but finds that the father has been waiting on and looking for him every day, hoping he would come back. This is the story of all of us that have wayward kids, we hope and pray that one day they will come back so we can show them how much we love them.  But this story is more than that, it is the love of a Heavenly Father who every day is looking for those who are living for the world to finally look up and want that forgiveness and salvation that can only be given when one realizes that the love of the Father is better than anything this world has to offer.  Do you know that love?  Have you come to the one who loves you and will forgive you and receive you as His own no matter what you have done?  Come, turn from your sins and ask Him to forgive you today, He will do it as the Bible tells us over and over again. Don't wait, do it now.                 “So he got up and came to his father.            Luke 14:26-27 Jesus said "If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and his own life also, he cannot be My disciple. 27 "And whoever does not bear his cross and come after Me cannot be My disciple. In verses 12-24 Jesus gave a gracious invitation to all who would come and trust in Him and asked them to do so. Salvation is a free gift given to all who will receive it, but living for Jesus is costly. So many preachers and Christians today teach that salvation is free, but leave out the personal responsibility of living for Jesus that comes with salvation.  In the last section Jesus tells several parables about the cost, one involves loving Jesus more than family relationships, another involves the hardships that come with following Him, and the last involves being willing to give up all to follow Him.  What Jesus is saying to us is that if we are to be a successful disciple and shows we are a true Christian is that it means that Jesus be the number one priority in our life. He will be if we are really Christians.        It is so sad that we live in a world so obsessed with image. I heard someone say, I love cocky, whereas God hates it. That is what is being taught to children and adults in all areas of life. There is nothing wrong with looking and doing your best, but not when it is only about that. Everywhere you look it is talked about and promoted over and over again.  Christians build themselves up too and make their lives look like they are perfect and they have it all together.  It is sad to look around and realize that everyone is obsessed with looking like they are the best.  But that is not what God likes, He does hate it.  What do people see when they look at us?  Proverbs 6 says God Hates Pride. Here are just a few verses Proverbs 3:34 Surely He scorns the scornful, But gives grace to the humble.                James 4:10 Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up.           Luke 14:11 says “For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.”                       Proverbs 6:16 These six things the LORD hates, Yes, seven are an abomination to Him: 17 A proud look, A lying tongue, Hands that shed innocent blood,            Proverbs 11:2 When pride comes, then comes shame; But with the humble is wisdom.      Proverbs 16:19 Better to be of a humble spirit with the lowly, Than to divide the spoil with the proud.  Ro 12:16 Be of the same mind toward one another. Do not set your mind on high things, but associate with the humble. Do not be wise in your own opinion.    James 4:6 But He gives more grace. Therefore He says: "God resists the proud, But gives grace to the humble."                James 4:10 Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up.     1Peter 5:5 Likewise you younger people, submit yourselves to your elders.          In Judges 16 we see Samson, the most famous of the Judges of Israel falling to his lowest level of sin.  He has done almost everything a person can do that is being used of God and yet God has been patient with him and not let him be consumed by his sin. Finally, he is tempted a third time by a woman and completely fails in his vow to God.  Samson is a picture of the Christian who completely and fatally falls into sin James 1:13-16.  He fell prey to Delilah's charms and was captured after God's patience finally ran out and He left Samson on his own.  First, we see that Samson was blinded physically after having been spiritually blind, then they bound him picturing his being bound in sin, then he grinds in the mill picturing the daily grind of being captive to sin and finally it leads to his death when he pulls down the pillars and dies.  It has been said that sin will take you further than you want to go, keep you longer than you wanted to stay, and cost you more than you ever wanted to pay.  What is it that area in your life where you are weak and are tempted to play around with sin?  We all have that area in our lives and the devil and his demons know what it is.  Let us not be like Samson and let sin take us captive and cost us everything that is dear to us.                       Judges 16:16-21 And it came to pass, when she pestered him daily with her words and pressed him, so that his soul was vexed to death, 17 that he told her all his heart, and said to her, "No razor has ever come upon my head, for I have been a Nazirite to God from my mother's womb. If I am shaven, then my strength will leave me, and I shall become weak, and be like any other man." When Delilah saw that he had told her all his heart, she sent and called for the lords of the Philistines, saying, "Come up once more, for he has told me all his heart." So the lords of the Philistines came up to her and brought the money in their hand. 19 Then she lulled him to sleep on her knees, and called for a man and had him shave off the seven locks of his head. Then she began to torment him, and his strength left him. 20 And she said, "The Philistines are upon you, Samson!" So he awoke from his sleep, and said, "I will go out as before, at other times, and shake myself free!" But he did not know that the LORD had departed from him. 21 Then the Philistines took him and put out his eyes, and brought him down to Gaza.         I don't know why most people think you can be saved by being good enough, doing more good than bad, and by keeping the 10 commandments or just believing that Jesus existed, but the law was only given to show us that we can never be good enough on our own that's why we need Jesus Christ. I don't know how that lie got started and I even believed that at one time.  Even when I go to the prisons, they have many programs to straighten people out, but the only correction that is going on there or anywhere else is if Lord does it.
