The moment that Jesus Christ came into us we trusted him as lord and savior. We were spiritually dead, but it symbolizes we become alive again. Remember when Adam and Eve died in the garden? When they ate the fruit, what happened? They died spiritually, right? They didn't die physically. Later on, they died spiritually. Because all of a sudden, what happened? They were scared. They hid from God. And at that moment, God kicked them out of the garden because he didn't want them to live in sin forever. Send a textToday we look a little closer at the three do you love Me statements and what they mean to us in practical terms of what we need to do and how we need to live in light of these questions. Peter is like us in that he is not willing to totally commit to something unless we are sure WE can pull it off. So, Jesus gives a prophecy of how Peter will die. He tells Peter that he will live to be an old man and then they will put him on a cross. That he will glorify God through his death. That is just like God to let us know, yes you have failed, yes you are hesitant to fully commit now because of your failure, but I am going to use you anyway. Also, I want to let you know that when it comes time to stand up for me, you will not fail, you will not make the same mistake again and you will ultimately do the will of God as you are supposed to when it really counts. 2Co 9:15 Thanks be to God for His indescribable gift! Send a text In Mark 3:29 Jesus said "but he who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit never has forgiveness, but is subject to eternal condemnation" This saying of Jesus has caused many people great anxiety throughout the history of the church. Many have wondered if they have committed the unpardonable sin. Concern that one may have committed it is a good indication that one probably has not. The way to avoid committing the unpardonable sin is to believe the testimony that the Holy Spirit has given about Jesus in Scripture, namely, that He is the Christ (i.e., the divine Messiah, cf. 1 John 5:1). In other words, the only unforgiveable sin is the sin of rejecting Christ as Savior. If you die and have not trusted Christ as your Savior, then you will end up in hell. That is the unforgiveable sin. If you haven't trust Him today. Mark 3:28-30 "Assuredly, I say to you, all sins will be forgiven the sons of men, and whatever blasphemies they may utter; 29 "but he who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit never has forgiveness, but is subject to eternal condemnation" -- 30 because they said, "He has an unclean spirit." George Sweeting wrote, It is a fearful thing that people can be consumed by their own lust. Only God's grace keeps us from the wolf's fate. Only God's grace keeps us from doing to ourselves what that wolf does to himself. I think about the sharks, you know, they go crazy when they get in the water, right? And they attack them. Anybody like to watch Shark Week? I always like to watch that. But those sharks, man, when they smell that blood, they attack anything. And they literally roll their eyelids back and they're blind because they can't see. And they just attack anything and everything around them. Sometimes they hurt themselves or they destroy, they bite other animals or whatever's in their way. Bust up cages or get stuck in cages or who knows what they do. They're so big and powerful they're hard to be hurt. But they bite each other and attack anything that gets in their way. And that's what happens to people when they don't know Christ. When they live for themselves, they attack anything and everything around them. Mark 8:36 "For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? You know, the problem is we just don't know the power we have within us. That's the thing. Paul said I can do what? All things through Christ who strengthens me. 2 Corinthians 12, he said when I am weak, I am strong, right? Because why? Christ's power dwells in me. There's so many other places. Philippians 2.12, he talks about that. I was just trying to remember that verse this morning because my pastor quoted it yesterday, but he said, he talks about, you know, that it is work out your own salvation with fear and trembling because it is God who wills to do of his good pleasure, right? And over and over and over again, Ephesians 3.20 says that God is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all we ask or think according to His power that works in us. We've got Holy Spirit power. We've got God's power living inside of us. Mark 8:36 "For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? I remember the story, what was it, about one of the future queen of England or something? They never did tell her that she was going to be the Queen of England because they were worried if they told her who she was that she would begin acting up and acting out because of who she was. And the one person decided to tell her who she was and she says, now that I know who I am, now I will live that out. And that's the Christian life. That's what we're supposed to do once we know who we are. The Bible says that we're called what? Christians if we know Christ. That means little Christ. It means we live like Christ, right? And so for a person to say they know Christ and to live like the devil, that gives God a bad reputation. Mark 8:36 "For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? John says in chapter 1:36 And looking at Jesus as He walked, he said, "Behold the Lamb of God!" In the Old Testament many lambs died to cover sin, and even as Jesus was dying on the cross they were sacrificing thousands of lambs as required on Passover. The sad thing is they did not recognize Jesus as the TRUE LAMB OF GOD and instead were still looking at some cheap imitation. I hope you are not expecting some cheap substitute to save you. Only Jesus can. Trust in Him today. 1 Corinthians 5:7 For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed. Romans 10:9-11 that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. 11 For the Scripture says, "Whoever believes on Him will not be put to shame." John 1:29,36 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, "Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! 36 And looking at Jesus as He walked, he said, "Behold the Lamb of God!" Send a textIn this very familiar section of Scripture we see Jesus telling the disciples after they have fished all night to cast the net again and they catch so many fish they almost sink the boat. They need to recognize without Him they can do nothing, as do we. Then He feeds the disciples with fish He has created for their breakfast in the same fashion He multiplied the fish and the loaves at the feeding of the 5000 men and their families. He then proceeds to restore Peter by asking him three times do you love me. That is the question of all time, do we love Jesus more than others, more than things, more than anything. As the old song says I would rather have Jesus than silver or gold, than riches untold, I rather have Jesus than anything this world affords. Is this true of you? David was calling on the people to experience as he had the goodness of the Lord for themselves by relying on Him during their times of difficulties. In Psalms 34 verses 4 through 8 David witnesses to us what God does for His children. He saves us, He keeps us, and He satisfies us. We cannot do these things for ourselves but God can. This is a promise not of comfortable circumstances, but it is a promise of God's care for us who belong to Him. Have you tasted and seen that the Lord is good? In John 1:29 it says, the next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, "Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! John the Baptist presents Jesus as the one who will die in our place to take away our sin. One man says in the Old Testament the question is 'Where is the lamb?'. Here he says it twice in John 1 and in all the Gospels that is the emphasis "Behold the Lamb of God!" In Revelation 5:12 those that know Him as Savior will sing "Worthy is the Lamb!” He speaks here of Jesus as that perfect, sinless, substitute who would die in our place as taking away the “sin” not sins of the world. I believe he is referring to the one unforgivable sin John 16:8 "And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: 9 "of sin, because they do not believe in Me; have you believed On him and trusted in him, if not do it today. Send a textJohn 21:1 After these things Jesus showed Himself again to the disciples at the Sea of Tiberias, and in this way He showed Himself: 2 Simon Peter, Thomas called the Twin, Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two others of His disciples were together. 3 Simon Peter said to them, "I am going fishing." They said to him, "We are going with you also." They went out and immediately got into the boat, and that night they caught nothing. 4 But when the morning had now come, Jesus stood on the shore; yet the disciples did not know that it was Jesus. 5 Then Jesus said to them, "Children, have you any food?" They answered Him, "No." 6 And He said to them, "Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some." So they cast, and now they were not able to draw it in because of the multitude of fish. 7 Therefore that disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, "It is the Lord!" Now when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his outer garment (for he had removed it), and plunged into the sea. 8 But the other disciples came in the little boat (for they were not far from land, but about two hundred cubits), dragging the net with fish. 9 Then, as soon as they had come to land, they saw a fire of coals there, and fish laid on it, and bread. 10 Jesus said to them, "Bring some of the fish which you have just caught." 11 Simon Peter went up and dragged the net to land, full of large fish, one hundred and fifty-three; and although there were so many, the net was not broken. This Chapter is here for 5 reasons:1. Helps us understand Peters prominent position in the church2. How are we to relate to the risen Christ3. Give us a Balance between Nurturing the saved and winning the lost4. Refutes the false rumor that Jesus coming back before John died5. Clear expression of how to love Christ. If you love me keep my commandmentsWe are blessed by Laboring with the Lord. The disciples have learned how to cooperate with one another and how to obey Jesus. What examples for us to follow as we seek to “catch fish” for Jesus Christ! There are “fish” all around us. If we obey His directions, we will catch the fish. Send us a text Mark begins by telling us that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and that He was a messenger of the Gospel, but also fully God. He then tells us about the prophesied John the Baptist who is only listed as a messenger with a voice. John was sent to prepare the way for Jesus and introduce Him to the world. One man said John was just a newspaper boy saying read all about it, Jesus is coming. John was just the messenger, not the message. It is all about Jesus. He tells them to make His paths straight. When a king was coming they would straighten all the roads, remove all the valleys, and make a clear path for them to enter the area. This means we are to clean up our life, straighten out all the crooked things we are doing and make it easy for King Jesus to lead us and guide us in the way we should go. Of course this can only be done when Jesus is on the throne of our life. Who is on your throne? Mark 1:1-3 The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. 2 As it is written in the Prophets: "Behold, I send My messenger before Your face, Who will prepare Your way before You." 3 "The voice of one crying in the wilderness: 'Prepare the way of the LORD; Make His paths straight.'" John does not give us any genealogy, no birth narrative, no manger scene, he just cuts to the heart of the matter when he introduces the book with the statement that in the beginning was the Word, the Word was with God and the Word was God. And if that is not enough in verse two he repeats it again. In verse three we see that Jesus created everything. Have you considered the wonderful ways our world works together, the beauty and order of it all? I remember the food chain the solar system, and the hydrological cycle from school, but it really comes alive when you see the beauty and wonder of it all by looking at it through the lens of the Bible. This verse helps you to see the world through the lens of creation rather than the lie of evolution. When you see a watch you know someone made it, it is the same with everything in our world and universe, without a creator it would not exist and it amazes me how you could see it all and believe that it HAPPENED by chance. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being (John 1:1-3) NO way it happened by chance. If you can't believe in the beginning your Bible is worthless. Mark 8:36 "For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Send us a textMatthew 28:18-20 says And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Matthew has wanted us to understand the authority of Jesus throughout his whole Gospel. Now that Jesus has been resurrected and done all that He was tasked with to forgive us and save us that authority is in full force. The disciples had a limited task of sharing the Gospel with Israel before this time and now the time for them and all believers to go and make disciples has been started. This means we are to share the Good News, the Gospel that is in 1 Corinthians 15:3-4, that Jesus' death, burial, and resurrection is what paid for our sins. Is this the most important goal of our life? It should be because that is why Jesus when He saved us left us here, so we can tell others who He is and what He has done in our lives. In Luke 24:44-46 Jesus reminds His disciples of all that He has taught them concerning His fulfilling all that was written in the 3 major divisions of the Old Testament, namely the Law, the Prophets, and the Psalms. He tells them that this fulfillment was a necessity. He then opens their understanding of the scriptures which means He through the Holy Spirit gave them full understanding of all that He taught them concerning why He had to suffer, die, be buried and rise the third day. Do you know why Jesus had to do these things? It was so we could be saved. Unless He accomplished all of these things we could never be saved (1 Corinthians 15:3-4). That is why when people add to this and say anything else saves you they are to be considered as heretics. Jesus paid it all. Note this, He again did what we talked about yesterday in explaining the Scriptures. Unless it is explained and the Holy Spirit gives us understanding we will never understand. Even the disciples didn't most of the time before Jesus came back from the grave. Are you depending on God and His Holy Spirit to help you understand the scriptures? Pray and ask God to help you as you read. Jesus said to them, “These are My words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that all things which are written about Me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled.” Then He opened their minds to understand the Scriptures. 46 Then He said to them, "Thus it is written, and thus it was necessary for the Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead the third day, (Luke 24:44-46) Mark 8:36 "For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Send us a textJesus says that when His disciples go with the message of salvation, some people will believe & others will not. Reaction to their ministry would be the same as reaction to His had been. He viewed their forgiving & retaining the sins of their hearers as the actions of God's agents. If anyone believed the Gospel, they could tell the believers that God had forgiven their sins. If they disbelieved, they could tell them that God had not forgiven but retained their sins. Jesus had done this & now His disciples would continue to do it. Their ministry would be a continuation of His ministry. This also applies to all of Jesus' disciples since Jesus was still talking about the disciples' mission. Mark 8:36 "For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Send us a textMatthew 27:50 says And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice, and yielded up His spirit. Here we see Jesus crying out in agony in taking the sin debt of all humanity on Himself. Then as He has done all that was needed in order for our sins to be forgiven He gives up His life. No one took it from Him, He gave it up for our sins. At this point the veil of the temple tears from top to bottom to show the way to heaven through Christ was open to all. Many Old Testament saints came out of the graves as a picture of the future resurrection of all believers. Then the most incredible thing happened, the soldiers and others witnessing this came to the conclusion and publicly testified for the first time the point that Matthew has been trying to get across in all of his gospel and what God wants us to understand, that Jesus truly was the Son of God. Have we truly believed and trusted in that for our forgiveness and salvation? Matthew 27:50-54 And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice, and yielded up His spirit. 51 Then, behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom; and the earth quaked, and the rocks were split, 52 and the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised; 53 and coming out of the graves after His resurrection, they went into the holy city and appeared to many. 54 So when the centurion and those with him, who were guarding Jesus, saw the earthquake and the things that had happened, they feared greatly, saying, "Truly this was the Son of God!" He trusted God no matter what they said about him, did to him, or anything else that happened in life. Is that the way we live? In the hymn Though None Go With Me, India Tribal leaders persecuted the man and his family and ordered him to renounce his faith. He replied, "I have decided to follow Jesus, no turning back." The chief ordered the execution of the man's children, but the man said, "Though no one joins me, still I will follow." Next they killed his wife. With a final opportunity to deny, he refused to deny Christ. Before he was executed he said, "The cross before me, the world behind me." The story goes on to relate that the village chief came to know Christ, as well as many others in the village. What are you willing to give up for Christ? Luke 24:27 says Then beginning with Moses and with all the prophets, Jesus explained to them the things concerning Himself in all the Scriptures. Jesus on the road to Emmaus gave these privileged disciples a short course on finding Christ in the Old Testament. Can you imagine being a part of what they heard? Every part of Scripture points to Jesus, from the beginning to the end. He may have explained to them the parts where it said He had to suffer and die in order that salvation could be accomplished. We don't know, but we know that their hearts were burning within them from the things that He told them. Christ here gives us a pattern which is to be followed by all who teach the word. He took passages and explained them to those He was with. That is Biblical Exposition or what we call Expository Preaching/Teaching. It is taking the scriptures word by word, verse by verse and explaining the meaning and context of each passage within each chapter contained in each book which make up context of the whole Bible. Those who skip over verses, words, or passages are cheating us of all that we should learn. It is not about how much you go through, but how much goes into you and I. If you can't find a church like this go online to our messages or some others who try to do that type of teaching. If you want some good resources, I have some good ones listed below. Then beginning with Moses and with all the prophets, He explained to them the things concerning Himself in all the Scriptures. (Luke 24:27, 32 And they said to one another, "Did not our heart burn within us while He talked with us on the road, and while He opened the Scriptures to us?") God the Father worked for 6 days & then rested. God the Son suffered on the cross for 6 hours & then rested. The Jewish Sabbath is 6 days of work, & then you rest. But the Lord's Day, the 1st day of the week, gives grace: 1st there is faith in the living Christ, & then there will be works. The Lord also transforms His disciples fear into courage. 1st, not only did He come to them, but He comforted them. Lastly, Jesus gives them a new purpose. The purpose of Jesus' incarnation was the salvation of the world (1:29). That also is our purpose. Mark 8:36 "For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? I sat daily with you, teaching in the temple, and you did not seize Me. 56 "But all this was done that the Scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled." Then all the disciples forsook Him and fled. Notice Jesus did not fight or try to resist this group of probably about 1200 people made up of Roman soldiers, Jewish leaders, and citizens. They wanted Jesus killed because He was not the God they thought they saw in the Old Testament. But their God is not the God of the Old Testament who revealed every single prophecy fulfilled in Jesus Christ's first coming. It is the God of the Old Testament who spoke about the seed of a woman in Genesis 3, it's the God of the Old Testament who talked about one who would be crucified, pierced, and wounded for the offences of His people in Isaiah 53. Every single prophecy in the Old Testament fulfilled in Jesus Christ is a point at which you either confirm God as speaking the truth, or lying. You cannot reject Christ and say God speaks the truth. It was God who said this is My Beloved Son. If that's not His Son, God's a liar. If you don't believe that Jesus is the Son of God, then God lied. So don't come with some kind of superior statement about, “Well I believe in God, I believe in the true God, I just reject Christ.” No, if you reject Christ, then you are saying that God is a liar. Who and what do you believe? Matthew 26:55-56 In that hour Jesus said to the multitudes, "Have you come out, as against a robber, with swords and clubs to take Me? Asaph wrote Psalms 77:12-13 which says I will meditate also of all thy work, and talk of thy doings. Your way, O God, is holy; What god is great like our God? The Psalmist Asaph was discouraged and so he began to reflect on how great God is. He concentrated on all the good things God had done for His people in the past. This is how we grow in our faith, we remember the past and know that God will be good to us and help us in the future. Asaph remembers all the great deeds and miracles God did even in spite of their unworthiness to receive what He had done. Let us when we are discouraged and feel defeated remember that even though we are not worthy of one of God's smallest of kindnesses He will always be the God who loves us and cares for us. Amen! Send us a textNote that our Lord's first appearance is not to one of the 11 disciples, but to Mary Magdalene. She will never be one of the apostles. She will never write a Gospel. She will never become a great preacher or leader. Nevertheless, our Lord chose to manifest Himself to her first. Why do you think this was? First, she had a great love for her Master, as He did for her. Second, she seemed to be the one with the greatest measure of grief. “Blessed are those who mourn, because they will be comforted” (Matthew 5:4). There is a third reason: Mary was there first. Jesus revealed Himself first to the one who was there first. Mary came to the tomb early, because of her great love, and her great grief, and Jesus revealed Himself to her, first. Fourthly, I think that it was because she was a woman and He always appears to those who are the most downtrodden. An important lesson this text teaches us is when we come to see things as they really are, we will find that many of our tears were unnecessary. 2 Samuel 12:16-23 is a great hope for those who have lost little children who have not yet come to the age of accountability where they have had a chance to receive or reject Christ as Savior. In this section we see David praying and fasting in the hopes that the child would not die. The child dies and the servants are afraid to tell David because of how he has responded to the sickness. David finally realizes the child must have died and asks the servants. They say yes and then David goes, cleans himself up, and goes to the house of the Lord to worship Him. The servants wonder what is going on and ask David and he tells them that as long as there was hope he fasted and prayed, but now that the child is dead he knows that it is in heaven and is okay. He knows that the child cannot come back to him, but one day because David was an Old Testament believer he will see the child in heaven. He then comforts Bathsheba, the mother. This is such a comfort to know those little ones are in heaven if you have lost a child and that they are better off there than they would have been here. It still hurts, but we that believe know that one day we will see that child again. Matthew 19:14 But Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of heaven.” 2 Samuel 12:16-24a David therefore pleaded with God for the child, and David fasted and went in and lay all night on the ground. 17 So the elders of his house arose and went to him, to raise him up from the ground. But he would not, nor did he eat food with them. 18 Then on the seventh day it came to pass that the child died. And the servants of David were afraid to tell him that the child was dead. For they said, "Indeed, while the child was alive, we spoke to him, and he would not heed our voice. How can we tell him that the child is dead? He may do some harm!" 19 When David saw that his servants were whispering, David perceived that the child was dead. Therefore, David said to his servants, "Is the child dead?" And they said, "He is dead." 20 So David arose from the ground, washed and anointed himself, and changed his clothes; and he went into the house of the LORD and worshiped. Then he went to his own house; and when he requested, they set food before him, and he ate. 21 Then his servants said to him, "What is this that you have done? You fasted and wept for the child while he was alive, but when the child died, you arose and ate food." 22 And he said, "While the child was alive, I fasted and wept; for I said, 'Who can tell whether the LORD will be gracious to me, that the child may live?' 23 "But now he is dead; why should I fast? Can I bring him back again? I shall go to him, but he shall not return to me." 24 Then David comforted Bathsheba his wife, Mark 8:36 "For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Jesus is establishing the New Covenant whereby people no longer go to a priest to ask for forgiveness of sins, but to the Great High Priest Jesus who died for all of our sins and in our place so that we might go to heaven. This cup of water mixed with wine symbolized Jesus' shedding His blood on the cross for our sins. His dying on the cross was sufficient to forgive us and save us because as He was dying it says in Isaiah 53:6 All we like sheep have gone astray; We have turned, every one, to his own way; And the LORD has laid on Him the iniquity of us all. God was pouring His wrath out on Jesus for our sins. Jesus died for OUR SINS. Right before Jesus died He said it is finished. That means our sin debt has been paid in full and when we come to Jesus and ask Him to forgive us of our sins and save us we can become a Child of God. Have you done that? If so thank Him today for who He is and what He has done for you. If not, trust Him TODAY. In Luke 23:13-25 Pilate has examined Jesus and says neither He nor Herod found any fault in Jesus. Yet, who do the people want released, but a murderer named Barabbas. His name means son of the Father, so the murdering son of the father is released in place of JESUS THE TRUE SON OF THE FATHER. This is a picture of what Jesus has done for us. We are the ones who deserve death and hell, yet God sent His Son to take our place on the cross. Isn't this a glorious and wonderful truth that we can be forgiven, or have been forgiven if we have trusted in Christ no matter what we have done in the past. The Father is always willing to forgive, save, and one day give us all that the Son has purchased for us. Jesus was our substitute, He died in our place, the just for the unjust. Thank God today for what He did through Jesus Christ His Son. Luke 23:13-25 Then Pilate, when he had called together the chief priests, the rulers, and the people, 14 said to them, "You have brought this Man to me, as one who misleads the people. And indeed, having examined Him in your presence, I have found no fault in this Man concerning those things of which you accuse Him; 15 "no, neither did Herod, for I sent you back to him; and indeed nothing deserving of death has been done by Him. 16 "I will therefore chastise Him and release Him" 17 (for it was necessary for him to release one to them at the feast). 18 And they all cried out at once, saying, "Away with this Man, and release to us Barabbas" -- 19 who had been thrown into prison for a certain rebellion made in the city, and for murder. 20 Pilate, therefore, wishing to release Jesus, again called out to them. 21 But they shouted, saying, "Crucify Him, crucify Him!" 22 Then he said to them the third time, "Why, what evil has He done? I have found no reason for death in Him. I will therefore chastise Him and let Him go." 23 But they were insistent, demanding with loud voices that He be crucified. And the voices of these men and of the chief priests prevailed. 24 So Pilate gave sentence that it should be as they requested. 25 And he released to them the one they requested, who for rebellion and murder had been thrown into prison; but he delivered Jesus to their will. Send us a text In Matthew 25:36-41 we see Jesus sitting on His throne and judging all the peoples of the earth. This shows it is not like we grew up hearing that we will all be standing in line to see if we make it to heaven based on whether we did more good than bad. Instead we see Jesus immediately separating (His People the sheep) from the goats (unbelievers). The sheep do not get in because of their good works, the Bible makes that clear. They get in because they have trusted in Christ as their Savior and the good works they do are a result, not the reason of their having been saved. The goats are those who never trusted Christ and will end up in hell. They are not there because they didn't do enough good, but because of who they did not believe in Christ. John 3:17 "For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved. 18 "He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. Saved people demonstrate their salvation by the way they live as do unbelievers. Are you a sheep or a goat? Matthew 25:31-36, & 41 "When the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the holy angels with Him, then He will sit on the throne of His glory. 32 "All the nations will be gathered before Him, and He will separate them one from another, as a shepherd divides his sheep from the goats. 33 "And He will set the sheep on His right hand, but the goats on the left. 34 "Then the King will say to those on His right hand, 'Come, you blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world: 35 'for I was hungry and you gave Me food; I was thirsty and you gave Me drink; I was a stranger and you took Me in; 36 'I was naked and you clothed Me; I was sick and you visited Me; I was in prison and you came to Me.', 41 "Then He will also say to those on the left hand, 'Depart from Me, you cursed, into the everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels: Mark 8:36 "For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? God has only one way of doing things, that is the way He prescribes. Oftentimes we try to accomplish God's will using whatever methods we think best or worst of all we do it like the world would do it. When God wants something done He wants it done the way He says and if not then it will not accomplish His will. I remember a guy who told me one day he was glad I was not telling him it was my way or the highway. I told him that a person who designs something makes it to work only one way and it will not work if it is done any other way. It is the same with God, He designed things a certain way, gave us the instruction book (the Bible) to tell us how to do it and the Holy Spirit to guide us and lead us. So, I told him it was never my way, I was only trying to teach what the Bible said, it is God's way or the highway, anything else is not right. Which highway are we on, ours or God's? J. Vernon McGee labeled chapter 6 "Doing a Right Thing in a Wrong Way." With commentary from Marty McKenzie 2 Samuel 6:6-8,13-14 And when they came to Nachon's threshing floor, Uzzah put out his hand to the ark of God and took hold of it, for the oxen stumbled. 7 Then the anger of the LORD was aroused against Uzzah, and God struck him there for his error; and he died there by the ark of God. 8 And David became angry because of the LORD'S outbreak against Uzzah; and he called the name of the place Perez Uzzah to this day. 13 And so it was, when those bearing the ark of the LORD had gone six paces, that he sacrificed oxen and fatted sheep. 14 Then David danced before the LORD with all his might; and David was wearing a linen ephod. Send us a text Matthew 25:14-19 "For the kingdom of heaven is like a man traveling to a far country, who called his own servants and delivered his goods to them. 15 "And to one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one, to each according to his own ability; and immediately he went on a journey. 16 "Then he who had received the five talents went and traded with them, and made another five talents. 17 "And likewise he who had received two gained two more also. 18 "But he who had received one went and dug in the ground, and hid his lord's money. 19 "After a long time the lord of those servants came and settled accounts with them.' God gives each of us time, talent, and money that we are to use for the expansion of His Kingdom. In times past some had considerable responsibility and authority as some do today. Others are not gifted in such a way as to be able to do all the things others do, but are still expected to use what they have to the best of their ability. God expects us to become His children, trust Him, and use all that He gives us in such a way that it will bring glory to Him and bring others to Christ. We have to ask ourselves are we first of all a child of the King? Then we have to ask are we using all that God has given us in such a way that we can hear what was said in Matthew 25:21 "His lord said to him, 'Well done, good and faithful servant; you were faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.' Mark 8:36 "For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? John 14:6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. What an incredible event this must have been. There, in the darkness of that tomb, John “saw the light.”Lessons from John 19 & 20:1-8 1. In 2 Samuel Chapters 3-5 we see how David grows stronger and stronger and eventually becomes the King over all of Israel and rules for 40 years. It was not God's plan for them to have a king, but if they were to have a king it should be a man like David who wanted to please God. He was very flawed and made many mistakes, but God used him anyway as He does with us. The reason David grew stronger and stronger was because God was behind it all. When a man, a ministry, or a church is the plan God is going to use to do His will there is no use in anyone trying to stop it. God's plans can never be thwarted and He will accomplish what He wants. He will use us as long as we are available and seeking His will for our lives. It is amazing the people that God uses to do His will, most of whom are not thought of as the people that God would use. Are we one of those people who God wants to use? Are we seeking Him with our whole heart and desiring His will for our lives and the lives of His people? Let us seek Him today and see what He wants to do in our lives and those around us. 2 Samuel 3:1 Now there was a long war between the house of Saul and the house of David. But David grew stronger and stronger, and the house of Saul grew weaker and weaker. Mark 8:36 "For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Send us a textIt's the Christmas Season again, so lets not forget with all that the world will throw at us in the way of materialism, that Jesus is the reason for the season. In Acts 20:35 Paul said, "I have shown you in every way, by laboring like this, that you must support the weak. And remember the words of the Lord Jesus, that He said, 'It is more blessed to give than to receive.'" This year lets do little less for ourselves and find someone who needs Christ that we can show His love to, that's what this season is really all about. Send us a textOn this first day of the week Mary goes to the tomb & seeing the stone has been moved decides that they have stolen the body of Jesus. She goes & gets Peter & John & they come running. John glances in, Peter looks a little harder & is puzzled because he sees the grave wrappings lying there in their proper place. This day that seems to be the worst ever in that not only has Jesus died, but they have stolen His body too. It is actually the best day ever because this is the day that Jesus rose from the grave, proved He was God, & showed that He had done everything necessary to pay for the sins of the whole world. This is the Good News, the Gospel (1Corinthians 15:3-4). Here we see the secret disciples come forward when all the others have forsaken Jesus. They come at the perfect time so the last of the prophecies can be fulfilled Isaiah 53:9. Jesus gets a burial fit for a King with 100 pounds of very expensive spices, because He is King Jesus & one day will come back to rule & reign. They are running out of time to get Jesus in the grave before the Sabbath starts & so the 3 days & 3 nights can be fulfilled. They use the closest available tomb which happens to be Joseph of Arimathea's. It is done, it is finished, all that is left is for Jesus to come out of the grave & show that He is truly God as if all the miracles He has done is not enough. Title: “Not An Empty Visit” Part 3 Text: 1 Thessalonians 2:13-16 FCF: We often struggle identifying true faith in contrast to non-saving faith. Prop: Because only true faith saves, we must ensure we have received Jesus Christ in true faith. Scripture Intro: [Slide 1] Turn in your bible to 1 Thessalonians chapter 2. In a moment we'll read from the Legacy Standard Bible starting in verse 1. You can follow along in the pew bible or in whatever version you prefer. Today we will conclude the thought that Paul began with in chapter 2. However, keen observers might have noticed that there is a significant amount of overlap between chapter 1 and what we've discussed in chapter 2 so far. Indeed, if you took it upon yourself to set the two chapters side by side and drew lines or highlighted with different colors themes that are saying the same things with different words – you could illustrate this quite clearly. I won't impose that upon you – but if you are up for the challenge, I'm sure it would be profitable to you. Chapter 2 has largely been put to the Thessalonians in order to prove to them that the mission to their city was one that proved to be fruitless. Paul began by stating that they know it was not in vain because it was God's Gospel at work. He continued by saying that they know it was not in vain because they conducted themselves like a family. Today, Paul will conclude his assurance to them, in that they know it was not in vain because it rendered familiar results both positively and negatively. Please stand with me to give honor to and to focus on the Word of God as it is read. Invocation: Holy Father, You have revealed Yourself to us Your people through the Word, our Lord Jesus Christ. He has come to us, as God With Us. He has come to us to save us from sin, death, hell, the devil, and the kingdom of darkness. You have freed us from the tyranny of our own wisdom and enabled us to believe in You the giver of life. God give us eyes to behold the truth of Your word this morning as we see what makes true faith and what awaits us if we are without it. May we take the words of hope and warning today in faith, and may it have the effect upon us You desire. We pray this in Jesus' name – Amen. Transition: [Slide 2] “Faith that saves has one distinguishing quality; saving faith is a faith that produces obedience, it is a faith that brings about a way of life.” Billy Graham “A man at his wit's end is not at his faith's end.” Matthew Henry “The function of faith is to turn God's promises into facts.” J. Oswald Chambers Let these thoughts wash over you as we embark on the truth of the passage this morning. I.) True faith produces belief in God's Word and suffering for Christ, so we must ensure we have received Jesus Christ in true faith. (13-14) a. [Slide 3] 13 - And for this reason we also thank God without ceasing that when you received the word of God which you heard from us, you accepted it not as the word of men, but for what it really is, the word of God, which also is at work in you who believe. i. It takes two sides to make a visit profitable. ii. Paul has, in the first twelve verses, explained how he and his companions did their part to produce a successful and fruitful mission among them. iii. They took God's gospel and gave it to them without unseemly methods or greedy motives. iv. They adopted them as family and loved them accordingly. They cared for them like parents, both supplying what they needed to grow and thrive and teaching them to live a life worthy of God's Kingdom. v. But all of this would have been for nothing if the message was ineffective to produce any kind of spiritual change in them. vi. In fact, without God's empowering the message of His gospel, the Thessalonians would never have heard it as His Word. vii. So Paul gives thanks once again, without ceasing, to God, that the Thessalonians responded to the message the way they did. viii. Going back to chapter 1 verse 4-5, we see that Paul expresses similar thoughts. ix. He is thanking God because he is confident that the Thessalonian believers were elect of God. x. Why? xi. Primarily because of how the gospel came to them. xii. Not in word only (ie words of men only) but in the power of the Holy Spirit and with full conviction. xiii. Paul's thanksgiving here is expressed in more detail. xiv. What does it mean that the gospel came in power, in the Spirit, and with full conviction? xv. It means they responded in true faith. Well, how do they know they have true faith? There are two examples in this text. xvi. First, that they believed the content of the message as though it were from God and second, that they received the power of the message. 1. The content of the message, if received in true faith, must be from God. a. The evangelists were demonstrating holy, righteous, and blameless lifestyles and exhorting, encouraging and insisting that the Thessalonians do the same. b. All of this is couched in the idea that a Kingdom is coming where Christ reigns over all, and demands purest devotion and worship. c. The same Lord who died to save them from their sins, will one day return to judge the living and the dead. He will restore His people and make them to rule with Him in that Kingdom. d. If someone receives this in true faith – they must conclude it is from God. e. Paul reveals in a later letter that the Word of God is hidden from those who are without God's Spirit. God's Spirit must do a work in an unbeliever in order to enable them to understand and believe what the Word of God teaches. f. So, we say that faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God… which is true. But hearing the Word of God to the point of understanding that it is from God and even what that message means – all comes through the power of the Holy Spirit. g. We call this step in the salvation process – regeneration. And although the bible does not explicitly teach that it precedes faith, the scriptures clearly teach that God must do something to enable a person to believe the gospel of Jesus Christ. And He must do this to bring them out of their spiritually dead state. Since this is what regeneration is, it is safe for us to conclude that it must precede faith. h. Paul alludes to this here – in that the Thessalonians did not perceive this as a message from men – but they took what the evangelists said as the very words of God. A conclusion they could not have arrived at without the power of the Holy Spirit – which Paul said in chapter 1, did happen when the gospel came to them. 2. The second way we know they responded in true faith, is by the powerful result of that message being received. a. To those who truly believe, the Word of God produces an effect. b. We should expect the Word of God, preached, taught, read, heard, studied, mediated on, memorized, and illustrated to have a powerful effect upon those who are truly God's people. c. Warnings about sin and falling away, and pursuing righteousness, and loving God and others – should have a distinct influence over the hearts of those who are God's people. d. It is a predictable outcome that if absent calls into question the very legitimacy of our faith. xvii. So how specifically were the Thessalonians powerfully affected by the Word they received from God? b. [Slide 4] 14 - For you, brothers, became imitators of the churches of God in Christ Jesus that are in Judea, for you also suffered the same things at the hands of your own countrymen, even as they did from the Jews, i. Paul calls out their suffering in the same way that the first members of the church suffered. ii. In fact, he uses the word – imitate again. iii. This also goes back to chapter 1 verse 6. iv. They became imitators of Christ and the evangelists by receiving the word with affliction. v. Paul again denotes that Christians are the same no matter where they are. Whether in Judea or Macedonia. They are also the same no matter WHEN they are. Whether at Pentecost in the formation of the church or now. vi. There are general markers that are common among all those who receive true faith. vii. In this example, Paul points to how on the day of Pentecost, believers on Christ suffered great persecution at the hands of fellow countrymen who rejected the gospel. viii. In a similar way, the Thessalonians are being treated quite poorly by their neighbors, family, friends, and others in the city who rejected the gospel message. ix. Being persecuted by unbelievers who are among those closest to you is one way that the legitimacy of your faith is demonstrated. c. [Slide 5] Summary of the Point: Paul's primary point in this chapter so far has been to verify that the mission they had among the Thessalonians only a few months previous, was not an empty and fruitless mission. Countering the claims of their fellow residents of Thessalonica, Paul knows it wasn't fruitless because they spoke God's gospel with confidence and for His approval. He also knows it wasn't fruitless because they felt a familial connection to the Thessalonians. And finally, they know it wasn't a fruitless mission because it produced predictable results in the city. The first result is regarding those who received the gospel message. Because they received this message in true faith, they were convinced it was a message from God and were changed by this message to the extent that they endured suffering for Christ's name. True faith produces belief in God's Word and a willingness, and even a joy to endure suffering for Christ's sake. This would be very encouraging to the Thessalonians, to know that these seasoned believers were confident in their faith. But our application must cautiously approach this. We must begin rather with a need for us to make sure that we have received true faith in Jesus Christ. Then and only then can we be assured and take comfort in the apostle's words. Transition: [Slide 6 (blank)] But what other predictable result comes when the gospel of Jesus Christ is truly received by a group of people? In what else does Paul draw confidence that the Thessalonian mission was not fruitless? II.) Without true faith it is impossible to please God or be at peace with Him or mankind, so we must ensure we have received Jesus Christ in true faith. (15-16) a. [Slide 7] 15 - who both killed the Lord Jesus and the prophets, i. Paul now embarks upon what seems like a rabbit trail. ii. He seeks to expand upon the behavior of the Jewish people who have so opposed the gospel message and have had a history of opposing God's word in general. iii. Here he says that these same Jews who persecuted their own countrymen for believing on Jesus, are the ones who killed the Lord Jesus and their own prophets. iv. Paul again uses familial or collective language. Obviously, the same people who killed Jesus could not be the ones who killed all the prophets down through their history. And most likely they are not the same ones who drove Paul or the apostles out of Judea. v. Instead, Paul refers to a branch of Israel that has been cut off. vi. Paul is not being antisemitic here. He is merely pointing out a group of people who although having the racial privilege of being God's portion, have continued to reject Him as their King and Lord. vii. They are following in an unfortunate history of the Jewish people who strayed from Yahweh both in worship and in conduct to kill their own prophets and those God has sent to speak the truth to them. viii. The crown jewel in this ungodly behavior is, of course, the murder of their own Messiah and God – Jesus of Nazareth. ix. They continued their work of unbelief with Paul and his companions. b. [Slide 8] and drove us out, i. This could be referring to several instances where the Jews drove Paul or Christ's other servants out of certain places. ii. The “us” here could simply refer to Jewish believers, or may even refer to the evangelists themselves. iii. In any case – he points to the majority opposition of the Jewish people to receive their own Messiah or any who preach in His name. c. [Slide 9] and do not please God, i. Since Jesus is God's Messiah, His Servant, the Son of Man that the Ancient of Days will lift up to occupy the same throne as Yahweh… ii. You cannot oppose Christ or Christ's followers without also opposing God. iii. It is impossible for any to please God without first believing on Jesus Christ. iv. All the effort put in keeping the law, even if it were successful, would fail to please God if the person did not put their faith in Christ alone. v. And so, these Jews, in spite of being God's portion and part of Abraham's line, cannot please God and oppose His Son or His Son's Bride, at the same time. vi. But not only are they opposed to God… d. [Slide 10] and are hostile to all men, i. In opposing Christ, the Savior of the world, it is also impossible to love others. ii. To reject Christ is to render yourself unable to truly love other human beings. iii. Why? iv. Because Christ is the hope of the nations. Christ is the King of Kings. Christ is the Bright and Morning Star. Christ is the Lord of Light. v. As Psalm 2 says, we must kiss the Son lest He be angry. vi. All nations must bow to His rule. All nations have hope only in His rule. vii. All nations who do not hope in Him, will cease to exist. viii. And so, to oppose Christ is to oppose the only hope the nations have. ix. The most hateful thing you can do to humanity is to reject His Messiah and harm His Son's Bride. x. Our culture says the most loving thing you can do is to be tolerant and accepting to all faiths. xi. The truth could not be more opposed to this thought. xii. The exclusivity of Christ as Savior and Lord of all, is the way we establish peace with all men. Peace only comes by the Exclusive rule of Christ alone. xiii. Next, Paul specifically calls out in what way the Jews were hostile to all men… e. [Slide 11] 16 - hindering us from speaking to the Gentiles so that they may be saved; i. To hinder the gospel message from going out to the nations is to hate the nations. ii. To stop the message of Christ crucified for sinners is to hate sinners and desire their eternal judgment. iii. The salvation of every man's soul rests in the work of Christ, alone. iv. And to prevent this message from going to all men – is to hate all men. v. No, telling people they are sinners and they need a Savior is not hateful, or unkind. It is the most loving thing we could do. But do you know what is truly hateful and hostile? Doing what you can to prevent others hearing the exclusive gospel of Jesus Christ. vi. Suggesting there are many paths to God through many religions, is the most hateful and hostile thing you could ever tell someone. vii. Since the Jews have opposed God, and man in this way… what is the result? f. [Slide 12] with the result that they always fill up the measure of their sins. i. Their sins have come to completion. ii. There is a call back here to the ban God put on the Canaanite nations before Israel entered into the promised land. iii. God speaks of the sins of the people who lived in the land as filling up a cup. Or coming to completion. iv. Jesus spoke to the Pharisees in a similar way, telling them that they are filling up the cup of their judgment. v. Like when you cook rice on a stove top… vi. The starches in the rice react to the boiling water and produce bubbles. And those bubbles if not kept in check with rise to the top and overflow. vii. Burnt rice water on a glass stove top is one mess you don't want to have to clean up – Not that I know from experience
Send us a text Jesus said in Matthew 24:42-46 "Watch therefore, for you do not know what hour your Lord is coming. Verse 42 applies all that Jesus said beginning in verse 32. His disciples need to remain watchful because the exact time of the His return is unknown even though signs of His coming will point out His approach. Jesus continued instructing His disciples but here He stressed the importance of caution and faithfulness as He prepared them for His return. This is a warning for us to be ready for the Lord Jesus to come back. He could come at any time for His church. Then the Great Tribulation will start and when He comes some will be those who are Christians and are carrying out His will while they wait for His return. These are the ones who will receive a reward when He comes back. He goes on in the next verses to describe the unbeliever (unsaved) person who is doing whatever they want to do and will experience God's wrath when He comes back. Which one are you? Matthew 24:42-46 "Watch therefore, for you do not know what hour your Lord is coming. 43 "But know this, that if the master of the house had known what hour the thief would come, he would have watched and not allowed his house to be broken into. 44 "Therefore you also be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect. 45 "Who then is a faithful and wise servant, whom his master made ruler over his household, to give them food in due season? 46 "Blessed is that servant whom his master, when he comes, will find so doing. Send us a textHere we see the secret disciples come forward when all the others have forsaken Jesus. In Luke 22 we see Jesus telling the disciples all that they would go through leading up to and after His death on the cross. He also says that they will deny Him. Peter says he will never do that, but will die for Jesus. We know that Jesus says Peter will deny Him 3 times and then will be strengthened through the prayers of Jesus to come back and be the leader again of the disciples. Lastly, we see Peter along with the rest of the disciples is sleeping while Jesus is praying to the Father about going to the cross. Jesus tells them to rise and pray lest they enter into temptation. So, we see Peter and the rest of the disciples deserting Jesus and Peter especially fails as Jesus predicted. Why is this? Because they did not do what they should have been doing, Praying! Why do we fail, because we are instructed to pray to God to not let us be tempted and to pass the test when they do come. The Bible over and over says we will be tempted, but God will give us the strength to endure if we will only ask and be prepared for those times. Are we praying and are we prepared? What verses do you have memorized to help you when the devil comes with his lies and deceit? That is what Jesus did when tempted, He used the scriptures. Let us be always ready and not fail and fall when temptation comes our way. Luke 22:31-34,46 And the Lord said, "Simon, Simon! Indeed, Satan has asked for you, that he may sift you as wheat. 32 "But I have prayed for you, that your faith should not fail; and when you have returned to Me, strengthen your brethren." 33 But he said to Him, "Lord, I am ready to go with You, both to prison and to death." 34 Then He said, "I tell you, Peter, the rooster shall not crow this day before you will deny three times that you know Me.", 46 Then He said to them, "Why do you sleep? Rise and pray, lest you enter into temptation." Mark 8:36 "For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Send us a textIn Matthew 24:35 Jesus said "Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away. Jesus was telling His disciples what the signs would be before He would come back and all the things that would happen. Then He tells them of the certainty of all this happening with the words in this verse. With these words He is claiming that all of His predictions have the same authority and legitimacy as God's words because He is God. It says in Hebrew 1:1-2 God, who at different times and in many ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, 2 has in these last days spoken to us by His Son (Jesus), whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds; Do you trust the scriptures and what is said in them? This is an accounting term that means your debt has been paid in full. Jesus paid for all our sins on the cross. There is nothing left for you & I to do but to believe on the Lord Jesus Christ & thou shalt be saved Acts 16:31. Have you done that? It never ceases to amaze me how people can sit in a church all their life if it is preaching the true Gospel and never become a true believer in Christ. Yet, here we see Judas who has been with Jesus for three years, has seen all that Jesus has done, heard all that He said, and was even able to do all the miracles that the rest of the disciples did and he never comes to Christ as a true believer. If he had truly repented instead of having worldly sorrow he would not have killed himself. 2 Corinthians 7:10 For godly sorrow produces repentance leading to salvation, not to be regretted; but the sorrow of the world produces death. It is sad that many who have gone to church all their life and yet their lives do not demonstrate true faith. I hope and pray that you know, that you know, that you know, that if you died today you would go to heaven. If you realize you have not please ask God to forgive you and save you right now. Send us a textJohn 19:24 They said therefore among themselves, "Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be," that the Scripture might be fulfilled which says: "They divided My garments among them, And for My clothing they cast lots." Therefore the soldiers did these things. 25 Now there stood by the cross of Jesus His mother, and His mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. 26 When Jesus therefore saw His mother, and the disciple whom He loved standing by, He said to His mother, "Woman, behold your son!" 27 Then He said to the disciple, "Behold your mother!" And from that hour that disciple took her to his own home. We see more Scripture being fulfilled through Jesus and all that He does and has done to Him while on the cross. These cold callous soldiers are gambling for His garments as He is on the cross suffering the most cruel death ever devised up to that time. All they can see is we are getting some material goods out of this deal. Meanwhile Jesus is paying for the sins of the whole world. There are 4 soldiers who are cruel and they are contrasted by 4 loving women who have been there for Jesus and still are as He dies. The last thing Jesus does as He is dying is to give us the example to take care of the widows. He tells His mother to treat John as her son and for John to take care of His mother as if she was his own. In what ways did later scribes modify and alter the authentic letter from Bishop Ignatius to Polycarp? This week's episode explores some of the additions, focusing on the development of the hierarchy of bishops, the elevated role of the bishop, and the description of Jesus as "our God Jesus Christ." We also examine what it might mean to refer to Christ as "God" in light of the principle of agency that is present in Scripture.
