So he says, do not let sin reign in your mortal body. Notice what he says here, that sin is personified as a king who rules over the lives of his people. And we were his slaves. In verse 17 it says, you were the slaves of sin. But you know what, sin no longer has dominion over us. And we don't have to obey it. So he says, do not let, do not let sin reign.

Verses 2 and 3 depict attitudes, not techniques or methods. In world, and even in evangelical circles, people are more interested in techniques than in attitudes. They buy books written by people who appear successful, and who tell them how to be successful, too. The Bible has little to say about techniques and methods. It has much to say about obedience and about the attitudes which are conducive to godly conduct.Believers' attitudes are important. These attitudes which Paul calls for in verses 2 and 3 are necessary because they are the attitudes of our Lord Himself (see Philippians 2:5-8). If we are to reflect Jesus Christ to the world in which we live, then we must manifest His attitudes. Furthermore, these attitudes are those which promote Christian harmony and unity.Humility is listed first because of Paul's emphasis on unity (pride promotes disunity; humility promotes unity) and to counteract their past pride, so as to facilitate obedience to and dependence on God. Christ was the supreme example of humility (Phil. 2:6–8). Seven elements of unity follow that unite believers in the church. Believers should remember them when tempted to break unity. Again all three members of the Trinity are in view and play a part in this process.Our heart has many pacemaker cells that keep the heart beating in rhythm. When it gets out of sync, it can cause many problems, even making the heart burst apart. It can cause the same thing in the body of Christ when we are not unified, we have many problems and even break apart instead of being one as Jesus said we were to be in John 17:21 "that they all may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one in Us, that the world may believe that You sent Me. Anybody like to watch Shark Week? I always like to watch that. But those sharks, man, when they smell that blood, they attack anything. And they literally roll their eyelids back and they're blind because they can't see. And they just attack anything and everything around them. Sometimes they hurt themselves or they destroy, they bite other animals or whatever's in their way. Bust up cages or get stuck in cages or who knows what they do. They're so big and powerful they're hard to be hurt. But they bite each other and attack anything that gets in their way. And that's what happens to people when they don't know Christ. When they live for themselves, they attack anything and everything around them.

Chapters 1-3 are all about the grace of God and this grace produces gratitude. Another is the hope and assurance we have of the fulfillment of God's future promises. All things through Christ who strengthens me. 2 Corinthians 12, he said when I am weak, I am strong, right? Because why? Christ's power dwells in me. There's so many other places. Philippians 2.12, he talks about that. I was just trying to remember that verse this morning because my pastor quoted it yesterday, but he said, he talks about, you know, that it is work out your own salvation with fear and trembling because it is God who wills to do of his good pleasure, right? And over and over and over again, Ephesians 3.20 says that God is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all we ask or think according to His power that works in us. We've got Holy Spirit power. We've got God's power living inside of us.

Send us Fan Mail I remember the story, what was it, about one of the future queen of England or something? They never did tell her that she was going to be the Queen of England because they were worried if they told her who she was that she would begin acting up and acting out because of who she was. And the one person decided to tell her who she was and she says, now that I know who I am, now I will live that out. And that's the Christian life. That's what we're supposed to do once we know who we are. The Bible says that we're called what? Christians if we know Christ. That means little Christ. It means we live like Christ, right? And so for a person to say they know Christ and to live like the devil, that gives God a bad reputation.

Send us Fan Mail What does that mean? It means that the church today has access to God. that we should come with boldness. And then Hebrews 4.15 and 16 talks about that we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace. That we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in the time of need. So that means that we have the privilege and the right and the access to come to God. Isn't that amazing? I mean, in the Old Testament, guess what? They couldn't come to God, right? They had to go through a priest. They had to go through a temple. They had to go confess their sins. They had to go kill an animal. Only one guy could go into church, into the Holy of Holies once a year in the very presence of God. Nobody else had access to God. But now, every single one of us, if we know Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior, we have direct access to And we can come with boldness directly to the throne room of God. We don't confess our sins to a man. We confess them to God. Because God is our high priest.

He also was to explain this mystery that Jews and Gentiles would be one in the church, with a purpose that God's manifold (of many kinds; numerous and varied) wisdom would be known by the church and the angels in the heavenly places would too. That this was something planned according to his eternal purposes and was accomplished by Jesus' death on the cross. He also tells them that we have boldness and access to God and we should come to Him with confidence because we have faith in Him. Lastly that they would not lose heart at Paul's trouble and the trials that he was going through. I know most everybody here, nobody's ever gotten to that place, but you know what? We were all capable of it. Every single one of us were capable of it. If you've never trusted Christ here today, Ask God to forgive you. Ask God to save you because Jesus died on the cross for our sins. He died in our place. There's nothing we can do to earn it, to deserve it, to pay for it. But as the old song says, Jesus paid it all, right? He didn't leave anything for us to do, but he paid it all. So today, cry out and say, Lord Jesus, I'm a sinner. Save me if you've never trusted him.

Send us Fan MailWhen we trust Christ, the moment Christ comes to live inside of us, we are new and improved. We're really new and improved because Christ has come to live inside of us, right? So we've already talked about that in 2 Corinthians 5, 17, that we're a what? A new creation. Galatians 6.15 says for Christ Jesus neither circumcision or uncircumcision avails anything but a new creation. Ezekiel 36 talks about a new heart. Ezekiel 18 talks about a new spirit. Psalm 40 says he's put a new song in our mouth. Revelation 2.17 says I will give him a white stone and on that stone a new name which no one knows except him who receives it. In Ephesians 4.24 it says that you put on the new man which was created according to God in true righteousness and holiness. So basically we've got a new heart. We're a new creation. We have a new song. We've got a new name. And we're a new man. We're a new person. So that is what God has done for us.

Send us Fan MailThink about Lazarus. Lazarus was dead. Jesus basically propels him out of the grave because I think he was wrapped like a mummy, you know, like they wrapped him. So he couldn't have really, he'd have been doing like this trying to get out of the grave, right? Trying to hop to get out of the grave. He couldn't have done that, but God propels him out of the grave. And when he comes out, what did he say? Loose him and let him go. Now think about Lazarus. He's been in the grave four days. You can imagine the heat out here today. It's going to be out there today. It's even hotter, I think, in Israel. Alright, four days worth of being in a grave. No embalming, no anything. I mean, you ride by a little old squirrel or a raccoon or something on the side of the road and you got your windows open or your vents open and it about knocks you down. You can imagine four days of a person. He says, take these old dirty, stinky grave clothes off of him. And he says, loose him and let him go. And when he says loose him and let him go, it's a picture of us being a slave to sin. We're dead. And when Jesus propels us out of the grave and we trust him, all of a sudden he lets us loose and we take off all those dirty, stinky sins that are a stench in the nostrils of a holy God. is what it's a picture of. Send us Fan MailEph 1:7 In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace The first great act of redemption in the Old Testament is the exodus, the deliverance of the nation Israel from her bondage in Egypt. Redemption is an act of God by which He Himself pays as a ransom the price for sin which has outraged His holiness. It means to pay a price to free somebody from bondage. Every person in the world is a slave in their sinful state. No man is free. And to whom are they slaves? Who is the captor? John 8:34 says, "Men are slaves to sin." Romans 6:17 says, "Men are servants to sin." Romans 7:14; "Sold under sin." Romans 8:21; "In bondage to corruption." What is the captor of men? Sin. Sin demands a price to be paid to release its victim. The price or the wage of sin is death. So in order to purchase sinners from the grasp of sin there must be death. Hebrews 9:22 The soul that sinneth, the Old Testament says, it shall die. All right, the wages or the price of sin is death. Jesus paid the price to set us free. They wanted to go back to Egypt instead of going to the promised land. Because the promised land, remember, it's work to trust Christ. In this section we see that the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ. What are these blessings? The first 3 chapters describe all of them. We will talk about three of those blessings today. First we have been chosen by God so that He could make us holy and without blame, next we have been adopted as sons and have become part of the family of God, and lastly we have been accepted in Jesus Christ the Beloved because of what He did on the cross. To be accepted means we now are approved of by God. Remember when Adam and Eve died in the garden? When they ate the fruit, what happened? They died spiritually, right? They didn't die physically. Later on, they died spiritually. Send a text George Sweeting wrote, It is a fearful thing that people can be consumed by their own lust. Only God's grace keeps us from the wolf's fate. Only God's grace keeps us from doing to ourselves what that wolf does to himself. I think about the sharks, you know, they go crazy when they get in the water, right? And they attack them. Anybody like to watch Shark Week? I always like to watch that. But those sharks, man, when they smell that blood, they attack anything. And they literally roll their eyelids back and they're blind because they can't see. And they just attack anything and everything around them. Sometimes they hurt themselves or they destroy, they bite other animals or whatever's in their way. Bust up cages or get stuck in cages or who knows what they do. They're so big and powerful they're hard to be hurt. But they bite each other and attack anything that gets in their way. And that's what happens to people when they don't know Christ. When they live for themselves, they attack anything and everything around them.
Send a text You know, the problem is we just don't know the power we have within us. That's the thing. Paul said I can do what? All things through Christ who strengthens me. 2 Corinthians 12, he said when I am weak, I am strong, right? Because why? Christ's power dwells in me. There's so many other places. Philippians 2.12, he talks about that. I was just trying to remember that verse this morning because my pastor quoted it yesterday, but he said, he talks about, you know, that it is work out your own salvation with fear and trembling because it is God who wills to do of his good pleasure, right? And over and over and over again, Ephesians 3.20 says that God is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all we ask or think according to His power that works in us. We've got Holy Spirit power. We've got God's power living inside of us.
Send a text I remember the story, what was it, about one of the future queen of England or something? They never did tell her that she was going to be the Queen of England because they were worried if they told her who she was that she would begin acting up and acting out because of who she was. And the one person decided to tell her who she was and she says, now that I know who I am, now I will live that out. And that's the Christian life. That's what we're supposed to do once we know who we are. The Bible says that we're called what? Christians if we know Christ. That means little Christ. It means we live like Christ, right? And so for a person to say they know Christ and to live like the devil, that gives God a bad reputation.
Send a text Knowing this, that our old man was crucified with him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin. So the old man, the old person was crucified. The way it really talks about here, he says the old man was crucified that the body of sin might be done away with. And in verse 6 it really says the old self was crucified so that we might not be controlled by sin. And this word crucified or died is the word that doesn't mean annihilated. It just means it's rendered inactive. It's made of no effect. In other words, we don't have to obey it.
Send a text What is the blaspheming of the Holy Spirit?” It is this, it is that Christ did everything that He did through the Spirit. The Spirit was working in Christ. He says if you've seen me and you've seen all the works that the Holy Spirit has done through Me, and you have concluded that they're of Satan, you have blasphemed the Holy Spirit. In other words, blasphemy of the Holy Spirit is attributing the works and words of Jesus to Satan. And He says for that you cannot be forgiven. This is the only unforgiveable sin. When Jesus said in John 14:6 That He is the way, the truth, and the life and no one comes to the Father but by me and you reject His words. It is the sin of rejecting Christ as Savior. God can forgive all sin, all but that. Mark 3:28-30 "Assuredly, I say to you, all sins will be forgiven the sons of men, and whatever blasphemies they may utter; 29 "but he who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit never has forgiveness, but is subject to eternal condemnation" -- 30 because they said, "He has an unclean spirit."Mark 8:36 "For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Send a textToday we look a little closer at the three do you love Me statements and what they mean to us in practical terms of what we need to do and how we need to live in light of these questions. Peter is like us in that he is not willing to totally commit to something unless we are sure WE can pull it off. So, Jesus gives a prophecy of how Peter will die. He tells Peter that he will live to be an old man and then they will put him on a cross. That he will glorify God through his death. That is just like God to let us know, yes you have failed, yes you are hesitant to fully commit now because of your failure, but I am going to use you anyway. Also, I want to let you know that when it comes time to stand up for me, you will not fail, you will not make the same mistake again and you will ultimately do the will of God as you are supposed to when it really counts. 2Co 9:15 Thanks be to God for His indescribable gift! Send a text In Mark 3:29 Jesus said "but he who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit never has forgiveness, but is subject to eternal condemnation" This saying of Jesus has caused many people great anxiety throughout the history of the church. Many have wondered if they have committed the unpardonable sin. Concern that one may have committed it is a good indication that one probably has not. The way to avoid committing the unpardonable sin is to believe the testimony that the Holy Spirit has given about Jesus in Scripture, namely, that He is the Christ (i.e., the divine Messiah, cf. 1 John 5:1). In other words, the only unforgiveable sin is the sin of rejecting Christ as Savior. If you die and have not trusted Christ as your Savior, then you will end up in hell. That is the unforgiveable sin. If you haven't trust Him today. Send a textIn this very familiar section of Scripture we see Jesus telling the disciples after they have fished all night to cast the net again and they catch so many fish they almost sink the boat. They need to recognize without Him they can do nothing, as do we. Then He feeds the disciples with fish He has created for their breakfast in the same fashion He multiplied the fish and the loaves at the feeding of the 5000 men and their families. He then proceeds to restore Peter by asking him three times do you love me. That is the question of all time, do we love Jesus more than others, more than things, more than anything. As the old song says I would rather have Jesus than silver or gold, than riches untold, I rather have Jesus than anything this world affords. Is this true of you? Send a textPsalm 34:8 says O taste and see that the LORD is good; How blessed is the man who takes refuge in Him! David was calling on the people to experience as he had the goodness of the Lord for themselves by relying on Him during their times of difficulties. In Psalms 34 verses 4 through 8 David witnesses to us what God does for His children. He saves us, He keeps us, and He satisfies us. We cannot do these things for ourselves but God can. This is a promise not of comfortable circumstances, but it is a promise of God's care for us who belong to Him. Have you tasted and seen that the Lord is good? Trust Him today if you haven't for all that goes on in life and trust Him for salvation if you are not His child. He is a good God. Send us a text Mark begins by telling us that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and that He was a messenger of the Gospel, but also fully God. He then tells us about the prophesied John the Baptist who is only listed as a messenger with a voice. John was sent to prepare the way for Jesus and introduce Him to the world. One man said John was just a newspaper boy saying read all about it, Jesus is coming. John was just the messenger, not the message. It is all about Jesus. He tells them to make His paths straight. When a king was coming they would straighten all the roads, remove all the valleys, and make a clear path for them to enter the area. This means we are to clean up our life, straighten out all the crooked things we are doing and make it easy for King Jesus to lead us and guide us in the way we should go. Of course this can only be done when Jesus is on the throne of our life. Who is on your throne? Mark 1:1-3 The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. 2 As it is written in the Prophets: "Behold, I send My messenger before Your face, Who will prepare Your way before You." 3 "The voice of one crying in the wilderness: 'Prepare the way of the LORD; Make His paths straight.'" Send us a textThe disciples keep on telling Thomas that they have seen Jesus, but Thomas refuses to believe unless he sees for himself. Remember he is only asking for what the others have already experienced. Now Jesus makes a personal appearance 8 days later for Thomas. Jesus offers for Thomas to put his finger in His side & hands. Then Thomas makes that greatest of all confessions of faith when He says My Lord my God. Jesus tells Thomas because He saw believed, but the blessing comes for those have faith. He finishes up the chapter by giving us the purpose statement of the whole book of John. He wrote about the seven signs that we might trust in Christ and have eternal life forever because of Jesus. Send us a textMatthew 28:18-20 says And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Matthew has wanted us to understand the authority of Jesus throughout his whole Gospel. Now that Jesus has been resurrected and done all that He was tasked with to forgive us and save us that authority is in full force. The disciples had a limited task of sharing the Gospel with Israel before this time and now the time for them and all believers to go and make disciples has been started. This means we are to share the Good News, the Gospel that is in 1 Corinthians 15:3-4, that Jesus' death, burial, and resurrection is what paid for our sins. Is this the most important goal of our life? It should be because that is why Jesus when He saved us left us here, so we can tell others who He is and what He has done in our lives. Send us a textJesus says that when His disciples go with the message of salvation, some people will believe & others will not. Reaction to their ministry would be the same as reaction to His had been. He viewed their forgiving & retaining the sins of their hearers as the actions of God's agents. If anyone believed the Gospel, they could tell the believers that God had forgiven their sins. If they disbelieved, they could tell them that God had not forgiven but retained their sins. Jesus had done this & now His disciples would continue to do it. Their ministry would be a continuation of His ministry. Send us a textMatthew 27:50 says And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice, and yielded up His spirit. Here we see Jesus crying out in agony in taking the sin debt of all humanity on Himself. Then as He has done all that was needed in order for our sins to be forgiven He gives up His life. No one took it from Him, He gave it up for our sins. At this point the veil of the temple tears from top to bottom to show the way to heaven through Christ was open to all. Many Old Testament saints came out of the graves as a picture of the future resurrection of all believers. Then the most incredible thing happened, the soldiers and others witnessing this came to the conclusion and publicly testified for the first time the point that Matthew has been trying to get across in all of his gospel and what God wants us to understand, that Jesus truly was the Son of God. Have we truly believed and trusted in that for our forgiveness and salvation?
