Grumbling is a recurring theme in the Old Testament. God's people were rarely satisfied. This stems from unbelief, which is connected to a hardened heart. As a result, they were not allowed to enter God's rest. We too must be on guard, but how does that work? We will see how God has designed his Church for his glory and our good.1) Stay near to Jesus2) Stay near to his ChurchText: Hebrews 3

Wednesday March 18, 2026V Week of LentToday's readings reveal the contrast between resistance and surrender, law and life, and control and childlike trust. In Exodus 7:8–24, God displays His power through signs and wonders before Pharaoh, yet his heart remains hard. Even when confronted with undeniable truth, Pharaoh refuses to yield. It's a sobering reminder that repeated resistance can dull our responsiveness to God's voice. In 2 Corinthians 2:14–3:6, Paul celebrates the triumph of Christ, describing believers as the aroma of His victory. Our lives carry the fragrance of the gospel—either life to those who receive it or a reminder of truth to those who resist it. This new covenant is not written on stone, but on hearts, brought to life by the Spirit who gives freedom. And in Mark 10:1–16, Jesus teaches about covenant faithfulness and then welcomes children, affirming that the kingdom of God belongs to those who receive it like a child. While adults debate and defend, children simply come—trusting, open, and dependent. This episode invites us to soften our hearts, live as carriers of Christ's life-giving presence, and approach God not with resistance—but with humble, childlike faith.
The hardened heart of Pharaoh is a lesson for us. Tomorrow is the graveyard where obedience gets buried. Today is the day to turn your life to the Lord and accept Him as the one, true God.
Thursday January 15, 2026I Week After Epiphany Today's readings confront us with the seriousness of sin—and the surprising kindness of God. In Genesis 6:1–8, the growing corruption of humanity grieves the heart of God, yet grace shines through as Noah finds favor in the Lord. Hebrews 3:12–19 issues a sober warning against hardened hearts, reminding us that unbelief and disobedience quietly distance us from the living God. Then, in John 2:1–12, Jesus performs His first sign at a wedding in Cana, turning water into wine and revealing His glory—not in judgment, but in joy and abundance.Together, these passages invite us to reflect on the posture of our hearts. Will we resist God and drift toward hardness, or will we respond to His grace and allow Jesus to transform the ordinary places of our lives into spaces of new life and hope?
Fr. Mike reflects on Stephen's heroic martyrdom and points out how those around him refused to hear him and hardened their hearts, something we too can do with the Word of God. In the book of Romans, Fr. Mike also highlights the importance of offering our bodies as a living sacrifice, responding to the call to love and to not be conformed to this world, and remembering that Christians have been grafted onto the tree of Israel. Today we read Acts 7, Romans 11-12, and Proverbs 27:13-14. For the complete reading plan, visit ascensionpress.com/bibleinayear. This Sunday we'll look at two more stories from Jesus' ministry, the feeding of the 5,000 and Jesus walking on water. They seem to be disconnected stories, but Mark links them together by highlighting the continued need for faith. The issue is that it's easy to believe in Jesus while everything is going well, but difficult when it's not. Jesus exposes our hardened hearts and calls us to a deep faith that secures us even when we're terrified out of our minds. Join us on Sunday at 10:30am!

Have you ever seen stubbornness lead to destruction? In Revelation 9:13-21, we encounter a vivid portrayal of humanity's unrepentant hearts, even in the face of God's terrifying judgment. This sobering passage reveals three profound truths: the precision of God's judgment, the devastating power of sin, and the tragedy of hardened hearts. Join us as we explore how this passage calls us to humility, repentance, and faith in the Lamb who was slain. Be encouraged to reflect on your own heart and the mercy God offers to those who turn to Him.

n this homily, Fr. Michael explores Jesus' teaching on marriage, reflecting on why Christ renews the covenant of marriage and calls us to a deeper fidelity. He explains that while Moses permitted divorce because of the hardness of people's hearts, Jesus invites us to embrace a new heart—one transformed by grace and committed to the permanence of marital love. With this renewed heart in Christ, we are called to live the original vision of marriage: a lifelong, faithful, and loving covenant that reflects God's love for His people.
