Romans 8:18-30: Creation Groans, the Spirit Intercedes

Thy Strong Word from KFUO Radio

You have had moments where you needed to pray and could not find the words. Paul knows. He says the whole creation is groaning like a woman in labor, and we groan with it, waiting for what God has promised. The Spirit intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words, praying on our behalf when we cannot do it ourselves. And God works all things together for the good of those He has called. The comfort here is not that suffering makes sense, but that God is at work inside it.  The Rev. Peter Burfeind, pastor of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Union City, MI and Agnus Dei Lutheran Church in Marshall, MI, joins the Rev. Dr. Phil Booe to study Romans 8:18–30.  To learn more about Our Savior and Agnus Dei Lutheran Churches, visit facebook.com/oursaviorunioncity and agnusdeimarshall.com. Why does doing the right thing sometimes feel impossible? Why do feelings of guilt follow us even when we've been forgiven? These aren't new questions. St. Paul wrote his letter to the Romans for a church he had never visited, and yet he addressed the struggles every Christian knows firsthand: the weight of the law, the persistence of sin, the sufficiency of what God has done in Christ. Romans covers enormous ground. Paul moves from the universal problem of sin through justification by faith, the role of baptism, the war between flesh and spirit, God's faithfulness to Israel, and the shape of life together in the body of Christ. There's a reason the Reformation was born in this letter. Join us on Thy Strong Word as we open up Romans, weekdays at 11am or on-demand anytime, at KFUO.org.  Thy Strong Word, hosted by Rev. Dr. Phil Booe, pastor of St. John Lutheran Church of Luverne, MN, reveals the light of our salvation in Christ through study of God's Word, breaking our darkness with His redeeming light. Each weekday, two pastors fix our eyes on Jesus by considering Holy Scripture, verse by verse, in order to be strengthened in the Word and be equipped to faithfully serve in our daily vocations. Submit comments or questions to: thystrongword@kfuo.org.

Get ready for another unforgettable adventure through fatherhood, fandom, and hilarious life lessons as Charles and Joe roll the dice and let fate decide the path of this episode of Wise_N_Nerdy. The episode opens with the always entertaining Question of the Week: “Which video game world would be the most difficult to survive in for a month?” What begins as a fun hypothetical quickly turns into a survival challenge worthy of gaming legends. The hosts and community throw around brutal worlds and impossible odds, discussing nightmare scenarios from Duke Nukem and the monster-filled chaos of Resident Evil. Between alien invasions, zombie outbreaks, and impossible odds, Charles and Joe debate whether surviving would come down to skill, luck, or simply accepting defeat immediately. As tradition demands, the dice determine the next destination—and naturally they summon a barrage of Bad Dad Jokes, courtesy of Joe's middle child, Bob. Groans echo across the kingdom as joke after joke lands with the perfect blend of cringe, chaos, and dad-approved comedy. The dice roll again and land on the always insightful “Parliament of Papas” segment. This time, the hosts react to a workplace dilemma involving someone who took PTO specifically to enjoy a newly released video game, only to have an entitled coworker pressure them into giving up their day off so she could visit family instead. Charles and Joe unpack expectations around personal time, respecting boundaries, and why rest, hobbies, and recreation are not somehow less valuable simply because they look different from someone else's priorities. Next, fate leads into the reflective “Daddy, Tell Me A Story” segment, where Charles and Joe discuss those unforgettable moments in life when they realized adults don't actually have everything figured out. Through personal stories and honest reflection, they explore how growing up often means discovering that the people you looked up to were simply doing their best. The conversation becomes an unexpectedly meaningful reminder that uncertainty doesn't make someone incapable—it makes them human. The dice continue their journey into the practical “How Do I…?” segment, where the hosts tackle a challenge that becomes surprisingly difficult as life gets busier: How do you make friends as an adult? Charles and Joe explore ways to build meaningful relationships through shared interests, intentional effort, showing up consistently, and creating space for connection. Whether through hobbies, gaming groups, parenting circles, conventions, or simply reaching out first, the discussion offers encouraging advice for anyone trying to expand their community and deepen friendships. Finally, the episode closes with “What Are You Nerding Out About?” Charles shares his excitement over the Netflix adaptation of Devil May Cry, talking about how thoroughly he's enjoying the action, style, and energy of the series. Meanwhile, Joe reflects on quality family time spent introducing his youngest son to Super Mario World—proving once again that some gaming experiences never lose their magic. Joe also talks about completing his first randomizer experience with The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, discovering a fresh new appreciation for a classic adventure through unexpected twists and discoveries. This episode delivers everything Wise_N_Nerdy fans love: gaming discussions, thoughtful conversations, nostalgic stories, practical advice, and enough dad jokes to cause emotional damage. Whether you're here for the fandom, the fatherhood, or the friendship, there's a seat waiting for you. So gather your party, roll the dice, and don't forget to Find your FAMdom. In this lively episode of Wise_N_Nerdy, Charles and Joe once again roll the dice—literally—to guide the conversation through fatherhood, fandom, and plenty of laughs along the way. The episode kicks off with the Question of the Week: “What's a weird talent that you have?” Joe admits to a surprisingly impressive (and mildly dangerous) skill—tossing food into the air and catching it in his mouth—while Charles confesses he is unnervingly good at towel snapping, a talent that may or may not have struck fear into siblings everywhere. With the dice deciding their fate, the show jumps first into Parliament of Papas, where Charles and Joe tackle a modern relationship dilemma: is it ever okay to skip ahead in a show you're watching with someone else? The discussion balances humor, honesty, and hard-earned dad wisdom, as they explore trust, spoilers, and unspoken TV-watching rules. Next up is the “How Do I…?” segment, where the hosts get real about helping kids with homework—especially when it's been years (or decades) since they last saw the material. From relearning concepts on the fly to modeling perseverance and curiosity, Charles and Joe share practical strategies that resonate with parents everywhere. Then the episode hits a high (or low, depending on your tolerance) point with Bad Dad Jokes, featuring a special guest appearance by Joe's son, Bob. Bob delivers a rapid-fire barrage of jokes so groan-worthy that the segment earns a new name: “Groans with Charles.” It's wholesome, hilarious, and peak Wise_N_Nerdy energy. The dice roll again, ushering in “What Are You Nerding Out About?” Joe dives into the anime Easygoing Territory Defense by the Optimistic Lord, praising it as a low-stakes power fantasy isekai that's perfect comfort viewing. Charles follows up by nerding out about something closer to home—recent snow days—and the unexpected joy and chaos they bring to family life. The episode wraps with “Daddy, Tell Me A Story,” as Charles and Joe reflect on the fandoms that shaped them growing up. They focus especially on Star Wars and Star Trek, discussing how these universes sparked imagination, values, and lifelong connections that they now share with their own kids. It's a heartfelt reminder of why fandom matters—and how it bridges generations. In Romans 8:28-39, we encounter one of Scripture's most powerful reassurances about God's unwavering commitment to those who belong to Him. This passage addresses a question that haunts many believers: if we're filled with the Holy Spirit and living faithfully, why do we still suffer? The answer isn't found in eliminating pain, but in understanding that suffering confronts us with the brokenness of this world, conforms us to Christ's image, and confirms our belonging to Him. What makes this passage particularly rich is how Paul grounds our present struggles in eternal realities—foreknowledge, predestination, calling, justification, and glorification. These aren't abstract theological concepts but a soft pillow for weary hearts. Whether we interpret foreknowledge as God's eternal decree or His relationship with believers throughout history, the central truth remains: nothing can separate us from God's love. Not affliction, distress, persecution, famine, nakedness, danger, or sword. We live in the 'until'—between Christ's ascension and His return—and in this space, our suffering unfolds under the watchful reign of a risen Savior who intercedes for us. This isn't a promise of a painless life, but of a finished salvation and a love that outlives death itself. When pain enters the room, our assurance doesn't have to leave it.

This episode of Wise_N_Nerdy brings together fatherhood, fandom, and mental health as Charles and Joe are joined by special guest Todd Sarner, a licensed psychotherapist, parenting coach, and the founder of Transformative Parenting. Blending nerdy fun with meaningful conversation, this episode is a perfect example of how pop culture and real-life parenting lessons can coexist. The show kicks off with the Question of the Week: “If you could have any two IPs do a crossover, which two would you choose?” The conversation quickly spirals into delightful chaos as the hosts imagine dream mashups like Star Trek meeting The Lord of the Rings, Quantum Leap crossing paths with Doctor Who, and even Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles teaming up with Demon Slayer. It's imaginative, passionate, and exactly the kind of nerdy debate fans love. As tradition demands, the roll of the dice sends the crew straight into a round of truly unfunny bad dad jokes—the kind that hurt to hear and somehow hurt even more to tell. Groans are plentiful, dignity is lost, and the tone is perfectly set for what comes next. In the “Daddy, Tell Me A Story” segment, Todd shares his personal and professional journey into therapy, opening up about what led him to create Transformative Parenting and why helping families navigate emotional growth has become his life's work. It's a heartfelt look at how experience, empathy, and intention shape better parents and healthier kids. That naturally leads into the “How Do I…?” segment, where Charles, Joe, and Todd dig into the benefits of therapy—especially for children. They discuss breaking stigmas, building emotional tools early, and how therapy can be a proactive support rather than a last resort. It's an encouraging reminder for parents that seeking help is a strength, not a failure, and a powerful way to Find your FAMdom through support, connection, and understanding. The dice then decree it's time for the Parliament of Papas, featuring a legendary parenting tale of epic revenge. The hosts unpack a story where a father proves a point by allowing his kids to “loot” his brother's house—turning a teachable moment into a hilarious and unforgettable lesson about consequences. To close things out, the episode dives into “What Are You Nerding Out About?” Joe offers a balanced and thoughtful take on the newly released Hytale, highlighting both its strengths and noticeable flaws while expressing excitement for its future potential. Charles passionately rants and raves about Tron: Ares, while Todd nerds out over the growing power of AI as a transformative tool—and shares some personal joy by talking about his upcoming nuptials. This Sunday we explored Romans 8:18-27, addressing the tension between present suffering and future glory for believers. Pastor Adam emphasizes that while Christians are new creations in-dwelt by the Holy Spirit, they still experience suffering in a fallen world. However, this suffering serves divine purposes: it confronts us with our need for Jesus, conforms us into Christ's image, and confirms we are His followers. This teaches that suffering should not be interpreted as a lack of God's love, but rather understood through the lens of Christ's sacrificial love demonstrated at the cross. The Holy Spirit intercedes for believers during their deepest suffering, and creation itself groans in anticipation of redemption. Hope is presented not as wishful thinking but as an anchored certainty in Christ's return and the promise of new heavens and a new earth where righteousness dwells. Believers are called to wait eagerly, standing on tiptoes in anticipation of Christ's return, knowing that present afflictions are producing an eternal weight of glory.

Romans 8 invites us into a profound meditation on suffering, creation, and the hope of glory that awaits us. We discover that suffering isn't something God overlooks—it's actually a tool He uses to shape us into mature believers who reflect His image. Like a silversmith heating silver until he can see his reflection in it, God allows trials to remove the impurities in our lives. The passage reveals something remarkable: all of creation is groaning alongside us, waiting for redemption. From the moment sin entered the world in Genesis 3, the ground was cursed with thorns and thistles, and decay became part of our reality. But creation hasn't given up hope. The seas, rivers, trees, and mountains all long for Christ's return when everything will be made new. Even the darkness at Christ's crucifixion and the earthquake that split rocks testified to creation's recognition of its Creator. We're challenged to examine whether we share creation's eager longing for Christ's return, or whether we've become so comfortable with our earthly blessings that we've lost our heavenly focus. The promise is breathtaking: God will replace every thorn with a cypress, every briar with a myrtle. He's making all things new, and our suffering is producing an eternal weight of glory beyond comparison.**Sermon Notes:****Introduction:**- Passage: Romans 8:17-25.- Central theme: The role of suffering in Christian maturity and the hope of future glory.**Key Themes:**1. **Suffering and Growth:**  - Suffering is universal and disliked but essential for Christian growth.  - Suffering isn't elective; it's a part of spiritual maturation.  - Personal anecdote: Grandson's struggle during a hike symbolizes how suffering can lead to growth.2. **Comfort and Complacency:**  - Modern comfort can lead to spiritual complacency.  - Reference to Revelation 3:14 (Laodicean church): They are lukewarm due to self-sufficiency and lack of spiritual hunger.  - Importance of recognizing need for God amid comfort.3. **Creation's Groaning:**  - Creation itself suffers due to sin and longs for redemption.  - Examples of nature's subjugation: thorns, decay, and futility.  - Biblical references: Genesis 3 (curse of the ground), and Isaiah's prophecy of renewal.4. **God's Sovereignty Over Nature:**  - God controls and commands creation.  - Examples: Darkness at Jesus' crucifixion, God stopping time for Joshua.  - Nature worships God through its existence and awaits His return.5. **Hope of Redemption:**  - Believers are like creation, groaning for relief and renewal.  - Hope is anchored in God's promise of a new heaven and earth (Revelation 21).6. **Practical Implications:**  - Self-reflection on spiritual readiness and eagerness for Christ's return.  - Challenge to embrace suffering as a path to spiritual growth.**Practical Applications:**1. **Embrace Suffering:**  - View personal hardships as opportunities for spiritual growth.  - Reflect on how challenges can refine character and increase reliance on God.2. **Combat Complacency:**  - Evaluate areas of life where comfort may have led to spiritual stagnation.  - Foster a genuine hunger for God through scripture and prayer.3. **Focus on Eternal Hope:**  - Regularly meditate on the promises of a renewed creation and eternal life.  - Shift perspective from earthly concerns to heavenly expectations.**Discussion Questions:**1. How has a specific period of suffering or hardship contributed to your spiritual growth?2. In what areas might comfort be hindering your spiritual zeal or dependence on God?3. How do you maintain hope and patience while waiting for the fulfillment of God's promises?4. In what ways can you remind yourself and others that this world is not our ultimate home?5. How do you actively prepare your heart and mind for Christ's return amidst the distractions of everyday life?By focusing on these themes and applications, we strive to not only understand the biblical text but also integrate its teachings into our daily lives, reinforcing our hope in Christ's imminent return and the inherent growth found through life's challenges.

Today I want to share one of my favorite tools — something that's helped me not only in wellness and business, but in how I live my legacy. It's called the Major System (sometimes paired with the PAO method). In simple terms: you convert numbers into consonant-sounds, then you turn those into vivid images. These images become anchors in your mind. For example:0 = soft c / s / z → I use “Chaz Bono…”1 = d/t → “Danny Thomas…”… and so on.So when you see a number like 66, you don't just see “sixty-six”. You see “Jousting championships in shining armor” (J/SH sounds). Instantly memorable. Why does this matter for your health & business? Because every goal you track, every habit you build, every legacy you plan — is a number or sequence of numbers: age, metrics, targets, dates. If you memorise them powerfully, you engage them powerfully.Want to recall your daily supplement list? Use a number → Want to remember a business target? Want to anchor your memory of a life-lesson or bodily routine? Holistic nutrition & kelp-science Memory systems & brain health Business mindset and meaningful legacy We're building more than wellness — we're building memory-rich,purpose-full lives.Want to dive in? In today's episode I'll walk you through:My full 0-9 map (you'll hear how I anchor each number)How to turn a two-digit number into an image you'll never forget A live demo: I'll pick a random number and we'll create the image together And we'll tie it back to your health/business/legacy goals Ready to remember your future? This week on Beyond the Sermon, Pastor Magrey and Mat dig into Romans 8 — one of Paul's most famous and vivid passages. Paul describes creation “groaning like childbirth,” a picture that captures both the pain of the present and the hope of what's to come. Together, they explore how this chapter acts as a hinge in Romans: shifting from heavy theology to a vision of new life, resilience, and community. From midwives of hope to modern struggles, they reflect on what it means to live faithfully when the world never seems perfect, and how values like integrity, courage, and humility can ground us no matter the season.Find out more at HydeParkUMC.org/NextSteps

Today on the Daily Nugget, Mike dives into Romans 8:22–27 and the incredible truth that we are never alone in our pain. Scripture tells us that all creation is groaning, longing for redemption—and we groan too. But we're not groaning in vain. The Holy Spirit Himself enters into our suffering, joining us in our weakness and interceding on our behalf. When words fail and all we can offer is a groan, the Spirit carries our pain to the Father, praying with “groanings too deep for words.” This isn't distant comfort—it's deeply personal. God is not only aware of our suffering; He's with us in it, actively ministering to us, reminding us that our pain matters to Him.
