Hobbiest mixologist, viral video personality, and cocktail book author of Suck It Up: Extraordinary Cocktails for Everyday People, Dan Magro has a real-talk and hilarious approach to mixing drinks and taking names. We talked about the proliferation of multi-hyphenates in LA, his deep love of brunch as a lifestyle, and his ultimate, if unexpected, drinking buddy. This week's cocktail recipe is a brunch favorite from Dan's book, Suck it Up. Lavender Mimosa - served in a champagne flute Brut Champagne or Sparkling Wine Lavender Honey Infusion* a lemon, quartered Garnish: fresh lavender Rub the lemon slice around the rim of the flute, squeeze the juice into the glass, and the drop the wedge in. Fill the glass with 3/4 of bubbly, top off the remainder of the glass with the lavender honey syrup. Garnish with lavender. *Lavender Honey Infusion Bring 3 cups of water to a boil. WE'RE BACK. In this episode, we talk design, specifically graphics and book design. There is a lot here, but if you are interested in learning about our approaches, this topic is for you. The big discussion covers Style over Substance. Yes, the writing of a game is essential, but so too is the presentation. We end with the start of the next podcast. We hate planning these, yet we hit on a topic that we did not have the time to cover. Why? At 1:30.00 we got tired of talking. Here are some links to the books we mentioned They are also great places to start if you want to learn more about typography and sound design. WoS: Aspersion – a damaging or derogatory remark or criticism; slander QoS: ”Only the weak are cruel. Gentleness can only be expected from the strong.” Off-Topic: billy in genny Topic: White-Washing It is amazing how effective white-washing has been throughout time. Through various conversations I’ve had this week I’ve referenced Black Wall Street a few times and my colleagues have been literally hit with confusion. White washing aka story telling have created a skewed perception of life that people have internalized to be truth. Ignorance is purposeful not bliss, the government doesn’t want to implicate themselves in anything criminal because that would tarnish their image. Historic events like the bombing of Black Wall Street, sundown towns, and many other events have been white washed to cater to the great United States of America’s image. The hobby business owner One of KingDev’s biggest pet peeves are business owners that treat their businesses as hobbies. Hobbies are things that we do to pass time. Businesses are things we create with the intentions of fixing a problem and profiting off of it in some way. The problem is when they fuse the two creating a business hobbyist. The goal is to be the owner or founder of a successful business, not a person who has a business. I founded two businesses and I treat them as such. I have clientele and expect them to act as such. In the black community we have to get away from feeling like if they look like me then I don’t have to pay them. In the same breath if they don’t look like me I’m going to pay them anything for their product or service. We have to come to a place where we treat black business owners just like any other business owner and respect their prices and services. Thank you for checking out this episode of Introspective Insight: The Black Wallstreet Podcast and we hope you come back next week with a new set of ears. jim and Richard talk about the culture of the hobby, the gatekeepers it creates, and the assumptions hobby publishers have about breaking in. With brutal opinions and frank honesty, the conversation is organic, at times rambling, but in the end entertaining, Can you tell we stink at this?

Today’s guest proves that some people can transform a quirky hobby into a profitable business. Joe Brewer reached out to me with his story a few weeks ago. His quirky hobby is arcade and pinball repairs and restoration. Salvaging an old, abadoned Ms. Pac Man arcade machine turned into a hobby of restoring vintage arcade and pinball machines which were found through Craigslist, online forums, or simply word of mouth. Joe has such a passion for this that he even has a full-blown arcade – Brewer's Arcade, it’s called - in his home that you can actually visit. It’s open to the public a couple times per year. To date, he’s made a profit flipping games that he has restored and then sold and makes extra income running a YouTube channel, Brewers Arcade, which specializes in left handed guitars and you guessed it, arcade games! A little financial background on Joe - He and his wife live an anti-debt and fairly frugal lifestyle – their only debt is a mortgage where they make extra payments when possible. They both live within 2 miles of their jobs and save money by either walking or biking to work. Joe was even able to start a program at his office that pays employees a small stipend to take alternative transportation to work. Joe and his wife’s lifestyle are an example of how you can find unique ways to make extra cash to pay down debt and hopefully, retire at an early age.
## Starting a local Drupal community * When did you start the DrupalCampNE meetups? * Started due to meeting a friend Richard at DrupalCons in Paris, Copenhagen and Denver and saying how crazy it was that we met at DrupalCons across the world but not in the North East where we’re both native. So we setup a meeting and promoted it on twitter and with some others we knew had at least dabbled with Drupal. We had 6 people at our first meeting and that happened in a pub which was to set the stage for the future meetups which have all been held in pubs. * I’ve thought about how cool it would be to start a local camp, but we don’t have a lot of people even coming to our meetups. What have you (or other organizers) done to get consistent attendance to events? * Consistency… Mixup of talks and social but always keep it social so expectations are not too high. For the camp we needed there to be a few people interested and then had backing from my company to allow us to dedicate time. Dedicated time has been vital. * How large is a typical meetup? What’s the average attendence? * We get anything from between 5 - 20 people attending but its really a mixup again, depends heavily on the day to some extend (holidays etc.) but also on if there is a talk. Our WP vs Drupal talk got a LOT of people :) * How far do people travel to get to your meetups? * We’ve had people doing a round trip of 100 miles before because there is no meetup in the North of the North West… but usually people come from Newcastle or there abouts. We lose a few people since its too far for them to come for sure. ## DrupalCampNE * When did you start organizing a Drupal Camp for the North East of England? * August 2013 - started asking/checking about venue * Went to other camps in UK to promote and to share info * November 2013 - announced the date around DrupalCamp North West * What were some of the challenges you faced? Were there any unexpected ones that stick out to you? * Local attendees * Sponsors * Cancelled talks * Outsourcing - Venue * What went really well for you? How did you plan for it? * The feelings of collaborating - fresh eyes were really liberated. * The venue was loved * The talks by Morten and Holly Ross * What advice would you give to someone who’s planning a camp now? Or will be soon? * Plan really well in advance * Find a great venue and try to get it for free :) * Have the freedom to make decisions - keep a small team? * Get sponsors early! * Get speakers early!
