The Smart Passive Income Online Business and Blogging Podcast
#726 Much of the knowledge I acquired when I started blogging is still with me. I have my early inspirations, Darren Rowse, Yaro Starak, and Seth Godin, to thank for that! In fact, one of Seth Godin's concepts that I often return to is the power of naming it. But what is it? It can be anything you teach or create. When you label something, you make it real. The messy middle, the part of the entrepreneurial journey between early excitement for an idea and when you finally reach your goals, comes to mind. Eric Partaker's 3 Alarms strategy, discussed in Wednesday's episode, is another example. So, how do you coin relevant terms in your business? Join this session to hear me brainstorm new ideas and come up with Fake Flynn-ing. Tune in to find out what that's all about and how to start naming things for your audience! Yaro Starak started his business ownership journey as a high school kid with a passion for playing Magic The Gathering. MTG is a highly popular tabletop card game, which has gained a massive underground following for many years now. Yaro started his website about MTG and later evolved into blogging, selling training courses, and email marketing. Now Yaro is the Founder of InboxDone, a company that helps busy entrepreneurs release themselves from "Inbox Prison" by providing a human being to respond to emails so business owners can better focus their time elsewhere. If you feel bogged down by your email, inbox InboxDone could be just the solution you need. inboxdone.com yaro.blog
Yaro is the co-founder of InboxDone.com, an email management company with a team of 45+ serving clients including restaurant owners, venture capitalists, accountants, doctors, lawyers, real estate agents, car retailers, online coaches and more. In this episode, Dean Newlund and Yaro Starak discuss:The problem with Email Automation and delegation How to break the addiction to email Staying in your zone of genius Key Takeaways:The problem with email is that they take away time from doing important things while making you feel like you are accomplishing stuff. It takes away your attention from your main agenda for the day. The two key components to making a more efficient business and boosting your growth are to automate through technology and to make sure you are delegating to other people. Email is an addiction, break it by setting a measurable goal and making email the reward. An example would be to write 2000 words before checking your inbox. Do a brain dump and itemize all the tasks you're doing now and tasks that you should do. Put a circle around the ones that you can do and then put all the things you're not going to do into a “to-delegate list”. "You don't manufacture time, it's an exchange, something has to go for you to get time back. And I learned very early on that the only way I can get some time back was to start handing over tasks to people." — Yaro Starak See Dean's TedTalk “Why Business Needs Intuition” here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EEq9IYvgV7I Connect with Yaro Starak: Website: https://InboxDone.comLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/yarostarak/ Connect with Dean:YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCgqRK8GC8jBIFYPmECUCMkwWebsite: https://www.mfileadership.com/The Mission Statement E-Newsletter: https://www.mfileadership.com/blog/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/deannewlund/Twitter: https://twitter.com/deannewlundFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/MissionFacilitators/Email: dean.newlund@mfileadership.comPhone: 1-800-926-7370 Show notes by Podcastologist: Justine Talla Audio production by Turnkey Podcast Productions. Stay tuned to the end of the interview where I'll give you some actionable insights that I learned from my guest. These insights are also in the show notes. As always, thanks for listening. Now on to my guest for today, Yaro Starak, cofounder of InboxDone, a virtual assistant service for managing email. All Yaro knew when he started university in Queensland, Australia was that he didn't want a traditional job. It was the late 1990s, and the internet was opening up new, exciting opportunities. Yaro created a website on Magic The Gathering, a competitive card game and made a modest income by selling cards, in the days before PayPal even existed. Within a few years, he'd launched another business offering translation and editing services to students whose first language wasn't English. This business grew to the point where Yaro could make a living. From there he tried blogging, eventually also growing that into a business where he offered courses around blogging and ultimately building Blog Mastermind and the Laptop Lifestyle Academy. As a busy entrepreneur, Yaro was spending a lot of time answering emails. He decided to come up with a way to delegate these tasks, which helped him to build a business while freeing up more time. Eventually, he decided to develop the system he'd set up into a business idea. He invited one of his assistants to cofound this new company, InboxDone, which has since grown to now having 45 team members working for CEOs and managers around the world. In this episode, Yaro and I talk about how to build a service-oriented business, the challenges of scaling, and the power of delegation. Now, let's get better together. Actionable Insights Like many of my other guests, Yaro's original idea came from a problem he faced. But, he still spent time trying out and validating the idea to make sure it was marketable before jumping in headfirst into offering it at scale. Yaro describes some of the processes he and his cofounder use to scale. They ask what it would look like and what they would need to take on more clients. As the company grows, they know they need to also add managers in order to coordinate and oversee teams. InboxDone illustrates the power of delegation in order to grow a successful business. The more you can delegate, the more you can focus on the work that only you can do. While it may take some time up front to put the systems in place, eventually you can free up more of your time for other things. KEY TAKEAWAYS Automation is a great way to free up time and get things done more efficiently. With email automation, you can have your emails delivered automatically by people who are qualified for the task at hand--whether that's sending out customer quotes or responding back as soon as possible. Software like this can help with your inboxes by making sure there's always someone ready when needed so all those important messages don't pile up too high. BEST MOMENTS “Although every industry is different, every person is different, emails are actually quite similar for most people. There are a lot of similar types of messages going in and out.” “People do not deal with their emails well enough. They outsource everything else. They hire website designer to do their website. They hire accountant to do their accounting. They hire coaches to help with other things and mentors. All kinds of team members to do things. But they always do emails themselves and it is the thing that they spend most time on.” “Business models are kinda like the step one because for you be able to automate something how that business actually works and makes money and what your role perform in it very much dictates how you can automate it.” “Most important thing if your goal is to become the owner or the investor, you're going to need to get very good at solving the people problem and the technology problems.” “If you are not familiar with the industry then those kind of terms are kinda confusing or what it is that even mean so every industry has those and they have their own sort of interclub of unique terminology that.” ABOUT THE HOST Sıla Erol started her journey at TTC wetranslate Ltd as a Project Coordinator and has been continuing as a Key Account Manager after graduating from Translation and Interpreting Department at Ege University in Izmir/Turkey. In this episode of the Thoughtful Entrepreneur, your host Josh Elledge speaks with the founder and CMO of https://inboxdone.com/ (InboxDone), Yaro Starak. InboxDone is an email management virtual executive assistance service. They both develop email management systems and assign their clients executive assistants who will learn everything about the business so they can adequately manage their clients' inboxes. More often than not, InboxDone's clients want executive assistants who can respond on their behalf. Josh and Yaro explore how delegation is necessary for growth. It's not easy to relent control of those aspects of your business, but it's absolutely essential. Too many entrepreneurs use their inbox as busy work and they get caught up in the mundane work. As a business owner, your inbox should serve as a way to prioritize growth and connection. InboxDone uses a high-touch point process that combines top talent and executive assistance with tried-and-true processes. Yaro shares that his first client was himself – years ago, he sought a better way to manage his inbox, which is how he began developing the processes that resulted in InboxDone. Each client that InboxDone works with has a tailored and unique hand off process. Each business is strategically paired with executive assistants on the InboxDone team. There's a natural relationship and trust-building phase that comes with outsourcing inbox management, but that's where InboxDone thrives. They're your long term partner when it comes to effective, quality inbox management. They both provide the management and also the training – that way you never have to worry about teaching someone the ins and outs of your email. Yaro explains that using an executive assistant was the key to developing a great inbox management system. According to InboxDone's website, their email assistants are dedicated to streamlining their clients' email management needs. Rather than having to sort through their inboxes and responding to every urgent email themselves, an email virtual assistant steps in to get the job done for them. InboxDone responds to your emails, acts as help desk customer support, lead follow-ups, develop systems for email handling, social media responses/messaging, and more. InboxDone is dedicated to retaining top talent by offering competitive wages so that no matter what, their team is in it for the long haul to support you. With their support, you can effortlessly maintain communication with clients and customers, stay on top of any critical updates or developments, and more without having to dive into your inbox yourself. Dave Lukas, The Misfit Entrepreneur_Breakthrough Entrepreneurship
This week's Misfit Entrepreneur is Yaro Starak. Yaro has an awesome entrepreneur story. From growing up sleeping in an old van parked in the backyard of his small home in Australia to working multiple jobs trying to make ends meet, putting himself through college – Yaro learned he wasn't an employee. His first breakthrough came in the form a website where he gained following and traction making money with banner ads. I won't spoil his story, as I want him to tell it, but he went on to create more online businesses, especially in the blogging space making millions, and created his financial independence. Today he invests in companies – making over 30+ investments to date, continues to build others and coach entrepreneurs. He's been featured everything from Forbes to Entrepreneur and Business Insider. His latest project is called Inbox Done, an email management company. I asked him to come on the show to share what he's learned on his journey and how you can use it in your life. www.Yaro.blog www.InboxDone.com Yaro shares his story and his experience during this time having business and property in Ukraine. His father was born in Ukraine and escaped after WWII and immigrated to Australia where Yaro was born. When Yaro turned 18, it was 1998 during the Dotcom boom. He started a card game business, a media site where it had commentary, e-commerce store, and he sold advertising. When he went to college, he started an essay editing business to offer editing/proofreading that became a full-time business. In 2005, he got into blogging and found a lot of success and still does it today. He was an early adopter. He sold off the essay company and card business and focused on blogging full time. He turned the blogging into creating courses, e-books, a membership site, etc. It was the first business that did over a million dollars. He traveled the world living in over 26 cities running the business. He did it up until 5 years ago. He then started his current company Inbox Done to help provide outsourced professional assistants. What are some of the principles you have applied to your different businesses that have allowed you to be consistently successful? Compounding a skill set. For example, with the card business, content helped build a community, this gave an audience that could be monetized. Content was used to drive sales in the essay company through SEO. Content is also a driver for Inbox Done. Using the written/spoken word to build an audience and build trust has been the common principle used to build the businesses. Best advice on how to write good content and sell with it? First is the delivery mechanism. It is all about technology and it is constantly changing. Email has been tried and true alongside a blog/website. What you put into the content will follow the same strategy. Look at what kind of content you will produce and how it relates to your goal of building the business. Storytelling is powerful which is intimate and grows trust. Step 1 is always telling a story. But, your story telling must turn into the strategic goal you have for the business. Each business will require different content and stories focused for it. What does your business do and what are the rejection points from people purchasing – use story to discuss these and show why people should buy. Email newsletters are most important. Email is the only true platform you have 100% control of, so building your list is critical. Can you layout the components of your business models that you have duplicated? It is different depending on the product or service. It starts with what you are excited about building what need you can meet in the marketplace. Next, you must understand the right business model to capitalize on the need that must be met. Then it is all about execution. If you choose one model to work with, which one is best? Yaro at different times in his life would answer this differently. Blogging was very simple, but it required consistency and constant creation of content – you're on a treadmill. It is harder to scale. A business that is more SAAS or marketplace oriented, it can scale easier. If he had to choose, it would be to build a company that can scale without him. Talk to us about blogging. How does someone create a million-dollar business blogging? It's changed a lot. Things are way more crowded and there are way more platforms. Niching down is important for blogging today. Story telling about real results will always work. How content and stories are important. Stay specialized and differentiate yourself in every way you can to help you stand out. Double down on everything that is different. The content will help you stand out in search engines. At the 28 min, Yaro gives an example. When you go narrow, you still have a large enough audience in today's world to have a really good audience. Thoughts on driving traffic? It continues to be very dynamic. Google ads and SEO can work well for niche. Podcasts are a great medium. A solid referral program for clients to refer. Branding to drive a sense of awareness in your niche – what is the message you need to state that stands out and makes you different? Build an email list! Get published – go in front of audiences that are interested in what you are doing. Whatever platforms those are – get in front of people on them. Things do not work straightaway or at all sometimes, so you must be ready to pivot and try others. Keep trying and testing mediums. How do you keep up with everything and stay successful across your businesses? Genuine interest and passion for what he does which drives intent. Intent drives focus. Researching and learning to stay on top and be a leader in his space. Most important is to make sure you structure your life and business for the free time you need and the time you need to keep on top of things. 80/20 Rule. Focus on the most important things and delegate or eliminate the rest. It's not so much about “working hard and the time you put in,” its about working hard on the right things that move the needle and it's ok if takes just a few hours a day. Focus on getting the results. Use technological automation. Build teams by hiring or outsourcing. Best Quote: It's not so much about “working hard and the time you put in.” It's about working hard on the right things that move the needle and it's ok if takes just a few hours a day. Focus on getting the results. Yaro's Misfit 3: There will be ups and downs, but neither will last forever. Rest is the foundation for performance. Focus on where your creativity can add value for others. Show Sponsors Ecom Automation Gurus (Save 15%) www.EcomAutomationGurus.com Five Minute Journal www.MisfitEntrepreneur.com/Journal

At the time I am writing this, I personally know people who, are trying to survive in bomb shelters in Kyiv, and others who have taken up arms to defend this country. Here at The Conference Room our thoughts and prayers are with our friends and colleagues and the whole of the Ukrainian people. But thoughts and prayers are not enough. As President Kennedy said in the name of Thomas Burke, all it takes for evil to succeed is for good men to do nothing. So, let's do something. In the shownotes for this episode, and for every episode while the people of Ukraine are fighting for their country, we'll post links of how you can help: reputable organizations you can donate to that will help the Ukrainian people and reliable sources of information about what's happening on the ground. Yaro Starak is Co-Founder and CMO at InboxDone.com. He began his entrepreneurial career at 18 years old, starting a website about a trading card game. A few years later he launched an online essay editing business, then began blogging and podcasting about entrepreneurship in 2005. In business, Yaro focused on freedom as a business objective but wasn't getting that because of pressure of managing bombardment of business emails, continuously. The more success Yaro had with his business, the more emails showed up. Because of the volume of email coming in, he couldn't provide the level of customer and sales support that he knew he should. Everything changed when Yaro hired his first email assistant, who completely took over his business inbox, unlocking the kind of freedom he always wanted. Simplifying the business by delegating and creating team, is what Yaro is gonna talk about in this episode. Is blogging still relevant? Does it matter in the age of social media? And if you do blog hacking effectively, does it actually gets you results? Well, I'm very pleased that Yaro Starak has agreed to answer those questions for us on the Ideas Lab Podcast. I've been following Yaro from somewhere around 2008, maybe even a little bit earlier. And he's something of a legend of the online marketing world. He started his first online business in 1999, when he was still 19 years old. He's never had a full time job. And he's always had some kind of online business for the last 20 years, from selling services like essay editing and email management, to buying and selling websites to blogging and digital products. So I'm really glad that we could dive into what really works in blogging these days, and why we should all still be writing a blog. Just imagine that you never had to look at your email inbox, read or reply to any emails ever again. How much free time would you have? What could you use that time for in your business or in your personal life? That is a question I explored with Claire Giovino in today's episode of the ideas lab podcast, because she has set up a business to do exactly this for her clients. She launched Inboxdone in 2017, and has grown the business to multiple six figures in just 11 months with zero startup capital. She currently manages a growing team of remote inbox managers and upwards of 3000 plus emails a day, all while travelling the world or at least until recently. So I wanted to ask her what are we all getting wrong about email and if we want to move away from our own inbox and stop it dominating our working day, how do you really outsource something that is so fundamental to what we do day in and day out? And I also wanted to find out how Claire has made such a success of I Inboxdone and how she's made that work in a partnership with Yaro Starak, who is one of the founders, one of the pioneers of internet marketing and blogging. So it's going to be a great episode. Let's dive in. Best wishes, John For full links and notes please visit: https://theideaslab.org/clairegiovino ______________________________________________________________ Music provided by Argofox: TheDiabolicalWaffle – My Wish https://youtu.be/sRWEMjYR6e4
“What you focus on in the moment becomes who you are in the future… but until you find direction, every path looks interesting." Yaro Starak is blogger and podcaster who decided after graduating college that he would never work for someone else or have a real job again. Since the age of 19, Yaro has been running his own online businesses that have gone on to produce seven figures. He has been featured in Forbes, Entrepreneur, Foundr and interviewed in close to 300 different podcasts. The average lifespan of a blog is reportedly 3-4 months, whereas Yaro's blog continues to inspire countless readers 13 years later. Today's episode is definitely not just for entrepreneurs, but if you're interested in jumping to the really meaty topics and don't have time for the full episode, skip ahead to the 13-minute mark. Highlights In today's episode, we talk about: 1) How to design your ideal day 2) Why energy management is more important than time management 3) How to create a life where 20% of your time is spent is working and 80% is spent doing the things you love 4) How to create a decision filter and when to say no 5) Why curiosity is more important than any outcome or goal) 6) How to choose the obstacles you want to overcome Behind the Scenes Yaro became one of my clients a few years ago when I started my own business. We then joined forces and cofounded InboxDone.com, which allows busy people to outsource their inbox so that they never have to deal with emails again. After reading Yaro's blog for years, I feel very lucky to now call him my business partner and my friend. As Annie Dillard says, "How we spend our days is, of course, how we spend our lives." I'm drawn to the idea of designing your ideal day, one where you spend the most time on things that bring you energy and joy (instead of keeping those things in the margins of our lives). I often ask people to walk me through a day in their lives so that I can get a sense of what's important to them. Over the past year, I've been treating each day like an experiment and applying different iterations to see how much energy I have during different activities and times of day. I've learned that I'm most productive when I immediately login to my laptop to begin work right when I wake up. I've also learned my energy is lowest between 2pm and 7pm, then I get a second burst of focus after dinner. My processes are still evolving (clearly not every day is ideal), but it really opened up once I started to treat my day-design like a big experiment. Who should listen? If you're struggling to create something new, but the process is feeling heavy or arduous… If you want to design your ideal day, but aren't sure how to start... If you want to learn the exact questions to ask yourself in order to become “unstuck”... ...have a listen. For new episodes, questions and quotes, sign up at TheBetterQuestions.com. Each bi-weekly email is packed with insight and applicable takeaways. And if you're enjoying these episodes, please share with a fellow podcast listener. That's how the show will continue grow!

He started playing a card game called “Magic: The Gathering” and became a great fan of it so much so that he built his first website dedicated to the game. The website was built using GeoCities (a free website building tool) and he built a strong following through articles written by himself and other card players. That turned into a real business because he created a card game store which did very well. He also put up banner ads on the site and used to make $500 to $1,000 during the best times. The business gave him great experience in basic internet marketing. Later on, while still in university, he started an essay editing business mainly targeted towards international students with English as a second language. His family would help as editors on the site and later on he hired other editors as contractors. It was Yaro’s first real “laptop lifestyle business” because it enabled him to travel while doing it. It was hands-off for him because he had contract essay editors and all he would need to do is the website marketing through SEO and putting up posters at university campuses. His job was sending emails between customers and the editors, then he would take a 50% profit margin for every job. Eventually when he got enough volume, he hired an administrative assistant to look after the email job. It was a great full-time business and he made enough money, so he didn't need to get a job after graduating. After graduating he focused on business and travelling to different global destinations. Eventually he sold the essay editing and card game business because he was no longer passionate about them. Blogging In 2004, Yaro learnt about blogging, so he started a blog and writing about business. Consequently, in January 2005, he registered http://www.entrepreneurs-journey.com/ (www.entrepreneurs-journey.com) purely as a hobby where he wrote 2 to 3 articles a week talking about running his card game and essay editing businesses. In the end, he sold off the card game and essay editing businesses to become a full-time blogger and information marketer. Period in full time business Yaro first made a full-time income in 2003 from his online essay editing business and has never looked back since. Utilizing his business degree Yaro says that he didn't use it a lot since he never got formally employed but he says going to study business enabled him to access the internet which developed his interest in online based business. Core revenue streams Right now Yaro only sells his own digital teaching products including a flagship course, membership site, and a range of lower priced products like ebooks and the interviews club. All these digital products are created by Yaro, and all sold from his blog and email list. He has a bit of affiliate income and other investments. He also has a...

Well, I'm reading it at the moment and I'm thinking “Gosh, there's so many things I can still stop doing.” Anyway, one of the things that I do need to stop doing is my own email, and our guest today on the show, I'm very keen to talk to today's guest about this because he wrote a fantastic blog post about this a while ago which triggered me to bring him on the show. He's not only a friend of mine, but he's very big in the online marketing space online. I would call him sort of the King of people who would want to start a blog and figure out how on earth to get traffic to your blog. And get going with your blogging journey. Yaro Starak, welcome to the show. Matt: Welcome Yaro. Yaro: Thank you guys. Love to be here and looking forward to talking about something I don't really talk about on podcasts very much. Barbara: Yes, obviously you would usually be interviewed about online marketing, getting started in blogging. Tell us a bit about your background, tell the listeners a bit more about your background just to get things going. About Yaro Yaro: Yeah, you're quite correct. I do normally talk about blogging on I'd say, 95% of the podcast interviews I do. Primarily because that's what I teach and what I'm known for, and I've been blogging myself for, we're in year 12 now of blogging. I started in 2005, so it's been a career. I've pretty much had an online entrepreneurship career my entire adult life. It's been great to me. I have to really thank the Gods for being born in a time when I can use the internet as a way to run a business, and I've pretty much made my living entirely online.
Do you have a blog? Are you interested in figuring out how to actually make money from your blog? Today's guest is a good friend of mine, has been in the online marketing space for over a decade and is the founder and writer of Entrepreneurs-Journey.com It is the BLOG to read if you LOVE the idea of combining entrepreneurship and blogging. But before we get into the interview, let's run through housekeeping, shall we? If you are new here, Hello and welcome! This is THE place dedicated to purpose-driven individuals and passionate creators. We are all about learning how to create greater impact and interviewing people that are choosing legacy over currency. Last week, we had productivity expert, Craig Ballantyne on the show talking about productivity and how to get shit done strategically. Going back to this week's mystery guest, he had a number of successful businesses before he became well known for blogging and helping entrepreneurs blog around the world. One of his businesses was a proofreading business while the another one has to do with Magic: The Gathering card game trading forum and e-commerce site In the interview, we breakdown his journey from digital nomad to world famous blogger. We also deep dive into how businesses and entrepreneurs can leverage the power of blogs in TODAY's economy. I asked him how relevant is blogging in 2016 because let's be honest, we don't need MORE content in our lives right? And his answer BLEW me away.
