It’s another light TV week, courtesy of the holiday weekend, but that just gives us time to dive deep on a few of our quarantine favorites. Noel and Kate kick things off with Our Week in TV, starting with the reality offerings, including the premiere of HBO’s I’ll Be Gone in the Dark, another nail-biting Jelle’s Marble Runs: Marble League 2020 (go O’Rangers!), and the latest improv challenge on RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars. Then we move to genre, with the first of a two-parter on Stargirl, another high-stakes time travel adventure on Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD, and now that Kate’s caught up with it, last week’s Adventure Time: Distant Lands premiere. Then we head to the spotlight section and get some serious food envy watching Hulu’s Taste the Nation with Padma Lakshmi. This week, The Golden State Killer, pleaded guilty to 13 murders and 13 charges of kidnapping in a crime spree that terrorized California from 1973 to 1986. His capture was aided by the help of a team of investigative writers including my guest Billy Jensen, who is co-author of a book about the case that is also now an HBO series called I'll Be Gone In The Dark. I revisit my 2018 conversation with Jensen, in which he talks to me about this horrifying story, the process of writing the book, and his path to becoming a true-crime journalist and author.

Michelle McNamara is a hero of ours. --------------------------------------------------------I'LL BE GONE IN THE DARK, based on the book of the same name by Michelle McNamara, explores her investigation into the dark world of this violent predator she dubbed "The Golden State Killer." The series, directed by Academy Award nominee and Emmy-winning director Liz Garbus, is a detective story told in McNamara’s own words, through exclusive original recordings and excerpts from her book. It is also a posthumous reflection into the soul of McNamara, whose True Crime Diaries blog and years of relentless determination for justice for the victims helped keep the case alive and in the public eye.----------------------------------------------------------We want to give you the best sounding and most well-researched podcast possible. This week Patrick brings Ari Shaffir's Skeptic Tank, Zane goes fictiony with Starship Sofa and Liz jumps on what's sure to be the next true crime podcast hit Jensen & Holes: The Murder Squad.Liz Recommends - Jensen & Holes: The Murder Squadhttp://themurdersquad.com/GUYS! Billy Jensen and Paul Holes have a podcast! If you don't know who the hell Liz is talking about then you're obviously not a Murderino. Paul Holes is a retired detective who helped solve the Golden State Killer case and Billy Jensen is the kickass investigative journalist who helped finish Michelle McNamara's book on the case (I'll Be Gone In The Dark) and now works as a police consultant. The first new podcast on Karen Kilgariff and Georgia Hardstark's Exactly Right network, this is the podcast that invites YOU to help solve their cold cases. It's ARMCHAIR DETECTIVE TIME."Each week ride shotgun with retired cold case investigator Paul Holes and investigative journalist Billy Jensen as they attempt to solve an unsolved murder case using a variety of methods, from routine shoe-leather work to advanced technologies like familial DNA searches and social media geotargeting. But their secret weapon in the search for justice is staring right at these notes. You have been watching and listening to stories about violent crimes and investigations for years. Comedian. Writer. Actor. Producer. Podcaster. Jew. Ari is one of my favourite comedians right now. His iconoclastic and unrelenting style of comedy is one I certainly appreciate. Every now and then you'll come across a solo podcast or a panel discussion. For Zane & Liz: #277 Henry Rollins, if you want more I really liked #350 Shooter.http://arithegreat.com/category/podcast/Zane Recommends - Starship Sofahttp://www.starshipsofa.com/Zane has brought in one of his old favourites this week, an audio fiction podcast! Hosted by the INIMITABLE accent of Tony C Smith, Starship Sofa is an audio magazine style show, similar in style to some of the great SF print magazines out there like Asimovs and Analog. A typical show includes poetry, flash fiction, fact article, reviews and main fiction. It’s produced by many and put together by one. Writers who have had there work narrated on the podcast include Michael Moorcock, Joe Haldeman, Bruce Sterling, David Brin, Harry Harrison, Ted Chiang, George R. R. The book was completed post-humously, and it is through Michelle's dedication to catching the killer and her ideas of how to do so that they finally did - last spring. Andrew Manning (AKA Young Andrew) a comic that Rebecca started with back in Connecticut, comes on and shares unique insight about the book. They talk about sociopaths, and psychopaths, the 70's, serial killers (this one and others) the daughters, wife, and cat of the killer, and inevitably, Rebecca's ex-boyfriends. The team’s effort covers a wide range of what the book became, from trying to stay on the path that Michelle had created, to the origins of the title, and the decision of what to do with the epilogue. Amateur sleuth and true crime journalist Michelle McNamara became obsessed with solving a violent cold case of a serial rapist turned murderer who terrorized California for over a decade in the 70s and 80s. She poured over police reports, interviewed victims, and embedded herself in the online communities that were as obsessed with the case as she was.
