POPULARITY
It's politics on paper. With the Canadian federal election just around the corner, Karoline Bordeau and Jacob Shymanski explore two popular books that shine a light on the two main political players. Jacob reviews Ripper: The Making of Pierre Poilievre by Mark Bourrie—a compelling biography of a driven and divisive politician. Karoline dives into Values by Mark Carney, a thick, heady exploration of economics, ethics, and leadership from the former Bank of Canada and Bank of England governor.Plus, Karoline offers a review of Love, Loss, and What We Ate by Padma Lakshmi—a memoir that's as much about identity as it is about indulgence. It's two legends, one stage on today's show as we dip into the Jubilee archives. Don't miss this wise and warm conversation between Madhur Jaffrey and Padma Lakshmi from the Cherry Bombe Jubilee Conference in Brooklyn in Spring 2019. Madhur, says Padma, “is the greatest living writer on Indian food—ever.” Padma, the former host of “Top Chef,” the star and creator of “Taste the Nation,” and a best-selling author, interviewed Madhur and it was a riveting exchange that touched on a wide range of topics: protesting with Mahatma Gandhi, working with the legendary cookbook editor Judith Jones, facing discrimination as an Indian actress, and cheering on the young women championing both Indian food and representation today, including Priya Krishna and Meera Sodha. Introducing Madhur and Padma are Suzanne and Michelle Rousseau. The sisters and culinary superstars from Jamaica are the authors of the cookbooks “Provisions” and “Caribbean Potluck.”If you're attending Jubilee, don't miss our first-ever Jubilee Pre-Game on Zoom this Wednesday, April 2nd, at 3 p.m. EST—an exclusive session for ticket holders to get all the insider details before the big day.For Jubilee 2025 tickets, click here. Welcome to episode 100. We hosted a live show to celebrate at Little Joy Cocktails in Echo Park, and what you're about to hear is the recording of said live show. Father Sal and I were joined by Eater's Mona Holmes to run through the headlines of the day and to play a round of Chef's Kiss Big Miss. We debuted the first-ever LA Food Pod quiz - big thanks and sincere apologies to David Turkell of Turk's Pizza Party for participating. And, finally, we had a conversation with Jackson Kalb of Ospi, Jemma, and Top Chef fame, on running a restaurant in today's tricky economic environment, among other things. But first, Father Sal joins me for some slightly indulgent navel-gazing on what this podcast means to us, and we also quickly touch on some exciting events we attended this week, including a very insightful panel discussion on restaurant PR and marketing hosted by New School, and a comedy show presented by none other than former Top Chef host Padma Lakshmi. Spring is here and we have a fun and light spring menu this week on the podcast. Stephen Garrett hops into frame and tries to answer host Neal Pollack's question: Why do we need a Ghostbusters: The Next Generation? Stephen says that 'Frozen Empire' is far better and more fun than the previous maudlin Ghostbusters reboot, but there are too many busters, too much lore, too much reverence. Neal makes the point that the original Ghostbusters was irreverent and almost conservative in its middle finger to the liberal Hollywood establishment. Stephen points out that it was a shit-talking working-man hangout movie. 'Frozen Empire' is awash in nostalgia for culture it doesn't even begin to understand.'Top Chef' has managed to reboot itself without its host Padma Lakshmi, replacing her with former champion Kristin Kish. Rachel Llewellyn joins Neal and they basically have nothing but nice things to say about Kish's vibe on the show, about the production quality, and about the quality of the cooking, the competition, and of its narrative abilities. In a food-media world oversaturated with cooking competitions, Top Chef remains state of the art, and we're glad to have it back.Magically, Stephen Garrett returns to the podcast to wax enthusiastically about the reboot of 'Road House.' Neal points out that the movie basically has no plot and no real character development, but Stephen doesn't seem to think those things are necessary in a movie. He argues that we should accept Road House on its own terms and just let the dumb wide-angle action carry us along. They agree to disagree, then bash each other over the head with a chair.Enjoy the show!

Megyn Kelly begins the show by revealing some leftist hypocrisy, featuring Jimmy Kimmel and Hollywood's blackface past, Robert De Niro's hypocrisy and Trump hysteria, George Stephanopoulos' past shaming of sexual assault victims while working for Bill Clinton, his outrageous questioning of Rep. Nancy Mace over her support of Trump and past rape, the leftist hypocrisy from ABC and the rest of the corporate media, and more. Then The Daily Wire's Andrew Klavan, author of "The House of Love and Death," joins to talk about Hollywood's obvious hypocrisy on who gets canceled and who gets celebrated, the Oscars somehow mostly honoring white people, celebrity chef Padma Lakshmi critiquing Megyn but going on Jimmy Kimmel's show, all the celebs who don't seem to mind Kimmel's past blackface, how “Morning Joe” continues smearing Mace while defending Stephanopoulos, how the left smeared Tara Reade when she accused Joe Biden of sexual assault, Biden apologizing for using the word “illegal” when talking about the immigrant who killed Laken Riley, Trump meeting with Riley's parents, and more. Then Daily Mail columnist Maureen Callahan joins to discuss the Stephanopoulos hypocrisy, the massive controversy around a new photo of Kate Middleton and her kids, evidence the photo is fake and worries about her health, major photo agencies "killing" the photo, the Royal response, the "Zone of Interest" director attacks Israel in his Oscars acceptance speech, whether the Oscars really started late because of a pro-Palestinian protest, a ridiculous Kate Winslet NYT profile, and more.Klavan- https://www.amazon.com/House-Death-Cameron-Winter-Mysteries/dp/1613164467Callahan- https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/columnist-1519519/Maureen-Callahan-For-DailyMail-Com.html Follow The Megyn Kelly Show on all social platforms: YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/MegynKellyTwitter: http://Twitter.com/MegynKellyShowInstagram: http://Instagram.com/MegynKellyShowFacebook: http://Facebook.com/MegynKellyShow Find out more information at: https://www.devilmaycaremedia.com/megynkellyshow

This week's guest on Herbal Radio is the wise-spirited author and curandera (ku·ran·de·ra), Felicia Cocotzin Ruiz. We recorded our interview with Felicia prior to her keynote presentation for the 2023 Fall Virtual Free Herbalism Project, so be sure to check out her recorded presentation after listening to this episode! In Felicia's words, Curanderismo (ku·ran·de·ris·mo) is a 500-year-old traditional healing practice that is still in existence today. It is influenced by Spanish, Indigenous Mexican, the Moors, West African, and Native American traditional healing practices, and is a result of the blending of these cultures during colonization. Today, we sit down with Felicia and learn about her family who originated from northern New Mexico. She reflects on her childhood spent uncovering the power of plant medicine through her great-grandmother, who was a naturally gifted and knowledgeable elder curandera. Felicia's youthful eyes were fascinated by her great-grandmother's ancestral medicine-making practices, which soon blossomed her intrigue into connecting with the Indigenous principle of one's medicine being one's food. Shaped through the lens of her ancestors, her practice led her to publishing her book on elemental recipes and rituals, Earth Medicines. As always, we truly hope you enjoy today's Herbal Radio episode, thank you for tagging along with us for another botanical adventure! Felicia Cocotzin Ruiz is a traditional healer, award-winning author, and indigenous foods activist recognized for her work with food and lifestyle as medicine. As a child, she was deeply influenced by her great-grandmother, who was well-known in her New Mexico community as a curandera. Also called by the healing medicine, Felicia honored her own spirit and began learning folk herbalism, whole food cooking, and other holistic modalities with Indigenous teachers across the Southwest–where she works with the sun, the moon, and the elements, offering medicine workshops and one-on-one healing sessions for her community. Felicia's work has been featured in Spirituality & Health, Forbes, Bon Appétit, and several other media outlets including The Original Americans episode on Padma Lakshmi's Taste The Nation (Hulu). Felicia presents frequently around the country on traditional healing practices, culinary medicine, holistic wellness, and Native American food sovereignty for nonprofits, universities, and museums–including the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian. Discover the poignant world of immigration grief with Vera Snow, a spiritual director whose life was irrevocably shaped by her parents' flight from Czechoslovakia. Vera's intimate understanding of the hardships faced by refugees becomes the centerpiece of our latest episode, where the past's urgent fight for survival meets the present's journey towards healing. Her unique perspective as a child of refugees offers a profound exploration into the layered emotions that accompany cultural displacement and the forging of new identities in unfamiliar lands.Woven through our conversation are the delicate threads of cultural identity, traditions, and the balancing act between assimilation and heritage preservation. I reflect alongside Vera on the personal tug-of-war of growing up with Czech customs in the embrace of America, capturing the nuanced experience many immigrants and their descendants navigate. We delve into the sense of loss felt during cultural adaptation, the building of communities that become surrogate families, and the often unspoken emotional toll that shapes the immigrant narrative.Closing with a heartfelt discussion on the universal themes of grief and storytelling, our episode emphasizes the transformative power of shared experiences. We examine how narratives from veterans to public figures like Padma Lakshmi serve as vessels for understanding and empathy. I feel so lucky because in the first season of my podcast, my guests have been incredibly vulnerable and we've covered a lot of ground in terms of our lives and careers. But I want to dig a little bit into a theme that's come up with quite a few guests and that's close to my heart – parenting. I became a parent for the first time in 2020 and it's all still very new to me. Having these conversations on the show with parents and soon-to-be parents has been really special for me. In this episode, you'll hear some of my favorite moments talking about parenthood with “Orange is The New Black” star Uzo Aduba, Busy Philipps of “Girls5Eva” and “Taste the Nation's” Padma Lakshmi. Christina can trace her Milwaukee and Wisconsin roots to the early 1800s. Her love of history comes from her father, who instilled the idea that we are all manifestations of our ancestors. Her interest in cooking began out of childhood necessity to feed herself and her siblings while her father worked in a factory. She prides herself on having a hungry mind interested in learning about people, the foods they eat, and the stories that arise from that convergence. If you asked 8-year-old me what I wanted to be when I grew up—my answer was always the same—a writer.
Josh Sharp and Aaron Jackson have been guests on Couples Therapy since we were a a live show in the back room of an East Village bar, and over the last ten years, every time we'd see them, we'd ask about their UCB musical that they were turning into a movie. Fucking Identical Twins was one of our favorite shows at UCB, and it was nuts, and we were really curious to see if it would ever get made. Well, folks, not only did it get made, but Dicks: The Musical is INCREDIBLE! Just a genuinely strange and hilarious film from moment one, we can't recommend it enough. Grab your N95s and air purifiers and anti-viral sprays and go see an 11am matinee STAT! And on this episode, Josh and Aaron reminisce with us about UCB and the time Padma Lakshmi took level one, the emotional issues of making a movie over a decade, working with a comedy partner and all the ego stuff around being the least famous people in your own movie. Oh, and of course, Barbara Streisand's 2016 album Movie Partners Sing Broadway! PLUS, obvi, we answer YOUR advice questions! If you'd like to ask your own advice questions, call 323-524-7839 and leave a VM or just DM us on IG or Twitter!Support the show on Patreon (two extra exclusive episodes a month!) or with a t-shirt (or a Jewboo shirt) and check out clips on YouTube! Dive deep into the culinary history of America with our esteemed guest Christina Ward. From riding in the Wienermobile with Padma Lakshmi for "Taste the Nation" to her intriguing contributions to transgressive art, Christina's journey is nothing short of remarkable. In her latest offering, "Holy Food: How Cults, Communes, and Religious Movements Influenced What We Eat—An American History," set to release on September 26, 2023, Christina meticulously unravels how religious beliefs intersect with politics, economics, and most intriguingly, food. This work presents an alternate story of America, spotlighting true believers, charlatans, visionaries, and the many who walked behind them. She navigates with precision between academic studies, first-hand interviews, cookbooks, and religious texts, offering fresh insights into American history, all viewed through the lens of our kitchens. In this episode, we journey through the annals of religious influence on American culinary habits, discovering how food fads became mainstream and how vague spiritual movements of the 20th century used food as both a lure and a leash. With over 75 recipes from varied religious and communal groups, coupled with more than 100 historic images, "Holy Food" promises to be a treasure trove for historians, food enthusiasts, and the curious souls alike. Quoting the founder of the International Krishna Consciousness organization, Prabhupada, "This business—eating, sleeping, sex life and defense—this is common to the animal and to the human being," we embark on a conversation that promises to satiate both the mind and soul. Join us as we traverse the crossroads of faith, history, and the tantalizing world of gastronomy with Christina Ward. We're re-airing one of this year's most popular episodes, our interview with Padma Lakshmi.Padma is brilliant, fearless, and currently experiencing the kind of success her younger self could only dream of. The second season of her Hulu show, Taste The Nation With Padma Lakshmi, dropped this spring. In it, she examines America's foodways and the history behind them. Padma is, of course, best known as the host of Bravo's Top Chef, currently in its 20th season.* In April, Padma was named to the Time 100 List of the year's most influential newsmakers and was featured in this year's Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue—the one with Martha Stewart on the cover. *In June, Padma announced she was leaving the cast of Top Chef. There's no question that Padma Lakshmi has had a multifaceted career. After working as a model in Europe—walking in runways for designers like Gianni Versace and shooting with photographers like Helmut Newton—she went on to rack up a multitude of acting and hosting credits. Throughout her life and travels, she kept coming back to her love of food. In 2006, she stepped into the role of host on Top Chef, and in her 19 seasons on the competition show, she received four Emmy nominations for Outstanding Host and became an executive producer. But earlier this year, Lakshmi announced her exit from the show and her plan to embark on a new path. Today, she's focusing on her documentary series, Taste the Nation, where she travels to immigrant communities across the United States to learn about their food.
