Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for January 20, 2025 is: inimitable • in-IM-it-uh-bul • adjective Inimitable describes someone or something that is impossible to copy or imitate. // Courtnay delivered the speech in her own inimitable style. See the entry > Examples: “In a nation whose professed ideals include freedom, liberty and independence, every American is charged with an individual self-examination. ... Such a searching self-examination helps us discover our precepts, ethics, ideals, principles, and purpose—a sense of mission. Reverend King discovered his mission as a teenager at Morehouse College. Although the son, grandson and great grandson of ministers, Reverend King initially aspired to be a lawyer. Then he encountered the inimitable Dr. Benjamin Elijah Mays, President of Morehouse College. ... The rest is history.” — David C. Mills, The (Nashville) Tennessee Tribune, 13 Apr. 2023 Did you know? Something that is inimitable is, literally, not able to be imitated. In actual usage the word describes things so uniquely extraordinary as to not be copied or equaled, which is why you often hear it used to praise outstanding talents or performances (or uniquely talented and incomparable individuals). (The less common antonym imitable describes things that are common or ordinary and could easily be replicated.) Inimitable comes, via Middle English, from the Latin adjective inimitabilis. Be careful not to confuse it with inimical or inimicable, two adjectives meaning “hostile” or “harmful”; those words come from a different Latin root.

It's officially fall, y'all, and we're chatting with Ephraim, one of the stars from the new Broadway production of Our Town, to kick off the season. But first: a conversation about NBC's Smash, and its upcoming Broadway adaptation. Gagged! Ephraim reflects on his time dancing on Smash, his entire love of the arts beginning with his talent for dance, as well as his inspirations and influences. We cover all things Our Town - from the glorious cast, co-starring with Zoey Deutch, their trip to Peterborough, New Hampshire, and why the themes of the play are timeless. The twins get the scoop on Ephraim's Hamilton experience from early workshops all the way to Broadway, the NYCC production of Pal Joey, and starring with Ariana Grande in Hairspray Live on NBC. Ephraim was an original Newsie, made his Broadway debut in The Little Mermaid, and was nominated for a Tony AND Grammy for Ain't Too Proud. It wouldn't be DRAMA without covering the culture, including Industry, The Perfect Couple, and the Kendrick Lamar/Drake beef. Jimmy Scott / James Victor Scott (1925-2014)When Jimmy was first heard on records, the audience assumed it was a woman. He was a one of a kind jazz vocalist, a phenomenon who lived a challenging existence, trying to negotiate his intersexuality with the prejudicial attitudes and toxic stigma of the 1940s and 50s. This caused him to adopt an aggressively “male” stance in order to survive and maintain his equilibrium. The 60s and 70s brought some improvement - career wise, but his greatest recognition found him towards the end of his life.  There is, however, an abundant and glorious discography that he left behind for the ages.https://www.washingtonpost.com/entertainment/music/jimmy-scott-hard-luck-singer-with-a-haunting-voice-dies-at-88/2014/06/13/270725b6-48c3-11e3-a196-3544a03c2351_story.htmlhttps://www.discogs.com/artist/129731-Jimmy-Scott

The Inimitable Jeeves by P. G. Wodehouse audiobook. When either Bertie Wooster or his friends found themselves in the soup or in dangerous proximity to the tureen, the instinct of one and all was to turn to Jeeves - Bertie's Man. He understood human nature, especially that of gilded youth. It did not matter if the hope of an ancient house had fallen in love with a waitress, or if Bertie's cousins Claude and Eustace had been playing dido; Jeeves never failed. His was a sound brain. The only thing in which Jeeves failed, that is in his master's eyes, was that he could not always go the whole way with him in the matter of spats, socks and ties, particularly in the Spring - Jeeves was a purist. In this volume are told some of Jeeves more remarkable achievements Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

I read a fiction series one time and the female protagonist was referred to by the author throughout the series as being “inimitable.” I loved the word… after I looked it up to see what it meant. The word “inimitable” means, “impossible to copy; unique.” That is how I think of Laura Preston. Laura is an 18-year post-op who has also worked in several professional roles in the bariatric community. MOST importantly, in terms of bariatrics, Laura has educated, inspired, encouraged, nudged, and walked the walked with thousands of bariatric friends. She has taught me so much, both personally and professionally, about a myriad of topics, and I know I can always count on Laura to be 100% upfront, honest and direct. Canada's Got Talent (CGT): Season Two is off and running! The show's on-air team, judges Howie Mandel, Lilly Singh, Trish Stratus, and Kardinal Offishall, and host Lindsey Ell are back, looking for Canada's best talent. The Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast is grateful to CGT for welcoming back some of my favorite acts who impressed me during the Judges' Auditions. Geneviève Côté is the first act to visit the podcast! Born in Montreal and raised in Laval, Geneviève has been passionate about voices and noises since birth. Inspired by her idols, the little ones Simard, Céline Dion, Dominique Michel, The Looney Tunes, and many others, she went on stage for the first time at the age of four. From a very young age, she was immediately won over and very inspired by actor-comedian and sound designer Michael Winslow (Police Academy). So she begins to imitate every sound out there, from the creaking of a door to the bottle of window cleaner to the sound effects of her favorite Atari video game, Asteroids. Subsequently, it was the group of Quebec comedians Rock et Belles Oreilles and the comedian and singer Weird Al Yankovic who gave him the taste to write his own parodies and make his dream a vocation. While she was a young single mother in her early twenties, it was in 1998 that Geneviève presented herself alone with her baby at the Action Intervention Jeunesse competition at the Salle André-Mathieu in Laval. She lifts the crowd and wins the hearts of judges François Massicotte, Maxim Roy, Jean Aroldi, and Luc De La Rochelière with her imitation and parody of Celine Dion. She, therefore, won the title of Laureate of the first prize in the humor category as well as practically all the awards of the evening. Geneviève Côté was discovered in 2010 on YouTube with her video parodies of Lady Gaga, Lisa Leblanc and Gérald Tremblay. Since then, she has shared the stage with renowned artists such as Mike Ward, Cathy Gauthier, France D'Amour, Marjo, André Sauvé, P-A Méthot, Alex Perron, and many others. She has been seen on stage as part of the Just for Laughs festival on productions by Joël Legendre, such as La Fureur and Le show 100% Inimitable and in the Humor Blind galas at the Saint-Denis Theater on several occasions. In this edition of The Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast, Geneviève Côté spoke about her audition and reaction when Howie Mandel pressed his Golden Buzzer. Canada's Got Talent airs on CityTV!
