Ian offers wonderfully rich prompts and all the pieces must be performed live and they must not exceed 5 minutes. It’s quite amazing how this crystalizes all the bullshit thoughts that normally takes up meters of paper and forces you to get to the point right quick because the clock is literally ticking. Not to mention all the trees we’re saving. The prompt for today’s piece was to tell the story of the most frustrating/maddening time you dealt with a bureaucracy (DMV, Bursar's office, traffic court, etc).  Please go to isitrecessyet.com for the print version of this essay. Enjoy!

Codex is joined by Chicago writer and founder of Write Club Ian Belknap to get to the future of the past of ANCIENT ALIENS. You can find the book online and at a fairly successful convention in Pasadena.   Chariots of the Gods by Erich von Däniken  (Author), Michael Heron (Translator)   THE SEVEN MILLION COPY BESTSELLER The groundbreaking classic that introduced the theory that ancient Earth established contact with aliens.   Immediately recognized as a work of monumental importance, Chariots of the Gods endures as proof that Earth has been visited repeatedly by advanced aliens from other worlds. Here, Erich von Däniken examines ancient ruins, lost cities, spaceports, and a myriad of hard scientific facts that point to extraterrestrial intervention in human history. Most incredible of all, however, is von Däniken's theory that we are the descendants of these galactic pioneers—and he reveals the archeological discoveries that prove it...   The dramatic discoveries and irrefutable evidence: • An alien astronaut preserved in a pyramid • Thousand-year-old spaceflight navigation charts • Computer astronomy from Incan and Egyptian ruins • A map of the land beneath the ice cap of Antarctica • A giant spaceport discovered in the Andes   Includes remarkable photos that document mankind's first contact with aliens at the dawn of civilization.   SHOW NOTES:   Previous Episodes: 56. Cody is joined by writer and teacher Ian Belknap and comedian and activist Kate Milton Mauldin to cut to the quick of current events (and the horror of them all). You can find the essay in question online or in your propaganda sleep pod. The Flight 93 Election September 5, 2016 by Publius Decius Mus (former Bush administration speechwriter and current senior national-security official Michael Anton) 2016 is the Flight 93 election: charge the cockpit or you die. You may die anyway. You—or the leader of your party—may make it into the cockpit and not know how to fly or land the plane. There are no guarantees. Except one: if you don’t try, death is certain. To compound the metaphor: a Hillary Clinton presidency is Russian Roulette with a semi-auto. With Trump, at least you can spin the cylinder and take your chances. Anywhere I Lay My Head - Daniel Kerr-Hobert The original intention of Jughead's Basement was not to conduct interviews of band members, but only to spotlight some of my favorite writers writing about some of my favorite records. But that quickly veered towards having a few interviews since I enjoy having conversations about music and creativity. I now like the balance of both interviews and writers. I had scheduled Tom Wait's Rain Dogs before seeking interviews became a facet. Instead I gathered together the best of my favorite writers, and they shared their stories and thoughts on one of the best singer/songwriters of the last few decades: Tom Waits. I did try to get an interview with him, but with no success. Really it was a pipe dream, a quixotic challenge I gave myself. I do plan on continuing my effort to get an interview with him, which I would instantly sprinkle on top of this podcast. But until then this single podcast represents the purity of my original idea. http://www.johnjugheadpierson.com/ http://www.tuesdaynighthoot.com/

Hello, Athens. This is the WRITE CLUB Athens Podcast. I'm Jami Howard, the Head Bitch In Charge. If you're not familiar with WRITE CLUB, let me break it down for you. WRITE CLUB started in Chicago, the brainchild of our seriously disturbed overlord Ian Belknap. It goes like this: 2 OPPOSING WRITERS. 2 OPPOSING IDEAS. 7 MINUTES APIECE. AUDIENCE PICKS A WINNER. Writers compete for cash going to a charity of their choosing. It was a balmy night on April 2nd when a standing room only crowd welcomed WRITE CLUB to Flicker Bar for our inaugural show. Three seasoned WRITE CLUB Veterans -- Nick Tecosky, Randy Osborne and Topher Payne came to face off against three of Athens' finest ladies, Krista Westervelt, Janet Geddis and yours truly. The battle began when I faced off with WRITE CLUB Atlanta's Viceroy Nick Tecosky. We'll start with Nick's work of fiction chronicling his struggle with being a scientist zombie. His topic: Brains. [Nick's performance] Nothing is more human than desire, President Palin. Hard to follow, I took him on with my topic, Brawn. [Jami's performance] So, who had the better piece? Are you kicking yourself for not coming to see the show now? Fret not! WRITE CLUB Athens will be back soon. Make sure you like us on Facebook and follow us on twitter at WRITECLUBAthens. You can also check out our site at www.writeclubathens.com. If you're interested in participating in an upcoming bout, send us a message at hello@writeclubathens.com. We're looking for a fiery, brave soul to be our regular emcee and host. Thanks to Viceroy Nick Tecosky and Consigliere Myke Johns for coming up and helping get this crazy adventure off to a roaring start. Big thanks to Flicker Bar for taking a chance on something new. Also thanks to Carla Le Fever & The Rays for lending us the sweet, sweet sounds. Look for upcoming podcasts for Janet Geddis vs. Randy Osborne and Krista Westervelt and Topher Payne.
