In Chicago today with children's book author Lisa Maggiore, who has paved a whole new world for herself in the world of publishing - and she's sharing her story today on the podcast! This social worker turned published author of 'Ava The Monster Slayer - Sleepover SuperHeroes', is a story for anyone who wants to overcome their fear of literally anything. Her telling of how Ava and her friends challenge their fears has grown into a series of beloved books for both children and parents alike. In the podcast she discusses new roads to publishing - understanding keywords, knowing where to 'place' your book and those oh so important algorithms - while staying true to the story you believe needs to be told. An author who understands the importance of luck, timing and perseverance also talks about her Live Lit scenes (it's definitely an art form!) and why she believes "scary stories matter."About the Spotlight Conversations podcast:Tune in as I invite friends inside my cozy linoleum free recording studio to talk about all things media - radio, television, music, film, voiceovers, audiobooks, publishing - if guests know media, we're talkin'! Udo Erasmus is the co-founder of Udo's Choice line, which can be found in Whole Foods and other health food stores worldwide. Udo designed the machinery for making oils with health in mind and pioneered flax oil, a billion dollar industry. However, Udo walked a difficult path to become the man he is today. Being a child of war, Udo's life began with intense struggle. As an adult, he got pesticide poisoning in 1980, leaving doctors at a loss regarding treatment. Deciding to take his health into his own hands, Udo began researching, and his discoveries led him to a passion for finding the answers to life's big questions which would hopefully one day bring him and the world peace. Today, Udo is an acclaimed speaker and author of many books, including the best-selling Fats That Heal Fats That Kill, which has sold over 250,000 copies. He teaches at events hosted by Tony Robbins and Deepak Chopra, has keynoted an international brain health conference, and has traveled to over 30 countries to conduct thousands of live presentations, media interviews, and staff trainings impacting more than 25,000,000 lives with his message on oils, health, peace, nature, and human nature. Udo Erasumus is a pioneer in the health and wellness industry. He has sold over 250,000 copies of books, including Fats That Heal Fats That Kill, and sold and distributed 25,000,000 bottles from his Udo's Choice product line in 50+ countries After being poisoned by pesticides in 1980, Udo turned his passion and attention to health. He obsessively studied literature, created a method for making good oils with health in mind, developed the first ever flax seed oil, authored several books on the effects of oils on health: Fats and Oils; Fats That Heal Fats That Kill; Choosing the Right Fats; Omega 3 Cuisine; and enthusiastically educated the public in about 40 countries on the effects of oils on health and disease. In 1992, Udo developed healthy whole foods supplements for dogs, cats, and horses. In 1994, he developed an oil blend that is both better balanced and more effective than flax oil. He followed this with probiotics blends and digestive enzyme blends in 1997, and a year later developed prebiotic fiber and green blends.
Welcome to the Intralingo World Lit Podcast, featuring authors and translators from around the globe.Margaret Davis Ghielmetti is a traveler, writer and live lit storyteller whose memoir is about setting off with her husband as he took on roles managing exclusive hotels around the world. In discovering the world, Margaret discovered herself.I felt a kindred soul in Margaret and all she shares in Brave(ish): A Memoir of a Recovering Perfectionist. We talk about looking outward, to other people and cultures in this world, while also looking inward, at ourselves. We talk about the process of becoming who we truly want to be by recognizing what she calls “The Family Handbook”: the rules and ways of being we inherit.Over the course of her time abroad, from country to country, and returning to the US to look after her aging parents, Margaret was able to take the best parts of those rules and release the rest.“To quote Mary Oliver: ‘What will we do with this one wild precious life?' [...] That's definitely my hope with this book that maybe people will give some thought to. ‘Oh, okay. I see that maybe, maybe I can be brave enough to try to do things differently for a greater expression of selfhood.'”Finding and expressing our selfhood does indeed take bravery, but as Margaret shows us in this memoir, it's not necessarily cape and crown, all-capital BRAVE. Brave(ish) is more than enough.I hope that you too will travel far, and wide, and deep within through this wonderful memoir and all Margaret shares with us in this conversation.Thank you to She Writes Press for the review copy.Bio: Margaret Davis Ghielmetti is a writer, "live lit" storyteller, solo performance artist, and photographer. She and her Swiss husband have lived on four continents and have visited nearly fifty countries. Those journeys inform her rallying cry ("The world is not my enemy!") and her creative work (including winning two StorySLAMs with the storytelling show, The Moth.) Ghielmetti's solo show, “Fierce,” is about re-claiming her creative expression in mid-life . . . and she wrote Brave(ish): A Memoir of a Recovering Perfectionist to inspire readers that it's never too late to learn to live our own lives – if we dare to let go of outdated roles and rules we thought kept us safe. She also hopes to entertain readers with her adventures and mis-adventures abroad, and to share what each country taught her that she never would have learned on her own. Proud to have been included in Newcity's LIT 50 2020 (“Who really books in Chicago,”) Margaret is over the moon to have just had her book launch on October 1 with Chicago indie bookstore www.womenandchildrenfirst.com Please visit www.margaretghielmetti.com to find video/audio of her stories, her Instagram photos, and links to purchase Brave(ish): A Memoir of a Recovering Perfectionist (which may be ordered through any bookseller, Amazon, or Barnes & Noble.) What Margaret loves most is genuine connection with other human beings! She'd love to be in touch and to hear about your journey and how you experience the world. Sincere thanks to Intralingo and Lisa Carter for this wonderful opportunity! **Thank you for listening and please share your own experience of this interview, the topics, and of course this amazing book. Alex Gilbert is a graphic designer, illustrator, and DJ. Originally from Iowa, he's lived in Chicago for over a decade, working and volunteering with such organizations as the Design Museum of Chicago, the Society of Typographic Arts, Spudnik Press Cooperative, and CHIRP Radio. He currently works for a small design studio in Ravenswood and spends his free time drawing, list making, record collecting, and singing karaoke (sometimes competitively). You can listen to his show on CHIRP every Thursday afternoon, 3-6pm, and you can follow his typographically-focused Instagram at @everyday_type. The First Time is CHIRP Radio’s Live Lit and Music series. It pairs a reader’s personal story about a specific "first time" -- a different "first" for each show -- with a song performance. This unique structure allows the story to resonate with audience members as they experience the accompanying song covered by The First Time Four. The band takes special care to perform unexpected song arrangements, so it is hard to tell which the audience enjoys more: the story or the song. The First Time is produced and directed by Julie Mueller with Assistant Producers Bobby Evers, Hadas Werman and Host Jenn Sodini. Podcast recorded and produced by Jenn Rourke. Engineering by Tony Baker.

The First Time is produced and directed by Julie Mueller with Assistant Producer Bobby Evers and Host Jenn Sodini. Podcast recorded and produced by Jenn Rourke. Engineering by Tony Baker.
In the 20-some years since he graduated college, Andrew Huff has been a public relations professional, a journalist, the editor and publisher of Gapers Block (a Chicago-centric online magazine that ran for 13 years), a professional blogger for corporate clients, and host of 20x2 Chicago, a show in which 20 interesting people have two minutes each to answer one question. He's also cohost of Tuesday Funk, a long-running monthly reading series where he's known for his topical haiku. He lives in Chicago's West Ridge neighborhood with his wife and three cats, and is currently trying his hand at writing fiction. The First Time is CHIRP Radio’s Live Lit and Music series. Ian offers wonderfully rich prompts and all the pieces must be performed live and they must not exceed 5 minutes. It’s quite amazing how this crystalizes all the bullshit thoughts that normally takes up meters of paper and forces you to get to the point right quick because the clock is literally ticking. Not to mention all the trees we’re saving. The prompt for today’s piece was to tell the story of the most frustrating/maddening time you dealt with a bureaucracy (DMV, Bursar's office, traffic court, etc). Please go to isitrecessyet.com for the print version of this essay. Enjoy!

Paul Farahvar has been delighting audiences with his self-deprecating dry humor, centered on being an aging single. After training at The Second City and iO in Chicago, Farahvar quickly became a regular at local stand-up clubs, Zanies, Comedy Bar and Laugh Factory. Farahvar's hard work, prior stage life (He was/is also a musician) and ease at connecting with audiences have allowed him to achieve remarkably rapid success by industry standards, including the rare opportunity to host and produce his own monthly (now weekly) called "Drink Date Laugh" about dating and a new comedic game show called "Everyone's a Lawyer" both at the World Famous Laugh Factory. He currently tours regularly with national headliners Demetri Martin, Jen Kirkman, Keith Alberstadt and Chris Franjola when he is not headlining. Farahvar currently performs stand up regularly at Laugh Factory (Chicago, Las Vegas, Hollywood), Zanies (Chicago, Rosemont, and St. Charles), House of Comedy (Phoenix, Minnesota), Skyline Comedy Club (Wisconsin and Tacoma), Comedy Club on State, Comedy Bar (Chicago) and McCurdys (Florida).
