We had a hard time finding movies for each other to see from 2007, as it was a banner year in movie history and we'd already seen a lot. Brad recommended that Jake watch "The Man from Earth," a microbudget film with a unique sci-fi conceit and no special effects at all. Jake gave Brad "The Savages," Tamara Jenkins' second film, starring Laura Linney and Philip Seymour Hoffman as disaffected siblings forced to united to take care of their ailing, estranged father. 2007 is considered by many to be the best year in modern movie history. "There Will Be Blood" and "No Country for Old Men" dominated at the Oscars, while "Zodiac" and "Michael Clayton" established enduring legacies. We had a lot of fun discussing this year. Hosted by Brad Garoon & Jake Ziegler Other movies discussed in this episode: Slums of Beverly Hills (1998), Along Came Polly (2004), Juno (2007), Stardust (2007), Young Adult (2011), Coherence (2013), the Infinite Man (2014), the Man from Earth: Holocene (2017), Freaks (2018), Private Lives (2018), Tully (2018), and Kung Fu Panda 4 (2024)

Gudo en John bezochten onlangs het Leids Filmfestival. Enkele titels krijgen later nog een uitgebreide recensie, maar bij vijf films namen ze direct na het verlaten van de zaal een eerste impressie op. Onder meer de vampieren-mockumentary What We Do in the Shadows, de romkom-met-een-twist The One I Love en de tijdreiskomedie The Infinite Man komen voorbij.
How do you keep contained movies engaging? Contained Thrillers seem to be a genre that never goes out of fashion. But being contained is not just limited to thrillers. It's a way of telling stories on a lower budget, regardless of genre. So - while allegedly easier to make / get made - limiting a story to a single location also limits the tools that maintain an audience's interest. Changing audience or character point of view, intercutting between locations or characters are all much harder (if not impossible) in contained films. So how do good contained films hook their audience and keep them? In unravelling this locked room mystery, Stu & Chas look at three scripts form different genres: LOCKE - a drama; THE ONE I LOVE - a romcom or psychological thriller depending if you're Chas or Stu; and EVERLY - an exploitation action movie. They also discuss films including BURIED, PHONE BOOTH, THE DISAPPEARANCE OF ALICE CREED, CUBE & CUBE 2, INFINITE MAN and BOXING DAY. Many Australian films have significant cultural capital that should also be considered when measuring their level of success. ShutterstockThe Australian Film Commission (AFC) was founded with a budget of A$6.5 million in 1975 with the hope of revitalising the Australian film industry to a point where it could sustain itself without government support. The funding resulted in what is now generally regarded as the “golden age” of Australian cinema in the 1970s and 80s. But even today, most Australian films are still primarily funded through government bodies such as Screen Australia (the successor to the AFC) and through tax offsets. Despite the release of many critically-acclaimed films in 2014 (The Babadook, Charlie’s Country, and The Infinite Man, among others), ticket sales were relatively low. Australians don’t watch enough local films to sustain the industry without substantial government support. And yet the success of Australian films can’t be measured on box office numbers alone. Vincent O’Donnell speaks with David Tiley, editor of the online industry magazine ScreenHub, about financing film production in Australia and measuring success by looking beyond the box office.
