Tim and Armand have a bit of a grab bag episode with this one where they discuss their perfect watches, customization and independent brands, comparing cars to watches, and the proliferation of AI slop. They start with a discussion of the difficulty and weight of custom orders on independent watchmakers and how they deal with it before turning to their opinion on the use of AI in the collecting hobby. Welcome to another episode of Fratello On Air! This week, we discuss sleeper watches from the '90s and '00s. It was an interesting period for timepieces, representing a transition from smaller, often quartz-powered models to mechanical ones. Let's just say that watchmakers were finding their collective feet again with interesting results. Still, there were gems, and we mention a handful. While Balazs was still a wee lad, Mike was checking out watch shops during the '90s and beginning to spend some of his hard-earned wages by the early '00s. One of the sleeper watches mentioned during this episode even found its way into his collection during that period. But there are plenty of other great pieces to consider. Some are already well known and often discussed, while some of our picks barely get a mention. Enjoy the show!HandgelenkskontrolleWe launch our show with a chat about recent events. Mike has returned from a largely stress-free trip to Germany. Of course, England's punishing loss to Argentina in the World Cup semifinal makes an appearance. Ugh. Regarding the big screen, The Odyssey looks like a potential must-see. For the Handgelenkskontrolle, Balazs has joined the fray with his Hamilton Khaki Field Mechanical 38mm. This is the original version that Mike reviewed way back in 2018. Compared to today's model, it uses an ETA 2801-2 with a 50-hour power reserve instead of the current Powermatic 80-derived caliber, meaning that it ticks with a higher frequency.Mike, after wearing his 36mm Hamilton all week, has chosen a relatively similar watch for this episode. The old Seiko 5 7S26-02J0, otherwise known as the SNK805, is out in preparation for an article about it. When new, this piece was available on sites like Amazon for €40–80 and now commands prices of €150–250. While we miss the old days, we can't help but believe that this is still decent value for a relatively bulletproof, if not overly accurate, and timeless watch.Sleeper watches from the '90s and '00sFor our main topic, we return to a dubious period in watchmaking. The '90s and '00s were a great time, but when it came to watches, the results were all over the shop. Bubbly, crude, and forgettable designs were the norm. However, there were certainly standouts. The large brands, like Rolex, Patek, and JLC, largely stuck with tradition and made some beauties, but we're not here to discuss those. We're discussing some of our favorites from other marques, large and small. As mentioned, some of these pieces are popular, so perhaps they don't fall under the term "sleeper." Still, we think they deserve even more love. We start off our discussion with the Porsche Design by IWC ref. 3702. With its flush-mounted pushers, this watch looks as clean and modern today as it did in the '80s and '90s.In fact, this isn't the only mention of IWC during this episode. The entire catalog of IWC releases, including the Porsche Design watches, during this era was incredible. References included the Mark XII, the Ingenieur 3521, and more. These watches were focused, over-engineered, and beautifully built. A special nod goes to the Aquatimer 3536-2000, another watch that looks incredible now. The Ikepod Megapode Chronograph GMT, designed by Marc Newson, is another model that we love. Friend of the show Eric Wind from Wind Vintage has a special love for these! The Hamilton 9379 chronographs represent an odd period for the Swiss-American brand. These Valjoux 7750-equipped models wear beautifully and are delightfully inexpensive. Plus, there are many variants to choose from, which means there's something for everyone. For our next sleeper pick, some of us may remember when Omega attempted to lure younger, budget-conscious buyers with the Dynamic Chronograph. Reference 5240.5000 had strong military vibes with Breguet-esque numerals and massive pump pushers. These pieces used an ETA base with a Dubois Dépraz module. Today, these 38mm watches are still inexpensive but offer a great wearing experience. For an even more pared-back style, the field watch 5200.5000 is also interesting. For our last in-depth sleeper discussion, we mention the Girard-Perregaux Sea Hawk 7100. These lovely divers come in a variety of colors and case materials. Plus, they're still relatively affordable for a piece in decent condition. There's even a GMT version! For our honorable mentions, Balazs discusses the Breitling Aerospace, the Parmigiani Fleurier Toric Memory Time, and the legendary Rolex Oysterquartz 17000.We hope you enjoy today's show. As always, let us know if you have ideas for future episodes!

This week on The Business of Watches, we're in Wetzlar, Germany, home of the legendary camera and lens maker, Leica. Of course, Leica isn't just an optics company. Since 2015, it's been on a new mission to create watches as well, a project initiated by Leica's controlling shareholder, Dr. Andreas Kaufmann, who is not only passionate about cameras and photography, but also timepieces. The person in charge of Leica's nascent watch ambitions is Henrik Ekdahl, a convivial Swede who has returned to Leica after more than two decades away, spent in the executive ranks of automakers, and, most recently, watchmakers such as IWC. Leica's connection to watchmaking is not unwarranted. Ernst Leitz, the company's founder, studied watchmaking in Neuchâtel in the 1860s. It was partly this mechanical know-how that allowed him to begin producing optical instruments, including microscopes and cameras, in Germany and to create the foundation for the company that would become Leica. The latest iteration of Leica watches, launched in 2022, is currently distributed only at Leica stores and online. Less than 5,000 watches are currently produced each year by the brand, but Ekdahl says the watch division has ambitions to grow and to make further use of its manufacturing expertise through new designs and models that draw on Leica's long association with mechanics and watchmaking. Today I welcome back the Chief Design Officer of IWC, Christian Knoop. Though we technically saw one another in Geneva, sadly, we didn't spend much time together aside from quickly saying hello. This is part of why I wanted to invite him back on the show as well as delve into the how's and whys behind their 2026 releases. There were a lot of watches from Schaffhausen presented, so I couldn't wait to speak with Christian. We begin with some conversation about his home, which is where he was when recording, of course we discuss the watches, and we wrap things up with his Summer plans which include a school for Richemont in Milan that I was completely unaware of. One of the most famous names in watch circles, Octavio Garcia is today the Creative Director for Gerald Charles. Previously, the American-born designer was Creative Director for Audemars Piguet during the all-important brand-building period from 2002-2015. Responsible for some of the most ground-breaking and sought after Royal Oak Offshore designs, including the famed series inspired by Formula 1 drivers such as Juan Pablo Montoya and Rubens Barichello as well as expanding the Millenary collection with extraordinary creations such as the Pianoforte, inspired by and paying homage to Quincy Jones. Join us as we take a deep dive and discuss the extraordinary career of the Chicago-born designer. From the earlier days working with Jean-Claude Biver to the most logical step in creating his own brand, Gorilla Watches. Finally to today, and possibly the most natural progression, taking on design responsibilities for the brand created by the Maestro himself, Gérald Charles Genta, the designer who gave the world the Royal Oak for Audemars Piguet and the Nautilus for Patek Philippe as well as the Ingenieur for IWC and countless other enduring designs. Today the "Maestro" case design, penned by the late designer himself in the early 2000's, is like a gift to the talented Octavio Garcia. The unique and charismatic case provides a inviting challenge for creative design. Listen in as we discuss the latest creation unveiled at Watches and Wonders, a world first Perpetual Calendar with asymetrical movement, which perfectly compliments the unique shape of the Maestro case for an ideally balanced design. Listen in as we learn about the intricacies of the design's layout and the truly unique approach to the movement layout itself. This unique episode provides a wonderful window into the creative approach and inspiration that drives Octavio Garcia as he continues to pen the incredible designs that will delight and provide timeless watches for today and generations in the future. On this episode, I sit down with IWC CEO Chris Grainger-Herr and astronaut/geophysicist Drew Feustel at Vast HQ for a conversation about space, time, design, and the future of exploration. We discuss why space is the next frontier for IWC, how time feels different in orbit, the physical and psychological impact of living in space, the “overview effect” astronauts experience when seeing Earth from above, and how science fiction, engineering, and human ambition continue to shape what comes next. 0:00 Intro2:15 How Time Changes in Orbit4:58 Disorientation and Adapting to Space7:12 Waking Up After Returning8:28 The Overview Effect: Seeing Earth Differently12:08 Designing a Watch for Zero Gravity15:22 A New Era for IWC Tool Watches18:27 How Science Fiction Inspires Space Innovation21:00 The Rise of Space Tourism21:44 Closing Remarks

Tim and Armand take a deep dive into IWC, tracing the brand's heritage, identifying the turning point that defined its modern era, and sharing their all-time favorites from across the catalog. They break down the history of the Ingenieur, reflect on the enduring success of the Pilot's Watch line, and examine how the 2017 Da Vinci reboot shifted the conversation around the brand. The episode closes with a look back at some of IWC's most compelling chapters, including the Porsche Design collaborations and the mega complications of the 1990s. One of the OT: fixtures of Watches & Wonders is Andy's annual chat with Chris Grainger, who some claim is the most charming watch brand CEO. The 2026 instalment didn't disappoint — we found 15 minutes to chat in the middle of the incredibly busy booth, and learn about how IWC isn't just looking to the past as it celebrates 90 years of Pilot's Watches, but also the future with innovations like Ceralume and the impressive Venturer Vertical Drive, the brand's first watch made for space. Before that, Felix and Andy gossip about the rumoured Swatch x AP collab, the latest Chris Ward and Hodinkee down under. This week's episode is sponsored by IWC. We filmed this conversation during the Family Business Council Gulf (FBCG) Summit 2025 in Muscat, Oman. But, honestly, with everything tha has been happening in the region since then, the supply chain disruptions, the geopolitical shifts, I'd argue it's even more relevant now than when we sat down. To celebrate the return of The Print Edition we got dressed up and went to Chateau Royale to raise a martini to the new issue. The theme is sports, which evoke leisure, play and childlike pleasure. Many people enjoy the triumphant thrill of victory. Not that we would know anything about that since we're fans of the Minnesota Vikings and Cleveland Browns. Maybe that's why we have an affinity with sad fans—anybody from Buffalo is a brother in or sister in sports suffering.Remember when Vitas Gerulaitis lost to Jimmy Connors sixteen straight matches before finally prevailing. Afterwards he famously said, “Nobody beats Vitas Gerulaitis seventeen times in a row.” That's the spirit we're celebrating here.In the pages Simon Mills reports on England's history of pub games (you can play a sport while holding a pint). Nathan King considers walking to be the first sport. John Brodie examines the fine social nuances of a lifetime playing squash. And Andrew Hyslop shares his wonderful photos of Kentucky horse racing. Many thanks to IWC, J. Mueser, Citadelle Gin and our other advertisers for their support. We try not to take sports too seriously and yet they still manage to break our hearts. After all, losing provides necessary lessons in life. Of course it does, that's how you know the game matters.-David & Michael*You can buy The Print Edition at newsstands or subscribe here. From the shores of Lake Geneva, Andy and Felix give their thoughts on all the highlights of Watches & Wonders 2026. From A. Lange & Söhne to Zenith and everything in between, we chat about why space is cool, and what it feels like to bicep curl 8kg of ethical gold, as well as why the subdial placement on the Santos de Cartier Chronograph is so good. Of course, we also tackle our favourite models, and some we think missed the mark. Patek Philippe stood out, as did Cartier and IWC's out-of-this-world Venturer Vertical Drive. But we also talk about the behind-the-scenes things that make Watches & Wonders great, like the lack of AI slop and secret pizzerias. Born in 1984, Kai Neville came to surfing at age 11 on the Sunshine Coast, where his dad pushed him into his first waves. He loved it, aspired to be a pro, but soon realized he might be better off behind the camera rather than in front of it. He got a job at McDonald's, saved up for a High-8 Sony Handycam, and started creating short surf films, which led to a job making promo DVDs for Australia's Surfing Life magazine, and then a gig working with renowned filmmaker Taylor Steele. Under Steele, Neville got a crash course in surf filmmaking when he worked on 2008's Stranger Than Fiction, for which he was a videographer and editor. Neville's first major surf film, 2010's Modern Collective, landed with a major splash. Not only did it announce a group of surfers that would define the decade to come—Jordy Smith, Dane Reynolds, Dion Agius, Yadin Nicol, Mitch Coleborn, Dusty Payne, and Craig Anderson—but it announced Neville's singular vision as the lenspiece of a new generation. Then came Lost Atlas in 2011, Dear Suburbia in 2012, and Cluster in 2015—all of them oozing with innovative surfing. The Neville thumbprint is distinctive: He has a love of unbridled aerialists. His musical tastes are broad and experimental. His titles are also as eclectic as his eye. For instance, his shorts: "The Quieter You Are, The More You Can Hear." "Welcome Elsewhere." "No One Knows Me Like the Ocean." Along with his surf films, Kai is an accomplished commercial director and photographer, working with brands like Corona, Nike, IWC, Schaffhausen, and Shiseido. He also loves print media, and co-founded What Youth with Travis Ferre. Today, Neville lives with his wife and two boys in the Northern Rivers region of New South Wales, not far from Byron Bay. In this episode of Soundings, Neville talks with Jamie Brisick about chasing creativity, learning his trade under Taylor Steele, the magnetism of misfit surfers, the art of titling and soundtracking, his enduring love for print, and the grind behind some of his most iconic films. This week on The Business of Watches, we go behind the scenes with the man who compiles and crunches the numbers for the Morgan Stanley Swiss Watcher report, the most influential and widely read annual financial league table on the industry. Oliver Müller has been around the sector for some three decades, beginning his career at Omega before executive roles at a series of brands, including Laurent Ferrier, where he served as Chief Executive Officer. He's now a consultant to the industry and has helped shape brand strategy and positioning for the likes of Akrivia and Rexhep Rexhepi, among others. Müller's most high-profile gig these days is compiling the estimates of Swiss brand revenue and volumes for the Morgan Stanley report. It's the top league table for the sector, and he tells us how he calculates and decides on the estimates that get published. Not everyone is a fan. Swatch Group has long criticized the report, now in its 9th edition, and Müller tells us why he believes Swatch and its leadership don't always appreciate the numbers. But first, Hodinkee founder Ben Clymer drops in for his Business of Watches debut. Ben tells us about his recent trip to Geneva and what he's hearing from some of the big brand executives. He also gives us his take on some of the data deep inside the Morgan Stanley report.
