When tropical storm systems barrel across the Atlantic Ocean toward North America, they often take aim at the Lesser Antilles—an arc of small islands that marks the eastern boundary of the Caribbean Sea. In fact, the islands often are the first thing forecasters talk about when a tropical system heads our way.The Lesser Antilles arc from the U.S. Virgin Islands, near Puerto Rico, all the way down to South America. They comprise three separate groups: the Leeward Islands, the Windward Islands, and the Leeward Antilles. The Windwards extend farthest into the Atlantic. They were the first stop for European sailing ships, which followed the prevailing winds to the Americas.Most of the islands are volcanic. They formed as two of the plates that make up Earth's crust plunged below the Caribbean Plate. As the rock descended, it melted. Some of the molten rock then forced its way upward, building the islands.Earthquakes rock some of the islands. And some of the volcanoes that built the islands are still active. A massive eruption that began in 1995, for example, destroyed the capital of the island of Montserrat, and forced most of the population to leave the island.Despite the volcanoes and hurricanes, many of the individual islands are popular tourist sites. Places like the Virgin Islands, Aruba, and Martinique offer tropical beaches, coral reefs, rugged mountains, and other natural attractions—at the edge of the Caribbean Sea.

Résultat : une production d'une limpidité saisissante, qui va propulser le CD sur le devant de la scène.Car Brothers in Arms va devenir le premier album à se vendre à plus d'un million d'exemplaires dans ce format révolutionnaire. Un véritable tournant, alors que la plupart des auditeurs ne possédaient même pas encore de lecteur CD !

1985 haben Mark Knopfler und seine Dire Straits das Album "Brothers In Arms" rausgebracht. Bis heute gilt das Album als eines der erfolgreichsten der Rockgeschichte. Mit Songs wie "Money For Nothing", "Walk Of Life", "Your Latest Trick" und natürlich dem Titelsong "Brothers In Arms" sind auf dem Album auch einige der größten Hits der Dire Straits vertreten. Für die Band rund um Gitarrenlegende Mark Knopfler war es schon das fünfte Studioalbum der Dire Straits. Und mit mehr als 30 Millionen verkauften Einheiten und Diamantauszeichnungen in Deutschland, Großbritannien und den USA zählt "Brothers in Arms" auch zu den kommerziell erfolgreichsten Rockalben der Geschichte. "Brothers In Arms" von den Dire Straits ist aber nicht nur das erfolgreichste Album von Mark Knopfler und Co., für SWR1 Musikredakteur Niels Berkefeld ist es auch das perfekteste Album der Band, mit Ausnahme eines Songs, erklärt er im Podcast. Aber "Brothers In Arms" ist nicht nur vom Songwriting ein absoluter Meilenstein, sondern auch von der Seite der technischen Produktion her. Damals war das Medium CD und digitale Musikproduktion noch sehr neu und die Dire Straits haben auf dieser Platte alle neuen Möglichkeiten der CD-Produktion ausgenutzt und das hatte kaum eine Gruppe und kaum eine Künstlerin oder ein Künstler vorher so gemacht. Einer der bekanntesten Hits des Albums ist natürlich "Money For Nothing" auf dem auch The-Police-Sänger Sting zu hören ist – ein absoluter Zufall. Sting war nämlich eigentlich nur in Montserrat gewesen, um die Dire Straits im Studio zu besuchen und mit ihnen zu Abendessen zu gehen. Die Inspiration zum Song "Money For Nothing" entstand in einem Elektrogeschäft als Mark Knopfler einige Arbeiter vor einer Fernsehwand beobachtet, wie sie sich darüber ärgern, dass sie so schwer schuften müssen und die Rockstars, die auf dem Musiksender MTV zu sehen sind, reich werden und die hübschen Mädchen bekommen – frei übersetzt: Die bekommen Kohle fürs Nichtstun! In den 80er-Jahren kam man nicht an diesem Album vorbei.
