Last week, wildfire smoke blanketed some of North America's biggest cities, sweeping across large swaths of the northeast and beyond. The smoke exposed millions to deadly levels of pollution and made many consider new climate adaptation strategies that may have previously overlooked. So what exactly happened? The team at Heatmap News put together some of the best coverage on an entire week of deadly wildfire smoke, looking at countless angles of a story that dominated headlines for days. This week, we talk to three writers at the heart of Heatmap's wildfire coverage. Guests on the episode include: Robinson Meyer, founding executive editor of Heatmap. He was previously a staff writer at The Atlantic, where he covered climate change, energy, and technology. Emily Pontecorvo, a founding staff writer at Heatmap. Previously she was a staff writer at the nonprofit climate journalism outlet Grist, where she covered all aspects of decarbonization, from clean energy to electrified buildings to carbon dioxide removal. Jeva Lange, a founding staff writer at Heatmap. Her writing has also appeared in The Week, where she formerly served as executive editor and culture critic, as well as in The New York Daily News, Vice, and Gothamist, among others. This chat with Dr. Uma Naidoo covered how the state of your mental health often starts with what you ate for dinner. As she says, “Happy gut, happy mood!” We talked about so much mood-boostin’ stuffs including how the gut and the brain are waaaay more closely linked than you thought. (Heard it here first before it goes mainstream!) Now, this is a chat that will have you turning your ahhhh to hahas and will have you revamping your shopping list. Yes, if you’re on a prescription, it won’t hurt to try out these brain food tips and no, I’m definitely not telling you to swap out your meds. Miss Simi Botic is a barre instructor, a health coach, the author of Letting Go Of Leo and the smarty yoga pants wearing brain behind Unmeasured. That last one is basically a ballet-meets-pilates class… but one that focuses on body positivity and self-compassion. (As in diet culture turns of phrase aren’t allowed and body punishing mentalities will be kicked to the curb!) This chat was all about embracing movement that we love in a self-compassionate way that has nothing to do with earning food or shedding calories. This is the podcast episode where we kinda just said it as it is: that there are ways to enjoy your studio or gym or road time because of the joys that come with it. Joys that have nothing to do with weight or body composition! And you know what, just like healthy eating, your workout doesn’t have to suck! For the story on how Simi went from a compulsive exercise obsessed gal to the one who teaches a warm-hug-of-a-body-positive barre class, press play! Press play to hear: How Barre guru Simi Botic changed her negative relationship with exercise What’s an exercise obsession and how to spot it Why society doesn’t understand unhealthy workout behavior Signs it’s time to tone it down with your workout routine Joys your workout can bring that have nothing to do with body shape or size How diet culture shows up at the studio and at the gym Why Barre might be your movement of choice How Unmeasured is the movement choice that confronts diet culture Links related to this episode: The full show notes with all the deets from this episode! My lady Tricia Huffman a.k.a. The Joyologist a.k.a. affirmation queen a.k.a. the shitty thought police (OK, enough of the a.k.a.s, we get it…) is my latest and greatest guest. The woman is more super than a superfood itself and as such, this lil’ chat was even more invigorating than my post-run heaped-with-greens smoothie. Tricia has a background as a sound engineer, has spent so much of her life on the road and pivoted her whole lifestyle to be one focused on joy, positive affirmations, cultivating career success and happiness, and staunchly askewing the word “should” and all that it represents. Her whole *fig*gin jam is to wake people up to the joys that exist RIGHT NOW in their lives. My friend, don’t let these great days perish like wilted romaine lettuce that you forget at the back of your damn fridge! Listen to find out how to fill your life with joy ASAP. Press play to hear: Why “should” is no longer allowed in our vocabulary How affirmations really work Why it’s time to wake up and actually love the life you live What’s a joyologist and why you need one Why no one can make you feel inferior without your consent Don’t wait until you “have it all,” find joy in your life now! We’ve heard about making our bank accounts work for us, we’ve heard about making our businesses work for us… but what about our home sweet home? Jamie Gold is a home design marvel and the author of a new book: Wellness By Design, A Room-by-Room Guide to Optimizing Your Home for Health, Fitness and Happiness and her whole philosophy is that if you wanna get healthy, start with your space. We covered so much in this episode from revamping the kitchen, organizing the damn stacks of papers (I know you got ‘em) on your counter, embracing hacks that are going to make your home more comfortable and really thinking through how we put together the rooms that now have multiple purposes. (Home-office-turned-gym-turned-reading-corner, I’m looking at you!) I know I learned a thousand things about how to make my space work for me so that I can live my best, healthiest, sanest, life. (Even if it includes getting the dorky cushy floor mat) Of course, we brought some planty magic to turn this housewarming party up to 11. Press play to hear: Why to clear out clutter now Useful hacks to make your home more livable Kitchen mistakes you’re probably making What a functional home looks and feels like Why comfort and joy are essential to your interior How to make your space work as hard as you do Why practicality is just as important as prettiness How your home design can and should make your life easier Links related to this episode: The full show notes with all the deets from this episode! This week on the pod is all about less stuff, more adventure, more freedom and the MOST fun chats with Miranda Anderson. ICYMI, I had a major move last year where Jesse, Tommy and I carted our stuff away from tiny apartments in NYC and into an amazing home in the woods where plants grace my presence the minute I walk out the front door. Behind the scenes on this whole transition was Miranda Anderson, established blogger and author of More Than Enough: How One Family Cultivated A More Abundant Life Through A Year Of Practical Minimalism whose book I listened to on repeat at least three times. In this talk we discussed how your stuff is holding you back from adventure, why practical minimalism is bound to bring fulfillment, why lipstick is freaking awesome and why open mindsets can lead to Puerto Rico or Texas or the woods o’ New York or wherever your heart leads you. I’d say this episode with Miranda left me with more than enough! Press play to hear: Why less stuff inspires more adventure What is practical minimalism and why it might be right for you How to stop chasing materialism Why acquiring enough stuff is simply a decision How to live of life jam-packed of freedom and adventure Happiness = do more of the stuff you like and less of what you don’t like What’s an adventure mindset and why it’ll improve your life Links related to this episode: The full show notes with all the deets from this episode! When it comes to the good ol’ socially distanced plant partying, Tara Kemp is the guest of honor. Tara specializes in something so, so important and so, so valuable that I have the utmost respect for this gal. She helps women struggling with eating disorders recover through a plant-based eating philosophy. Having struggled with an eating disorder herself (which btw, she attributes to crippling anxiety that was left untreated) Tara, who is pursuing her phd in psychosocial health, knows a thing or two about exerting control over food, and the mental health roots in disordered eating. Her story is an empowering one. But the empowerment doesn’t stop with this special woman’s journey… we also chatted about deciding how you want to interact with food, movement, and in deciding which information to live by and which info to take with a grain of celery salt. I might as well call this one the Suit Yourself Episode. Press play to hear: Why the road to recovery looks completely different for everyone Why U.S. treatment centres don’t allow vegan diets What is orthorexia and how does it overlap with disordered eating Learn to interact with food in a way that suits your life Why food fads might not always be for you and when to say no How plant-based eating can add positivity to your meal times Why fear-based eating is causing your extra stress at meal time Why your relationship with yourself is impacting your diet Links related to this episode: The full show notes with all the deets from this episode! My dear friend Robyn Conley Downs is a speaker, educator, entrepreneur, podcaster, and new author of The Feel Good Effect: Reclaim Your Wellness By Creating Small Shifts That Create Big Change. (She was also interviewed in episode 132.) Holding a Master’s degree in education with an emphasis in behavior change, and 4 years of public policy & health change at the doctoral level, her work taps into cutting edge science around psychology, neuroscience, mindfulness, and habits. I mean, it’s all great to educate and inspire based on personal experience, but it’s also great to have solid profesh research to back that jazzzz up. What I heart most about Robyn is not just her willingness to be honest and vulnerable about her shtuff, not just her mission to embody and amplify a gentle approach to wellness, but her super nerdy professional research background which she draws on to share cutting edge science-based, (and life-tested) radically simple solutions for wellness. Her motto is “Less striving, more ease.” And my instruction is to press play for how. Talia Pollock is an author, speaker, storyteller, plant-based chef, TV personality, and health and empowerment coach. She’s the host of the popular Party in My Plants Podcast and the proud founder of Party in My Plants, an internationally celebrated wellness platform that helps real, busy, everyday people skyrocket their energy to boldly show up in their world as their best. Talia’s simple recipes and spunky lifestyle advice have been featured regularly on the Dr. Oz Show, Good Morning America, Forbes, mindbodygreen, Buzzfeed, Bustle, Success Magazine and a 4-page spread in her small childhood town’s newspaper. Her first book, Party In Your Plants, 100+ Plant-Based Recipes and Problem-Solving Strategies to Help You Eat Healthier Without Hating your Life recently hit kitchen counters and nightstands, debuting as a #1 New Release. She lives in New York with her husband and her goldendoodle, both of whom love kale and one of whom eats it off the floor. So, Talia and I have been friends for years. She’s one of those people I instantly clicked with and love being around—probably because she’s so easy to talk to and hilarious. I decided to bring her back on the show because her brand just underwent a big shift. And I thought it would be fun to talk about it so you can hear all about the pivot and the birthing process. In this episode, she shares the origin of her mission to be bold and shine her light (hint: it all started with some serious bullying after her bat mitzvah), the moment she realized she was over talking about plants and knew she needed to shift away from her very well-known platform Party In My Plants, what it looked like for her to truly come to terms with the reality of her rebrand and make the decision to expand her platform, and how she wrestled with it for a year and a half, the birthday present that fully affirmed what her new brand’s core message would be, and how running with it is sooo HER and truly sets her apart, her step-by-step approach to launching her book and then announcing her big rebrand, what the response has been, and what her plans are for the future, her biggest pieces of advice when making a business and brand pivot that is aligned with who you really are, and so much more! My friend, Dr. Lauren Cook used to be best known as “The Sunny Girl,” and let me tell you, I’m probably not the only one who needs a lil’ ray of sunshine in this crazy, confusing and turbulent calendar year. This talented and wise gem of a human is a therapist, a speaker and a published author whose main goal is to help other people live according to their values. (Easy pea-sy, slice of carrot cake right?) Way back in the day when I first met Lauren, I picked her brain and she was generous enough to share her beautiful ideas with me. I had to have her on and share her wisdom with her sweet cat purring in the background. SO, in this chat, we discussed defining personal values, decision making, addressing mental health during the pandemic, finding joy during hard times and looking not just at the shades of blue and red… but finding the purple middle ground! I loved it and I hope you will too! Oh and she’s putting on this wonderful Hearth Conference in Cctober! She compiled a ton of inspirational and healing speakers to share nuggets of wisdom to help you feel cozy and connected on World Mental Health Day which is October 10th and then beyond b/c really every day should be world mental health day nah mean? Dr. Rev. Christopher Carter’s jaw-dropping impressiveness doesn’t stop at his credentials. I felt like I was in school during this interview because Christopher’s views, research, background and way of explaining Black veganism and cruelty-free eating was better than any binge-worthy docuseries I’ve ever come across during this pandemic season! His passion for social justice, racial equality, food, animals and the environment made this such an incredibly energy-packed plant party. I loved his points about how vegan lifestyles that are self-centered don’t really bring the impact that they could have. He schooled me to the apple core. In our chat that I never wanted to end, Christopher explains how we can fill our grocery bags and load up our dinner plates in a way that doesn’t cause harm and is in solidarity with BIPOC people and their history. I mean, if you ever needed a powerful “WHY” to change your dietary lifestyle habits… this is it! Dr. Yami (rhymes with Mommy) has it going on. She’s a pediatrician (who only owns her own practice), an author, a health and wellness coach, a mom, a wife, the brains behind Veggie Fit, a podcast host, a speaker and a kick-ass family chef…and in this chat she really spills the *beans* on some great parenting truths that we all really needed to hear. We chatted about body positivity, not conflating inner health with outer appearances, encouraging kids to feel open minded at dinner time, allowing your youngins to eat intuitively, and backing the heck off to let them do so! Seriously, this episode was great. We tooks myths around children leading a vegan lifestyle and smashed ‘em up like a ripe avocado! And holy guacamole, do I ever feel like we packed this episode with all the good stuff and left no questions unanswered for our planty moms and dads or anyone caring for our inner child out there! This conversation with Talia is a MUST LISTEN! Talia is an author, a speaker and a boldness sparker!!!! We also talk about how she has recently pivoted (after the release of her first book! Party in Your Plants!) When I first met today’s guest who is the wonderful woman the world calls Nicole Jardim (a.k.a. The Period Girl) years and years ago we were in a mess hall (at an adult sleepaway camp called Soul Camp). My friends were crowding her (back when personal space wasn’t a danger) to ask their juicy Q’s about their menstruation and I looked her in the eye with my nuva ring wedged in real deep and said “I don’t need period help, I don’t even get mine!” Well hashtag mega grateful only skims the surface that I got this do-over with her. In this chat, which I sorry not sorry but kinda sorry used as a personal consultation, we covered everything from my messy period moment at my Bat Mitzvah to my confession that I’m on birth control and *gasp* that I’m ready to break up with it. I learned a lot - seriously, I felt like I was a 12-year-old in sex ed class. Really, how was there SO much about my body that I didn’t even know?! Well, Nicole, whose new book, Fix Your Period, came out around when mine did, breaks down some really need-to-know facts, dismantles the crazy wives tales and myths and sets us straight for once and for all that eating our plants helps our hormones, which I then tried and was perfect proof for. Period. Press play to hear: How a plantless diet = hell periods Why the pill is not actually your bestie Why bad nutrition leads to icky period woes How the Period Girl changed her lifestyle Why tracking your period should be on your to-do list The best reads and apps about periods and menstrual cycles What the heck is premenstrual dysphoric syndrome How to learn about how your body actually works so you can stop being scared of it Yes, your window of fertility is waaay smaller than you think And so much more!!! Jenn Racioppi’s health journey starts off really really tough. In her late teens and early 20s, Jennifer got two gynecological cancer diagnoses which led to her having a hysterectomy, being launched into early menopause and being prescribed tons of medications for depression, anxiety and hormone replacements. Don’t worry, the story has a positive ending which basically blew my socks off. This was in the 1990s and when Jennifer ventured to San Diego in search of better healing practices, she came across a woman who did her (shockingly accurate) tarot reading. From there, Jennifer started to dig into astrology, the planets, the moon cycles and all things related and it wound up being the biggest step she’s ever made towards healing. Today, she’s a genius in all these things and even has a book coming out soon. But before we get to all that jazz, here’s your astrology 101 class where I admit that I’m as much as an astrology newbie as anyone ever and Jennifer says hilarious things like “Pluto? Yeah he’s ruthless AF.” Enjoy! Press play to hear: Why astrologists predicted 2020 would be an absolute mess How a journey of cancer, antidepressants and hormone therapy led Jennifer Racioppi to astrology How and why Pluto is a total life ruiner Why setting goals for the new moon cycle is the way to be Your astrology 101 How astrology and understanding your charts paves the way to wellness And more! Sarah Adler really makes healthy eating seem really simple. Which is really good. Because her brand and business is called “Simply Real Health.” Sarah’s a real food lover to the core. And she’s really passionate about helping others love and eat real food with ease. She’s a rockstar nutrition coach, author of two stunningly beautiful cookbooks The Simply Real Health Cookbook and Simply Real Eating Cookbook, a new-ish mom, wife, lululemon ambassador and a really lovely, inspiring real human being whom I’m genuinely honored (and borderline unhealthily obsessed) with calling a friend. This is her second episode on my podcast, her first one, episode #41 is every bit as delicious, and I went into this interview if you even want to call it that with zero notes which is unprecedented, but I knew we’d naturally hit the goods because nothing that comes out of this woman’s mouth is NOT GOOD. And I was right. This is one of the most wonderful chats I’ve yet to publish. Oh and I can’t remember if I say this in the chat or not, but seeing photos of her kitchen inspired me to put a pot filler in mine. Talk about being the ultimate influencer. She may or may not have also influenced me to want to have a baby soon. Or at least start to think about eating more like one… Links related to this episode: The full show notes with all the deets from this episode! BUY MY BOOK, PARTY IN YOUR PLANTS! Today marks three years since my mother in law passed away, and in her loving memory I’m re-airing this touching tale of how my heart-filled engagement overlapped with her heartbreaking death and how that serves as an ongoing reminder to live the crap out of my days and share my non-crap food even more. It’s also updated with two major life-impacting lessons I’ve carried with me daily since experiencing Nancy’s death 3 years ago; to-do’s that I hope you’ll be inspired to do, too. This episode gives us to a reason to celebrate with guest, Talia Pollock, a well-known author of “Party in Your Plants - 100+ Plant-Based Recipes and Problem Solving Strategies to Help You Eat Healthier Without Hating Your Life." She's also a certified plant-based chef, a writer, motivational speaker, TV personality and dynamic health and empowerment coach. She started her career as a comedian and now keeps us laughing and informed with her internationally celebrated Party in My Plants brand. Though full of positive energy, on this episode Talia talks about how she spent years silently struggling with unknown health issues, which led to depression and low confidence. She TRULY took a journey figuring out how to navigate her own health without being a burden to herself or others. She shares her story and then how she went from health nut hermit to hosting a kombucha fest at a Steeler’s Tailgate. She speaks about being bold and having courage to make changes in our lives to better our health and our selves. She’s incredibly authentic, enlightening and so very funny…So be sure to listen to the end where we play, “The Grateful Game.” We have a heart-to-heart about how our hardships have brought goodness into our lives. We also laugh about Legos and the love of trees. Who said health and comedy don’t mix? In this episode, I catch up with my old friend Talia Pollock about how she created her own solution to a problem that she was having and showed the world how health didn’t have to feel so stuck up! Talia’s health journey started with finding out she was lactose intolerant and evolved into her entrepreneurial journey. Her book, Party in Your Plants, showcases over 100 plant-based recipes but also helps you learn to eat healthier without absolutely hating it. Her brand is continuing to transform, so click play to learn more! This is only the third time in Party In My Plants history when I’ve publicly had a threesome - I interviewed TWO guests at the same time, you silly goose! I had an incredible hour talking with Robby and Cyrus which you will hear about in un memento. And for a conversation focused on diabetes, which I initially expected to be boring AF, I surprisingly and genuinely laughed a lot and have smiled thinking about since. Something that I found really cool about both Robby and Cyrus is that they were diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes and, parallel to my story, they used that low point in their life to get really curious, learn more and dedicate much or their time to healing their bodies and then helping others. Their journeys fascinated me. Not only did we get into the sciency, brainiac stuff (how many of us can ACTUALLY define insulin and explain the differences between Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes?) but we also got some great plant-y eating recommendations and fun backstories on both gentlemen. But the best take-home ever: you CAN and SHOULD, even and maybe especially if diabetic or insulin resistant, eat fruit, carbs and tons and tons of mangos. Orange you excited to hear? (sorry, hard to resist.) Press play to hear: How a diabetes diagnosis can merely be just an inconvenience Yes, you can eat fruit with diabetes, here’s how How two diabetics are defining the age-old advice Why insulin ain't your enemy Exercise is a diabetic’s BFF, here’s why Intermittent fasting IS all it’s cracked up to be Why the American diet leads to American medical issues A much needed reminder, for myself too, that like actually PLANTS (*produce*) are where it’s at And lots more! My new friend Susie Moore is an incredibly successful and genuinely glass-half-full kinda beautifully accented gal. Our chat was a necessary breath of fresh air and was chock-full of the kind of life-changing wisdom that I think PIMP listeners crave like cookies. Soul cookies. Easy to digest. Susie’s an kickass coach, writer, TV personality, and author (her latest book is called Stop Checking Your Likes: Shake Off The Need For Approval And Live An Incredible Life). As we mentioned in this talk, she has done ALLLLLL of this and more without a single college degree. That, my friend, goes to show that lack of official credentials is way less harmful than lack of confidence and self-limiting beliefs. Listen to this episode and you’ll be motivated to quit checking yo’ damn likes and use that energy to instead challenge the negative thoughts swirling around in yo’ damn brain! Here’s what my podcast assistant Sinead says is one of my strongest interviews yet. Press play to hear: Why it’s time to change your beliefs around the things blocking you in life The magic of the confidence-competence loop Why success and failure are the same things just on different points on the timeline Your life history doesn’t have to be in the driver seat of your life today How to stop checking your likes and caring about what other people think Stop taking yourself seriously: we’re all gonna die one day! My guest today is one of my most cherished friends, Ms. Brittany Piper. You might remember her from episode 118 which I called “A LESSON IN SAYING THANKSFORGIVING US PAIN TO TURN INTO PURPOSE (AND TO TUNE US INTO WELLNESS)” -- it dropped on Thanksgiving, hence that brilliance I came up with right there. Brittany is a powerhouse speaker, an international activist, trauma specialist and a healing + wellness coach. She’s fits the bill of the most “practice what she preaches” er as she’s herself has overcome not just one, but many of the most horrific events any of us could imagine: sexual assault, eating disorders, the death of her brother and alcoholism and uses her experience to help others harness their hardships and grow through whatever trauma we go through so we can do amazing things. I’m going to cry just reading this intro. Britt and I chatted a few weeks ago as she ate a humongous granola bowl, sitting in her closet at 36 weeks preggo! The day this airs is actually four days past her baby boy’s due date. I planned this to be kinda a lighthearted chit chat about life being pregnant in a pandemic la la la but it quickly became a profoundly moving exploration into how to be strong and tender at the same time. I quickly shifted focus to grilling her on ways she suggested we work through trauma and thrive. Umm, hello timeliness. Thank you so much for lending me and my show your ears today and I hope this chat hits you right where you need it. As I love to say, the world is better when we’re our best, and really, we can’t care for others if we’re not caring for ourselves. My guest today is Georgie Morley, a coffee-loving creative and photographer, the host of the Chasing Joy Podcast, and the caring human behind her platform that inspires joy and personal growth through compassion and self-discovery. She loves to share tips, tools and lessons learned all inspired by her own path towards personal growth, wellness, and spirituality. And coffee. Georgie to coffee is me to plants. She lives in my favorite place on earth, Nantucket, the 14 x 5 miles long island, exactly 30 miles out to sea off the coast of Cape Cod. You know when you’re doing a meditation and you’re told to close your eyes and envision your happy place? Mine has been Nantucket since I started going there in the womb. I love that place so much it genuinely makes me cry thinking about, which I do on a honest to god daily basis. So Georgie’s there, and I feel like her Nantucket-essence just radiates out for us all to catch glorious whifs of. We’ve known one another through the interwebs for half a decade but haven’t really deeply connected until I was on her podcast last month and now when we did this flip the mic a doodle do in one of my new fun types of episodes called LAUGH WITH YOUR MOUTH FULL. At the time of this recording I was eating some of my matcha mint chocolate chip date balls from page 275 of my BOOK WHICH IS OUT NOW FOR YOU TO BUY, and Georgie was of course, sipping on coffee which she told me after she drank black and used a v60 or chemex to make it? No clue what that means since I don’t drink coffee even though I was a barista for a whole summer ON NANTUCKET but if you need info on college look up @georgiemorley because she is the coffee pro. Press play to hear: How to lean in to what’s easy for you How to embrace your talents instead of running from success Lessons from the pandemic How to stop cock-blocking yourself in business and creative goals Why self discovery will make your life so much easier Notes on crying in the car Self care tools and advice for depression sufferers The deal on coffee, cafe culture and why both are so great Why we should try to achieve goals without even telling anyone! Talia Pollock is on the show this week! Talia Pollock is the author of Party In Your Plants, speaker, storyteller, plant-based chef, TV personality, and health and empowerment coach. I was a guest on Talia’s podcast, Party in My Plants, last year. She has a fantastic sense of humor, and we hit off well. Talia has a unique and refreshing approach when it comes to being healthy. Today, Talia offers ways to take the hell out of being healthy. In Talia’s words, the world doesn’t need more recipes. Instead, she believes we need more courage, confidence, and boldness to take action and make the right choices for our health. In this episode you’ll hear: Healthy eating, yeah, it kind of sucks. Talia offers some ways to take the hell out of being healthy. (7:36) Why energy is the main benefit of eating plants. (15:48) How Talia’s work is intended to help, people thrive outside the kitchen. (17:57) Confidence is the missing piece for executing our healthy lifestyle. (23:49) What surprises Talia the most about the women she works when she takes them through this journey. My friend Jenny Sansouci has been in this wellness game for a loooooong time. I pat myself on the back for being going planty before it was really cool in 2008, but Jenny started her own platform way back in 2006. Not that it’s a comparison game. We know Jenny now as the brains and passion behind Healthy Crush, and now the author of her new spectacular book, The Rebel’s Apothecary: A Practical Guide To The Healing Magic of Cannabis, CBD and Mushrooms, and as an amazing messenger on how to support the health of those dealing with cancer based on her experience of being right there with her father, CBD, shrooms and cannabis, research and hope in tow, as he’s battled pancreatic cancer. Jenny wasn’t didn’t always have a crush on health. What blew my mind is how Jenny overcame issues with alcohol, party drugs and a dusk-til-dawn party lifestyle. Way back when, she was the first person to dismiss meditation and she used to show up at work hungover. (Which sounds like my own personal nightmare.) Through hard work, an obsession with information and perseverance, she changed her lifestyle and became the well-known wellness gal she is today. Unlike me, Jenny is a research fanatic and I applaud her dedication to learning directly from scientists, doctors, mycologists, herbalists, and so many incredible experts in the cannabis and mushroom fields and then sharing it all with stories, so we less research-inclined can eat it all up! Well, I had the poop doctor back on the show! My earlier chat with Dr. B. was such a breakout HIT that it’s about time I bring him back again. And this round two was as good - if not better - than last time. You let me know. We started off this talk by clarifying right off the bat that Dr. B is more of a tummy doctor than a butt doctor. From there, we got straight to his main point: fiber is SEXY ok? (I originally disagreed but he convinced me in the end.) Dr. B’s new book, Fiber Fueled (which is a cousin to my book as we share the same publisher and hit bookstores within 3 weeks of each other!) will change your life and educate you on how the gut actually works. During these times when the coronavirus has the world shut down, it’s important to know that most of your immune system lives in the gut. In other words, hurt the gut, hurt your immunity! Dr. B.’s goal is to get his information out there to convert the processed food eaters to see the value of plants and start taking better care of their gut health. I think you’ll be convinced. And highly entertained. And maybe blushing if poop is not a topic you usually engage in discussion around. Press play to hear: Why fiber IS so sexy Why your need to eat as many different plants as possible Diversity, diversity, diversity! For health, health, health! If you’re a follower of my work (and self) and a listener of this here show, then you likely know I’ve just made a comeback after spending months in a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad slump. I was depressed, overwhelmed and swimming (like doggy paddle treading) in anxiety that, of course, as our stress does - it turned physical. Tapping, what we’re talking about today, was pivotal in me pivoting out of my overwhelm ocean, my pity pool, my hot mess hot tub…. Here’s my interview with Jessica Ortner, skeptic-turned tapping expert, bestselling author of The Tapping Solution for Weight Loss and Body Confidence, and co-creator of the massively popular and internationally celebrated Tapping Solution. It’s intentionally my first interview back in MONTHS and I hope my passion for tapping, the very thing that helped me lure myself out of the low-vibe lazy river, is palpable. Here in this chat, Jessica spills how tapping can help us with basically everything keeping us down, how tapping impacted her personally, and exactly how you, yes you, can do it right now...without your houseplants thinking you’re weird. And by right now I mean in like 50 minutes because at the end of this episode Jessica and I do a tapping meditation together which you and your clean hands can do along with us to feel better now. In this COVID crisis, anxiety, depression and new emotions they probably need to invent words for are flying off the charts so this episode is my gift to you so you can experience just a little more ease in your everyday life. Press play to hear: What the heck is tapping and why did it help me so much? Why tapping is the practice to use during corona times Tapping vs. meditation: What’s the difference? How tapping can help you become motivated, reduce stress, settle anxiety, cure insomnia, lose weight, love yourself and even see financial success... From the hilarious writer and plant-based chef behind Party in My Plants, learn to take the hell out of healthy eating. You’ve bookmarked more recipes than you could make in a lifetime. Your shelves are overflowing with cookbooks. Your pantry has some superfoods, but they’ve become super stale and super dusty. In short, you still can't get yourself to eat right on a regular basis. And you’re wondering, “What am I doing wrong?” Health and empowerment coach Talia Pollock is here to share some good news: nothing is wrong with you. You don't have a willpower deficiency. You won't benefit from another minute on Pinterest. And you don’t really need a new blender. Healthy eating doesn’t require suffering. Or a meal plan. Or ashwaganda (unless you’re into that).
Wowie kazowie my first book, “Party in Your Plants” is outie! And is sitting pretty as a #1 Bestselling New Release for over 2 weeks straight now on Amazon. Today I’m gonna introduce you to it. Literally, by reading the introduction… and other fun parts that illustrate 9 ways my book, “Party in Your Plants” will empower you to eat more plants! Because, while yes, my book is technically a cookbook, it’s really an empowerment book to empower people to eat more plants. As a review so eloquently says: “This book is a "food" book that isn't actually about the food. And I mean that in the best way possible. Party In Your Plants is really about the PARTY part - how to make your life feel like one that's worth celebrating every single day. Talia makes the (great and accurate) argument that in order to make your life one that's worthy of a celebration, you've got to TREAT it like it is. I really appreciate that she doesn't preach Healthy Living for Healthy Living's sake - she really makes it clear that it's a tool in your toolkit to help free up mental and emotional space for you to live BIG and BOLD outside the kitchen.” Fun! Hope you enjoy! And you can purchase my debut book, “Party in Your Plants” here. Links related to this episode: The full show notes with all the deets from this episode! I’m excited to present a new monthly installment of LAUGH WITH YOUR MOUTH FULL! Lighthearted real life chit chats with smart and articulate people I love while we eat healthy planty foods we love. This episode explores how three of my dearest friends and I are doing our best to healthfully navigate this scary season of Coronavirus quaranatine. At the time of this recording, my mouth was full of snap peas. Katie Dalebout the host of Let it Out with Katie Dalebout, the author of Let it Out: A Journey Through Journaling and the creator of the Let It Outttt platform and self-growth KITS. You might’ve heard her before in episode 22 of this PIMP podcast. She’s quarantined in sunny LA. Her mouth was full of banana boats. Katie Horwitch is a writer, speaker and founder of the Women Against Negative Talk platform & podcast. She’s also a spin instructor extraordinaire and her audio workouts on Aaptiv are phenomenal. You heard her before in episode 122 and she’s quarantined in my beloved NYC. Her mouth was full of pickles! Phoebe Lapine is a cookbook author, chef, and food blogger at FeedMePhoebe.com. She’s written two books, In the Small Kitchen and The Wellness Project, and she hosts the SIBO Made Simple Podcast (+ is writing a third book by the same name)! Her interviewS on this podcast were #37 and #82 and she is quarantined on beautiful Martha’s Vineyard. Her mouth was full of a kosher-for-Passover chocolate chip cookie that she ate before the recording. Press play to hear: Introverts vs. extroverts vs. ambiverts (and how to know the difference) The least horrible parts of being quarantine right now Connection as self care How we’re loosely managing time these days (Horwitch’s protocol chunking schedule is something to hear!) How we’re cooking/eating/plant-partying right now! This quarantine being a masterclass for what we really most need to learn and heal about ourselves that we’ve been procrastinating on… How cooking your friend’s recipes (AHEM: MINE!) can help you feel closer to them right now The idea of mindful take out & delivery and how quarantine can help us really learn to feed ourselves. How pre-quarantine traveling helped Dalebout learn to nourish again Horwitch’s beautiful metaphor about letting our paint dry as we *wait* to come out of this My best friend’s advice and comfort about my book launch. And why shiny ain’t always smarty. Horwitch’s interesting perspective on the fitness IG live explosion and how “Fitness advice is life advice.” And lots more! So you’ll hear in a lot of upcoming podcast episodes in which I’m the guest on other peoples’ shows talking about my book, Party in Your Plants, about the coconut smoothie that set me on my plant-party path, and how since that was in 2008 before instagram, youtube, and blogging was really a thing, I learned about eating plants through sitting in Barnes and Noble with a yellow legal pad. One of my first ever books at my self-study vegan 101 Barnes and Noble school was Colleen Patrick-Goudreau’s. Colleen is an OG in the vegan world. Her voice is one I know well and her books (there are seven of them. One for each dwarf!) have graced my shelves for ten years or so. In this chat we talked about veganism, plant-based eating, not being judgemental, and… Burger King. Colleen gave some really down-to-earth tips on how to survive holidays as a plant eater, as well as tips on how to talk to loved ones and partners about your decision not to eat animal products. What I especially loved about our chat was that in Colleen’s view, the “V” in vegan really stands for VALUES! I was admittedly a little scared before our interview that it would stand for VERY DOGMATIC. As Colleen says (and you’ll have to give it a listen…) it’s better to characterize being vegan as a means to an end not an end in itself. It’s not the goal. The goal is compassion and wellness... being vegan is the mode to getting there. Ahhhhh, sweet. Also sweet is hearing her talk about her relationship with her book’s cover cow (or steer!) at the very end of our chat. Press play to hear stuff like: Tips for how to survive the holidays as a vegan How to talk to family and loved ones about your vegan choices Stop being critical of other people’s labels How to reflect your values in what you put on your dinner plate Achieve compassion and wellness through vegan eating Ways to talk to your partner about diet How to allow yourself room for error in order to take action! Friend, if you had asked me about the state of my podcast weeks ago like my podcast assistant did over email, my husband did in long car rides, diehard listeners did on IG, and my best friends did over ABCV’s butter beans that taste like bacon (Neal Harden, executive chef of ABCV and friend who wrote a big blurb for my book -- you are a plant genius!), I would’ve told you, like I told them, straight faced and convincing as hell: I can’t do it anymore. I’m done. It’s over. I had a good argument, too. Though I can’t even remember what it is anymore. Because it was depression talking, not Talia. This first episode since an abrupt hiatus in January tells that story. I share the story of forgetting and ignoring my own voice, but having an inner truth so relentless & body signals so persistent, like that fire alarm in Phoebe’s apartment that WOULD NOT BE QUIET even when she disconnected, disabled, smashed, trashed and screamed at it, that I had to listen again. I hope it inspires you to keep listening to and honoring your fire alarms. Links related to this episode: The full show notes with all the deets from this episode! If Caroline Dooner’s name rings a bell, it’s probably because you’re heard of her book, or her massive movement called the “The F*ck It Diet.” Yes, she may have given me anxiety as I listened to her long and yo-yoing journey with dieting, but the way she now shits on the inherent flaws of dieting and diet culture (which she backs with so much sound science thank you very very much Caroline) is SO relatable to SO many people. As a fellow past-life comedian, Caroline’s humor, coupled with her compassion, (with again, lots of research) allows her to fearlessly call out all the BS and misinformation that makes us make eating so hard for ourselves, so be prepared to wage no more wars with your grub after you listen. Matcha latte cheers to making “the f*ck it diet” the last diet you ever try! Yay! Press Play to hear: How Caroline Dooner, author of “The F*ck It Diet.”, fixed her tainted relationship with food Your hunger is there for a reason and why you need to stop ignoring it Why diets make peeps even more food obsessed The biggest sign that you’re underfeeding yourself No, disordered eaters are NOT only those who are incredibly thin… and other myths busted! You know how health is wealth? Well, as my phenomenal functional medicine practitioner friend Dr. Will Cole says in this chat: you don’t have to be wealthy to be healthy. Dr. Cole, or Will, is doc who relies little on prescriptions on mucho on natural fixes. He’s obsessed with finding the roots of health problems and honestly, in this chat I became obsessed with finding out his answers to every single thing that came to my mind. It turns out, this brilliant man is not only a healer, but also a quote generation machine, and he was dropping some serious poetic responses. Something he said that really stuck with me was: “Just because it’s common, doesn’t mean it’s normal.” Out of context, that could apply to basically anything (headphones getting tangled the minute they enter a purse, my dog humping his bed when he’s mad at us, me crying when I watch Monica and Chandler get engaged even though I’ve seen that episode upwards of 39 times…) but in the context of our conversation, he was saying that so many folks struggle with so many “common” health issues today, but that shouldn’t mean that accept them as “normal” and live a life less good. This chat is also just what the doctor ordered because finally, FINALLY, hooha, I had an expert on the show who really broke down inflammation. You know, that word you keep hearing but don’t really, truly, honestly, understand? Well with Will, whose new book The Inflammation Spectrum is about to be your new go-to health manual, we talk about what inflammation is, what causes it, how it wrecks havoc in your body, and how to stop it! Press play to hear: What’s a functional health practitioner and why might you need one? What causes inflammation? Why you might want to start an elimination diet What inflammation actually is and why too much can be bad news Why what you eat could be causing your depression and anxiety It’s not a medication deficiency: how what you do and don’t put in your body causes your symptoms Why autoimmune conditions and inflammation often go hand in hand How many years of lifestyle habits it takes before an illness manifests You don’t have to be wealthy to be healthy: FREE tips to get you feeling better Common foods that could cause inflammation Why stress is just junk food for the soul and is probably making you sick Links related to this episode: The full show notes with all the deets from this episode!
