Back to the Future Part III had a different job to do. Part II had ended on a cliffhanger and sent everybody out of the theater with their heads spinning, but the third film had to bring everything back down to earth, or maybe more accurately, out to the Old West. It was ending a story people had gotten very attached to and it had to do that without losing the sense of fun and invention that made the series feel special in the first place. We didn't go to the future with flying cars and flat screens. This time it was dust, horses, locomotives, and a version of the past that felt just as exciting. On this episode of the Retroist Podcast, I start with a memory from my time working at the mall. I spent a lot of lunched at the bookstore, where I kept running into a fan of the film who loved talking about where the series could go next. He was especially taken with the train at the end. He had no shortage of ideas about the sequels that could have followed if that machine had carried Doc and his family into one more adventure after another. These conversation say a lot about how Part III left people feeling. Even though it was the end, it still made us want to keep the story going. From there I get into the movie itself, its release, and why it worked for people then and still holds up now. Part III does not try to top Part II by getting more tangled with time travel nonsense. Instead, it gets simpler, warmer, and more character driven. It gives Marty a chance to face something in himself, and it gives Doc a story that is not just about invention or danger, but about love, risk, and finally building a life outside his invention. It also has a very different look, taking Hill Valley and peeling it back into something rougher and more mythic. I also talk about the cast, the making of the film, the music, and the way Part III completes the trilogy with a lot more confidence than it sometimes gets credit for. The first movie may be the cleanest and Part II may be the complex, but Part III has its own place because it knows how to end things well. It turns the series into something bigger than a time travel gimmick. By the end, it feels like a story about growing up, letting go, and deciding that the future is not something you chase, but something you make.
Bob Gale joins Byte for a look into two of the most inventive storytelling challenges in the Back to the Future trilogy: revisiting 1955 with two Martys running around at once, and crafting the Old West setting that defines Back to the Future Part III.

We finish out our Back to the Futures month with Back to the Future Part III, a welcome return to form for the franchise. Primarily a Western, the 1885 setting allows the film to calm down from the frenetic Part II. With the same cast and crew, with the addition of the amazing Mary Steenburgen, Back to the Future Part III sticks the landing.

To wrap up our trip through the Back to the Future trilogy, we brought back our beloved frequent guests, Benny Elledge & Renegade. We always have a great time with these fellas and hope you enjoy hearing us discuss Back to the Future Part III.
We've released well over 300 episodes over the last 6+ years and this is the very first time that we've tried to do an episode on a film that we've already recorded an episode on. Thankfully we had Nate Stone on back in July of 2020 and minutes before we were about to record the other day, Nate informed us that we had already recorded an episode on Back to the Future for it's 35th anniversary 5 years ago. So...we decided to record how we were feeling about the mishap and then re-releasing what we said about the film 5 years ago. We will be covering Back to the Future Part II next week and Back to the Future Part III the week after that, and it looks like we haven't recorded those yet! Enjoy the re-released episode...
Saddle up and join us for a wild ride through Hill Valley, 1885, as the siblings break down the final chapter of the BTTF trilogy with BACK TO THE FUTURE PART III! To all the fans, happy 35 years! This week, we're chasing Jack The Ripper through time from 19th century London to 1970s San Francisco and falling in love along the way as SepTIMEber continues with one of the goofier movies we've ever watched for the show. It's 1979's Time After Time, written and directed by Nicholas Meyer and starring Malcolm McDowell, David Warner and Mary Steenburgen. It's a film J Mo torrented more than 15 years ago while searching for an MP3 of the Cyndi Lauper song of the same, it's a tenuous application of our podcast criteria but we'll allow it when the film is this fun. The debut picture from a man who would go on to direct Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan -- with writing and directing credits on several other notable Trek films as well -- it is a great showcase for the energy he can bring to a movie, and the film's clumsier moments lend it a boyish charm befitting of McDowell's portrayal H.G. Wells. It's not a great movie but there's something about it that is worth tracking down. If you'd like to watch the movie before listening along this week, you may have a difficult time doing so because Time After Time is not available anywhere on streaming, but is currently rentable on YouTube at the time of publication. Other works discussed on this episode include The Leftovers, Devs, Lost, Evil, The Fall Guy, Speak No Evil, The Fabelmans, Licorice Pizza, Jurassic Park III, Step-Brothers, Will & Harper, Talladega Nights, Anchorman, Backspot, Timeline, The Time Machine, A Clockwork Orange, Star Trek Generations, Wayne's World, Primer, Zodiac, Back to the Future Part III, Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, Bones and In Time. We'll be back next week to wrap up SepTIMEber, as Hayley's got the keys to the vault yet again and has put forth the Rachel McAdams 2012 time-travel romance About Time as our monthly consideration for induction into the pod-canon. Similar to the last few movies we've covered, About Time is unfortunately not available to stream at the moment in Canada, though maybe in time that will change. Once again it is rentable on YouTube and via the Cineplex app. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!

Not many actors can be nice, warm, and funny at the same time. Mary Steenburgen has basically made a career out of it. The Arkansas-born actress made her film debut in the late seventies on a film called Goin' South. For that performance, Steenburgen earned a Golden Globe nomination, and she's only gotten better since. She has some great performances under her belt. She played Will Ferrell's mom in Step Brothers. She played Will Ferrell's step-mom in Elf. Melvin and Howard. Back to the Future Part III. 30 Rock. Oh, and she's even played herself on the sitcom Curb Your Enthusiasm. So, it's safe to say that Mary Steenburgen is a legend. And in her latest movie, she's teaming up with three other legends: Candice Bergen, Jane Fonda, and Diane Keaton. This week on Bullseye, Mary Steenburgen stops by to talk about her role in Book Club: The Next Chapter. She gets into her friendship with Jane Fonda. Plus, she reminisces on the first time she met her husband, Ted Danson.

We wrap up our return to the Back to the Future trilogy with Robert Zemeckis' finale from 1990: BACK TO THE FUTURE PART III. What do we think of the western direction they took? Does it hold up better than the second film? And why do all of their relatives look exactly the same? Tune in!

BACK TO THE FUTURE PART III picks up immediately after the cliff-hanger ending of the second movie, with Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) receiving a letter from a stranded but happy Doc Brown (Christopher Lloyd), after a freak burst of lightning struck the DeLorean. Discovering that Doc was killed a week after writing the letter, Marty travels back to The Old West in 1885 to rescue his eccentric friend... For such a beloved franchise, the BACK TO THE FUTURE series has always carried some ideas that are a little strange; a teenager that's best friends with a reclusive 60-something year old local oddball seems a slightly odd choice of protagonist in the cold light of day as does Marty's plan in the original movie to pretend to try to rape his own mother in order to help George win Lorraine's affection whilst the existential dread of Marty coming back to a new house and truck and meeting fresh versions of his family, inferring a life that he didn't live all the while carrying memories of a life that no longer exists is never directly addressed to my knowledge. After the high concept, great execution smash hit success of the first movie and the haywire craziness of PART II, the third film in the BTTF franchise suffers by feeling a little bit too small in comparison. Reversing the chemistry of the two leads, where Doc finds himself acting on his emotions when falling in love with Clara (Mary Steenburgen) whilst Marty has to stay calm and rational, is a charming way to round out the series and show how our characters have grown but overall the Old West setting is a bit uninteresting and a series known for zest and invention kind of fizzles out a little. Don't expect all the Dads to agree on that take, or do, it's not up to me but do expect some discussion of the persistent and recurring incest themes, hot and confusing though they are.
