Ana and Dan pause to commune with the horses just as dawn breaks. How is 2007's "Michael Clayton" related to science fiction? 1) Only alien technology explains how someone with Clooney's looks and charm is the office henchman and not running the place 2) It's the creation of Andor showrunner Tony Gilroy. This is good enough. Highly quotable, gorgeous, perhaps (in Ana's opinion) a perfect film in the vein of Alien: not a single shot or line of dialogue wasted, everyone in the movie performing at the same high level, endlessly re-watchable, satisfying without being trite. John and Craig welcome writer and showrunner Tony Gilroy (Andor, Michael Clayton) for an in-depth look at crafting a second season of a hit TV show. They look at ways to find your season's structure, setting your production up for success, controlling the energy your audience spends on information, and how to wrap up your story before the show eats you alive. They also answer listener questions on what to do when a movie that's similar to yours is wildly successful, and whether being a movie critic could hurt your writing career. In our bonus segment for premium members, Tony sticks around to ponder which words we wish existed in English, and how we'd use them in our scripts. This week, every good team needs a greaseman, and boy do we have one, as we're putting a team together to knock down three Vegas casinos in one night, in a movie that is just as clever and funny as it is slick and stylish. It's 2001's Ocean's Eleven, directed by Steven Soderbergh, written by Ted Griffin, and starring George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Andy Garcia, Julia Roberts, Elliott Gould, Casey Affleck, Scott Caan, Bernie Mac, Don Cheadle, Carl Reiner, Eddie Jemison, Shaobo Qin and Topher Grace. Soderbergh is clearly having a ball bringing this material to life with an all-star cast of capital-M capital-S Movie Stars, but the movie is more understated than its more dazzling sequels, and never loses sight of the human heart at its core that makes all the action matter in the first place. It's a beautiful film, visually and emotionally, and feels like the kind of adult-oriented entertainment that Hollywood seems hard-pressed to cook up these day. Plus: J Mo's been to theatre to see Soderbergh's first of two new entries in 2025, and is back with a theatrical field report on the POV ghost story Presence. If you'd like to watch the movie before listening along to our conversation, Ocean's Eleven is currently streaming on Crave in Canada and Max in the United States. Other works discussed on this episode include Heartburn, Longlegs, Seven, The Silence of the Lambs, Black Bag, Kimi, Gladiator II, Jaws, Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation, Michael Clayton, Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning: Part I, Hulk, Saturday Night, Man of Steel, Dawn of the Dead (2004), Go, Marie Antoinette, The Last Showgirl, Ocean's 12, Ocean's 13, Out of Sight, Erin Brockovich, Traffic, Fight Club, The Long Goodbye and countless more. Next week, we're kicking off another February of wall-to-wall rom-coms as Love Month kicks off with Steve Martin's L.A. Story, which is currently free to stream in Canada at the time of publication of the CTV app. On Valentine's Day, it's Nicolas Cage and Cher in Moonstruck, followed by Jerry Maguire on the 21st. And we'll close out the month with another Hayley selection in the podcast canon as we induct 1999's 10 Things I Hate About You. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!
Big Tilda Swinter, AKA We Need to Talk About Tilda rolls along with the 2007 legal thriller Michael Clayton! Ben, Greg, Lindsey, Marshall, and Ray discuss George Clooney's starring role in Tony Gilroy's acclaimed directorial debut. Written and directed by Tony Gilroy and starring George Clooney, Tom Wilkinson, Tilda Swinton, and Sydney Pollack.
This week, we continue to collect members of the Ocean's gang like Infinity Stones, as we find Danny playing a convincing soldier and compelling leading man in a 90s geo-political thriller that feels like a total forgotbuster, despite starring two massive movie stars and launching DreamWorks as a studio. It's 1997's The Peacemaker, directed by Mimi Leder, and starring George Clooney, Nicole Kidman, Marcel Iureș, Aleksandr Baluev, Armin Mueller-Stahl, Holt McCallany, Goran Višnjić, and Michael Boatman. One of the Cloondog's early jumps from ER star to silverscreen leading man, this movie is also deeply tied to ER as a production. Clooney unquestionably has the juice however, and the movie's 90s thriller sensibilities -- while not as refined as some of its contemporaries -- still feels like something of a lost art, a type of movie we just don't get enough of these days. If you'd like to watch the movie before listening to our discussion, it is not available to stream in Canada but can be rented on YouTube and Cineplex. Other works discussed on this episode include The X-Files, Groundhog Day, Source Code, The X-Files: Fight The Future, The Blues Brothers, Trading Places, You've Got Mail, The Taking of Pelham One Two Three, The Incredible Hulk, The Avengers: Age of Ultron, Thelma, Mission: Impossible - Fallout, The Beekeeper, The Art of War, The Foreigner, Superman Returns, Strangers on a Train, Jerry Springer: Fights, Camera, Action, The House, Weird: The Al Yankovic Story, The Bourne Identity, Clear and Present Danger, Mission: Impossible, Batman & Robin, The Green Hornet, Deep Impact, Armageddon, Pay It Forward, On The Basis Of Sex, The Leftovers, The Morning Show, Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit, Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol, Three Kings, The Men Who Stare At Goats, 24, Burn After Reading, Michael Clayton, Out of Sight, Twisters and Legally Blonde. Next week, we're switching things up and going back to Hayley's new VHS stack to talk one of the all-time great westerns: 1992's Unforgiven, Clint Eastwood's deconstruction of the genre that made him famous and a worthy winner of Best Picture Oscar gold. Unforgiven is streaming on Crave in Canada and Max in the US. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!

"I realized Michael, that I had emerged– not from the doors of Kenner, Bach & Ledeen– not through the portals of our vast and powerful law firm, but from the a**hole of an organism who's sole function is to excrete the poison, the ammo, the defoliant necessary for other, larger, more powerful organisms to destroy the miracle of humanity."That's right folks, we're wrapping up Steve's 2007 series with Tony Gilroy's, Michael Clayton. Have you ever wondered what would happen if "Rambo" met "Michael Clayton"? Tune in as we unravel the brilliance of Jeremy Saulnier's latest thriller "Rebel Ridge." With riveting performances by Aaron Pierre and Don Johnson, we dissect the film's intricate themes of asset forfeiture, rural corruption, and its thrilling action sequences. This episode isn't just a review; it's an exploration of Saulnier's meticulous filmmaking and his knack for creating gritty, immersive worlds. We draw intriguing comparisons between "Rebel Ridge" and Saulnier's earlier works like "Green Room" and "Blue Ruin," highlighting his commitment to adult-oriented narratives. Our conversation extends to the visceral impact of films like "Titane" and the thought-provoking body horror of "The Substance." We debate the provocative themes of female representation, particularly in the context of Hollywood's unrealistic beauty standards and the intense influence of social media culture. By exploring the transformative performances of actors like Margaret Qualley and Demi Moore, we provide a deep dive into how these films challenge societal norms and evoke strong emotional responses. This episode is packed with personal anecdotes and heartfelt reflections on how these films resonate with us and the broader audience. As we gear up for the upcoming Gig Harbor and Tacoma Film Festivals, we share our enthusiasm for the premieres, Q&A sessions, and local film showcases that make these events so special. On this episode, I spoke to sound designer Luke Gibleon and co-supervising sound editor Paul P. Soucek about their work on The Fall Guy. Gibleon is a 5x Emmy nominee for his work on Avatar: The Last Airbender, Masters of the Air, The Underground Railroad, El Camino and Twin Peaks. He is also a 4x MPSE Golden Reel Award winner for his work on The Underground Railroad, Greyhound, Togo and El Camino. He has also been nominated for The Continental, John Wick: Chapter 4, John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum, Game of Thrones, and A Faster Horse. Soucek is a 2x MPSE Golden Reel Award nominee for his work on John Wick: Chapter 4 and Michael Clayton. MORE ABOUT THE FALL GUY: He's a stuntman, and like everyone in the stunt community, he gets blown up, shot, crashed, thrown through windows and dropped from the highest of heights, all for our entertainment. And now, fresh off an almost career-ending accident, this working-class hero has to track down a missing movie star, solve a conspiracy and try to win back the love of his life while still doing his day job. What could possibly go right? From real life stunt man and director David Leitch, the blockbuster director of Bullet Train, Deadpool 2, Atomic Blonde and Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw and the producer of John Wick, Nobody and Violent Night, comes his most personal film yet. A new hilarious, hard-driving, all-star apex-action thriller and love letter to action movies and the hard-working and under-appreciated crew of people who make them: The Fall Guy. Oscar® nominee Ryan Gosling (Barbie, La La Land, Drive) stars as Colt Seavers, a battle-scarred stuntman who, having left the business a year earlier to focus on both his physical and mental health, is drafted back into service when the star of a mega-budget studio movie—being directed by his ex, Jody Moreno, played by Golden Globe winner Emily Blunt (Oppenheimer, A Quiet Place films, Sicario)—goes missing. While the film's ruthless producer (Emmy winner Hannah Waddingham; Ted Lasso), maneuvers to keep the disappearance of star Tom Ryder (Golden Globe winner Aaron Taylor-Johnson; Bullet Train) a secret from the studio and the media, Colt performs the film's most outrageous stunts while trying (with limited success) to charm his way back into Jody's good graces. But as the mystery around the missing star deepens, Colt will find himself ensnared in a sinister, criminal plot that will push him to the edge of a fall more dangerous than any stunt. Inspired by the hit 1980s TV series, The Fall Guy also stars Winston Duke (Black Panther franchise) and Academy Award® nominee Stephanie Hsu (Everything Everywhere All at Once). From a screenplay by Hobbs & Shaw screenwriter Drew Pearce, The Fall Guy is produced by Kelly McCormick (Bullet Train, Nobody, Atomic Blonde) and David Leitch for their company 87North, and by Ryan Gosling and by Guymon Casady (Game of Thrones, Steve Jobs and executive producer of the upcoming series Ripley) for Entertainment 360. The film is executive produced by Drew Pearce, Entertainment 360's Geoff Shaevitz and the creator of the original Fall Guy television series, Glen A. Larson.

“This was supposed to be our prestige episode” The panel of peril go to the bathroom and lock themselves in a stall and check how sweaty their pits are. Very. They're very, very sweaty. No wonder, as they face a goliath in this week's film: Michael Clayton (Tony Gilroy, 2007). Michael (George Clooney) is a self-described janitor who cleans up messes on behalf of clients for a prestigious New York law firm. A law firm currently in the midst of defending against a $3bn lawsuit against pesticide manufacturers U-North. All is not well, however, as the cases's lead, Arthur Edens (Tom Wilkinson), has stopped taking his medication and spirals into a series of manic episodes partly due to the knowledge that U-North had full knowledge of their product being lethal to humans. What lengths will U-North's general counsel, Karen Crowder (Tilda Swinton), go to keep their dirty secret? Watch the trailer here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5kJRYBhG43Q ********PLOT SPOILER ALERT******** She'll go as far as murder, actually. Setting two goons after both Michael and Arthur, a deadly game of cat and mouse ensues as our lawyers with consciences try to stay one step ahead of U-North, reveal the truth, and make it out of the tense situation alive. This is a true powerhouse of a film, peril pals, and you can be sure we treat it with the sobriety it deserves ;) Just what did the panel think of this week's movie? How can they improve upon U-North's evil plot? This week, P.T.August continues with P.T.A.'s most recent output, and for the second time this year we're joined once again by the people's champion Matt Pollock to talk about a movie he has been smitten with since its COVID-era theatrical release: it's 2021's Licorice Pizza, written and directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, and starring Alana Haim, Cooper Hoffman, Sean Penn, Tom Waits, Bradley Cooper, Benny Safdie, Skyler Gisondo, Mary Elizabeth Ellis, Harriet Sansom Harris, and the entire Haim family. A collection of mostly true stories from 1970s L.A. embued with the golden glow of Anderson's own That One Summer childhood nostalgia, its led by two extremely winning performances from a pair of actors both making their big screen debuts. While not without its controversies, it's a dreamlike hazy hangout movie we all loved quite a lot. If you'd like to watch the film before listening along to our discussion, Licorice Pizza is currently streaming in Canada on Crave and across the globe on the Criterion Channel at the time of publication. Other works referenced in this episode include Twisters, Targets, Scanners, Kim's Video, Michael Clayton, Saturday Night, The Ladies Man, Coneheads, It's Pat, Rebel Ridge, Hold The Dark, Green Room, Blue Ruin, Clueless, Dazed and Confused, Wild Wild West, An Evening With Kevin Smith, A Star Is Born, Maestro, Warrior, Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret, The Curse, Good Time, Coffee and Cigarettes, Down By Law, Rumble Fish, The Outsiders, The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, Mystery Men, Domino, Seven Psychopaths, Special When Lit, Pinball: The Man Who Saved The Game, and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood..., among countless others. We'll be back next week with more P.T.August as Travis Woloshyn joins the two-timer club, returning to talk another fumblingly comic detective noir as we watch Joaquin Phoenix and Katherine Waterston in 2014's Inherent Vice! Which is shockingly not currently streaming, at least not in Canada, so... good luck. Try the library! Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!
Paula Scher calls The Verdict "a favorite" and rightfully so. The performances are spectacular, the mystery keeps you engaged, and the ending leaves a mark. In addition to the movie, we discuss dedication and focus, Better Call Saul, pinball, Cool Hand Luke, and Michael Clayton, although not in that order. Her new book, "Paula Scher: Works" chronicles her early days in the music industry as an art director with CBS Records and Atlantic Records, to the launch of her first studio Koppel & Scher, to her 25-year engagement with Pentagram.
We watch a perfectly middle of the road movie and talk about aspiring to be a Michael Clayton, the burden of ripped from the headlines movie making, Mark Ruffalo being extremely fifty years old, and more! Check out our letterboxd list if you'd like to see all the movies covered that way! Send us any email questions and comments about the movies we cover or movies in general to abnormalmappingpodcast@gmail.com! Picture this: it's the year 2007. Dan Lewis reaches new heights, the Zodiac is speaking, the green dress (!!!) The omissions are minor, the discrepancies are negligible. Who is Michael Clayton? Where is Paul Dano? And are there too many Old Men in this Country?*This episode was recorded 4/19/2024 Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Chick Flicks is back in real time! In this episode, McKenzie and Bridget tackle another practical effects masterpiece, John Carpenter's The Thing (1982). Crawling spider-heads, exploding chests, and cosmic horror canines have helped make The Thing a cult classic, despite being a commercial and critical flop upon its release. Listen to hear us talk about The Thing, Xander Budnick, Michael Clayton, and more!
Go! Go! Go! Go! This week, Jimmy and Larry are assessing the fallout from last week's nuclear pod, how many collars are too many collars, when is your belt dangle too long, hard-wearing Canadian gorp 2.0 and custom jewelry that needs to be on your radar, IG brands (derogatory) vs. IG artisans, getting lectured in your own home, why Kanye continues to surround himself with bozos like NoJulz, Milo Whatshisname and Dov Charney aka Woody Allen, fan accounts for hire, the week in grifting, handling hit pieces 101, Loro Piana are shockingly war profiteers, only Michael Clayton can take down Boeing and quiet luxury, Texas' PornHub ban and its ramifications on real beaters, new evil Abercrombie & Fitch scandal just dropped, Palace x Gap and why we're finally both bullish on a mall brand, Phoebe Philo speaks for the first time in a decade, cost per wear changes everything and much more. Once the Queen of Rom-Com's, Julia Roberts returned to the genre which made her a household name fifteen years ago and she also reuinited with Clive Owen, her co-star of Closer, their acclaimed drama about about five years prior. And they were both being directed by Tony Gilroy who just about 18 months prior had directed the seminal legal thriller Michael Clayton. It also featured the promising premise of a romantic partnership between an ex-CIA agent (Roberts) and ex-MI6 agent (Owen) joining forces to pull a double cross on two dueling pharmaceutical companies who are they are each now running security for....with the heads of those companies are played by Oscar-nominated acting forces Paul Giamatti and Tom Wilkinson. (RIP) And......nobody really cared?? Let's examine why and IF this romantic caper's weak reception was deserved or not.....Host & Editor: Geoff GershonProducer: Marlene Gershon https://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/
Pirate Cove: An Insider's Account of the Infamous Southport Lane Scandal by Richard D. Bailey https://amzn.to/3w8C4U0 In Pirate Cove, Richard D. Bailey provides an insider's chronicle of a white-collar crime whose headline-grabbing elements first appeared on the front pages of The Wall Street Journal. It's the true, unvarnished, complete, previously untold, and fascinating story of how one honest man helped unravel the massive Southport Lane fraud perpetrated by the author's former employer, 26-year-old, self-proclaimed financial prodigy Alexander Chatfield Burns. A really smart friend of the author once asked Burns how he got control of four state-regulated insurance companies. With a Cheshire cat grin, Burns cryptically responded, “Jesus with a telescope on Mars couldn't figure out how I did this.” But the author eventually did. If (and when) Pirate Cove is made into a movie, it'll stand right alongside such successful dramedies as American Hustle, Can You Ever Forgive Me, Bad Education, White Collar Crime, The Wolf of Wall Street, and Michael Clayton. Richard D. Bailey is the author of Pirate Cove, released by Bancroft Press in November 2023. For over 30 years, he has been providing interim and long-term management, and corporate development services to distressed public and private manufacturing, service, and distribution companies. In 2013, Bailey was hired by Southport Lane Management (“Southport”), a New York-based private equity firm. Shortly after he was hired, he noticed unusual cash transfers by and between multiple Southport-owned and -controlled LLC's. Upon further investigation, Mr. Bailey uncovered critical evidence of what would turn out to be a $350 million fraud. He then worked closely with FBI investigators for several years. This resulted in four indictments and four guilty pleas. Three of the perpetrators served prison time. In late October 2021, Alexander Chatfield Burns, the leader of the fraud, committed suicide prior to being sentenced. As a result, with millions unaccounted for, in the eyes of the law he died an innocent man. His book, Pirate Cove is the true story of a fake Caravaggio, a bogus Yale degree, a 26 year old self-proclaimed genius, and the unraveling of a $350 million fraud. He holds a BA from Providence College and an MA from Fairfield University.

To wrap up the initial run of our Great Courses series, Garrett brings on the doyen of Australian golf Michael Clayton (@mikeclaytongolf) to discuss the brilliant courses at Royal Melbourne. Garrett and Mike discuss Mike's personal history with Royal Melbourne, the architectural history of Alister MacKenzie's West Course and Alex Russell's East Course, the impact of these designs on the Australian game, and the finest rounds of golf Mike has seen played over Royal Melbourne's famed Composite Course. We loved making the first four episodes of the Great Courses series, and we hope you enjoyed listening to them. Let us know if you'd like more (and if you have suggestions for topics)!
On this week's episode of Unclear and Present Danger — the last episode of the year! — we watched Tony Scott's 1995 submarine action thriller, “Crimson Tide,” starring Denzel Washington, Gene Hackman, Viggo Mortenson and James Gandolfini, among many others. And to discuss “Crimson Tide,” we have an esteemed guest! Tony Gilroy, who you may know from his work on the Bourne films, political thrillers like “State of Play,” “Beirut,” legal thrillers like “Michael Clayton” or the recent Star Wars Disney Plus series “Andor.” Now, if you haven't watched “Crimson Tide” — and you should, stop this episode and go put it on — here's the score. In “Crimson Tide,” the crew of the USS Alabama, a nuclear submarine, is put on high alert as civil war breaks out in post-Soviet Russia. Military units loyal to the ultra-nationalist rebel have taken control of a nuclear missile installation and have threatened nuclear war if threatened. The USS Alabama is commanded by Captain Frank Ramsey, a career veteran of the submarine corps. He has chosen the cerebral and inexperienced Lieutenant Commander Ron Hunter to serve as his new executive officer. The two clash, eventually coming to an impasse over an Emergency Action Message order a missile launch against the Russian base. Ramsey wants to move forward while Hunter wants to delay action until the USS Alabama can clarify a second message received but interrupted as the crew confronted an enemy submarine. What follows is a confrontation, a mutiny, and a race to confirm the Alabama's true orders lest they fire the shot that starts a nuclear conflagration. The tagline for “Crimson Tide” was “Danger Runs Deep.”You can find “Crimson Tide” for rent or purchase on iTunes and Amazon. Our next episode will be on “Executive Decision,” directed by Stuart Baird and starring Kurt Russell, Halle Berry and John Leguizamo.
