The season around Halloween and Samhain is a liminal time when shadows grow and lengthen in the world and psyche. The old Celtic stories of poet warriors and fairies feel especially potent to me right now, so I'm dipping back into the collection Irish Fairy Tales by James Stephens for this story offering. "The Enchanted Cave of Cesh Corran" is rich in metaphor, humor, and insight, and also provides a launching point for reflection on the different types of interpretation we bring to myths and the nature of a mythic sensibility in these times.Support the showEmail Catherine at drcsvehla@mythicmojo.comPost a positive review on apple podcasts! St. Patrick's Day is at hand, and so a couple of Irish fairy tales, collected by W. B. Yeats.
It was the only way they could get rid of such a man; but it was not an easy way, for what Fionn's father did not know in arms could not be taught to him even by Morna. Still, the hound that can wait will catch a hare at last, and even Manana'nn sleeps. Fionn's mother was beautiful, long haired Muirne: so she is always referred to. Irish Fairy Tales, early special effects and a very young Sean Connery! We discuss this little known Disney movie, and all it's whimsy and (in my case) terror. There are 11 stories in this book, and I’m going to go through all of them, in time. Today though I;m starting at number 1 – The Story of Tuan Mac cairill; a struggle of willpower, defeat, new hope, and a tale as old as time itself. We learn about Finnian the Abbot of Moville, and Tuan Mac Cairill, a god in his own right, from multiple lineages, with a rich history to share with those that are willing to listen. If this story sounds uncomfortably familiar, don't worry: you're not going crazy. This week we take a look at "Hudden and Dudden and Donald O'Leary," the Irish version of last week's story, BEFORE it got horrifying. Though it's full up on gang beatings, so maybe it's not THAT much better.
