Thirty years after the "Green Man" forged a Gothic masterpiece, the vault has finally cracked open. In this exclusive episode, Loaded Radio's Scott Penfold sits down with Johnny Kelly and Kenny Hickey to discuss a bombshell discovery: a completely unreleased, finished song from the legendary Type O Negative October Rust sessions. It's on cassette but hey a new song nonetheless. Johnny describes digging through a mountain of 1996-era cassettes to find a "lost" track that was cannibalized for parts but remains a stand-alone treasure. Is an October Rust 30th Anniversary box set in the cards for 2026? We dive deep into the archaeology of the Drab Four. But the future is just as heavy. We break down the debut full-length album from Sun Don't Shine—From Birth to Death—featuring the crushing lineup of Hickey, Kelly, Kirk Windstein, and Todd Strange. Plus, we get the latest update on the upcoming Silvertomb record and why the spirit of Brooklyn goth and doom is more alive than ever. In this episode, we discuss: The story behind the "Lost" October Rust track. Johnny's process of archiving dozens of unreleased Type O rehearsal tapes. The making of Sun Don't Shine's debut album. Some books don't just sit on your shelf… they judge you.In today's episode of Fantasy for the Ages, Jim and Zach confess the most intimidating fantasy, sci-fi, and horror books they still haven't read — even though they really want to.We're talking about the massive, the dense, the legendary, and the “I'll get to it someday…” reads that every SFF fan knows all too well. From sprawling epics like The Wheel of Time to notoriously complex reads like The Malazan Book of the Fallen, and even all-time classics like Dune — these are the books that feel less like a casual read… and more like a full-on commitment.Along the way, we talk about:• Why some books feel so intimidating to start• Whether the hype actually makes it harder to dive in• Which ones we might finally read soon• And which ones might stay on the shelf just a little longer…If you've ever looked at a giant fantasy series or dense sci-fi classic and thought, “Yeah… not yet,” this episode is for you.⸻

We had so much fun revisiting Mid-World for this episode – it's the first series that brought us together as book nerds twenty years ago, and it's absolutely just as good as the first day we read it. So thankful it helped tie our friendship together, and laid the foundation for meeting all the rest of you Hugonauts all these years later! The Dark Tower defies (or bridges) genres, with elements of sci-fi, fantasy, western, horror, and more, all rolled into one legendary package. And Roland Deschain, the Gunslinger, is an incredible main character, and we'll never forget the rest of the Ka-Tet either. And the ending – we won't spoil it here, but man do we like thinking about this ending (it's one of the most polarizing in all of literature). You may be picking up on the fact that we kinda like these books. Are some of the greatest science fiction books ever written… “unpublishable” today? In this episode of Fantasy for the Ages, we explore classic sci-fi masterpieces that might struggle to get published in today's market—not because they're bad, but because publishing trends have changed.Classic science fiction often focused on big ideas: philosophy, sociology, religion, artificial intelligence, the future of humanity, and massive conceptual worldbuilding. Many of these stories were episodic, idea-driven, experimental in structure, or deeply philosophical—things that modern publishing sometimes finds harder to market. So what would happen if these legendary books landed on a publisher's desk in 2026?Would editors ask for:• faster pacing?• stronger central protagonists?• fewer philosophical digressions?• clearer genre hooks?Today we're looking at 11 classic sci-fi books and series that might not get published today—but absolutely should. These works helped shape the entire science fiction genre, influencing generations of writers, filmmakers, and readers. But would they make it through the modern publishing process today?Let's talk about it.⸻
Are some of the greatest fantasy books ever written… “unpublishable” today? In this episode of Fantasy for the Ages, I explore 20 classic fantasy novels and series that might struggle to get traditionally published in today's market — despite being absolutely brilliant. We're talking about sprawling epics.Earnest heroism.Clear moral frameworks.Slow-burn mythic storytelling.Yes… even farm boys with destiny. This isn't about nostalgia. And it's definitely not about tearing down modern fantasy. It's about how publishing trends shift, how markets change, and how certain storytelling styles rise and fall in popularity.Would today's industry greenlight:• 1,000+ page epics?• Overtly metaphysical themes?• Clear good vs. evil conflicts?• Long-form mythic pacing?Or would they be told to trim, modernize, or “subvert expectations”?Let's talk about it.

Some books are incredible experiences. They challenge us.They wreck us emotionally. They leave a permanent mark. And then… once is enough. In this episode of Fantasy for the Ages, Jim and Zach talk about fantasy, science fiction, and horror books they're genuinely glad they read, but have absolutely no desire to ever revisit. Not because they're bad. Not because they failed. But because they succeeded too well.We discuss:• Emotionally devastating reads• Intellectually exhausting masterpieces• Surprise heavyweights that hit harder than expected• Horror novels that did their job too well• Why rereadability is NOT the same thing as qualityThis is a reflective, conversation-driven episode about how we read, why we read, and how our relationship with books changes over time.

New Sun Road is an energy tech company pioneering the acceleration of renewable energy deployment through their IoT and cloud-based platform. As a public benefit corporation, they focus on underserved communities while managing over 1,500 systems across diverse applications from wildfire mitigation with PG&E to remote telecommunications towers. In this episode of Category Visionaries, we sat down with CEO Adrienne Pierce to explore how they've built a platform that serves as the "brain" for distributed energy systems and their unique approach to go-to-market in the complex energy sector. Topics Discussed: New Sun Road's evolution from energy access solutions to comprehensive renewable energy platform management The company's IoT and cloud-based approach to monitoring and controlling distributed energy resources Their diverse customer base spanning solar installers, utilities, telecommunications, and remote communities The complexity of 6-18 month sales cycles in energy infrastructure projects Strategic pivot from sector-focused to partner-enabled go-to-market approach Operating as a public benefit corporation and its impact on team alignment and business development Navigating regulatory changes and their delayed impact on project timelines Thought leadership strategy around emerging technologies like vehicle-to-grid and networked microgrids GTM Lessons For B2B Founders: Partner with domain experts rather than becoming one yourself: Adrienne explained their strategic shift: "We started with kind of a sector strategy where we're like, oh, we can do electric vehicles... But what we found was that it's very hard to be experts in all of these different sectors." Instead of trying to master every vertical, they focused on being the best at what they do—energy management technology—and partnered with domain experts in each sector. B2B founders should resist the temptation to become everything to everyone and instead find strong partners who can complement their core competencies. Focus resources on highest-impact activities in resource-constrained environments: Pierce emphasized the critical importance of opportunity cost for small organizations: "For small organizations, I think the biggest cost is opportunity cost. So if I'm spending my time chasing leads and doing lead gen and that's where my resources are going, then it may be at the behest of something that's more productive." B2B founders must ruthlessly prioritize activities that drive the most value and avoid spreading thin across low-yield activities, especially in early stages when every hour counts. Build for complex, consultative sales cycles with technical buyers: With sales cycles ranging 6-18 months, New Sun Road's approach centers on deep technical engagement: "We are at the heart of what the project is doing from a control and performance perspective, you know, there are a lot of things to just make sure that we're aligned on and develop a really strong partnership." B2B founders selling to technical buyers in complex infrastructure projects should invest heavily in technical credibility and relationship-building rather than traditional sales tactics. Leverage authenticity as a differentiator in purpose-driven markets: As a public benefit corporation, Pierce noted: "It has channeled and been a differentiator for what we're doing and how we're doing it... it's created an amazing team environment." When your market values purpose alongside profit, authentic commitment to mission can become a significant competitive advantage. B2B founders should consider how genuine purpose alignment can strengthen both team cohesion and customer relationships, but only if the commitment is authentic. Anticipate regulatory lag in heavily regulated industries: Pierce shared valuable insight about regulatory timing: "One thing about regulation is that there is lag. So you can change the regulation and it takes a while for it to trickle down and to have impact... when I look at changing regulation, I'm looking at, well, how is that going to impact 2026?" B2B founders in regulated industries should build regulatory change anticipation into their product roadmap and sales strategy, understanding that today's regulatory shifts create tomorrow's market opportunities. // Sponsors: Front Lines — We help B2B tech companies launch, manage, and grow podcasts that drive demand, awareness, and thought leadership. www.FrontLines.io The Global Talent Co. — We help tech startups find, vet, hire, pay, and retain amazing marketing talent that costs 50-70% less than the US & Europe. www.GlobalTalent.co // Don't Miss: New Podcast Series — How I Hire Senior GTM leaders share the tactical hiring frameworks they use to build winning revenue teams. In this episode, host KMO speaks with Kevin, co-host of the podcast and Substack publication "Synthesize Sunsets," which explores speculative fiction and the evolution of popular culture in the age of AI and algorithms.Key Discussion Points:17776 by John Boyce: Kevin discusses this multimedia science fiction narrative and how it represents a missed opportunity for innovation in digital storytelling formats.Decades losing their distinctiveness: The conversation explores how time periods had unique visual and cultural identities in the 20th century, while the 21st century has seen a flattening of aesthetic differences between decades.Publishing industry consolidation: They discuss how the consolidation of publishing houses has led to less diversity in science fiction and contributed to the growth of romance-focused fantasy at the expense of traditional science fiction.Science fiction authors and works: The pair share their perspectives on influential authors including Gene Wolfe's "Book of the New Sun," Ursula K. Le Guin, N.K. Jemisin's "Broken Earth" trilogy, Ted Chiang, Iain M. Banks, and Cixin Liu.Christianity and literature: How religious literacy impacts readers' ability to engage with certain works, particularly Gene Wolfe's writing which contains subtle Christian themes.Political perspectives in fiction: The challenges of creating politically engaged fiction that doesn't feel didactic, using examples like Banks' "Culture" series and contemporary works.Media and intellectual diversity: Kevin expresses hope for greater intellectual diversity in media and publishing, noting that Chinese sci-fi author Cixin Liu represents a genuinely different cultural perspective.

“The man in black fled across the desert, and the podcaster followed…” Welcome to the start of what is sure to be an epic journey. Step by step, over more than a dozen episodes, Talking Scared will be following the beam all the way to the Dark Tower – that mad edifice at the heart of Stephen King's opus. Maybe it's the heart of every story ever told… time will tell. Unlike Roland Deschain, I don't go alone. I'm joined by author and fellow King-nut, Nat Cassidy (Mary, Nestlings, When the Wolf Comes Home) and absolute newbie, Chris Panatier (The Phlebotomist, The Redemption of Morgan Bright) and in this first ever episode we tussle with the tricky, dusty, thorny opening that is Book One: The Gunslinger. What follows dives deep into the book, but is 100% spoiler free about anything beyond it. So if you've only read The Gunslinger, you're good to go. I hope you enjoy our wanderings. I hope you tinct. I hope you darkle. Other books mentioned: On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft (2000), by Stephen King It (1986), by Stephen King The Jerusalem Man (1988), by David Gemmell The Book of the New Sun (series, 1980-1987), by Gene Wolfe Support Talking Scared on Patreon Come talk books on Twitter @talkscaredpod, on Instagram, or email direct to talkingscaredpod@gmail.com Learn more about your ad choices. In the first installment of a new Into the Depths series, we dive into the brilliant Caves of Qud. This sprawling open-world roguelike has been in development since 2007 and Early Access since 2015, and we're celebrating it as it nears a v1.0 release. Doug and Rob, together with guest host and Qud-head Jack Schlesinger (Puzzmo, Knotwords, Good Sudoku), talk to Caves of Qud creators Brian Bucklew and Jason Grinblat all about post-apocalyptic worldbuilding, building an emergence-focused game engine, and what it takes to keep a project and partnership going for nearly two decades. Don't forget to join our discord and play along with the series. Try to get a character to Level 5 before our next episode, where we'll get into some basics around the early game and Qud's many interlocking systems. Andy and Brendan are on site in Los Angeles this week and this Wednesday episode includes some preview scuttlebutt after a day out at Riviera. They begin with the early-week range scene, where one star was allegedly reticent to put a new driver in his bag. Then they get to Tiger's season debut, which will be done in his brand new clothing line, and there is some reaction to that unveiling. There's some SSG scuttlebutt after a John Henry sighting and some thoughts on the state of that deal. They discuss some initial course impressions, including two new greens and the potential softness for the coming weekend. News hits on further reaction to the Phoenix debauchery and some more Anthony Kim rumors about a potential ramp-up and return.
