Show Notes This week on MSB, we're covering Victory Gundam episode 33: The People Who Dwell in the Sea. We discuss cargo cults, infantilization as a function of government, virgin mothers, parallel character development, Victory's anti-feminism, all the stories that aren't being told, and of course: balls. Mobile Suit Breakdown is written, recorded, and produced within Lenapehoking, the ancestral and unceded homeland of the Lenape, or Delaware, people. Before European settlers forced them to move west, the Lenape lived in New York City, New Jersey, and portions of New York State, Pennsylvania, Delaware, and Connecticut. Lenapehoking is still the homeland of the Lenape diaspora, which includes communities living in Oklahoma, Wisconsin, and Ontario. You can learn more about Lenapehoking, the Lenape people, and ongoing efforts to honor the relationship between the land and indigenous peoples by visiting the websites of the Delaware Tribe and the Manhattan-based Lenape Center. Preaching for the Twelfth Sunday, Teresa Thompson offers a reflection on entering into chaos - particularly the chaos of combating climate change - confident in God's presence: "Chaos gets a bad rap, and oftentimes when these large-scale proposals for climate changes solutions are made, they are dismissed as too messy, too disruptive, too difficult to implement, too extreme. What these dismissals fail to acknowledge is that we find God in chaos, and God accompanies us in it." Teresa Thompson is a writer, therapist, and amateur theologian based in Brooklyn, NY. She is a board member of the Metro NY chapter of Call To Action and serves as part of the Catholic Lesbians ministry and Healing Prayer ministry at the Church of Saint Francis Xavier. Last month, during a visit to the Stella Maris monastery in Haifa, President Yitzhak Herzog spoke out against the spate of attacks on Christians in Israel, particularly in Jerusalem's Old City.  "In recent months we have seen very serious phenomena towards the Christian denominations in the Holy Land," said Herzog.  The president called for greater understanding of the histories of the religious communities in the Holy Land, noting that it was the birthplace of the three monotheistic religions. "We must do everything so that the common life continues together," he said. The Israel Police's chief rabbi has brokered an arrangement under which  Hasidic followers of Rabbi Eliezer Berland will not worship at the Catholic Stella Maris monastery in Haifa until after Rosh Hashana, the Jewish New Year. The Hasids claim that Elisha the Prophet is buried on the site.    Church officials were angry over the deal and said that no negotiations must be held with the "squatters."    Haifa Mayor Einat Kalisch Rotem also spoke out against the proposed arrangement and said: The church belongs to the Christians, period.  Father Jean Joseph Bergara, the monastery superior of Stella Maris, told us the claims of the followers of Rabbi Berland are not true and the remains of the Biblical prophet Elisha are not at the site and therefore Jews  should not be allowed to pray at  the monastery.  Father Jean Joseph Bergara first explained the history of the Stela Maris monastery. Why are ultra-Orthodox Jews suddenly praying at a Haifa church?

Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 15-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world, from Sunday through Thursday. Political correspondent Tal Schneider and religions reporter Canaan Lidor join host Amanda Borschel-Dan on today's episode. The Anti-Defamation League and partner organizations in France, the United Kingdom, Germany and Spain released a report focussing on on left-wing antisemitism. Why is this unusual? Yesterday, Opposition leader and former prime minister Yair Lapid met with UAE Foreign Minister Abdullah Bin Zayed in Italy to discuss bilateral ties and advance joint projects. Was Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in the know? Environmental Protection Minister Idit Silman announced last week that two nature reserves near Jerusalem will remain open outside of the usual operating hours for visitors who require gender-segregated bathing. What happened next? Early this week in a Bloomberg English-language interview, Netanyahu indicated that his government will move ahead with changing the makeup of the Judicial Selection Committee and then stop. But will his own Likud MKs support him? We end with a curious story out of Haifa's Stella Maris church where ultra-Orthodox Jews are increasingly making pilgrimage to what they consider is grave of the Prophet Elisha, Elijah's disciple. Why the Jews' sudden interest in this site? Discussed articles include: Europe's far-left is normalizing antisemitism, report co-authored by ADL warns Lapid meets UAE foreign minister in Italy, amid hiatus in high-level visits Environment minister announces sex-segregated hours at parks, prompting legal review Netanyahu: Coalition will probably remake judicial selection panel, then halt overhaul PM doesn't have the votes to remake judicial selection panel, Likud said to believe At a Haifa church, Jewish pilgrims test coexistence strained by painful history Subscribe to The Times of Israel Daily Briefing on iTunes, Spotify, PlayerFM, Google Play, or wherever you get your podcasts. Editor and literary critic Oscar Villalon joins V.V. Ganeshananthan and Whitney Terrell to celebrate the life and legacy of the novelist Cormac McCarthy, who died last month. The hosts and Villalon reflect on McCarthy's vast vocabulary and cinematic descriptions, in which he juxtaposed lyrical prose with graphic violence. Villalon considers McCarthy's use of regionally accurate Spanish in the Border Trilogy as evidence of the author's broad understanding of the U.S.'s multilingual diversity. Villalon also reads and discusses a passage from McCarthy's 1994 novel The Crossing, the second book in the trilogy. Like the rest of the world I learned this past Tuesday, June 13th, that Cormac McCarthy had passed away at the age of 89.  This episode had already been recorded, but I thought it would still serve as an initial and quick response to the need to offer a tribute: it's a compilation of the responses to the question What's your favorite McCarthy novel, and why? from the podcast's first 16 guests. The guests responding to the "favorite book and why" question this episode are:  Steven Frye, Dianne Luce, Bill Hardwig, Nell Sullivan, Brian Giemza, Dennis McCarthy, Stacey Peebles, Paulo Faria, Jay Watson, Marty Priola, Bryan Vescio, Michael Crews, Peter Josyph, Richard Poe, Rick Wallach, Lydia Cooper, and myself.  It is worth noting that at the time of the recording It is worth noting that at the time of the recording of each of these responses, The Passenger and Stella Maris had not yet been published. A more intentional tribute will be forthcoming soon.  As posted on the society website: Cormac McCarthy  1933-2023It is with great sadness but also with deep gratitude that we mourn the loss of Cormac McCarthy. His contributions to literature, and to our lives, have been momentous. McCarthy was one of the most notable authors of his or indeed any generation. In his long, rich life, lived in places as various as Knoxville, Santa Fe, and Ibiza, his voracious curiosity led him equally to the most abstract ideas and the most downtrodden of barflies, all the cracks and corners of human thought and experience, our endless potential for both coming together and violently wrenching apart. He never compromised his devotion to the beauty of language and the necessary art of storytelling. He leaves behind an extraordinary body of work, tapestries of character, history, philosophy, environment, and the moral questions that pull at all of us. Stacey Peebles, PresidentLydia Cooper, Vice President Thanks to Thomas Frye, who composed, performed, and produced the music for READING MCCARTHY.   The views of the host and his guests do not necessarily reflect the views of their home institutions or the Cormac McCarthy Society, although in our hearts we hope they'll someday see the light.  Download and follow on Apple, Spotify, Google Play, Stitcher, or wherever you get your podcasts.  If you're agreeable it'll help us if you provide favorable reviews on these platforms.  If you enjoy this podcast you may also enjoy the GREAT AMERICAN NOVEL PODCAST, hosted by myself and Kirk Curnutt.  To contact me, please reach out to readingmccarthy(@)gmail.com. Cormac McCarthy is a literary icon. Winner of the National Book Award and the National Book Critics Circle Award for his novel All the Pretty Horses, and the Pulitzer Prize for his apocalyptic novel The Road, Norma's earlier novel, Blood Meridian has been labelled The Great American Novel. Many people did not know that this cultural giant is also fascinated by, and amazingly knowledgeable about science. Reading his newest books, The Passenger and Stella Maris (released this week!), however, and that becomes obvious. The protagonists are mathematical and physics prodigies, and just as one may requires a dictionary to keep up with the the remarkably diverse prose in Cormac's writing, some people may need to consult some popular books on science to fully appreciate the scientific asides sprinkled throughout both volumes. I first met Cormac at the Santa Fe Institute back when I was considering a possible position there as its Director, some years ago. I was shocked to walk into the kitchenette there and discover him, as I had no idea that is where he spent his time. But, as we discuss in our dialogue, he moved to Santa Fe at the invitation of Nobel Laureate physicist Murray Gell Mann to join the new Institute. Cormac and I became fast friends then, and have remained friends ever since. The best hour of radio I ever did was with Cormac and Werner Herzog, on the occasion of Herzog's film Cave of Forgotten Dreams, where both Cormac and Werner talked with amazing authority about the evolution paleontology of early modern humans. Then later, he honored me by asking if he could copyedit the paperback version of my book Quantum Man, a scientific biography of Richard Feynman. He said he wanted to make the paperback version ‘perfect', in part by removing all exclamation marks and semicolons.. Of course I said yes, and we added his name as copyeditor on the front page! I have known that Cormac is extremely reluctant to appear in public or do interviews. He agreed to appear in our film The Unbelievers, which was a great gift, but has often demurred when I have asked him to appear in other public panels on subjects we love to talk about in private. So, when I asked him if, on the occasion of the publication of his new books, the first books in 16 years, if we could sit down and record a conversation about science for The Origins Podcast, I was shocked and thrilled when he agreed. He is 89 years old now, and I was so pleased to have the chance to record some of his thoughts on science for posterity. He invited us into his home for an afternoon conversation after a long lunch, and the conversation that ensued was much like the conversations we have had over the years. Cormac loves to discuss science, but prefers to listen to physicists talk about their work rather than initiate conversations. He is, after all, notoriously laconic. But when he does speak about science, his insights are fascinating. Using some of the ideas discussed in his new books a launching points, our discussion ranged over quantum mechanics, the role of mathematics in science, and whether there will ever be a theory of everything. There were a variety of challenges that day, including the difficulty of filming something in a sunlight room without window shades, but the end result was unique and memorable. I hope you agree.
