For a guy nobody wants to talk about, we certainly had a lot to talk about....On yet another very special episode we dive into the underbelly of the world of hacking, illegal surveillance and some occasionally deprived and really weird stuff in the new documentary Nobody Wants To Talk About Jacob Applebaum which is having a second screening tonight at the TIFF Bell Lightbox before it debuts on CBC Gem this coming Wednesday the 26th.Julian Assange, the founder of WikiLeaks, had a crucial hearing at London's High Court last week where judges approved a short extension on his appeal to challenge possible extradition to the U.S. to confront 18 charges, predominantly under the Espionage Act. His fate, and the fate of those who worked with him, is still up in the air. If and/or when Assange is extradited to the U.S., attention will surely shift to his closest allies, including American Jacob Appelbaum, referred to as “WLA3” (WikiLeaks Associate 3) in indictments against Assange, who himself is currently residing in exile in Germany.  A new film by Canadian filmmaker Jamie Kastner, "Nobody Wants To Talk About Jacob Appelbaum" delves into the intriguing yet troubled persona of Appelbaum, whose destiny appears tightly interwoven with Assange's, and the obscure subculture from which they both emerged.  Kastner ("The Skyjacker's Tale”, "There Are No Fakes," + ) embarks on a quest to unravel the mysteries surrounding Jacob Appelbaum.  The film includes interviews reluctantly secured from elusive individuals including Appelbaum himself, woven together with seldom-seen footage and original investigative efforts, forming a cautionary tale relevant to our times. No word of lie, but this one gets a little out there, we had the pleasure of sitting down with friend of the show, director Jamie Kastner about what drew him to this story, how the film sits just on the wrong side of uncomfortable at times plus a little bonus news about how one of his previous films actually helped to generate some positive results in the world.Nobody Wants To Talk About Jacob Applebaum is on CBC Gem this Wednesday June 26th.

This was a time when Assange and other punks like him were running circles around governments. It seemed like the ability for the powers that be to keep secrets was over. It was just done. Thanks to Assange et al we were going to know if a cell phone company was surveying everyone. We were going to know if a government assassinated a bunch of people who turned out to be journalists. We were going to know. And between Anonymous and Wikileaks and Edward Snowden, it was happening in a way that felt like it was a force of nature, and there was no containing it. The authorities, what could they do? Information wanted to be free. Then, it all ended. Julian Assange has been rotting away in Belmarsh prison in the UK. Edward Snowden tweets from Russia. Wikileaks. When's the last time they released anything? The Empire struck back. There were arrests, there were accusations, and the machine was surprisingly effective and merciless in containing the free flow of information and government secrets. That's what happened to all those guys. You don't hear about them much anymore. But what about Jacob Appelbaum? What about that guy? No, nothing? Name doesn't ring a bell? Jacob Appelbaum was known to the authorities as Wikileaks Associate Number Three. He was also once the toast of the cyber community, feted by European politcos, and making red carpet appearances. Then the accusations came. And it all ended for Appelbaum. Just like that nobody wanted to talk about Jacob Appelbaum. But we do.Host: Jesse BrownCredits: Tristan Capacchione (Audio Editor and Technical Producer), Max Collins (Production Manager), Bruce Thorson (Senior Producer), Karyn Pugliese (Editor-in-Chief)Additional music by Audio NetworkFurther reading:Nobody wants to talk about Jacob Appelbaum — Jamie KastnerInconsistencies in Rape Allegations — Die Zeit (In English)What Has This Man Done? This is a free preview of a paid episode. To hear more, visit yasha.substack.comWe recently went to the local theater to watch Ithaca, a new documentary about Julian Assange that focuses on his dad's efforts to get him out of London's Belmarsh Prison, where he's been held in solitary since 2019 while fighting extradition to United States on espionage charges — initially under Trump but now under Biden. Oh how things change! To add some context to the film, we watched and discuss two other Julian Assange docs: Laura Poitras' Risk and Alex Gibney's We Steal Secrets. They amount to a decade's worth of documentaries about Wikileaks — chronicling the increasing repression and marginalization and hopelessness of Julian and his project to change the world by freeing information.—Yasha and EvgeniaA couple of notes on our discussion. The three films are all very different. Of the three, Risk is probably the most interesting to watch but also the most deceptive and least informative. It gives viewers a false sense of intimacy and reality, while on the backend being very manipulative. As we discus in the ep, most viewers probably won't know that after Risk premiered at Cannes — and after Laura Poitras appeared and hugged on the red carpet with Wikileaks sidekick Jacob Appelbaum — Poitras re-edited the film, changing the narrative to show Julian Assange and Jacob Appelbaum not as heroes but as predators. Yasha first found out about this sneaky re-edit from Julian back in 2017 when Julian was still holed up in the Ecuadorian Embassy. Julian felt betrayed and explained the re-editing of the film as Laura's attempt to protect her reputation from a couple of things that happened not long after the film had its premier in France. One was that Jacob Appelbaum — the Tor Project frontman with whom Laura was intimately involved with — was accused of being a sexual predator and was then cancelled by the privacy community. The second was that Julian became fully toxic in liberal circles during the 2016 presidential election: he was seen as a Russian asset who backed Trump over Hillary and released all those damaging emails. So as Julian explained: because of all of this Poitras had to betray her two friends — one of whom was in captivity, the other who used to be her lover — to make sure she came out of these scandals clean, even though she had no problem with any of this until it became public and a problem for her career. It was a tangled, gross situation.“I think it's mostly defensive. She's the daughter of a billionaire, and has an apartment in Tribecca, Manhattan,” Julian wrote to Yasha back then. “But she's pretty simple. She aspires to maximise her status among the Tribecca/Greenwich Village, etc. set.”

Art becomes a means to expose misconducts and abuses of Government, organisations and corporations. This approach has a double effect: from one side it informs the general public about unspoken facts or behaviours, which need to be revealed, and from the other, it empowers people to adopt this methodology and keep the ball of exposure rolling. The goal is to make people aware of such mechanisms, opening up a critical perspective to generate evidence as an artistic strategy and to improve transparency and alternatives to fear and control. Even when inter-personal communication becomes a field for the expanding narrative of total war, the goal is to reflect on the importance of establishing networks of trust and collective forms of civil disobedience.
