But ironically that success shows us how broken is our democracy. Today we’re in conversation with Jeremy Goff, an expert in Strategy, Communication & Investor Relations and he’s here for what’s likely to be a robust chat about the two main flaws in our democracy revealed by the Covid response - and the impact on small and medium businesses.…. Welcome to the show Jeremy. Topics we’ll be covering: The first flaw is ideology - in particular the cult of the budget surplus. When people’s lives depended on it in the pandemic, that went straight out the window because - as any householder with a mortgage will tell you - debt is good if it’s helping you invest in your future. But the pandemic response has been the exception. Throughout the last 23 years of economic growth there hasn’t been nearly enough government investment in creating the industries we need to support small business innovation. If governments had invested much more in supporting clean energy enterprises over the last twenty years, a regional port like Eden on the NSW far south coast could have become home to new sectors like wave power generation manufacturing. The flow on effects of an industry like that can be massive for a wide range of small businesses from welding and electrical engineering to services like catering, hospitality and facilities maintenance. But today those jobs are nowhere to be seen. The second big flaw in our democracy is the power of big business - in particular the coal and gas industries. As the Podcast Hot Mess reported just last week, for over thirty years those industries have deliberately muddied the waters by funding false scientific research to throw doubt on the science of climate change. They also currently have three former executives as senior staff in the PMs office. This has slowed or stalled sensible, rational market based responses to ever growing climatic impacts on human society. The results for many small businesses across Australia will be dramatic. We’ll start to feel them in the next decade, with more profound effects by 2040. There will be lower commercial fish stocks for our commercial fishers, longer more frequent droughts for our farmers, and the probable disappearance of meaningful winter snow in the alpine regions. All of that is devastating for small businesses across those regions. What can we do about it? Ban all corporate political donations. Disclose all individual donations in real time Mandate that all parliamentary staffers paid for with public money must be career public servants. Sam Stovall, chief investment strategist at CFRA Research, expects the market to stay strong in 2020 noting that be believes politicians can go beyond settling the trade dispute with China to give stocks a boost. Stovall says he would not be surprised to see tax cut measures -- proposed if not enacted -- that get investors excited that the bull market can keep running into 2021 or 2022. Also on the show, Buck Klintworth of Chase Investment Counsel talks optimistically about the market's technicals, Jeremy Goff of Tortoise Advisors discusses interval funds and the benefits of using them as opposed to traditional closed-end fund investments, and Stephen Dodson of the Bretton Fund talks value investing in the Market Call. 

This week on The NAVigator, Jeremy Goff, managing director at Tortoise Advisors, discusses how investors can use interval funds -- which have less liquidity than the standard closed-end fund -- to add structure and diversification to a portfolio. Goff compares traditional closed-end funds, as well as hedge funds, to interval offerings, noting that the reduced liquidity of an interval fund often pays off by allowing managers to pursue higher-risk strategies without any danger of investor flight

Welcome to the show Jeremy. How to communicate clearly Communicating is ultimately about getting someone to do something for you or NOT getting them to do. That’s personal AND business. What’s the DO WHAT? What do I have to do? That’s the meaning of the communication? Are you trying to convince someone? Email is the default and people are becoming lazy with the way they say in emails, the tone, the structure, This is easy to fix – you just need to remember that people can’t see your face. You can imply the word please when communicating verbally but implicitly need to. Say it in an email Are the people you’re talking to made to feel comfortable. The starting point should be what you’re familiar with. As we were just discussing… as per previous emails. This makes a connection. Email strategies: Use short sentences – fewer than 25 words Sentence 1 – sets the context - why are we talking about this? Sentence 2 – Why now? The timing Sentence 3 – question/statement which leads to sentence 4 Sentence 4 – what are we trying to achieve? Get to the key message within 4th sentence in 3 points max People – internal: Different to clients, recognise there will be various WAYS to communicate - Toolbox talks, WIP, slack conversation Have you made a conscious decision about how to communicate with your internal people. Understand you need to be flexible because of time sensitivity. Elevator/verbal/ Conversations communication Yes, it might be non-planned, and you need to be quick on your feet BUT if you stick to the rules. Lead them to the end point by making them feel comfortable. Context trigger - Why are we talking about this now? What are we doing moving forward Here’s the plan or information How to give a good presentation – the 5 Slide Rule How not to bore your audience and be invited back! What you’re presenting is irrelevant Start & Finish Slide & Agenda (the leads of the 5 slides) Why only 5? Short attention spans – capture, get to key message Set them free from your own powerpoint and leave them wanting more info What to include in the slides The top of the slide is NOT the heading; it’s a lead In your 5 slides the “leads” should make a 25 word sentence on what the presentation is about logically from beginning to end. Talk to images not words. Never read off the slide. You SHOULD be able to say what you need. With images/graphs/pictures (can cheat using fly-in images on the slide) But what if there’s detail? That’s what backup slides are for! Anticipate the questions and have the answers in backup slides Timing – only use HALF for presentations and the rest for This changes the energy because you’re energetically moving through the material and this might end early! Questions? YES!
