TOGETHER GROUP QUESTIONSRead 1 Cor. 8:1-13. What stands out to you in this passage? What is the Word of God saying to us?"Knowledge puffs up, but love builds up." How does this idea challenge our understanding of spiritual growth? How can our pursuit of knowledge lead to pride, and to balance this, how can love change your entire approach?Reflect on a time when your knowledge or opinions caused someone to stumble. How did love influence your response or behavior in that situation? How can we practice humility and love in disagreements or differences of opinion? What does it mean to "practice love over personal rights"? Can you think of a specific example where choosing love meant giving up a personal right or preference? How do our opinions or actions sometimes unintentionally cause harm to fellow believers? What steps can we take to ensure our words and choices reflect grace and care rather than judgment or insensitivity?Discuss this statement: "Sinning against others is sinning against Christ." How does this influence how we treat fellow believers? How might this truth impact our approach to disagreements or differences in the body of Christ?Considering the main point, that love for Christ and others should guide our knowledge and actions... how can we practically ensure that love remains our primary focus in daily life? What specific steps or attitudes can we adopt to reflect God's love more consistently?
Why doesn't freedom from law mean freedom to sin? In this episode of Light + Truth, John Piper opens Romans 7:1–6 to show how the risen Christ creates new hearts that bear real fruit.

Summary In this sermon, Dr. Michael Easley unpacks the challenging theological argument Paul makes in Romans 3:1-8. He begins by exploring the question, “What advantage is there to being a Jew?” Paul acknowledges the Jews' privileged status as recipients of God's oracles, the trustworthy Scriptures, and the covenant people through whom Christ would come. However, Paul also confronts objections regarding human unfaithfulness and God's righteousness. If many Jews are unfaithful, does that mean God is unfaithful? Paul emphatically denies this, asserting that God's faithfulness stands firm even when humans fail. Dr. Easley outlines four key objections Paul addresses: the significance of religion, faithfulness, righteousness, and truth. Some argue that human unrighteousness somehow glorifies God's righteousness, or that sinning more might enhance God's glory. Paul condemns such thinking as blasphemous and dangerous. The heart of the message is that God's righteousness and faithfulness are unchanging, regardless of human failure. Believers today hold the same “oracles of God” in Scripture and in Christ, entrusted with a living Word that calls for faithful response. Dr. Easley challenges listeners to cherish and live out this divine trust faithfully. Takeaways: God entrusted the Jews with His oracles, giving them great religious advantage. Human unfaithfulness never negates God's perfect faithfulness. God's righteousness remains true even when humans are unrighteous. Sinning cannot be justified as a means to glorify God—it is condemned. The gospel reveals the mystery of how God declares sinners righteous in Christ. Believers today are entrusted with the living Word of God, calling for faithful stewardship. To read the book of Romans, click here. Click here for other Michael Easley Sermons.
Fr. Anthony Amato is the Pastor of St. Peter's Parish in Clifton Springs, New York. He was ordained as a priest in June of 2017 by Bishop Salvatore Matano of the Diocese of Rochester, New York. In Today's Show: I've heard Father Ripperger say that it is a sin to pray with Protestants. Is that true? I try to get all of our family's cooking salt blessed, but I realize that sometimes food that has blessed salt in it gets thrown away (or given to our pets as scraps). Is this sinful? Do you know or have you heard of anyone in the 7th mansion from St Teresa of Avila's writings where they have entered spiritual marriage with God? Why are so few seemingly able to reach such heights? Are we too attached to worldly things and lack trust in God? Where can I find the prayers that are said during Mass so I can follow along? I'm a new convert! Should I be concerned when my priest writes or professes overtly political messages? I was reflecting on my teenage years and how I often disobeyed my parents and caused them much worry. I have confessed those sins, but wonder about acts of reparation? My folks are deceased. Is the sin of curiosity a mortal sin if it involves impurity? Like if you went somewhere knowing you'd see someone wearing immodest clothing? I see a lot of different views on the end times and a lot of the Protestant views seem unbiblical. The Catechism's teaching is also somewhat unclear and leaves room for interpretation. What do you think? Even though I've been baptized, I'm concerned there may be spiritual consequences from my grandfather's Freemasonic oaths or affiliations that need to be addressed. Would you recommend that I speak with my parish priest or diocesan office about this? Is there any time that a Catholic would be allowed to attend a Protestant Church? For example, to attend a wedding or baptism of a friend who is not Catholic but has invited someone who is a practicing Catholic? My Protestant friend says that Jesus is the one “Mediator”, as He said that no one comes to the Father except through Me. My friend says that is why we Catholics should not pray to the saints. How should I respond to that argument? Recently we attended a mass in which the priest spent a lot of time outside the sanctuary, such as walking around to tell stories and jokes prior to the opening prayer, moving around the church while delivering the homily, coming down to the congregation to hold hands during the Our Father, and shaking hands with nearly every attendee during the sign of peace. If priests know that such practices are prohibited, why do they continue to do it? Why does it seem like healing and miracles stopped? And what about demons today? How do we know Jesus is the Messiah? My brother isn't sure about the Trinity. What can I do? What should we do when we sin? Ask God for forgiveness and then forget about it?
Friend, if there is some portion of Scripture that strikes a chord of awesome fear and deep respect for God – then good. Fear of the Lord is supposed to be a deterrent; a holy fear of God that's meant to dissuade you from sinning. -------- Thank you for listening! Nothing is more important than the condition of your soul, and this timeless work offers thought-provoking insight and biblical wisdom for those who wish to store up treasure in heaven. Originally written by Puritan pastor William Dyer (1632–1696), The Strait Way to Heaven presents twenty biblical principles that lead to a life of deep repentance, unwavering faith in Christ, and true holiness. With deep insights drawn from Scripture, Dyer urges readers to forsake sin, embrace righteousness, and walk steadfastly in obedience to God. This revised and updated edition preserves the heart of Dyer's message while making his rich teachings more accessible to today's readers. Written with passionate urgency and deep pastoral care, this book serves as both a convicting call to self-examination and an encouraging guide to the joy of a life fully surrendered to the Lord. Dyer's words remind us that holiness is the only true path to happiness and that the narrow road of faith leads to eternal life. Whether you are seeking a deeper relationship with Christ or a better understanding of the Christian walk, The Strait Way to Heaven will challenge and inspire you to live with purpose, integrity, and unshakable devotion to God. About the Editor Ron Metheny is a Baptist pastor and Christian author. His published works include: Why, God? Why?! (Understanding Habakkuk), 'Twas the Devotional before Christmas: Daily Readings for Advent, and Echoes of Thunder (A Collection of Christian Quotes and Godly Wit). He lives in Kentucky.
Fr. John Brancich, FSSP is the pastor of St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Nashua, New Hampshire. He was ordained into the Priestly Fraternity of Saint Peter in 2004. In Today's Show: Does invincible ignorance only include those who have never heard of Jesus? Is it a sin to have hatred for Eve? Does the Church elevate marriage and forget about single people? How do I know if I'm sinning? Why are the Psalms numbered differently in older translations? If I forget to say a novena, do I have to start over? Can Catholics still receive communion if they don't agree with Vatican II and the synod? When is a person too old to enter seminary? Does Father Brancich have any favorite Popes? If foster parents say not to do something, but we forget and do it anyways, could that be a mortal sin? I recently heard a priest say that there is salvation outside the Catholic Church. Is this heresy? Scripture Reading: 2 Samuel 18 When David gave way to his lust for Bathsheba and his pride to cover his act through murder, there were some things he had not considered, namely the long term consequences of sin. Sinning against the living God is a more serious matter than we usually think it is and the dark effects of sin are both sure and destructive. David's sin had terrible effects that he had not considered in the passions of his heart. First, his sin had an effect on God's name. “. . . by this deed you have given occasion to the enemies of the LORD to blaspheme . . .” (2 Sam 12:14). Second, his sin had an effect on others: Bathsheba, Uriah, Amnon, Tamar, Absalom. God told David of these results when He said, “Now therefore, the sword shall never depart from your house, because you have despised Me and have taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be your wife” (2 Sam 12:10). Third, David's sin had a long term, destructive effect on himself. In 2 Samuel 18 we see David in utter anguish and sorrow over the death of his son Absalom, 12 years after his sin with Bathsheba. “O my son Absalom, my son, my son Absalom! Would I had died instead of you, O Absalom, my son, my son! . . . And the king covered his face and cried out with a loud voice, "O my son Absalom, O Absalom, my son, my son!" (2 Sam 18:33; 19:4). Let us take to heart the stern warnings in the Bible concerning sin's consequences. “He who sows iniquity will reap vanity” (Prov 22:8). “Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, this he will also reap” (Gal 6:7).

Hey! How's it going? Welcome back to the show. TONIGHT, The Last of Us had a big episode, Sinners was freakin nuts (we're likely going to spoil both of those so just a warning!), and most importantly, we're gonna spend 2 hours talking exclusively about the upcoming Weezer movie with Keanu Reeves. We'll discuss our theories, the casting, the possibility of the jumping dog from the Raditude album cover making a cameo, and whether or not it's going to TAKE THE STUDIO SYSTEM DOWN.
To expect women and men of flesh and blood to live lives of ethical perfection is to expect too much. Lapses in judgment, ignorance, vice, and sin are inescapable parts of the human condition. Each year, on Yom Kippur, the Jewish Day of Atonement, we recite the Al Het prayer, enumerating over 40 sins that we have committed. Sinning is natural, or, as the poet Alexander Pope famously put it, “to err is human, to forgive divine.” And there's a deep truth to that, for while error and vice are natural to the human condition, religion has introduced into the moral landscape the human imitation of God's compassion that releases us, and allows us to release one another, from the crushing burden of guilt and vice. That religious innovation is forgiveness, and it plays a central role in the ethical life of Jews and Christians. A society without forgiveness, in which moral stain can never be wiped away, in which no mechanism for absolution exists, is a society that will grow fearful, fragmented, feeble, and frail. A society that is properly calibrated to the inescapable truths of human sin, and also has an instrument that absolves the sinner and and enable him or her to rejoin society, is resilient. A few years ago, American was bound up in a spate of so-called cancellations in which public figures stood accused of some wrong action, wrong statement, or wrong thought, and were deemed unfit for employment or standing in society. And, in the progressive circles that led these efforts to purify the public arena, no apology would suffice. No cleansing was sufficient to remove the stain: once a bigot, always a bigot. It was around that time that a group of Jewish and Christian theologians began meeting to discuss the idea of forgiveness. Over the course of several years of study, reading, and discussion, a statement emerged. “Forgiveness: A Statement by Jews and Christians” was published in the February 2025 issue of First Things magazine. But of course, something of civilizational significance happened while this group convened, and that was the October 7 Hamas attacks, and the adulation of the attackers by American and European activists. In the face of such evil, could forgiveness be offered? Should it be? What are the limitations on forgiveness and what are the moral obligations on the part of the penitent seeking forgiveness? Two of the statement's signatories, Tikvah's chief education officer Rabbi Mark Gottlieb and the Villanova University professor Anna Moreland, join Mosaic's editor Jonathan Silver to discuss these and related themes.
Today our guest is Maggie Rowe, former writer on Arrested Development and author of Sin Bravely, a book about her experiences with moral scrupulosity, or sin-focused OCD. We talk a lot about OCD on this show, so here's a guest who wrote an entire book about growing up with religious obsessions! She'll tell us about her first obsessions about what was and was not sin, how she started to analyze the Bible with a critical mind to try to understand how to avoid hell, and how her parents tried to help but her church leaders didn't understand OCD and made it worse. We'll talk about the compulsions she would engage in to make sure she was being the right amount of righteous, how she checked herself into a treatment facility for Christians, the incorrect diagnosis of bulimia she received, and how she finally got diagnosed with moral scrupulosity and began getting the treatment she actually needed.
