You SHOULD love your neighbor? Or you SHALL love your neighbor? The difference between "should" and "shall" might seem minuscule at first, but according to Jesus a lot rests on the difference between those two words. "Should" gives us an option to love our neighbors. Where as "shall" is a commandment to love. How can Jesus' powerful statement about the greatest commandment transform your view of those who live around us?

How to Get Crystal Clear on Your Fitness Motivation w/ Christa Shelton

If you struggle with staying motivated when engaging with exercise, you are not alone. Starting a fitness plan is very exciting initially, but when reality sets in about the amount of time it can take to see results, especially as our bodies change through the different phases of life, it can be a bit disheartening. This is why I have brought the ultimate motivator, Christa Shelton, to the show today. Key Takeaways If You Want To Get Clear On Your Fitness Motivation, You Should:  Adapt your training schedule to where your body is at right now in this phase of your life Get clear on why you want to accomplish a goal and if it is coming from yourself or outside conditioning Harness the confidence you get from strength training into all areas of your life For The Love of Motivation Christa is a certified personal trainer and behavioral change specialist who is passionate about helping her clients use motivation as a vehicle for long-term success. She loves helping women in mid-life feel confident with their movement practices and get to the ‘why' behind their goals. She has combined her enthusiasm for fitness and her love of motivating people into a purpose that serves her clients, herself, and her community. Feeling Confident in Movement at Every Age When getting back into fitness, especially if some years have passed since the last time we engaged with that exercise, we all tend to compare what we can do now to what we could do back then. But the truth is, how you are training now should be different than how you were training 5 or 10 years ago because your body needs different things. By being tuned into what your body is saying to you, you can get over the barriers of movement and learn to embrace the changes your body is going through. Know Your "Why" The best way to stay motivated is to be confident in the ‘why' behind your goal. Christa uses strength training as a gateway to getting into your internal mindset and figuring out what each unique person needs at that moment.  When you can own and feel good about your intentions and feel secure in what your body can do, that confidence translates into all areas of your life. There is nothing wrong with wanting to be strong. While the definition of the word strong may change from person to person, the positivity that comes from feeling assured in your body's abilities is universal. Are you ready to stop procrastinating and start using your mindset to fuel your motivation? Share what you loved most about Christa's approach with me in the comments on the episode page. In This Episode Common fears and barriers surrounding women holding women back from getting started on a fitness journey (14:06) How to address the changes in your body mid-life and adapt your training program accordingly (22:54) The role of mindset and listening to your body when doing any type of training (25:21) Tips for overcoming your mindset challenges when it comes to strength training (28:51) How strength training can help you tap into your motivation and create inner transformation (36:45) Quotes “Because I am walking this journey, it really compelled me to really immerse myself in how we are looking at aging and how we are feeling about our bodies as we age. And that's really what made me want to make the shift to really focus here.” (8:39) “Generally speaking, it still takes work and time to build muscle. So to think you could go from where you are to somehow ever get to ‘The Rock' or anywhere near that is in itself a huge misconception.” (18:40) “I am very much more the type of trainer that is going to talk to you about how you are feeling, specifically that day when I see you, and then we are going to move according to that.” (23:44) “Getting down deep and relating to people on a human level is not something that I feel is really talked about as much as it should be for people coming into this work. Because when you are dealing with people's bodies, I feel that that is a very personal space, and it needs to be treated with the utmost respect.” (27:46) “What are your motivations behind the things that you do? I think it is important to dig into that so that you can really understand if your motivation for doing something is based on conditioning and messaging that you have been getting... or is it something that you have a clear mindset about this approach and why you feel it is important.” (32:23) Featured on the Show Join the Group Strength Nutrition Program Waitlist Here Coaching With Christa Website Follow Christa on Instagram Steph Gaudreau Website Check out the full show notes here! Its history, its dreary present. The tendency towards what Dean Kissick calls "zombie figuration" and what separates the brilliance of Matthew Barney from the average new media artist. Harder to Kill Radio
Are You Lifting Heavy Enough (and Other Common Strength Training Questions)

Harder to Kill Radio

There are six common questions I hear all the time about lifting weights. So, I decided to put them into an episode with some simple answers for you so that you have a resource that you can come back to time and time again. If you are looking for answers to common questions I hear about strength training; this is the episode for you. Key Takeaways If You Want To Embrace The Benefits of Strength Training, You Should:  Realize that what is ‘heavy' is different for each person, and you should focus on adding enough of a load that is challenging for you Create goals that are focused on what your body can do, not the number on the bathroom scale Take care of your body through generous recovery time and exercises that do not involve weights It's All Relative Questions like ‘am I lifting heavy enough?', ‘am I too old to start lifting weights?', or ‘how soon can I expect to see results?', are very nuanced. The short answer is, everybody's body is different and will look different even if doing the same exercise.  It is about finding a combination of weight lifting and other exercises that feel right for your unique body. What is ‘heavy' is relative to each person and can change over time. Consistency and progressive overload are the keys to a long game mentality needed when strength training. The Many Benefits of Strength Training I know for sure that strength training can give you something to think about besides shrinking your body. Having goals that are only focused on achieving a certain number on the scale or an aesthetic look are not sustainable.  Lifting weights can help you stop focusing on the scale, promote healthy muscle mass, improve your bone density, and boost your metabolism. These are goals that can have a huge impact on your overall health but cannot be measured by the number on the scale. Strength training can help you reconnect with a sense of what your body can do, not what it looks like. Have you ever asked one of these common questions? How did my answer hold up to what you have been told in the past? Share your experiences with me in the comments section of the episode page. In This Episode How to know if you are lifting heavy enough (3:40) How often you should be lifting every week (7:29) How to know if lifting weights will help you feel better about yourself (9:53) Why you should still consider lifting weights even if you do other sports (14:17) Why it is never too late to start lifting weights (17:52) How long it will take for you to experience results (22:20) Quotes “Generally speaking, you want to think about grooving in the main functional movement patterns, which are push, pull, hinge, squat, and weighted carries; those are what the Made Strong program is built off of.” (8:24) “Lifting weights gives you something besides shrinking your body, or the bathroom scale, to focus on.” (11:59) “If you lift weights two or three times a week, it will make you better at that sport, period.” (15:07) “To efficiently build and maintain your muscle and bones and keep your metabolism humming along… the answer is lift weights.” (21:52) “Please focus on some kind of goal that goes beyond what you weigh or exactly having some kind of aesthetic look. Because it is going to be far easier to sustain your work towards what you can do, or developing a new skill, or building your strength in a specific lift, it's going to be a lot more motivating and a lot easier to stick to that than when you are not seeing the number on the scale go in the direction that you want it to go.” (26:26) Featured on the Show Sign Up For Private Coaching Here Join the Waitlist for Group Coaching Here Steph Gaudreau Website Check out the full show notes here! Facebook, Instagram, Linked In, Pinterest, and YouTube. Transcript: What do you want more than anything else in the world for your child? To be happy, right?!  Is that what you said in your brain.  If it is, you apart of the majority of parents out there.  I am here to tell you that although this is natural- it also could be a problem! Why?  Because a lot of us take this “wish” for our kids to extremes and the result is:             Enabling, Hover parents, and anxiety and stress in our kids AND for ourselves! I am picked this topic this week because we are approaching the holiday season and this season is especially ridiculed with “expectations and the need to be happy”.  So although it is natural to want happiness for your child, you need to step back and consider the consequences.  Let's break this down a little further.  What do we really mean when we say “we want our kids happy?”  Well, for most of us- this means we don't want our kids to experience pain.    As a parent, you can step in and help your child avoid physical pain, however, you can not protect them from emotional pain- nor should you want to!  Life is full of emotional pain.  It is how we live.  Having emotional pain and sadness teaches us to be grateful for happiness.  If you are trying to prevent your child from experiencing emotional pain, then you are also robbing them of living and learning from it.  One of my favorite examples of this is from Walt Disney's Nemo.  Dory is so wise in the movie when she is talking about Nemo to Marlen.  Marlen is Nemo's dad and a classic hover parent.  She says to him, “You can't ever let anything happen to him.  Then nothing would ever happen to him!” You have to let your child experience life and part of that experience is emotional pain.  When you think of it that way, you realize that protecting kids from pain is unrealistic.  In fact, it is doing them a disservice!   The best lessons in life are learned through pain.  I am sure that you have had a painful experience in your life and when you recovered from it, you were wiser and better for it.   Maybe it was a heartache, maybe you got caught doing something… whatever it was- it was the EXPERIENCE that made you LEARN and then you grew from that experience.   As a teacher, I can tell you with all certainty that we don't learn best from books or theory- we learn from experience.    So is it unrealistic to hope for no pain for our children or to shelter them too much?   I am not saying that you let them do whatever they want- yes, boundaries are important, but there is a balance between protecting them and letting them live and make their own choices.    Furthermore, IF it is unrealistic to expect no pain in their lives then we, as parents, are setting OURSELVES up for disappointment and heartache when we try to overprotect them.  This is a parenting expectation that you can't win.   So let go of this unrealistic expectation.   I am going to go one step further and suggest that you teach your kids that pain, failure, heartache, and disappointment in their life is absolutely NORMAL.    Some of the depression that exists in our young people today stems from unrealistic expectations of how their life should be.   With social media only glorifying and portraying the “good” moments- our young people are being manipulated to think that their life should be that good. They should look that good, feel that good, be that happy…  If you have signed up for my newsletter, Big Impact,  you got my email about this.  Life isn't that great.  Lol, Social media influence is stupid and completely fake!  Dr. Shefali Tsabary suggests that as parents we should teach our kids not to gain any self-worth from external success.  She says our children should not base any part of who they are on the external.  This sounds easy, but it isn't.   We live in a society that gives a ribbon to everyone who participates because we think the ribbon will teach the kid that they are valued on the team.  We pack our kid's schedules with activity after activity because society has told us that they need to be well-rounded, high achievers, and good at everything.  How stressful for our young people!  This artificially induced pressure is ridiculous!  Stop making your kids feel overburdened!  It's ok.  So what can you do about this?  Here are your Impactful Parent tips: Start by sitting down with your kids and asking them, - how do you really feel about ________ Football, flute lessons, whatever the activities are. Did they pick those activities or did you pick those activities for them? Ask them,  If you could quit that activity and try something new, would you?  What would you try?   LISTEN to your kids.  Sometimes we project our likes and desires on our kids (which is a whole different topic for another day) but be aware of the question, “Is my kid doing this because they want to or because they feel like it is expected of them?”  When they are having emotional pain, here are your dos and don'ts Don't:  Don't ask what happened… yet. Do:  Instead, start with empathy.  Say something like,  I see you are upset.  I am just going to sit right here and be with you for a bit.  If you want to talk about why you're upset, I am here to listen.  Then just sit and be there.  Listen.  Validate their feelings. Don't:  Don't say ‘You SHOULD have done this…”  You should have done that… This turns kids off- especially teenagers.  You can process better choices later AFTER they have had time to process their feelings.  Give them one thing to focus on at a time.  They don't want your advice at that moment.  They want someone to hear them! Do: Stay calm- no matter WHY they are upset. Don't: Don't get upset yourself and make judgments about the situation.  This is really bad.  If you start saying stuff like, “I knew that friend was horrible” or getting emotionally charged yourself, they won't be able to calm down AND you will be digging yourself a hole when they will be friends again with that person next week.  Much like when your child was a toddler and they fell- if you react like “OH NO…. and scream- then they will scream.  But if you are calm, then they learn to fall and remain calm.   Even teenagers are looking to you for guidance on how they should be controlling their emotions.  Well, thank you for joining me today.   I hope my message was impactful to a few of you out there that may be needed to hear that message.  You are an impactful parent. Parenting is hard and you got this!

[Intro: 8:31] Roy Scranton, bestselling author of ‘We're Doomed. Now What?’ and ‘Learning to Die in the Anthropocene,’ joins me to discuss his recent op-ed in the New York Times, ‘I’ve Said Goodbye to ‘Normal.’ You Should, Too.’ We begin this interview with Roy discussing the connections he draws between two of the major subjects he has written extensively about over the course of his career as an author: war and climate change. Having been deployed to Iraq while serving in the US Army during the US invasion and occupation of that nation in 2003, Roy provides some insights into the reasons why he volunteered to participate in that horrific conflict, and how that experience ultimately led him to write extensively on anthropogenic climate change, both from the hard scientific perspective, and from the deeper philosophical perspective as well. I then ask him to respond to scientist and author Michael Mann's characterization of Scranton and his work ("Scranton is the ultimate doomist" (https://bit.ly/3dwHRG1)), and whether this (mis)characterization actually aligns with what he is trying to accomplish with his work, exploring the existential questions that inevitably come up when one looks at what climate and environmental crises presents for the future. Has it been a while since you've worked out, but you have a newly found motivation to get going? Are you diving into a fitness program only to be so sore afterward that it does not feel like it was worth it? Getting back into exercise after the crazy year we had is a great thing, but it needs to be approached in the right way to make sure it is sustainable for you. Key Takeaways If You Want To Get Back into Exercise Without Feeling Wrecked, You Should:  Commit to a daily movement practice rather than a super intense workout that hurts your body for the rest of the week Modulate both the intensity of your workout and the volume to meet yourself where you are at Take care of your tissues and allow for proper recovery to avoid getting hurt Ditch The ‘All or Nothing’ Mentality When getting back into movement and working out, the first step is to get rid of the ‘all or nothing’ mindset that fitness culture has ingrained in us. Instead of going so hard once a week that you have to ‘toilet trust fall’ for the rest of the week, focusing on a daily movement practice is a much more sustainable and enjoyable way to ease yourself back into exercise. Your body needs support when getting back into movement, which is why you need to integrate taking care of yourself into your daily routine. If you are ready to get reacquainted with a daily commitment to move your body, however, that looks and feels for you, a sustainable approach is the best way to honor your body's signals. Start Where You Are Now We are coming out of a whole year of the world being flipped upside down. The amount of stress you have been under, your daily routine, and your sleep can all affect how ready your body is to get active again. The high-intensity workouts that you may have done in the past might not suit your body's current needs.  It is essential that you modulate your intensity and volume of workouts and listen to the signals your body is sending you to properly heal your tissues and address the issues you are feeling. By listening to your body and taking the time to properly recover, you can get active again without wrecking yourself so that you can be more consistent, enjoy the benefits of your workout, and have fun while still challenging yourself. Physical activity can be a fun, challenging, and positive experience if you approach it the right way. By shifting your mindset away from the ‘all or nothing’ mentality, modulating your intensity and volume, and focusing on your tissue recovery through nutrition and awareness, you can harness your good intentions and get active again. Are you ready to take your motivation to get active again and implement it in a safe, healthy, and fun way? Share what your daily movement commitment is with me in the comments section on the episode page.   In This Episode Why you should focus on a daily commitment to move your body rather than ‘going hard’ (7:44) The importance of modulating your intensity and volume when getting back into movement (11:01) How to take care of your tissues and think about your recovery as you start to move more (17:12) What to think about when listening to your bodies signals in order to get more active again (21:58) Resources and recommendations to help you get active again and meet yourself where you are at (23:20)   Quotes “I want you to start thinking about movement being more of a daily commitment instead of a once-a-week smash fest which then you can't move for the next five days and your body is so painfully sore that every step you take feels super painful.” (9:02) “We have been taught by fitness culture in general that if it is not intensity level 10, that it was no good and we got no benefit from it. Which is absolutely not true.” (12:10) “You need to think about what is leading up to me getting more active again and are there things I should probably deal with with my body?” (21:08) “What I am seeing a lot in the community is still an under-eating situation. It's like an under-eating, under-recovery situation, and that is not going to help with your recovery.” (28:29) “Recovery is a part of the process, and if you are coming out of a period of less activity, it might be something you need to think a little bit more about.” (30:06)   Featured on the Show Food Freedom Mini-Course Join the CORE 4 Program Waitlist Doc Jen Fit Website The Ready State Website Rom Wod Website Steph Gaudreau Website Check out the full show notes here! Ask David What do you do when someone won’t stop asking questions? Hello David, It’s been a while since I’ve emailed you, but that’s because I’ve been doing really well thanks to you! I started a new job 3-1/2 months ago, & this woman seemed to take to me right from the start. It was nice at first having someone to talk to etc, but it has quickly turned bad. She sits in the cubicle right next to me. All day long she talks to me asking me questions. What did I do after work? Who was I with? How long was I gone? What did my husband do? And on & on. It feels like she’s interrogating me because the questions never stop. I’m trying to get more vague with my answers hoping if will deter the conversation, but no luck. It really becomes distracting at times & then other times it just feels like she’s being nosy & freaks me out. I just want her to leave me alone! I think this would be a good opportunity to use the 5 secrets of effective communication, but I’m struggling. Could you help? Thank you, Brittany Hi Brittany, Will send to Rhonda for an Ask David. But a simple approach would be to tell her that you admire her and appreciate her interest, but that you sometimes find the questions distracting from doing your work. Perhaps you could sit down with her for lunch or something, and then use your five secrets skills. Using the relationship journal, you could write down one thing she said to you, and exactly what you said next. Then we can see exactly what you are doing that is fueling the problem! I've attached one, and you could send it to us after you have completed Steps 1 and 2. David Thank you for the reply! It really made my day. I attached the relationship journal. It was actually more helpful than I thought it would be for this situation. Once I was able to think of a good example, I realized that maybe my lack of inquiry or showing interest in her is causing her to ask me all these questions. Although if I ask her more about herself, I don't know if it would result in her talking even more? Hard to say. Thanks for your help, and I appreciate your thoughts on my relationship journal. -Brittany Hello, Wanted to give you an update on how it went using the five secrets. First thing Monday morning my coworker started right up with the questions. I used the five secrets & said something similar to what I wrote to you. She apologized for bothering me, & things have been great all week! She actually brought in headphones & has been listening to music now. And there’s no tension or animosity between us which was my fear initially. We still chat here & there & are friendly. Thanks again! -Brittany How can a pastoral counselor get training in TEAM-CBT? Dear Doctor David, I am a pastor from South Africa, married to an Australian, living in Dubai :) I was struggling with mild depression & came across your book "feeling good" and read it & applied all your techniques & it has been life-changing - THANK YOU! What surprised me most was the simplicity and effectiveness of the exercises. I believe that much of what you teach is life skills everyone should have! I wish I was taught these things when I was younger! Over the years I have helped people, from all walks of life - inmates, students, business people, etc., but primarily from a spiritual perspective. I believe I can be more effective and help so many more out there if I learn how to apply your exercises to others. I would love to train in TEAM and learn how to apply these techniques with the people I minister to, but I am not a psychologist or certified as per your requirements. I realize practice and critical feedback is paramount in order to get really good in TEAM. Please advise me on an alternative route. Any help with this regard would be highly appreciated! Thanking you in advance. Yours sincerely, Gareth Noble Hi Pastor Noble, Sure there is a certification program at the Feeling Good Institute. I believe pastoral counselors would be very welcome. They offer many online introductory classes in TEAM-CBT. Check our my free weekly Feeling Good Podcasts, too. I will include your question, with your permission, on an Ask David Podcast. I also offer a free depression class on my website, and about to post an anxiety class too, also free. There are tons of resources, almost all free, on my website, www.feelinggood.com. You can check out my website page from time to time for online workshops. Dr. Angela Krumm angela@feelinggoodinstitute.com is head of the certification program at FGI, which is www.feelinggoodinstitute.com. Angela and I are both PKs (Pastor’s kids)! All the best, David Is love an adult human need? Rhonda said that people in the TEAM certification listserve thought they heard David say that love is not an adult human need. Is this true? David comments on hearing Dr. Beck say that decades ago, in one of Dr. Beck’s weekly training groups at U. Penn, and what he (David) discovered. What’s the best training program to learn TEAM-CBT? David and Rhonda, I hope this note finds you well. I'm writing for a few reasons. The first is to thank you for your podcast and related resources. I found your podcast and started listening at the beginning of COVID-19 (mid-March) because I was feeling acute anxiety. The T.E.A.M. approach and your teaching are such an amazing gifts. The positive reframing in particular is truly life changing and revolutionary for me. Considering what my negative thoughts show about me that's positive and awesome and then finding the cognitive distortions has provided me such relief. I have been so excited about T.E.A.M. therapy that I often discuss it with my husband, friends, and family. I really loved David's comment in the most recent podcast that good therapy isn't evangelizing; rather it's letting the patient define problems and goals within his/her own values. I also liked your comment that doing therapy well is like an artform or a dance- that's such a beautiful sentiment, and I've been able to see the conversational "dances" you perform in the amazing, transformative, empathic live therapy sessions with Michael, Rhonda, Sarah, and others. These sessions have often brought tears to my eyes. This brings me to my second reason for writing. Listening to the podcast has been transformative for me in another way- it's made me seriously consider becoming a therapist myself. I have considered this possibility over the years, but now that I'm familiar with the T.E.A.M therapy approach and can see how helpful it is, I'm excited to explore this path more. I have a B.A. in psychology so I would need additional education- do you have suggestions for masters programs that you think would provide good alignment with the T.E.A.M. approach? I live in Charlottesville, Virginia and have two young children, so a local or online program may be the best bet for me. Thanks in advance for any ideas you may have. All the best to you, Molly Hurt Thanks, Molly. We can read your wonderful email on an Ask David if that is okay with you, but here is the quick answer. In graduate school, you don’t typically learn much that is useful. It is more getting a license to practice, then you learn from mentors, workshops, etc. The FeelingGoodInstitute.com has training and certification programs, including 12 week beginner classes in TEAM that are excellent. The whole area of coaching is emerging now too, and the certification is rather informal. If you get a degree like a masters degree in social work online, and then get licensed to do therapy, that is one approach, but there are many ways to get certified—counselor, psy d degree, marriage and family therapy, and so forth. So in short, I would, personally, find some way—the easiest way—to get certified so you can legally do therapy. But concentrate on learning TEAM as the tool to use. In California, as an aside, anyone can call themselves a “psychotherapist,” but you need the degree and license to call yourself a “psychologist.” Good luck, and thanks again! david Why are should statements considered distortions? Thanks for your quick and helpful reply. It's useful to have a better sense for how to prioritize my time and training. I'm excited to continue to explore T.E.A.M. therapy! And you are welcome to read my email on the podcast, thanks for asking. If I may, one other question for you: how do you recommend someone defeat "should" statements when his/her behaviors aren't healthy or beneficial? For example, "I should not overeat when anxious" or "I should not procrastinate" or "I should not be impatient with my daughter." I understand that saying "should" in these cases adds pressure and can lead to shame, but I don't see the distortion in these statements. In other words, these statements may not be helpful to a patient, but how are they not 100% true? I would appreciate any additional guidance you can offer on what I find to be the most difficult cognitive distortion! Thanks again to both of you for generously sharing your loving and kind approach to helping people deal with their problems and feel better. The impact you're having is profound. I love listening to you empathize with patients- it makes me strive for building an even more loving connection with my husband and daughters, as well as others in my life. Best, Molly Hi Molly, You may want to listen to podcast #205 pm Should Statements. You can also find a lot in my books, like Feeling Good, which you may have already read. There is also a chapter on how to crush should statements in my new book, Feeling Great, which will be released on September 15, 2020. Shoulds are distortions because they are not valid. It is not true that you “should not overeat when anxious.” You SHOULD overeat when anxious because it is very appealing, tasty, and makes you feel better. A correct statement would be, “It would be preferable if I did not overeat when anxious.” This statement removes the shame and pressure, while honoring your goal. There are three correct uses of should: the moral should (thou shalt not kill), the legal should (you should not drive 90 miles an hour because you’ll get a ticket) and the laws of the universe should: this pen should fall to the floor if I drop it because of the force of gravity. But overeating when anxious is not immoral or illegal, and it does not violate the laws of the universe. So it is not a valid use of the word. There is a podcast on this, I think, and you can search for it on my website use the search function. Rhonda and David
