Journey to the Cross // The Bible that Jesus Read by Connect Church SA
In reading the Old Testament, Jesus seems to be selecting the most important verses – the verses which apply most fully to himself and his mission at that time, and the verses which he wants his hearers to understand both about him and about their own discipleship. Jesus does not simply applying Old Testament examples indiscriminately. Instead, we see him applying the Scriptures with wisdom; filling out their full meaning; reading towards mercy; and Jesus is the one who now embodies God's Word fully. He is the one through whom God has now fully spoken.
In this conversation, we dive into how Jesus read and engaged with scripture - and how that should inform how we, as his followers, approach the Bible today. It's not something I've thought about explicitly. This is a much needed conversation. My guest is Michael Pahl, author of the book "The Word Fulfilled," and he brings a really thoughtful, nuanced perspective on this topic. One of the key things that emerges is how Jesus didn't just see scripture as a flat, equal text, but rather prioritized certain passages - like the book of Isaiah - that spoke to his core mission of bringing God's love and justice to the world. Jesus didn't just memorize scripture, but read it through the lens of loving God and loving your neighbor as yourself. And that has huge implications for how we should approach the Bible. Rather than just looking for rules or proof-texts, we need to ask how the scriptures are calling us to a deeper ethic of compassion and concern for the marginalized. It's not about winning arguments, but about being transformed by the radical love that Jesus embodied. Pahl also gets into the challenges of actually living out that kind of non-violent, self-giving love in the face of a culture that often prizes power and retaliation. But he points to inspiring examples, like the civil rights movement, of how that way of Jesus can actually bring about profound social change. It's a rich, thought-provoking conversation that I think will really challenge us to rethink how we engage with the Bible. So join us. Michael Pahl is executive minister of Mennonite Church Manitoba. He has a PhD in biblical studies from the University of Birmingham in the UK. His professional journey has moved between academic teaching and congregational ministry. He previously served as lead pastor of Morden Mennonite Church and has published and edited multiple books, including The Beginning and the End: Rereading Genesis's Stories and Revelation's Visions. Kids will learn that it is important to listen to what God's Word says, but it is much more important to obey it and do what it says. This session will challenge kids to put God's words into action. We can guide them to think about specific ways they can follow God's words in how they live. Preschoolers will learn about the time Jesus read the Scriptures. In the Nazareth synagogue, Jesus read from the prophet Isaiah. He told the people that the prophet's words were about Him. We can emphasize that Jesus taught that words in the Bible scrolls told about Him and the things He would do.
Kids will learn about when Jesus read the Scriptures. In the Nazareth synagogue, Jesus read from the prophet Isaiah. He told the people that the prophet's words were fulfilled in Him. We can emphasize that Jesus taught that He is the Messiah and Savior. Preschoolers will learn about Josiah. Josiah learned about God's commands from the discovered Bible scroll. God's words in the Bible tell people what God wants them to do. People should learn and obey the Bible's words. However, people can choose to obey the Bible or choose to disregard it. The session will help preschoolers know that the Bible can help them know what is right and wrong.
Introduction A new creation! I'm Malcolm Cox. Welcome to this series on ‘A new creation'. Today, another model that may help us understand how God changes us. This week we take a look at a model of spiritual growth put forward by James Bryan Smith. By the way, I heartily recommend his book, The Good and Beautiful God. You can also find helpful articles written by him on the Renovare site. Smith's model is a variation on the model developed by Dallas Willard and Trevor Hudson in previous Quiet Time Coaching episodes. We will focus on the key difference - 'Adopting the narratives of Jesus'. His key idea is that we have a narrative in our minds about how we are doing spiritually, who God is, how he views us, what he wants from us and how we grow. However, our narratives are not always accurate. Thus, it is critically important we allow the narratives of Jesus to shape our own. "Our family, cultural and even religious narratives might have their roots in the kingdom of this world. As Christ-followers we are called to “set [our] minds on things that are above” (Colossians 3:2). Most of all, we are called to have the very mind of Jesus: “Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 2:5). Adopting Jesus' narratives is a way we come to have the mind of Christ. Once we get the right narratives in place, change will begin." The Good and Beautiful God" p26 This practice is not just about knowing the stories of Jesus but letting them reshape our very being. What does this mean? Let's break it down. 1. Look at Father God through the eyes of Jesus Read passages where Jesus speaks to God -- for example, John 11:41-42, Matthew 11:25-26, John 17:4-5 -- and meditate on what they reveal about the way he is seeing God at those moments. What narrative about God and himself is going on in the mind and heart of Jesus? Imagine you've always seen God as distant and unapproachable. But through the eyes of Jesus, you encounter a God who is loving, forgiving, and present. This new narrative can fundamentally change how you relate to God and yourself. 2. Imitate Jesus Next, let's explore imitation of Christ. Think of it as a spiritual apprenticeship. As you study Jesus' actions and attitudes, you start to reflect those in your daily life. This isn't about perfect mimicry but a heartfelt transformation where Jesus' way becomes your way. John 13.15 “I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.” When faced with a difficult situation, ask yourself: "How would Jesus respond?" This kind of active engagement with Jesus' teachings leads to real-world spiritual growth. 3. Community Engaging with Jesus' narratives is often best done in community. In a group setting, we can learn from each other, offer support, and grow together. This mirrors how Jesus taught His disciples, fostering an environment of shared learning and encouragement. Mark 8.27 “Jesus and his disciples went on to the villages around Caesarea Philippi. On the way he asked them, “Who do people say I am?”” We all see Jesus a little differently due to our varied life experiences and personalities. Conclusion When Jesus' attitudes, thinking and teachings become the lens through which we view our lives, every part of us is transformed. For Reflection When you meditate on the Scriptures showing us how Jesus viewed Father God, what changes in your view of God? How can you prevent imitating Jesus from becoming mechanical? What part does prayer have in this growth process? What do you see as the key ways community can aid your spiritual growth? Next time we will go on to look at celebrating disciplines. Your brother, Malcolm Please add your comments on this week's topic. We learn best when we learn in community. Do you have a question about teaching the Bible? Today, we are in Isaiah 61 and 62. We know what we are reading is true because Jesus actually read from the scroll of Isaiah in the New Testament. If Jesus reads from it, it must be true. So, can you believe all of Isaiah is prophetic and either has come true, or will?

Nearly everyone today assumes that Jesus could read and write. But is that historically plausible? There is only one story in the New Testament where Jesus is shown to be able to read (Luke 4) and he is never said to be able to write (except in the story of the Woman Caught in Adultery that was added by scribes only later John 7-8). In this episode we consider the literacy rates of antiquity (very low!), and discuss who could learn to read and then write, how they were educated, and whether it is likely that an impoverished dayworker from a poor family in a remote backwater of the empire was one of them.
Confused about the Old Testament? The Son of God sure has an interesting solution!
Consider this—Jesus, fully God and fully Man, walked this Earth, and while doing so, He read the Old Testament. He listened to it, studied it, repeated it, and applied it. In the third installment of our Covered in the Dust series, Pastor Jess addresses how Jesus, who has complete and perfect understanding of willingness, understood the God of the Old Testament.

Would You Let Jesus Read Your Soul? by Fr. Michael Denk
If reading Scripture was important to Jesus, then it should be important to us.
Dan introduces a new guest to the podcast, James Andrews, to consider the whole question of how we read the Old Testament in the light of Jesus. Do we even need to pay it any attention now that Jesus has come? They consider what it means for Jesus to fulfil the Old Testament and find that, when Jesus reads and applies the different parts of the Hebrew Bible, he shows us how to bring it to life in our lives as Christians today.
Strength to Strength welcomed Chuck Pike to explore Jesus' Bible with us.Have you ever wondered why Jesus and the apostles misquote Old Testament texts? Are these sloppy quotations, sketchy transmission over the millennia, or shoddy translation in modern times? Or perhaps New Testament authors were trying to revise the Old Testament text to better represent their goals? For example, Isaiah says,“The Spirit of the Lord God is upon Me,Because the Lord has anointed MeTo preach good tidings to the poor;He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted,To proclaim liberty to the captives,And the opening of the prison to those who are bound.- Isaiah 61:1 NKJVBut when Jesus quoted this in Luke, He inserted the phrase “and recovery of sight to the blind:"The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me,Because He has anointed MeTo preach the gospel to the poor;He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted,To proclaim liberty to the captivesAnd recovery of sight to the blind,To set at liberty those who are oppressed.- Luke 4:18 NKJVIf these discrepancies concern you, join Chuck as he illustrates Jesus' and the apostles' frequent use of a different Old Testament text than the one most English Bibles are translated from today. If you've heard confusing terms like “Masoretic” and “Septuagint” – that confusion is about to melt away.An interactive question-and-answer period follows.
In which the 3Ds debate the merits of hard versus soft science fiction -- and wonder which type each of the Gospel writers would be fan boys of. Along the way, we learn that whoever wrote Matthew really didn't understand the point of poetry; the need for Bryce Dallas Howard and Leah Thompson to direct more sci fi (a lot more, please!); Alan Tudyk is the perfect anti-star; and Dan is disgusted at the utter and complete lack of science in Star Wars. Dave and Drew are shockingly not surprised in the slightest.
This devotional reading can be found in Luke 24:1-12 & the title of the Spotify music you heard is called "Because He Lives" by Matt Maher. In our devotional we want to remind you how much Jesus loves you! He loves you so much that he died on the cross for you. We want you to know that Jesus' suffering, death and resurrection in the cross is because He loves you and he wants to be with you someday. If you are not saved yet, I pray that you will accept his Gift of Salvation.

Matthew 5:17-30 - Lindsey Goodhew
So many Christians don’t know what to do with the Old Testament or how to apply it. Sadly, this results in having a low view of the OT and thats unfortunate because Jesus loved the OT and because in it we see the very character of God. If Jesus is who he claims to be, then his opinion should be very influential in shaping our own. Jesus had a high view of Scripture that included all of the Old Testament. He loved and obeyed it. Like Jesus, followers of His are called to the same care and ethic.
