Pastor Ralph Casebolt brings a powerful word to help us be ready for the coming of Christ!
The greatest evidence that Christ is changing us is not what we know, but who we are becoming. Paul calls the church to put on the clothing of Christ: compassion for the hurting, kindness without harshness, humility that values others, gentleness that uses strength to serve, and patience that bears with imperfect people. These qualities are not optional extras—they are the visible marks of a community shaped by the gospel. As believers learn to forgive as they have been forgiven, allow Christ's peace to settle disputes, and let God's Word make itself at home in every area of life, the church becomes a powerful witness to the world. We become a storefront of the kingdom, displaying the beauty, goodness, and grace of Jesus to everyone who walks through our doors.

Forgive us for all we have taken for granted. With pride, we have insisted on forging our own path. With fear, we have lacked faith to follow where you lead. Guiding Question How can we cultivate true humility in our lives to experience God's peace, grace, and blessing, especially when faced with the pressures of having things “our way”? Summary This sermon explores the struggle of pride and self-will, highlighting how trying to have life “our way” leads to weariness, conflict, and emptiness. It presents the biblical principle of humility as a solution, focusing on Peter's teaching in 1 Peter 5:5-7. The message unfolds the three-fold process for developing humility: bowing under God's mighty hand, resting by casting our anxieties on Him, and expecting God's blessing at the proper time. Through this process, believers learn to surrender control, trust God's timing, and live in harmony with others and the Holy Spirit, leading to spiritual growth and unity. Outline: The Problem of Pride and Self-Will The weariness of insisting on “my way” How pride causes tension in personal and church relationships The danger of a competitive, self-focused mindset Peter's Call to Humility (1 Peter 5:5-7) Clothe yourself with humility of mind Humility as cooperating with God's will, not pushing our own The Three-Fold Process of Humility Bow: Submit your will to God's plan and purpose Rest: Cast all anxieties and worries on God because He cares Expect: Trust in God's perfect timing for blessing and exaltation Living the Process The struggle with “what if” fears after deciding to humble ourselves God's care and desire for us to respond rightly The importance of patience and faith in God's “proper time” Illustration of the man who found someone to worry for him (God) Encouragement and Invitation God's promise to exalt those who humble themselves A call to surrender and experience true rest Prayer for unity and love within the church Key Takeaways Pride and insisting on having things “our way” leads to conflict, weariness, and spiritual emptiness. True humility involves a deliberate process: bowing our will to God, resting in His care by casting anxieties on Him, and expecting blessing at His appointed time. God cares deeply about our struggles and wants us to respond rightly, even when life is difficult. Trusting God's timing requires faith and patience; blessings and changes may take time to appear. Humility fosters harmony in personal relationships and within the church, reflecting Christ's character. Casting our worries on God frees us from burdens and empowers us to live peaceably and faithfully. Scriptural References 1 Peter 5:5-7 — The core passage teaching humility: bowing under God's mighty hand, casting anxieties on Him, and trusting His care. James 4:6 — “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” (Implied in the sermon's theme) Philippians 2:3-4 — Valuing others above ourselves, putting others' needs before our own (supporting the humility and unity message) Matthew 11:28-30 — Jesus invites the weary to find rest in Him, echoing the rest theme. Proverbs 3:5-6 — Trust in the Lord and submit to His way, supporting the bowing process. Recorded 11/23/80

This includes active participation, such as serving in roles like ushering, care giving, or maintenance, 1 Corinthians 12:12-27 stresses interdependence: "If one member suffers, all suffer together; if one member is honored, all rejoice together." Hebrews 10:24-25 instructs, "Let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another." Responsibility to Follow Church Elders Members are instructed to respect, obey, and submit to elders as spiritual overseers appointed by God for guidance and protection. Hebrews 13:17 commands, "Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they are keeping watch over your souls, as those who will have to give an account. Let them do this with joy and not with groaning, for that would be of no advantage to you." 1 Thessalonians 5:12-13 adds, "We ask you, brothers, to respect those who labor among you and are over you in the Lord and admonish you, and to esteem them very highly in love because of their work." 1 Peter 5:5 urges, "Likewise, you who are younger, be subject to the elders. Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another." Responsibilities to One Another Believers are commanded to support, forgive, and build each other up, fostering a community of accountability and love. Galatians 6:2 states, "Bear one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ." Ephesians 4:32 adds, "Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you." Philippians 2:3-4 urges humility: "Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others." Responsibilities to the Community Around Them Church members are ambassadors, called to serve and evangelize beyond church walls. James 1:27 defines pure religion as "to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world." Matthew 5:13-16 calls believers "the salt of the earth" and "the light of the world," urging good works that glorify God. The Great Commission in Matthew 28:19-20 commands: "Go therefore and make disciples of all nations."

SHOW NOTES In Podcast Episode 347, “Power, Pride, and the Plummet,” Kim discusses the humiliating fall of the puffed-up King Uzziah of the Southern Kingdom. As long as he feared the Lord and sought guidance from the Lord, he had a successful life, and the kingdom of Judah thrived. Yet, at some point, his eyes left the Lord and his purposes, and began to consider himself above respect for God and His law. May each of us learn from Uzziah's tragic end. Our focal passage for this episode is 2 Chronicles 26:16-23, with 16 as the focal verse: “But when he had become powerful, he also became proud, which led to his downfall. He sinned against the Lord his God by entering the sanctuary of the Lord's Temple and personally burning incense on the incense altar.” WEEKLY ENGAGEMENT FEATURE: Humbly pray the prayer provided below and fully submit to the Spirit's leading. PRAYER AGAINST PRIDE Heavenly Father, You are the Lord Almighty, the One who resists the proud but gives grace to the humble (James 4:6). We come before You today, confessing that pride has crept into our hearts like a silent thief, stealing our dependence on You. Forgive us, Lord, when we have thought too highly of ourselves, when we have sought our own glory instead of Yours. Like King Uzziah, we have sometimes trusted in our success, our strength, our wisdom— and forgotten that “Pride goes before destruction, and haughtiness before a fall” (Proverbs 16:18). Break our hearts where pride has taken root. “Create in me a clean heart, O God. Renew a loyal spirit within me” (Psalm 51:10). Search us and reveal any arrogance, self-reliance, or desire to be seen by others. Help us to “humble ourselves under Your mighty power” (1 Peter 5:6), knowing that You alone are worthy of praise. Teach us to walk in the fear of the Lord, for “true humility and fear of the Lord lead to riches, honor, and long life” (Proverbs 22:4). Clothe us with humility, as You clothed Your Son, Jesus, who “humbled himself in obedience to God and died a criminal's death on a cross” (Philippians 2:8). May we never stand on the precipice of pride, but instead “boast only about the Lord” (1 Corinthians 1:31), and “take delight in honoring each other” (Romans 12:10). Guard our hearts, our words, and our actions. Let “everything we do… bring glory to God” (1 Corinthians 10:31), and keep us low at the foot of the cross, where true greatness is found in serving, not in being served. In the name of Jesus Christ, our humble King, we pray. Amen. (Grok, Oct. 31, 2025) Additional Resources and Scriptures: 8 Come close to God, and God will come close to you. Wash your hands, you sinners; purify your hearts, for your loyalty is divided between God and the world. 9 Let there be tears for what you have done. Let there be sorrow and deep grief. Let there be sadness instead of laughter, and gloom instead of joy. 10 Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up in honor. (James 4:8-10) 16 There are six things the Lord hates—no, seven things he detests: 17 haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that kill the innocent, 18 a heart that plots evil, feet that race to do wrong, 19 a false witness who pours out lies, a person who sows discord in a family. (Proverbs 6:16-19) 18 Pride goes before destruction, and haughtiness before a fall. (Proverbs 16:18) 2 Pride leads to disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom. Having died to their old lives and been raised with Christ, they are called to cast off sinful behaviors like immorality, anger, and slander. Instead, they should clothe themselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. Forgiveness is key, just as Jesus forgave them. Above all virtues, love binds everything together in perfect unity. Paul emphasizes letting Christ's peace rule in their hearts and encourages believers to be thankful. The message of Christ should dwell richly among them, expressed through teaching, wisdom, and songs of praise. In all they do, they are to act in the name of the Lord Jesus. Lastly, Paul addresses family dynamics, encouraging wives, husbands, and children to embody Christ's presence within the home. If we are raised in Christ, we must flee old habits that no longer define us in Him, like sexual sin or bitterness toward others. In our daily lives, we should actively choose purity of heart, compassion, and forgiveness, even when it is hard. When tensions rise at home, work, or with friends, we must remember to let Christ's peace guide our responses. Love must be the foundation of everything we do, being featured in our family. In every situation, whether speaking, working, or serving, we are called to do it all in Jesus' name with thankfulness. True transformation is about growing into the image of Christ—reflecting His character and honoring Him in every relationship, every decision, and every moment. Loving Father, thank You for raising us to new life in Christ. Help us to set our hearts on things above and to let go of anything that pulls us away from You. Clothe us with character traits that emulate Christ. Empower us to forgive as You have forgiven us, and let Your peace rule in our hearts. May love guide all we do, and may the message of Christ dwell richly within us, especially in our marriage and homes. Whatever we say or do today, let it be in the name of Jesus, giving thanks to You always. Thought Questions: What helps you keep seeking things above and set your mind on heavenly things? How is this more than morning prayer and bible study? In what way is love the perfect bond of unity? What helps you show patience, compassion, and forgiveness for those who wrong you? “It is the Lord Christ whom you serve.” Why is this mindset vital in the home, with marriages and relationships between parents and children?

Reach Out: Please include your email and I will get back to you. Thanks!Ephesians 6Relationships continue to be featured in this letter. Children must obey and honor their parents, receiving God's blessing if they do. Parents are called to raise their children with discipline and instruction in the Lord. Servants and masters are reminded to treat each other with respect, knowing that God is the ultimate Master. Christians must wear the full armor of God to stand against the devil's schemes. This includes the belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, the shoes of peace, the shield of faith, the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is God's Word. Paul emphasizes the power of prayer, encouraging constant communication with God. He concludes with a call to boldness in sharing the gospel, reminding believers to stand firm and trust in God's strength. We are called to obey God, honoring those in authority, and treating others with respect and integrity. In our daily lives, we must recognize that we are in a spiritual battle and cannot rely on our own strength. We need to put on the full armor of God daily, standing firm in truth, righteousness, peace, faith, and salvation. God's Word is our weapon, and prayer should be our constant connection to Him. When challenges arise, we must remember that our strength comes from God, not ourselves. By staying rooted in Him, we can resist temptation and boldly share the gospel with those around us. Walking in His power enables us to live faithfully and confidently in every aspect of our lives. Glorious God, strengthen us to stand firm in Your power and to demonstrate Your will in our family and all relationships. Clothe us in Your armor so we may resist the enemy's attacks. Fill us with truth, righteousness, and peace, and increase our faith to extinguish every doubt and temptation. Protect our minds with the assurance of salvation and equip us with Your Word to fight spiritual battles. Teach us to pray constantly, always seeking Your guidance daily. Help us to be bold in sharing the gospel and to walk in obedience and integrity. Prepare us to be used by You. Thought Questions: - This chapter features authority constructs: parent/child and master/slave. Why is it vital to be Christ-like on both sides of these relationships? - How do you put on the full armor of God? What are your habits? More importantly, how does Christ's strength help you when you do this? - “Pray at all times in the Spirit” (v18). What does it mean to pray in connection with the Holy Spirit, and how does He help you in your prayers?
