This is our unabridged interview with Philip Yancey. What do we do with the painful parts of our life story? Anybody familiar with Philip Yancey's work knows that it has cost him more than time to be a bestselling author and journalist. It has cost him a lifetime of pain, loss, and deep spiritual struggle. Philip intentionally waited until recently to write down his story to protect some of the people in it, but now in his seventies, he's released “Where the Light Fell,” his memoir that shares all the messy details about growing and beyond - losing his father, childhood poverty, parental abuse, ruinous fundamentalist Christianity, militant atheism, a nearly fatal car accident, and more. In this episode he shares how he managed to come to new understanding in the face of suffering. “A writer really only has one gift,” says Philip Yancey, “and that's the gift of his or her own life.” Show Notes Similar episodes: William Paul Young: Author of The Shack Amy Grant: Fame, Vulnerability, and Staying Grounded Kelly Corrigan: How Vulnerability Leads to Connection Christian Wiman: The Opposite of Faith is Certainty Resources mentioned this episode: Where the Light Fell by Philip Yancey My Name is Asher Lev by Chaim Potok Soul Survivor by Philip Yancey PDF of Lee's Interview Notes Transcript for Abridged Episode JOIN NSE+ Today! When you interview people and you do surveys the vast majority say the times I grew most, especially grew most in my faith, those were hard times, difficult times. And if we hang in there with trust and faith, independence and help of others around us later, we can often look back on those, "Oh, that was a time of redeemed pain. I wouldn't wish it on anybody. I wouldn't wish it on myself." But those things that were most difficult for me, become pillars of faith for most people. So, I would say there's some people on radio and television who will promise you that bad things won't happen to you and they're just wrong. You know, bad things do happen. But I call God the great recycler. He takes things that we wish didn't happen and turns them into things that are useful for us.---Listen to best-selling author Philip Yancey being interviewed by seasoned journalist Lorna Dueck as they discuss Philip's journey through life and faith. Philip experienced many troubles during his childhood which led him to probe the most basic questions and deepest mysteries of the Christian faith. Philip has been guiding millions of readers with his books such as, "Disappointment with God", and, "Where Is God When It Hurts?"  His books have garnered 13 Gold Medallion Awards from Christian publishers and booksellers. Philip currently has more than 17 million books in print, published in over 50 languages worldwide. For Philip Yancey, reading offered a window to a different world. So, he devoured books that opened his mind, challenged his upbringing and went against what he had been taught. In doing so, a sense of betrayal began to engulf him. In his words, “I felt I had been lied to. I realized that God had been misrepresented to me. Then cautiously, warily, I returned, circling around the faith to see if it might be true.” Those discoveries about God and more are contained in Philips recent memoir, "Where the Light Fell", where he takes us on a journey from strict fundamentalism to a search for grace and meaning.

Even though it may not feel like it, grief can be a source of great hope. The way that we react against what is wrong comes from a deep desire for things to be made right. Our loss may actually lead to healing and restoration. The Bible assures us that better days are coming when God Himself will wipe every tear from our eyes. “There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain,” it says in Revelation, “for the old order of things has passed away.” (Revelation 21:3-4) Our guests this week have walked through deep and unexpected grief and what even seemed like unfair losses. Best-selling Christian author Philip Yancey uncovered a shocking secret about his father's death while he was still in college, one that illuminated the sometimes overbearing religious convictions of his mother. Yancey shares how he dove into his family's origins and how he ultimately found healing from what he calls “toxic faith.” After nearly thirty years of marriage, author Mike Nappa lost his dear wife, Amy, to cancer. Mike turned to scripture to help him get through the day and to cope with processing his grief—and even today, he sees how grief and joy can coexist.   Links, Products, and Resources Mentioned: Jesus Calling Podcast Jesus Calling Jesus Always Jesus Listens Past interview: Eddie Montgomery Upcoming interview: Leslie Schilling Samaritan's Purse: https://sampur.se/44HesSt  Revelation 21:3-4 NIV   Philip Yancey Christianity Today magazine  The Jesus I Never Knew What's So Amazing About Grace? And then one day you wake up and wonder, Is this just a learned behavior pattern that I have, or is it genuine? Am I really connecting to the God of the universe?“ - Philip Yancey “I started looking for people who were made larger by their faith.“ - Philip Yancey “Don't just give up on God because of the way God may have been presented to you. It's worth that quest to try to find who God really is and to find that God loves you. And God indeed does imagine a role for you on this earth that no one else has. That's why we were created. We were created in God's image to reflect something of God back to others.” - Philip Yancey “There's nothing that you can do to get God to love you more. No amount of spiritual calisthenics, no amount of trying to be more spiritual than everybody else—there's nothing you can do for God to love you less.” - Philip Yancey “God wants to remake us in a way that's good for us. God wants to restore us. God wants to give us a calling, a reason for being, a reason to live on this planet, and grace is the attitude that God has toward us all the time.” - Philip Yancey “I understand that God is really who He said He was, just like I thought He was before, in the moments of great joy and in the moments of great sorrow. And He is always near in the moments of great joy, and when it gets hard, He doesn't step back and run away. He'll just stand there and stay with you.” - Mike Nappa  “The grief that we have is not something to be thrown aside any more than love would be thrown aside. The grief that we have is something to visit and understand and take value and take benefit from.” - Mike Nappa “I don't have to be consumed by grief. It can just be part of who I am as I also experience joy and happiness.” - Mike Nappa ________________________ Enjoy watching these additional videos from Jesus Calling YouTube channel! Témou jeho kníh je často utrpenie a milosť a práve tie vychádzajú z jeho prežívania silného rodinného aj náboženského tlaku. Jednou z otázok, ktorým sa venuje, je, ako prežívanie utrpenia ovplyvňuje náš vzťah s Bohom a ako v ňom môžeme nachádzať zmysel. Ak vás kniha zaujala, môžete si ju kúpiť aj tu. “Suffering and grace are the themes that have emerged - and they have defined the rest of my life.” - Philip YanceyOn this edition, Michael welcomes our good friend, Philip Yancey, to discuss his latest book, his memoir,  “Where the Light Fell.” At its heart, this is a book about the possibility of healing and the hope that nothing in a person's life need go to waste. A fascinating read - we trust the conversation will be equally as stimulating. No author in contemporary Christian literature is more well-known for their writing on grace and suffering than Philip. He has authored over 25 books in which he has wrestled with God, the Church, and fellow believers. After surviving a church background of what he now calls “toxic faith,” he ultimately came to know a God of grace and beauty. REPRISE Philip Yancey's courageous and penetrating new book, his memoir - Where the Light Fell - will be released on October 5. There's a big audience for Philip's story. There are over 100 million claim to have experienced Christian fundamentalism and 25 million more identify as "exvangelicals." Brother Marshall, a musical prodigy, had perfect pitch. Philip's  father contracted polio and died when Philip was only 18 months old. Ken notes that Philip's experience in segregationalist fundamentalism is extreme. Paul Van Gorder, Bob Jones, Jr., Lester Maddox all would come to Philip's church. The Prophecy Conferences were an annual event, providing much to fear. Tony Evans came to the church, and was turned away.  Philip's mother, a well known Bible teacher, struggled to make ends meet but never quite recovered from her husbands passing. The three Yancey's lived in a mobile home, located in an Atlanta area "trailer park." The Lost Cause narrative permeated church life, but high school opened new perspectives for Philip.  He shares bitter-sweet memories of church life. Philip appeared as the Southern preacher Elijah in a high school performance of Inherit the Wind. In Bible College, Philip had a reputation as an intellectual rebel, reading Bertrand Russell and Harvey Cox. Then he met his match, Janet. The parable of the Good Samaritan changed everything. He would later write. What's So Amazing about Grace. George Beverly Shea's song touches Philip.  (First aired September 2021)SHOW NOTES | BECOME A PATRON of the BWM PodcastSupport the show (http://thebeachedwhitemale.com)

This week, we're re-airing one of our most popular episodes to date - Jennifer's interview with Philip Yancey!Philip Yancey's fire-and-brimstone fundamentalist upbringing temporarily drove him from the church. In this environment, where he learned to play the part, his identity became confused. By the time he reached college, his pain turned to anger and religious mockery, which only led to further rejection. Others viewed him as the rebel, the outcast, the trouble-maker. But God penetrated the walls he had built around himself, helped him untangle all the falsehoods he'd learned from truth, and set him on a road of healing and freedom. In this episode, Yancey shares his journey, his heart for those who have been deeply hurt in the name of religion, as well as some insights as to how those who haven't experienced this much trauma can be instruments of healing for those who have. Do you have anyone you can be completely honest with regarding your struggles, questions and doubts?5. What are some ways we might inadvertently shut those with questions or doubts down?6. If you are currently in a faith group, consider the climate. How does (or might) your group members respond if another member expresses questions or doubt?7. In what ways are you currently helping to create safe environments where people can be vulnerable and authentic?8. If you have been hurt by the church, what are your thoughts to Yancey's statement regarding not allowing broken people to stand between you and God?9. Why do we expect the Christian life to be easy when the Bible clearly says it will be a struggle? Starting with the wrong expectation, says John Mark Comer, makes us spiritually neurotic and causes more suffering than necessary. He talks with Skye about his new book, “Live No Lies,” why spiritual warfare isn't what you've been taught, why information alone doesn't change us, and what it means to really be people committed to the truth. Also this week, artificial intelligence is now offering very questionable ethical advice. Phil wonders what it means for self-driving cars. Two seminaries are suing the government over the Covid vaccine mandate, but is it really a question of religious liberty? New data says white evangelicals are those most likely to use violence to defend America, and those most likely to reject America's founding ideal of pluralism. Does anyone else see a contradiction? Hey Friends! What a show this is. I am so excited to have the amazing Philip Yancey with us to talk about his personal journey with God. This is such an important conversation, and I hope you'll walk away from it feeling encouraged and inspired.  Philip and I take a deep dive on his experiences growing up in an Independent Baptist Church, the difficulties with his mother, and how we can make sure we are living a life of grace. We also discuss his new memoir, Where the Light Fell.  As you may know Philip is a Christian author who writes about questions and topics of faith that matter to both believers and doubters alike.  Listen in to learn more about:  How growing up in a rigid household gave Philip the wrong picture of God.  The importance of nuance in our prayers to God. It is not a voting competition where we need to get a number of people on our side to persuade God to do something.  His journey of making peace through the years with seeing God as a loving parent.  How the experience with the Church and your experience with God are two very different things.   Favorite quotes: 1. Grace means there's nothing you can do to make God love you more. 2. Grace-healed eyes means seeing the world not through the performance, merit, ranking eyes that we tend to do around us but rather through God's eyes. 3. I've learned early on what you believe is important. You got to get it right. Some people who claim to speak for God happen to be wrong and we shouldn't take it at face value when they say they are speaking for God.    4. God wants us like little children to climb into a parents lap and say this is what I want.  5. Don't make your decision about relating to God based on your experience in the church.   Great things we discussed:  1. Philip Yancey2. Where the Light Fell: A Memoir 3. Reckless Love 4.  The Good Doctor 5. Paul: A Biography 6. Nespresso Vertuo Coffee and Espresso Maker by De'Longhi, Piano Black  7. Dune  8. Pieces  9. Standing Strong Hope you loved this episode! In this episode, Yancey speaks of his childhood faith and the fear that shook it, which eventually led him to discover the Jesus he never knew. He and Moore talk about the toxic ideas that arise when churches paint a false picture of who God is. Finally, they discuss the eye-opening, true nature of God and how, ultimately, his love should cast out fear. “The Russell Moore Show” is a production of Christianity Today Chief Creative Officer: Erik Petrik Executive Producer and Host: Russell Moore Director of Podcasts: Mike Cosper Production Assistance: CoreMedia Coordinator: Beth Grabenkort Producer and Audio Mixing: Kevin Duthu Administrators: Christine Kolb and Pam Vodenova Theme Song: “Dusty Delta Day” by Lennon Hutton Learn more about your ad choices. If you've participated in a community of faith before, you've probably quickly realized what most people eventually discover- it's filled with a bunch of imperfect people. Whether you go to a megachurch or a local community church, it's not uncommon for us to have experiences that get us more than a little off-kilter and disoriented about our faith. Sometimes, we can even get the wires all crossed and mistake who God is with what people speaking in His name do. The question is, how do we think through our faith and our relationship to the church well? How can we integrate our experiences and rediscover a faith in God that's marked by love and grace? I doubt there's anyone who can speak more wisely about that than Philip Yancey. Philip Yancey has authored over 25 books, in which he has wrestled with God, with the Church, and with fellow believers. After surviving a church background of what he now calls “toxic faith,” he ultimately came to know a God of grace and beauty. With a journalistic, story-telling style, he invites readers to accompany him as he probes the deepest mysteries of the Christian faith, and challenges readers to live as followers of Jesus. Many have done so. His books have sold more than 15 million copies in English, and have been translated into 40 languages worldwide. Philip's bestselling titles include What's So Amazing About Grace? and The Jesus I Never Knew. His most recent book is a memoir, Where the Light Fell, released by Convergent Books on October 5th. Not until college days do I discover the shocking secret of my father's death. With a journalist's background, Philip Yancey is widely admired for taking on the more difficult and confusing aspects of faith. Now, in Where the Light Fell, he shares, for the first time, the painful details of his own origins - taking us on an evocative journey from the backwoods and Bible-belt pockets of the South to the bustling streets of Philadelphia: from trailer parks to church parking lots, from dark secrets and family oddballs to fire-and-brimstone preachers and interminable church services. Raised by their impoverished single mother, Philip and his brother, Marshall, struggle to comprehend her speeches about their dead father, an Old Testament Bible story, and sons sacrificed for a divine cause. This coming-of-age story is a slice of life, both intensely personal and broadly resonant, set against a turbulent time in post-WWII American history shaped by the racism and paranoia of fundamentalist Christianity and reshaped by the mounting pressures of the civil rights movement and '60s-era forces of social change. An unforgettable listen, it is at once hugely funny, deeply disturbing and achingly poignant. A testament to the power of the human spirit, Where the Light Fell illuminates Yancey's ability to bring comfort to those bruised by the church, and hope to those who can't imagine ever finding a healthy faith.

On today's episode, Alan talks with author and grace-obsessed communicator Philip Yancey about the challenges of these times and why we don't reflect the grace of our Savior. About Phillip I started my career working as an Editor and then Publisher for Campus Life magazine. During those ten years I learned journalistic skills (there's no tougher audience than teenagers), but every year it seemed I wrote fewer and fewer words. In 1980 my wife and I moved to downtown Chicago where I began a career as a freelance writer. (She has worked as a social worker and hospice chaplain--which gives me plenty of material to write about!) We lived there until 1992, when we moved to the foothills of Colorado. I've written over 30 books, most of them still in print, thankfully. Three of them I coauthored with Dr. Paul Brand, who influenced me more than any single person. A recent book, "Fearfully and Wonderfully: The Marvel of Bearing God's Image" is a revised compilation of that content. My other favorites include "Soul Survivor" and "Reaching for the Invisible God" because both of them forced me to dig deep and get personal. I have two new books for release in 2021. “A Companion in Crisis” offers a paraphrase of John Donne's ‘Devotions' with commentary and application to our current suffering. My long-awaited memoir, “Where the Light Fell” will give readers a backstory of sorts, revealing the secrets of my turbulent childhood and teen years, and its impact on my written work. I'm a pilgrim, still 'in recovery' from a bad church upbringing, searching for the possibility of a faith rooted in grace instead of fear. I feel overwhelming gratitude that I can make a living writing about the questions that interest me. Philip Yancey's fire-and-brimstone fundamentalist upbringing temporarily drove him from the church. In this episode, Yancey shares his journey, his heart for those who have been deeply hurt in the name of religion, as well as some insights as to how those who haven't experienced this such trauma can be instruments of healing for those who have. Now, he's released a memoir that takes us back to his fundamentalist upbringing and the pain, trauma and resiliency of his childhood. Philip joins FT podcast host Karen Stiller to discuss Where the Light Fell, what it takes to encourage someone grappling with faith; and what kept him in the Church despite an incredibly painful start.
